IMac broken. trying to diagnose problem.

So my neighbors iMac is pretty old I do not know exactly what model. It still starts up but and makes the noise but nothing shows up on the screen. my first reaction was the lcd screen. I tried to boot it from a external hdd (I held option when starting up) i dont know if thats what i do, but i have no way of choosing that drive because i cant see. so i am trying to connect a lcd monitor (not for a mac) to it. What cords do you think I would need and would that work? Also, if i plug it in while its off then turn it on would it autmoatically appear on the monitor or would I have to so some keyboard shortcuts and whatnot. Thanks a bunch. I need to find out so i know what to buy to fix it and really dont want to take it all the way to the apple store.

Support problem. The adviser tried to diagnose the failure of an application called JOTNOT PRO to update. He said he'd phone back at 8pm. I pick up his call at 8pm. Electronic voice: thank you for calling apple. We are now closed" So now I have 2 problems: the adviser had got me to reset so bye bye wifi passwords and settings. And then when he phones back as we agreed he's not actually on the phone, it's just a voice saying Apple Support is now closed! What on earth is going on at apple support I wonder.
Anyway, the original problem: an application called JotNot Pro fails to update. The error message says something like "you cannot update this cos either you bought it with a different Apple ID or somebody else bought it."
    Neither applies. Can anybody help?
PS. This is my first approach to the support community so please bear with me!

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

  • IMac as an external display, problem with trackpad/mouse pairing

    Hi,
I am trying to use the imac as an external display for a macbook air, which is well supported/advertised by apple.
I can toggle the display easily between the imac and the macookair, the problem I’m having is that I only have one wireless keyboard and one wireless trackpad. As I toggle the display, the paring/unpairing of both trackpad and mouse is a real hastle becuase I have to manually go into bluetooth preferences and adjust the settings for both devices.
Anyone using the imac as external display with an idea/suggestion how to make this process more friendly?
Thank in advance for any help.

I don't think you can.  Wish I had better news.  Target display mode for non-thunderbolt 27" Imacs worked OK.  I have done it myself on a late 2009 iMac.  The new iMacs can only go into target display mode when connected thunderbolt to thunderbolt.  So a new macbook or macbook air can do the trick but your dell can't.  What you can do is remote desktop or VNC to the dell.  Now your dell screen will show up but in a smaller window.

I need to download dell drivers to a jumpdrive connected to my iMac.  Will this cause problems with my Mac?

Thanks.  These drivers are for the audio, etc. for a dell laptop I purchased used.  ( Needed something cheap for a training video that would only run on Windows.  Tried Emedia player but picture was too fuzzy.)  Dell support said I should contact Apple support for instructions on how to get the drivers onto the jumpdrive.  Any tips on doing that?

My Apple TV controller stopped working with my tv box. I changed battery. But the remote controller works in the store and it controles my iMac . What is the problem?

    Hi Ron.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.

  • IMac Keeps Trying To Eject.

My iMac keeps trying to eject every few minutes. The eject symbol appears on the screen and then the drive will attempt to eject whether there is a CD in there or not. This problem has only been happening for the past few days.
My eject button doesn't appear to be stuck down and the keyboard is only a few months old. Is it a case of me having a knackered keyboard or is it a glitch with my iMac? I realise it is hard to answer without seeing it but I'd like to know your opinions and whether this is a common problem.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello Maharishi
A couple of test you can try:
    1. unplug your keyboard for a time and see if the problem stops!
    2. any old USB keyboard will work for testing, connect up another to see if the problem persist.
If you think or now know that your keyboard is the problem, take it to your local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider and ask them to test it. All of your iMac's hardware including the keyboard & mouse are covered for 1 year and for 3 years with AppleCare.

iMac crashed, trying to use Time Machine backup. In Restore From:it only offers Macintosh HD on ..... (grayed). There are backups listed below. When I click on a current backup and click on continue I get a "Select a Destination" with Searching for disk, but nothing comes up.
I am connected to my Passport if that helps, but I think that is where it is getting the backup list.
Any help on how to proceed?
    Thanks,

