Imac booting into terminal window

Ever since updating to Mountain Lion my imac boots up showing the boot up script, sometimes it stops and I have to type exit or boot to get it going...I've spoken to Apple 'support' 6 times now and including a re-install they have talked me through a miriad of processes...none of them have worked.

Have you done this?
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on
the Erase tab in the DU main window.
  3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero
Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
  4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac G5 booting into Terminal Window

At start up the fans come on and I get the opening white Apple screen then everything goes black. I am not sure but it would appear that my IMac G5 is booting into Terminal. I get a whole load of Unix code then it changes to a plain blue screen with the mouse able to drive the cursor but nothing else.
Can anyone suggest how to get out of Terminal into a normal GUI Mac screen.
I cannot boot from the original CD/DVD nor can I start up in safe mode.

With no responses I worked at it myself. Having zapped the PRAM many times it suddenly cleared

  • IMac boots into Terminal

Grandkids have my G4 iMac with OS X 10.4.11 installed and has only 256 MB of memory.
While a granddaughter was reading a Facebook listing the screen went black. Now when powered up the monitor remains black and is actually in the Terminal mode. Typing cal brings up April's calendar.
I re-booted inserted the Tiger CD and held down the C key. After booting up on the CD and getting to the install screen I tried several things. First, I chose the Start Up Drive and selected the OS X 10.4.11 drive---this resulted in the black screen in the Terminal Mode again. After re-booting on the CD again I selected the Disk Utility and repaired permissions---same result-the black screen in Terminal. Another CD re-boot and attempted Disk Verify on Disk Utility---resulted in disk error---same result when Disk Repair selected.
Basic questions: 1) Would re-installing Tiger be the best approach to resolve the issue? 2) Is there another procedure I am missing which also solves the problem? 3) Would exiting the Terminal mode resolve the problem?

The file's authoring info, album info, etc, may be lost, unless you can rescue the entire Music folder. If that info is in the actual physical file name, it is not lost. The music is still there regardless, unless something really bad happened to the hard drive.
It won't mess up the iPod, just make sure the machine that syncs to the iPod has the entire desired library. You can always transfer music between computers, and between computer and iPod, but not from iPod to computer.
Of course this is all subject to the license restrictions of the music itself.

Help when i boot into the windows 7 instal disk it freezes at windows loading files.

    1. Have you tried both Alt keys - maybe your Alt key is dead.
    2. Do you have wireless keyboard? Have you tried to change batteries? USB Keyboard?
    3. If your Win is installed correctly then you have also installed all windows support software.
There should be Startup manager like on the Mac (next to the clock little bootcamp app or in control pannel) to restart your Mac into the Mac partition.

  • Can't boot into my windows pro 64 bit dvd to do clean install

I am trying to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit (Brazilian Portuguese) I keep getting a request to select  a cd-rom type 1 or 2. Neither works.
I have researched this here and on Google. All I find are references to Mac installs and changing the bios settings.
My drives are not set to AHCI - I have boot from CD/DVD first in the boot order. I did the original install of windows 7 64 bit to this same equipment and configuration with this same official windows disk without any problems. I recently began having
problems with the system after almost two years of use - efforts to repair were not only unsuccessful they left the system almost unusable. I am running the OS on a separate partition from my data.
I was planning on booting to the Windows disk and wiping the C: partiton and reinstalling but I am being prevented by a message saying that i need to select a cd-rom boot type 1 or 2. Neither works - it just goes on to boot to the present damaged OS on my
computer. I have tried typing "3" at the message - also didn't work. While I have a backup of my D: drive data I would rather not lose it and have to try to recover that as well.
I would appreciate any help - I find it really strange that the same disk I used to install the system won't work now.

