Imac brightness control is stuck at half

The brightness control on my brand new iMac 27" appears to be "stuck" at half-way.  The display is not very bright and I'd like to increase it, but when I press the F2 brightness key, it will go down, but not up past half-way.  Is this a retina display thing or indicative of some problem.  It does appear dark and I'd like to brighten it up some.

First, turn off auto-brightness. Open System Preferences > Displays, untick "Automatically adjust brightness" and set up the brightness with F1 and F2 keys

  • New 27" iMac Brightness Control Missing

I have a brand new 27" iMac. Currently the only things plugged into it are the Apple-branded wireless keyboard and mouse that were included with the iMac and ethernet. I waited for the 10.9.2 update to see if that would resolve the issue, but it has not. I have also performed multiple PRAM and NVRAM resets.
The F1 and F2 keys on the Apple-branded keyboard do not decrease or increase the brightness of the internal display. In System preferences -> Display, there is no brightness slider at all. It is behaving as if I plugged in a generic 3rd party display.
I am about to copy over the
    AppleBackligt.kext
    AppleBacklightExpert.kext
    AppleUSBDisplays.kext
from an identical 27" iMac (that doesn't have this issue) to see if that will resolve the issue.
Unfortunately, a complete reinstall of Mavericks is not an option at this time.
Thank you in advance for all your help and suggestions.
    Edit: fixed title typo

It is currently unavaible for reinstall, due to the time (albeit short) required. If I can't fix this another way, that's the route I'd like to take. I'm just hoping I can find a more direct solution, and to find out if this issue is just this machine or broader.
The steps I plan on taking right now are,
Verify the display is properly set up by Apple (maybe the internal USB isn't plugged in right?)
Replace .kext files listed above from an identical iMac with working brightness.
Dump any preferences related to the display I can find.
    Reset NV/PRAM again.
    Reinstall the OS.
    Replace.

  • IMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!

iMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!
Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all.  I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again.  Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows.  Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

  • Windows 8.1 update and brightness control

I have a DELL XPS L521X with Windows 8.1 (I had windows 8 some days ago) and I have had two problems:
    1) I did not allow Windows to upgrade to 8.1 and it forced me to do it. It gave me 15 minutes to save progress and do it. I was watching the NBA finals on my computer and it was the only thing I had to watch the game. The installation lasted the whole second
half the game and I WAS NOT ABLE TO WATCH IT DUE TO THIS, YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW I AM FEELING ABOUT NOT USING WINDOWS EVER AGAIN... How can I prevent it from ever upgrading anything without my consent? I had already turned off updates from Control Panel\System
and Security\Windows Update but it didn't help.
    2) My brightness control became broken after the 8.1 update. I had to manually pick the older Intel HD 4000 driver to have it working again or else my eyes would stop functioning after such a bright display. I had to switch to the 9.17 driver version from
September 2012. Where can I get the lastest WORKING version of the driver?
Please stop making me loose days fixing Windows issues...

    Hi,
We have set the GP to disable Windows 8.1 update in Windows store, you can check it here:
How to Disable “Update to Windows 8.1 for Free” Notification in Windows 8 Store?
    http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-update-to-windows-8-1-for-free-notification-in-windows-8-store/
For your second issue, it's not only related to Windows, but also the driver provider. Microsoft is working together with the device manufacturers and partners to deliver update package and try the best to solve the compatible issue and bring a great improvement
on user experience. But you know, it will take some time.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Failure of Shades, DarkAdapted and Brightness Control

My iMac display is too bright even at it's lowest setting.
A new profile in Display Preferences can't deal with this and the contrast control in Universal Access also doesn't help.
I've tried 3rd party software. Brightness Control continually loses it's setting when the screensaver starts. Shades doesn't work for me because it leaves the pointer undimmed and that small too bright area is right where I need to look. And DarkAdapted is limited by the same screensaver problem as Brightness Control.
I sure wish Apple displays could dim adequately as in the past.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

I have DarkAdapted Pro, with registered version, it load your profile at mac os login, and darkadapted its a real bright control, not like brightcontrol (deform colours)...
One question, do you have bright gradient left to right on your mac 24 alu?.. more bright at left side of your monitor, to view this, move one window at the left, and then move it at the right, if you see one variation of white values then the gradient is there!... ok it is my problem and a lot of people are at the same situation like me... not sure if it is a general problem...
    Ok see you bye!