Thanks for your help on this. I was trying to restore from a new drive. The problem I have is that Time Machine will not let me do so, so far.
When I go into 'Restore from Time Machine Back up) I can access the Time Machine HD ok. But then when I go onto next page (Select a Back Up) the 'Restore From' option only has the greyed out name of my crashed HD (this seems wrong?). If I continue the process to erase starts and then stops, message says:
An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk.
it only seems to want me to back up to my crashed HD which I have no intention of using

  • IMPORTANT WRT600N Logging only for diagnosing problems

I purchased a WRT600N and was attempting to use the logging capability to log to another computer. After MANY weeks of trying and working with Tech support I was finally given an answer.
The problem was, logging stopped each time after about 8-12 hrs. Let me say I have about 6 computers connected for my kids, wife and myself. We play games, surf the web, download stuff etc... almost 24/7 so my network has a lot of traffic.
After calling the corp. number I was sent to a support team that told me the logging in the WRT600N (and even the remote logging) was ONLY FOR DIAGNOSING PROBLEMS, NOT FOR 24/7 use.
And if I wanted to use it that way, I should log into my router and clean out the LOGS MANUALLY every 4hrs.
I mentioned it did not say logging would not work 24/7, and was told it did not say it WOULD work 24/7 either.
This is like saying if the router did not work 24/7 there was nothing saying it would.Any suggestions? Thanks!

No.. after leaving it hooked up for a few days to the remote logging,  the logging starts again...but the info is old data. I know it is old data because one morning it said one of my computers was sending out data at 7:30am.  That was impossible because the computer had been off for almost 7 hrs.    The logging works for 8-12hrs then stops, if you leave it hooked up...sometimes it starts again with old data but the correct timestamp...then will stop after a few hours...over and over.  But support says it is working they way it was intended.
I have worked for one of the big three auto companies in their Information Systems div. for the last 15 years and work with the larger Routers from Cisco and I have never seen this before.   It is clearly an issue in the firmware.

  • Fixing iMac(CRT) firmware/OS X problems

b I didn’t update the firmware on my iMac before trying to install OS X 10.2 or higher on a slot-loading iMac. How do I fix resultant bootup or screen problems?
    b Introduction
This topic is a summary of a fuller article which can be found here. It does not apply to tray-loaders but only to slot-loaders. How to differentiate between models
The latest firmware for slot-loading iMacs is 4.1.9. If OS X goes anywhere near an iMac with an earlier version then often peculiar screen problems are caused, or the iMac won’t start properly. In most cases it is possible to fix these problems. This topic explains how to do so.
All users who have installed OS X on a slot-loading iMac should make sure that their firmware is at version 4.1.9. Even if the iMac is working at the moment, problems may arise at any time.
If you are having problems then
b do not reset the PRAM
until the firmware is updated, as doing so can make the problems much worse.
To fix the problem you simply need to update the firmware. If your iMac is not behaving properly this can be a little tiresome, but usually not impossible.
    b Symptoms
The symptoms are well known and many users have experienced and overcome them:
    *     S0: OS X installation attempt fails; there may be a message “you need to update the firmware”; the iMac freezes (often with a grey screen); the CD is stuck in the drive
    *     S1: the iMac starts up but the screen is blank
    *     S2: the iMac starts up but the screen is dark and a strange colour
    *     S3: on power on or a restart, the green light comes on but nothing else happens
    *     S4: after the startup chime the iMac turns itself off after 7 – 10 seconds
    b Overcoming the symptoms
i S0: To get the CD out,
find the emergency eject button inside the right-hand end of the CD slot. Hold it in with a paperclip during power-on. (NB this then disables the CD drive till next power-off.)
    i To get round S3,
remove the power cord between reboots.
    i To get round S1,
after the iMac has booted, briefly press the main power button to send the iMac to sleep. Wait for the button to pulse orange, then press any key on the keyboard. Usually you will now have symptom S2.
    i If you have S2 or S1
and a 400 MHz iMac or later, there may be a VGA connector under a small panel close to the memory access panel on the back of the iMac. Many PC monitors will work if plugged in here.
    i If you have S4
then check the suggestions in the full problem solver.
    b Upgrading the firmware
The firmware resides on the logic board in non-volatile RAM. To install the latest version (4.1.9) and hence fix the iMac’s problems, you first need to boot OS 9.1, or 9.2.x from a local HD. If you have 9.0.x then you can download the 9.1 update from the Apple site.
Make sure you follow all the installation instructions carefully.
Once the firmware is installed (but not before), it is often worth doing an additional PRAM reset: on startup, hold down Apl-Opt-P-R and wait for the second chime.
The most stable version of OS 9 is 9.2.2, so now download and install these updates: 9.2.1 and 9.2.2.
If you need further help then contact Apple Support, check out the full problem solver, or post a new topic in the Apple Discussions iMac(CRT) Usage forum.
    Thanks to all contributors.