This may or may not be a BIOS related issue, I am only a user - but the Windows installation disk/system is certainly a MAJOR player in this problem. I booted to UBCD and deleted the c: drive to get rid of the old windows install (leaving the 100mb"system"
partition) and tried the boot again. Same problem with the Win 7 64 bit DVD. Except that when I entered "1" and "enter" it a "windows repair" window opened that appeared to be triggered from the 100mb "system" partition.
I shut down and, out of curiosity, I inserted the The Win 7 32 bit DVD and it booted. I cancelled the install and booted the UBCD and deleted the 100mb "system" partition and resized the c: partition and booted the 64 bit install disk again. This
time, when the boot asked for "1 or 2", I entered "1" and it booted and began the install. On the first reset it asked for "1 or 2", I entered "1" and it asked to "enter" if I wanted to boot from the cd/dvd
drive. I believe that I used "esc" and it booted from the hard drive and completed the install. Only the Windows install DVD creates this problem other bootable disks I have don't do this.
Since my original install was from the same disk to a new Hard Drive I didn't have any problem installing. My problems began with the need to reinstall, which is a VERY common problem with Windows. Once I found the workaround, which did not involve the BIOS
but "fooling" the Windows install/system on my official retail copy of Windows, I was able to reinstall.
Since I am using a very common, high end, if old, Intel board and processor I can't believe that others don't encounter these problems and I think that it begs the question to say that the problem is Intel related and to go to them for help.
Anyway, I do appreciate your taking the time to review my problem and trying to help. I have been as detailed as I could above in the hope that this will help any others who are encountering this problem. I would add that I am using Brazilian Portuguese
install disk and I suppose that this could be a solution only  for similar disks. From what I have seen on this forum and the internet, it seems to be more generalized.
    Thank-you again

  • After Finder Crashes, iMac boots into Darwin

    Hello,
I'm not sure if this is exactly the correct forum, but I really need help. Today I was working on my iMac G5 when I tried to open a Word document on my Desktop (by double clicking on the document with Word already open). Suddenly, my Desktop icons go away and Finder is no longer working. So, I decide to restart my computer. Ever since then my computer automatically boots up into Darwin and asks me for my login and password when I turn it on. Where is my GUI?! Every time I restart it's the same thing. If I enter the wrong username/password it goes gray, has a spinning circle, and then spits me back into the Darwin login screen.
Another weird bit of info in all of this is that after awhile it will display the following line:
    Nov 3 13:42:48 my-name-imac-g5 virusScan[188]: Could not create VirexInterface
So that has me worried also. Does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks,
    corp

I'd boot to your Tiger installer disk. Verify the hard drive (and repair if necessary) with Disk Utility. If all is okay do an archive and install, selecting to preserve users and settings.
Boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway.
Next, boot from your drive in [Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393] and repair permissions. You can repair permissions while booted from the installer disc but this uses the permissions configuration on the installer disc which may be out of date if you have run any updates on your computer. Booting your computer to Safe Mode restricts the number of things running on your computer while permissions are being run and does a bit of spring cleaning at the same time.

From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • IMac boots into white screen

I have a 2005 20" iMac that's started to just show a white screen on start up.  A folder with a question mark on it pops up after a while (10-20 minutes).  I tried putting in the Snow Leopard install disc (It was on 10.6.8) and pressing c on startup.  It didn't do anything for a minute so I gave it awhile and when I came back it went into a kernel panic.  I suspect the hard drive inside failed.  Is this most likely the cause?  If so, will any 2.5 inch drive work in its place?

    Did you do this:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    You can also try:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the icon for the Snow Leopard DVD.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
If you cannot get it to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and have no other OS installer DVD that can boot the computer, then you can boot from a bootable system on an external drive.
A scenario such as you described could just mean there are damaged OS files. At this point you don't have enough information to determine that the HDD has failed. iMacs use 3.5" drives, not 2.5" notebook drives. They are not interchangeable.

  • Reinstall on MDD boots into Terminal

I recently bought another MDD G4, the same model as the one I've owned for years . The previous owner didn't have the set of discs that came with it, and had installed Tiger on one of two internal HDs. However, I have a set that came with my computer.
As I would like to use the dual-boot capability to include OS 9, for which I have a lot of favorite programs, games, etc. I cloned the boot drive to the second drive using SuperDuper, and then used my install disc from my set to install OS 10.2.1.
On start up, I got a user log-in screen, and on logging in, I found myself in Terminal (Welcome to Darwin) which I know little about. How do I exit this (is there a command procedure?) to get to the more familiar interface? Also, I then want to install OS 9. I'm not sure if the discs in the set will do this, but I also have an OS 9.O disc and a 9.2.2 upgrade disc. And I have an OS X updater disc to 10.2.8. From there, I assume I can install my Panther disc.
But again, having OS 9.2.2 capability is what's important. And of course, how to get out of Terminal. It's all very interesting, something about Bash, and Shells, but for another day, thank you.
    Keith