  • Brightness control problem after returning from Stand By - T500

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T500 under Windows XP SP2.
In Power Manager, I have created a custom power management scheme and set the brightness to 80%. This works fine when I boot up the machine, but when I return from Stand By mode (sleep) the machine automatically sets the brightness to 100%. I will then have to use to brightness control buttons to set it back to 80%. This is very annoying and obviously a bug.
I have the latest BIOS and Power Manager version installed.
Can someone offer a solution please?

I found your post after searching as I hae the exact problem you describe - I turn off the screen using Fn F3 and later when I wake the display the brightness jumps to 100% and I cannot get it to turn down to any level. It's stuck at 100%. Yup, just tried closing-n-opening the lid the screen goes to my previously set brightness level.
my drivers are current as at 2010-03-26 (today)
Running a downgraded XP W500 model...
    a bug for sure!

  • 10.4.9 removes Brightness Control from System Preferences?!

Has anyone else noticed that the Intel 10.4.9 update has removed Brightness Control from their System Prefs?!
maybe it's just mine... seems unlikely!!!

No, mine still has it. Perhaps it no longer thinks you can adjust the brightness. You may try the "standard" repair techniques to see if it will come back: Repair permissions, repair the disk (you must start up from installer DVD or use Safe Mode--which takes a while to boot because it is checking the disk), and then running the combo updater instead of Software Update.

  • GP60: After installing new NVIDIA driver, no brightness controls work now.

Hey guys! I have a small problem I'm hoping someone might know how to fix. I just installed a new NVIDIA driver update (I'm now on build ) and now my brightness controls won't work. My computer is stuck in a very bright setting, and I don't know how to fix it. I've restarted the computer, and I've put it into hibernation and restarted it.
Before i did the hibernation, my computer was stuck in GPU mode (it would only use the GPU, even if all I was doing was using PowerPoint). The hibernation/restart fixed that, but not my brightness. Not sure if the problems are related, but throwing that in there too just in case.
I also don't know if this is related as well, but my NVIDIA control panel will not work either; it says that I don't have a display that uses it or something like that. Again, probably TMI, but better safe than sorry!
I'd appreciate any advice that I could get! Thanks!
    Specs:
    MSI GP60
    intel i5-4200
NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M/2 GB DDR3 (my problem child today).
Update: Now my computer is back in GPU-only mode and nothing is helping it swap out of it. I'm thinking the two are related now...

Have you installed the Intel graphic driver?
The hot key for brightness is controlled by EC & Intel graphic driver.
Please refer to the product webpage to download the latest Intel graphic driver:
    http://www.msi.com/search/gp60/product/1
Pick your model and select Download and your OS type to find the drivers.

  • No Brightness Control

    Hi
No brightness control slider in Display prefs panel....
Having recently become a victim of this I have been trawling all around the net for an answer.
Seems this a known problem as I realised pretty quick looking around the net. There seems to be no fix for this and people use third party brightness apps to resolve the issue.
I assume that by the numbers that this affects Apple are aware of it.
I would just like my Mac to work as it was designed...

    Hi
Took a bootable backup of my Mac Pros HD and booted my iMac with it, everything works OK.
So the problem lies within the Mac Pro somewhere, somehow...

  • Brightness control keys stop working after booting MacOSX

I bought a new iMac 27" a couple of weeks ago, and I installed Windows 7 using bootcamp.
All the control keys (brightness, volume, etc) works ok on Windows until I reboot it in MacOSX. When i start windows again, brightness controls keys stops working, leaving the screen with the maximus bright, which is killing my eyes.
Reparing boot camp drivers doesn't do the trick. Am I missing something?

Try fn + the controls. It might be that Windows defaulted to those buttons as F1, F2, etc. Using fn while pressing the buttons will 'tell' Windows that it has to listen to the Bootcamp software and lower the brightness.

  • Using F1, F2 as brightness control

I need to enable the "Use all F1, F2 as standard function Keys" option in system preference because I run an Application that requires F6 for a function.
However I miss using F1 and F2 as brightness controls so I set those as shortcuts in the shortcuts page.
Whever I push those buttons, they just give me a screen flash as if they are not assinged, please help!
I know I can always use Cmd+F1/F2 to enable the special function but it would be useful to be able to assign the shortcut myself.

