Imac bootup problem

I'm having bootup problems with both my imac and MacBook Pro. It's a coincidence that both are having similar problems I'm sure and wonder if anyone can shed some light on my plight? It's doubly frustrating!
I've gone through the safe boot method and then press restart but both of them still hang as soon as I try to open an application. e.g if I go to the apple icon to "About this computer" it just stalls and stays on the spinning ball. I've also tried the Ctl+cmd+ R option a few times but keep going round in circles. Any suggestions?

I agree I should jus be able to drag them off the sidebar,. However it's not the case they are unselectable (unlike My Applications Desktop Documents etc which when you click on them the respective file is displayed. These three items , if you click on them the highlight remains owhere it is. say on Documents. Ifyou click, hold, then drag them off the sidebar , as soon as you release the mouse they just return to their position on the sidebar!!!

  • Final K8N2P bootup problems solved...!

When I first built this system last week I experienced a really annoying bootup problem when booting into WinXP....the system would lock up with a blue screen *Machine Error* every single time....so I loaded the "failsafe" bios settings, booted into XP finally, and then began a process of elimination among the bios settings to try and determine which ones disagreed with WinXP so much....  (Oh, joy!)
To make a long and tedious story very short, I eventually found that I had to manually *disable* UDMA auto-config for my empty hard-drive slot of IDE0 secondary channel, and in combination with that had to *disable* UDMA auto-config for both of the DVD/CD-ROM devices I had then which were located at IDE1 primary and secondary. (All jumper settings for the drives were correct, btw, and the machine error manifested whether I set CS or M&S or, in the case of my WD boot drive, "stand-alone.")  Once I did that, I could boot fine from IDE0 prime autoconfigged @ UDMA5, and my two IDE1 devices would then boot with PIO4 set by the bios's PIO autoconfig. I had to set it up exactly this way to boot--doing one or the other as regards each IDE channel would result in the Machine Error that I didn't want see--so I had to do both, in other words, to boot.
In reading the forums here I  saw mention of ps2 keyboard problems, but replacing my PS2 kboard with a native USB kboard *did not* solve the problem or change its nature (had no problems with either native PS/2 or USB kboards.)  Then I read about config problems people had with Audigy2's, so I removed  my A2Zs card, refreshed the CMOS, and rebooted--right back into the Machine Error again (unless I manually setup the IDE channel UDMA autoconfig as described above, of course.)  So my A2Zs (0350) was not the cause of the problem.  I did the same thing with my TX4200 PCI RAID controller--again, without positive result.  Last, I disabled WinXp SP2's Data Execution Prevention to see if that might have been the cause--it was *not* (so I reenabled it with the OptIn policy.)  So by then I knew the problem was not caused by my keyboard, my A2Zs, DEP, or my PCI RAID controller--any one of which, of course, *might conceivably* have caused a resource conflict of some kind--so I had to to test out all of these avenues.
That done, I had a hunch and went out and picked up a couple of new DVD/CD-W drives (as described now in my SIG), and lo and behold, from the first attempt I could successfully boot into XP without the Machine Error that had defeated my best efforts at troubleshooting for all of last week--I could boot fine with all of the bios settings for IDE 0&1 UDMA and PIO set to "auto" without incident for the first time!  I was also a bit surprised to see that these new DVD/CD's run natively in UDMA 2--not PIO4 (multi-word DMA) as had both of my former CD-type drives on IDE1.
So the problem having been solved in this fashion I will make the following observation about the K8N2P (I'm running stock bios 1.3):  this board does not like *old crap* connected to it!....  Heh...  My former CD-type drives were scarcely two-years older than the drives I installed today (according to their tagged manufacturing dates), but even so my old drives were "old enough" it seems to not get along with my k8n2P system's resource allocation!  Installation of the new drives solved the last remaining problem that I had, I'm very glad to say.
Although I didn't have to, I also got rid of my old TEAC floppy drive--and replaced it with a USB HDD which is so quiet and unobtrusive I have to pinch myself to make sure it's there...
Finally, along the lines of "old stuff"  I did note that the board does not seem to recognize PS/2 devices using PS/2-to-USB adaptors of any description--so go native whether PS/2 or USB and you should be fine.
I'm certainly relieved--hope this account helps a few folks!