Yes, you really have to come here to get help on "old" models. I went to my local Apple store with a question about a G3 and the kid (I say the term advisedly) had almost no idea to what I was referring. I suspect my G3 was new when he was 10 years old.
I really don't know how specific the discs are. Maybe somebody else can answer that one. I don't think they go down to serial number but there may be some sub-versions in the models that you can't really detect easily. I have two cars the same year and model, but when I work on them I notice small differences such as the screws that hold on a part on one are not the same as the screws on the other. Maybe something like that except in the hardware or software.
Yes, OS9 had to be updated 9.0.4 _> 9.1 >9.2.1 -> 9.2.2 In OSX major versions (e.g., 10.1, 10.2, etc.) are basically new installs of operating system and you can jump. For example, if you have a computer running Panther that is capable of running Leopard you don't need to install Tiger, but you do have to pay for each new major version. Within a version you can (and should) use the "combo" (ugh, I always say "combination") updaters. So if you have a fresh install of Tiger and want to update it to 10.4.11 you can do it in one step with the combo updater.
You know, when I was doing more OS9 back in my G3 days I don't recall having to boot from a CD to do a fresh install of OS9. Now maybe I had some special version (this was at a large place with a site license and nobody had CDs), but I am wondering if you can get your lame version of 9.2.2 on your new computer you could maybe run your installer to get 9.0 onto the MDD. Do not boot to the new version immediately (which will not boot your computer anyway), but run all the updaters to take it to 9.2.2, then try booting from it. I'm not positive it will work but it's worth a try. If it gives you a good version of 9.2.2 you can then trash the old copy.
The drivers issue is a whole separate thing, but I've already gone through that.

  • Is it possible to boot to a Windows 7 install DVD from an external USB drive on current iMacs?

On the iMac I'm currently using, a mid-2007 24-inch, it's impossible to boot into a Windows install DVD from an external drive: I can hold down option on boot, and all my hard drives come up, but if the Windows disc is in my external DVD drive, it won't show up. I'll soon be upgrading to a late 2012 iMac, and I'd like to be able to install Windows 7 for a boot camp partition. Since that iMac has no built in drive, I'd like to know if using an external DVD drive will work on that model. I'd like to do that, seems easier than messing around with disk images. But we'll see...

You can use an external optical drive to install Windows without any problem with a Late 2012 iMac.
The reason that you couldn't install Windows from an external optical drive on the 2007 iMac is that it has got an internal SuperDrive, so Apple only allows you to use it to install Windows on your iMac

  • Imac boots up into user account

At start up my imac boots into my wifes account evem though it has a password How can i get it to boot up into the users screen

You have to disable automatic login. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options, and choose "Off" next to "Automatic login". After doing this, you will have to choose which user you want to log in with every time you start up your Mac.
You may have to press the padlock at the bottom left corner of the window first

  • How to make my iMac boot directly to Mac, instead of trying to boot to Windows?

I tried to install Windows 7 with BootCamp yesterday but something didn't work well and I canceled. I deleted the (already made) partition and I thought that everything is fine. I got my missing GBs back but today as I turned on my iMac i was expecting to see it boot into Mac, instead it said "Trying to boot from disk - no disk ...(something..)" Then I restarted the iMac, held the "alt" key and 2 things showed up. One was Mac OS X Mountain Lion and the other was "Recovery 10.8..."
How can I make my Mac boot into the Mac OS X instead of trying to boot into the Windows that I thought i deleted?

In System Preferences>Startup Disk, what is available and what is selected?