Update: I went to the Apple Store to find out the current gen rMBP does not have this option in it's System Preference pane. Not sure if thats the reason the shortcut is not available. I'm using late 2012 iMac on the current 10.9.2 release. The quck fix is to install the 3rd party "FunctionFlip" pref addon.

  • Brightness Control not working after Windows 8 install...

    Hi All,
I have a late year 2010 MBA core2duo with 4GB of ram, and I was running Windows 7 for a long time and recently bought a Windows 8 upgrade key. I heard the boot camp drivers were updated so I decided to load it up. I installed the new boot camp drivers on the Windows 7 side before the upgrade (had to use the command line to do the driver upgrade).
Windows 8 is all installed and the only issue I have is the brightness control doesnt work at all. I disabled the adaptive brightness as a lot of threads have been saying. Anybody have any ideas what I need to do to fix this?? It seems to be stuck on BRIGHT.

I have been having the issue of no brighness control when running windows through bootcamp for about 6 months now and have not found any applicable solution online.
While messing around trying to figure it out yet again I noticed that my monitor driver was signed by team viewer...
Sure enough clicking the roll driver back button resolved the issue by rolling the driver back to the Microsoft driver...
    So long story short:
Right click "My Computer" click properties
Click device manager (lop left of window)
    Expand Monitors section
    Double Click monitor
    Click driver tab
If the driver here is not signed by Microsot or Apple click the roll back button. My driver version is 6.1.7600.16385 (Driver date 6/21/2006)
Rolling this back instantly resolved my issue. I will now propagate this post to all the threads I saw regarding this issue.
    I am running windows 7 x64 Ulti on a 15" rMBP.
    Best of luck

  • G580 brightness control animation

    Hi.
I just got my G580 laptop today. It's the one with Intel Core i7 3520M and Nvidia GeForce GT 630M @  2GB DDR3 and 8 GB RAM in my case.
I installed the drivers from the dvd after installing a genuine win 7 x64 professional N.
The animation for the brightness control just stopped working. You know.. the thing you get on the screen when using the Fn+up/down keys. It's stuck in one position and it doesn't follow the brightness level which I can adjust normally (no problems there thank goodness).
Any ideas ? Why's that happening ?  I think the nvidia driver performed some update at some point. Please don't just point to that... be helpful instead.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Welcome to the forums
You mean the on screen display which comes after pressing the hotkey? For that you will have to install the lenovo energy management driver.

  • 27" Cinema Display - No Brightness Control

I have read over all the threads here and the internet.  I have an iMac (black back) that my 27" Cinema display is connected to.  USB and Displayport are both connected.  Everything appears just fine.  However, I cannot adjust the brightness on the Cinema display.  I have tried everything.  I even hooked it up to my Macbook Pro early 2011 model.  Still the same issue.  There is no brightness slider.  The slider only appears for the native display only.  Never the Cinema display.  What am I missing?
    Running Lion on both machines.

USB cable is connected.  It's not an SMC issue.  I have tried this on 3 iMac's and 1 2011 MacBook Pro.  Same issue on all machines.  Cinema display does NOT have brightness control.  Only the native screen.
Tried on OSX Lion 10.7 and  Snow Leopard 10.6.  Tried loading the 1.0 Cinema display firmware update.  Won't install on Lion and states it's not require on Snow Leopard 10.6.
Any other suggestions out there?  The display is full brightness it seems and it's annoying as crap.

  • Is it possible to use  one imac to control the screen of another?

    Hi,
I'm thinking of buying a new iMac. At present I have an older intel iMac (1.83, 17 inch, 2 Gigs ram, 250 hd) and I work mainly with Logic Pro 8. Logic Pro 8 has a node function which allows you to use the processing power of a second computer to enhance the processing power of the primary computer. My present iMac in my new setup would be the node computer to the new iMac. I already know I can use the processing power of my present computer but can I also use it's display? In other words can I use the new iMac to control the old iMac's screen? Thanks

One thing I'd caution you on, Logic node uses resources over an ethernet connection, which this screen sharing application also appears to be transmitted over. Using this screen sharing app, the internet, or any other networking application on the Logic Node computer will affect the amount of bandwidth available to Logic Node, reducing the amount of performance you get by having the second "node" computer hooked up.
It's possible that it may not be very noticeable, but I'd definitely do a test with and without the screen sharing app to see how far you can push it.
I'm curious to see if this works well, I wouldn't mind using my PC laptop for a second monitor.