Did you by the way try with one of the old ones as the only optical on the IDE1 port , or have the opticals on IDE0 and harddrive on IDE1.
Some has had success in swapping it around if i remember correctly.
Thanks, syar....  I'm just relieved that everything is working as expected now as it was a bit of a bummer to have to go to a bootup workaround for a new system over something as routine as IDE autoconfig.
Those older drives, a Samsung CD-RW/DVD SM332 and a Lite-On LTR32123S CDRW, came out of my former nf2 (Chaintech 7njs) system--that the wife will inherit from My Most Beneficent Self (which of course was my excuse to build a new system)--and if I recall correctly it seems the combo presented some problems for me there which I finally solved by going to a cable select setting for them in the Chaintech.  So maybe it's just the particular combination of these drives in my case, or possibly something less than completely compatible optical-drive support from the nVidia IDE controller implementation...?  I didn't try swapping them on the channels, but I did try setting the IDE 0 secondary UDMA bios config to "auto" while disabling the UDMA auto-config for IDE1 prime and second--and still got the machine error, and vice-versa.  It does indeed seem to me as if these newer platforms are a bit pickier about what you hook up than maybe was the case in the past (with nf2 and circa core logic.)
Edit: Wanted to add as well that these new DVD/CDRW drives (manufactured mid '04) are *a lot* quiter in operation (aside from being generally faster.)  Spinning up, the old drives reminded me of a washing machine in the "spin" cycle...  I have to listen to even hear these--what a difference a couple of years can make, eh?

Quit the game and restart the iPad.
To quit the game - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that doesn't work try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Get a lens cleaner disc. One with brushes and try that. CDs and DVDs use different lenses, so since CDs load and play, I strongly suspect a dirty lens.

  • IMac boot problems

    Hi,
I have a iMac(iMac9,1) here which experiences some boot problems. If you try to boot "normally" it just sais "No bootable device". Keycode's don't work so I imagened that the firmware password was active. And indeed; holding the option key gets me to a password an after that a screen where I can choose where to boot from.
If I start from the harddisk, most of the time Mac OS X starts. But it takes a very long time and the performance after starting isn't that great either. I repaired the harddisk using the disk utility on the Mac OS X DVD and tried to delete the firmware password(so I could try to reset the NVRAM at startup). But it just doesn't reset, althought it should(I even couldn't change the password while starting from the DVD). That seemed very odd.
By the way; using the startup disk utility gets me nowhere either.
Also if I reinstalled Mac OS X, it would do fine until the very end, where I got an error. The installation works but with the same boot problems.
Since the "no bootable device"-problem seems to be a Windows problem, I tried to recreate a windows partition so I could after that delete it again. But opening the bootcamp assistent just gives me an error saying that I need to update my ROM-software, which I can't update because it has the newest version already.
Is there any way to just reset the EFI?(there is no firmware restoration disk for this mac)
    I hope someone can help!
    Regards,
    Dennis

    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • IMac Disk Problems; Won't boot and other bizzare behaviour

Well I've been thru most that I can think of; My iMac won't boot. Problem with diskcorruption. fsck in single user won't fix, DiskWarrior stops at rebuilding directory, I have reset PRAM, booting to 10.3.6 stops at loading LoginWindow; DiskWarrior is been the only CD I've been able to boot with. I tried to boot with install Disks for 10.2 and 10.3 but as the boot starts these CDs get ejected. While in single user mode I can navigate around my filesystem except for my home directory; I get a disk error when I go there. Well it appears (1) to be a B-tree problem related to my home directory
    (2) but why can't I boot from install CDs
    (3) why can't I boot in safe mode?
    (4) think there's going to be any way to save my data?

You can reset the PMU yourself. Only press it once. That may help you bootup on your install disk.
As far as the corruption goes, If DiskWarrior can't fix it, nothing will. You'll have to Erase and Install. First see if the free demo of Data Rescue can see your stuff. If it can and it's important enough, you can buy the full version. You could also try hooking up another Mac in Target Disk Mode, and see if you can retrieve you stuff that way.
This is the best way to Erase and Install. First backup all your important stuff, if you can, as the following will erase everything on your drive; it will be unrecoverable. Put your install disk in your Mac and Restart while holding down the C key. In Tiger, When you get to the install screen, don't click install and go to the title bar at the top of the screen and click on Utilities (in earlier OS's click on the installer menu).
Click on Disk Utility and choose the hard drive you want your OS on. Then click on the Erase tab. In Tiger, click on the Security Options button near the bottom (it's similiar for Panther and Jaguar).
Once in there choose Zero Out Data (write zero's in earlier versions). This will map out any bad blocks on your drive and bring it back to almost new condition (providing there's nothing wrong mechanically with it, bad bearings, defective or damaged surface, etc.).
Once this is done, go back to the install screen and begin the "Erase and Install" installation. This will put a factory fresh system on a clean hard drive.
    Cheers!