    Giles,
If OS X goes anywhere near an iMac with an earlier version then often peculiar screen problems are caused, or the iMac won’t start properly.
You may also want to mention that newer disk utilities such as DiskWarrior can make the iMac boot into Mac OS X, and cause this problem. There have also been a few instances where a user did not believe it was the firmware because they did not install Mac OS X, only boot from it.
(NB this then disables the CD drive till next power-off.)
Could you please fill me in - what does NB stand for?
You may also want to include some sort of disclaimer, that the problem can vary, and is not guaranteed to work for everyone, etc.
Its excellent overall. And, you're not even a full Mac user, which has to make things harder.
    Kyle-

  • IMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute

iMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
    I did this;
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    the result was.
the 'permissions' are sometimes wrong, but they repair
the hard drive is either repaired or OK
the iMac will then restart and work fine and sometimes shut down and restart OK
after replacing the Hard Drive I actually thought I had fixed it and went to bed late but happy,
on waking in the morning, however I was not so happy it fired up and then died after dong -> apple logo -> spinning cog -> dead!!
I would be grateful for any help
    Thanks
    Pete

    Hi Miriam,
    Thanks yes,
here we go -- after running disc utilities it tells me directory OK and disk OK (or something like that) When I replaced the Hard Drive, I started 'fresh' erased/formatted the hard drive (new Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB) and it has just got 'tiger' on it (and upgraded to whatever it is now I think I remember 4.11, I can't tell at the moment as I have got the back off) I didn't transfer any data I just took the old drive (Seagate 160GB) out and stuck the new one in.
I've just changed the battery (I didn't really think it would work, but I was still hopeful and I'd bought the battery anyway) I did the LED thing, the internal power button thing, and the resetting the SMU thing (with crossed fingers and bated breath) but -- so I'm thinking is it the power supply? I read some of Jim's weighty, but worthy tome and resolved to remove the power supply and have a look. On opening it up, it does look as though, one (at least) of the capacitors has 'blown' (by the way, just in case I sound like I know what I'm talking about, I don't of course, I'm just quoting Jim's words;-) I'd love to send you a picture of the inside of the power supply showing what I believe to be a 'blown' capacitator (and I'm going to try to send one to Jim as I think it might be useful to him and others. can I attach a photo in any way or would you like to send me your email address <Edited by Moderator>
    Thanks
    Pete
PS it's still 'weird' to me, why it starts and runs well, when started from tiger (or whatever) and then starts or restarts from the Hard Drive unless I leave it a few hours and come back and try to start it
again? wow it's late nearly 4.00am here in london UK.

iMac is trying to connect to a server that no longer exist on my network - I am looking for a solution to stop the error messages showing up. For instance, I have a contact in the address book that I need to change his picture and when I try to do that, for some reason, the server where the pics were stored appears as unavailble. The error message is not going away until the aplication is being closed.
    Appreciate any feedbacks.
    Thanks.

    Back up all data.
    1. If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane. Press return to confirm, or click Keep on Mac in the dialog that opens.
    2. From the list of groups on the left side of the Contacts window, select All On My Mac. If that group doesn't exist or is empty, skip this step. Otherwise, from the menu bar, select
File ▹ Export ▹ Export vCard
Save the exported contacts to the Desktop.
    3. Quit Contacts. Triple-click the text on the line below to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V), and press return.
A Finder window will open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.
    4. Launch Contacts. Your contacts will be gone. If you took Step 2, then from the menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import
and import from the file you exported. Your contacts will reappear.
    5. Re-enable Contacts in the iCloud preference pane, if you disabled it. Test. If the issue is resolved, delete the AddressBook folder and the vCard file on the Desktop and close the open folder window.
Otherwise, quit Contacts again and put the AddressBook folder back where it was, overwriting the newer one that will have been created in its place. Post your results.