  • Black screen when trying to boot into Windows 7

    Hello everyone.
Today we've encountered an issue with one of our MacBook Pros with Windows 7 installed. The computer was booted into Windows 7 (it's strictly used as a Windows machine by this particular user) and after a time of inactivity it went to sleep. It wouldn't wake up from it's sleep so we tried a hard boot. At that point we would get the grey screen, the Apple tone wouldn't sound off and it would just go to a black screen (by default we have it booting to windows). So then we reset the PRAM. Now, we get the apple tone and we can boot into the Mac side. But when we try and boot into Windows, we get a blank screen.
What's even more interesting, if I try and boot into a Windows install disk to do a boot repair, it gives me a black screen. If I even try to boot from a live Linux cd, I get a blank screen! When important thing I then noticed was that the cd spinned for a couple minutes, then stopped. So I began to wonder if it was still loading the OS like expected, but just wasn't displaying it.
So I booted into Windows, got the blank black screen. Then I went into another computer, fired up remote desktop and voila! I'm in the machine!
So the problem is this: When booting into ANYTHING other than OS X, the display turns off.
    What can we do?

    Hello there,
I have a similar problem! Windows 7 shutdown unexpectedly and since that I can not reboot in windows anymore only with safe mode where everything is a mess.
Also when it's trying to reboot in windows a blue window appears, says something about drivers  and it is counting something (79.78...till100)but  I m not able to read it cause it disappears immidiately and then black screen and then it turns to reboot in mac which works fine.
I m sorry if I confused you with my english...
    If anyone knows please help!
    Thanks

  • Cannot boot into Windows

You have probably heardd this a thousand times, but...............
I have installed Solaris 10 on a hard drive with Windows XP Pro & Windows XP Pro 64 bit on other partitions.
Although the GRUB option to boot into Windows is there, chosing it results in the system hanging (ie black screen with just a flashing cursor).
Attempting a repair with XP 64 bit results in an error message to the effect that a "valid partition etc etc" does not exist.
Both the XP and XP 64bit paritions are still there and I can access everything on them from Windows on a second disk.
I therefore take it that the MBR has been changed.
So, you know the next silly question - how do I fix it so I can boot into my Windows XP Pro & Windows XP Pro 64 bit ?
    Mike

It is advisable to be a bit more conservative and to perform backup of MBR before starting installation in quite complex environment. Appropriate command may have the form:
    dd if=/dev/hda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1
    Restoring:
    dd if=mbr.bin of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
Here hda is a plug-in, sda may be necessary on other hardware platform.
But at present the milk has been spilled, so this tip is for future use. At first You should check the contents of grub.conf file in Your Solaris boot catalog. I assume that You can start Solaris. Are the partitions with Windows correctly enumerated? Remember that grub numbering starts with 0 (zero). If all is OK, You can try (without any warranty) following grub reinstallation procedure:
    1) Boot from installation DVD and start single user shell.
    2) Next issue a command:
    /a/sbin/installgrub -m /a/boot/grub/stage1 /a/boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c0d1s0
    3) Check grub.conf contents - it should perform loading from the first disk. The value c0d1s0 depends on details of Your installation.
Additionaly I assume that You have installed Windows operating system on separate partition. All Windows data, i. e. Your user data are on another partition. In such a case You may try as a last resort reinstallation of Windows followed by new Solaris installation (+ previous MBR backup).
    Good luck!
    Mark

  • X102e - Hard drive does not boot into Windows

Hi, I was trying to reinstall Windows on my X120e.
I tried clean install with Windows 7 Professional, but the hard drive does not boot into the Windows once it has done the first phase of the install(you know, the copying part)
After the restart done by Windows, it goes as far as "Starting Windows" but does not actually boot into the Windows.
When I try to install Windows with another HDD, the device works well, but I can't swap the HDD because it is not 7.5mm think HDD.
Is there any possibility the HDD will work trough any software-level process? The HDD works fine as external HDD when tested with external HDD adapter, and installs well. only problem is that it fails to boot

    Thank you for reply.
This is not exactly the issue. I was talking about the HDD originally installed in the PC.
The PC successfully recognizes the external disk I used to install the Windows, but the problem was that I did not boot into the "First boot" screen, which basically works on the already installed data.
As of now I have installed an SSD and is working fine. strange part is that HDD works just fine when I use it as an external HDD via adapter. Strange huh?