  • IMac printing problem with HP Photosmart 7150

I've just bought a 27 inch iMac and I'm having problems printing out of iPhoto 9. I select for eg, 4 X photos per page and it prints about 10% of the page before spitting it out. I've downloaded the latest driver for my HP Photosmart 7150 printer (Gutenprint v5.2.5) but still no good.
The print monitor window always says it is printing Page 1 7%. Weird.
    Any ideas?? Thanks in advance.
    Dan

I've got the same problem on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and Gutenprint 5.2.5 when printing on the 7150 - it prints about 10% (and skewed at that) and spits out the page. This occurs when printing from any app.
I am only able to print in draft mode which is not suitable for anything I need to do.
I realize this printer is no longer officially supported, but any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Mike.

  • Mid 2006 iMac Boot Problem (Since latest firmware update)

I have a Mid 2006 17" iMac. Ever since the latest firmware update in early December, about every other startup I've been having boot problems. After the white screen with the Apple Logo and the spinning wheel it goes to a blue screen like normal, but instead of the 'Loading Mac OS X' white window popping up it stays blue and the spinning loading wheel starts. I've left it loading for quite a while before and nothing changes. I have to do a force shut off by holding the power button. and then I start it up and it will boot normally.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Actually, I think it'san early 2006.

  • IMac 27" Problems galore

    I'm pretty much at my wits end with my 27" i7 iMac. Its the 4th iMac I've owned and the first to have any problems. The problem list is extensive and since I am a pro user is causing me a lot of heartache and loss of work;
*constantly grumbling hard drive (known complaint I believe)
*wireless keyboard gets disconnected randomly and quite often
*some programs - most often its itunes and logic pro - won't open. The logo bounces in the dock and then nothing. The only way I can get them to work is to restart my computer - a less than satisfactory solution.
*computer randomly wakes itself up from sleep
*when waking from sleep logic pro is often crashed and needs to be force quit.
*logic frequently crashes or runs out of memory even though I have a VERY fast machine running projects that my lesser iMacs had no problems with
*sometimes the computer refuses to shut down; even if there are no programs running
I am an experienced mac user and take good care of my machines - everything is up to date and I've tried all the troubleshooting advice I've been given by apple. Apple will not replace the machine without first replacing the HD - something that will be a gross inconvenience to me and is not guaranteed to work.
Does anyone have any fixes for any of the issues above?

    comprachio wrote:
ah right I follow now. To do that I'll either have to buy another HD or wipe my bootcamp HD:( Neither is an appealing option though.
I have two external drives for backup: One for Time Machine, one for SuperDuper!. I wouldn't think about doing otherwise, as they complement each other functionally. Regardless of your current issue, I (and I think most folks) would strongly recommend that you do indeed get a second external backup drive, for a clone backup (either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner). You may as well do that now, as it will then enable you to create the clone (as I said, I believe it's something that you really should have anyway) and use it to help diagnose your current problem. And if it turns out tht your internal drive is failing, it's much easier to use a clone than TM to recover everything to a new internal drive.
I got my iMac at the start of December 2009. HD is WDC WD1001FALS-40U9B0 which is identical to the HD in my last iMac (which didn't grumble or groan).
I thought perhaps it was an old platter. Guess not.
Personally, I never had much confidence in WD drives...but I know a lot of folks who simply love them. I used to think that Seagate was the only way to go. However, I've changed my opinion of Seagate of late. In fact, I don't think any of the drive manufacturers are currently building quality products: They've off-shored most of their production to second/third-rate assemblers and suppliers and, consequently, lost significant quality oversight and control. Mind you, that's simply my opinion, but if you mouse around the newsgroups and forums and read experience-based user opinions, you might arrive at a similar conclusion.

  • Windows 7 64 bit on iMac display problems and instability

I received my iMac 27" quad core with 8 gig ram & 2 x 1 TB hard drives last Friday. I'm using Boot Camp to run windows 7 64 bit on maximum 2560 x 1440 screen resolution.
I get intermittent but often display problems in windows 7. I get areas of the screen covered in little yellow dots or blue squares (never red artefacts.) This will happen at random areas of the screen, inside an open window, around borders of windows and so on. Most often the screen will go black and come back with a message in the bottom right corner of the screen saying 'Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered' with the sub message saying 'display driver ATI radeon family stopped....etc'. Sometimes I lose the screen wallpaper. Once I've had the system just shut down, once I've had Photoshop seize up and I had to do a cold reboot. Could this be an overheating problem or resolution too high problem or driver problem? Windows 7 tells me my drivers are up to date. I tried installing the drivers for the card from ATI's website which made no difference
The reason I bought a Mac is because it's the only effective way to code for the Mac family of OS's in XCode. The reason I didn't just attach a miniMac to my PC monitor was because there's rather a lot of advertising by Apple about the fact that you can use a Mac with a PC OS via Apple's own Boot Camp. Now I have a lot of Windows software (some of which is not available for the Mac or requires buying again) sitting on an unstable system. Any ideas would be much appreciated...

Sorry, that thread got moved for edit and as a user tip... which I didn't want and won't be doing....
    Here is the post:
A tip and workaround for how to get ATI mobility/laptop drivers so that Windows no longer thinks the ATI is a desktop card:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11286987
    Summary (my own edit steps):
    1. Install Boot Camp 3.0 and upgrade to 3.1
    2. Uninstall graphic drivers and run Driver Sweeper
    http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
    instead of:
removing the crashing driver by going into windows 7 setup via its install cd and deleting the ati driver manaully
    3. Install ATI Mobility (link)
    4. Uninstall ATI (Programs control panel?) Device Manager (rollback; uninstall?)
    5. Device Nanager: update driver and BROWSE BACK to 8.681 (the original apple driver that was causing freezes and purple artifacts) - navigate to /Apple/Drivers/ATI
(Apple uses) a 4850 card in the iMac, its modified a bit for apple. Enough that desktop drivers don't work, and modded-for-laptop desktop drivers don't work either.
Now the upshot of using modified drivers is that it FORCES the catalyst control panel to be installed, meaning you get a few more options to mess around with the card.
I couldn't use the original apple drive, it locks up, the newer one had banding, the newer radeon drivers direct form ATI wouldn't work until they were modded and then they cause black screens.
SO the solution, as obscure as it was, was to download ACTUAL mobility Radeon drivers - version 10.3 still, but made for laptops.
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
THESE drivers I was able to install - and here is where things changed.
THIS driver changed they way windows saw the video card in device manager.
As I mentioned before, its NOT a desktop card, its a modified laptop card, but installing mac drivers makes windows THINK its a full desktop card, and running the original 8.681 driver crashed it.
Once installed 10.3 LAPTOP driver it now appeared in device manager as a MOBILITY card.
    +These Steps "should" work:+
    delete ATI driver manually
reinstall apple driver after that and see if that works,
    otherwise try the steps above
(mod drivers, remove via windows recovery off setup disk, install laptop drivers, reinstall apple driver over it)

  • Windows 7 on iMac. Problem with wifi-connection.

Hi! I recently installed windows 7 on my 27" iMac (latest model). Everything works great besides that the wifi is much slower when i run windows then when i run os x. When i connect directly with a cable in windows the speed is as it should be. Figured it must have something to do with the drivers, so I installed the latest bootcamp drivers but the problem will still remain. I've googled for a solution, noticed that other people have the same problem but can't find a concrete solution.
    Please help me somebody!

Just setting up iCloud on my iMac 10.9.2, my problem is when trying to sign out/off from iCloud it comes up with a verification code that is being sent to my land line, I'd changed the numbers in my Apple ID and they show as changed but the land line number still shows as number that the verification code is being sent, I prompt "Don't have access to this phone" and that's no help at all.  The only way I can sign out /off from iCloud is to uncheck everything that I wanted to keep in the cloud????
Thanks in advance for any help.

Skip the iCloud sign in for now.
Once you reach the home page, go to settings and sign out of FaceTime and Messages.  This should also sign you out of iCloud.
Go to iCloud in settings and sign in with the correct Apple ID.
    If that does not work
    Skip the iCloud sign in
Go to Apple ID.apple.com and sign in
Change your Apple ID to the old one
Delete iCloud account on your device with the old Apple ID and the same password.
Go back to the website, change your Apple ID back to the current one. You will receive an email to verify the account. Verify first.
Sign into iCloud on your device with the correct Apple ID and password
