IMac calibration tips please!

Hi there all,
I would be ecstatic if anyone could lend me some tips as to how I go about calibrating my iMac.
When I have been working on images in Lightroom and Aperture and then create a jpg to export for printing at an online printers the overall quality has been awful. The colors are dull, flat lacking in saturation and generally quite disappointing. My screen has been set at full brightness when working up until recently when I tried a little trick to workaround the problem. Now after a few test prints on my home printer I learnt to dull the display and then pick up the brightness and color once more within my editing suites. This seems a little bit convoluted as a workaround and would really like to work with the display at a brightness setting I enjoy working with.
Can anybody suggest a way of calibrating that does not require a third party app or product, or does anyone have suggestions as to the best method of attack??!!
Many thanks in advance,
Nip

Hi nipfluff
Download the latest Leopard update from Epson for your printer:
http://esupport.epson-europe.com/ViewArticle.aspx?lng=en-GB&kbid=318461&data=+ab 4PwTTw7eujySdvU002F04GiMun4oEc0ki
Then in the *Display Preferences* for Color, uncheck the box for *Show profiles for this display only* and select the *Epson RGB* profile.
For me using the Epson profile works great:
1. my display is a little darker and a lot richer than using the iMac profile and
2. my Epson prints, scans and iMac Display all match perfectly.

  • 24" iMac Calibration issue PLEASE HELP!!!

    I have a first gen aluminium 24" iMac and recently noticed that my display was becoming warmer and duller, which I though was due to the life of the non-LED backlight. I went into sys prefs/disp to recalibrate to something more usable and I noticed that when I switch to another colour profile, the display would change to the selected profile but then snap back to the "iMac" profile after 1 sec. Nothing I do can make the profile changes stick.
    I then...
    - Opened ColorSync verified and repaired profiles (no problems found)
    - Reset the SMC
    - Restarted iMac and reset PRAM
    - Found the colour pref pane in the library and trashed the profile prefs
    None of the above have worked and what's even more annoying is that if I try and create a new profile, as I move the sliders in the calibration process, the display WB/Gamma etc. change with the movement on the graphs as expected but then the display snaps back as if no changes have been made even whilst my cursor is still holding one of the points out.
    If anyone could help me I'd be extremely grateful as I'm editing 2 films and going between my iMac and MacBook Pro and it's starting to cause real problems. I looked through discussions and can't find anyone with this "snapping" problem, only missing profiles/error messages.
    Many Thanks.
    Running Leopard 5.8

    I found out what was happening... I was running screen dimming software called 'Shades' which was messing up the colour profile allocation. I stopped this software running and I was able to recalibrate! I'm so pleased as I thought there was something wrong with my graphics card!

  • Looking for a second hand iMac - any tips please?

    Hi All
    Due to work I have primarily been to the dark side in the last few years, with just a Mk 1 Mac Mini for my photos and videos. Its almost crawling now, so its time for an iMac I think.
    I don't want anything too crazy, but I wasn't sure what amount of RAM would be good to run Snow Leopard? I wouldn't be doing any crazy photoshop stuff, maybe a bit of HD stuff in iMovie plus the usual iTunes & iPhoto usage, but I have no idea how much Snow Leopard really needs to run smooth with a few apps open.
    I run an online business and in the end I switched back to PC as I've always found Macs to be pretty slow for browsing, I'm guessing thats probably changed now?
    Anyway, any help or advice would be great. I'm probably gonna look for second hand so any suggestions (eBay UK etc) would be great!
    Many thanks
    Mark

    I'd really suggest just looking at Apple's refurb selection. Couple hundred off the top, same warranty, and you know you're going to be getting something of quality. Buy off a place like ebay, you never know what you're going to end up with. There are probably a lot of honest sellers on ebay, but it just takes one not so honest person to really ruin things for you.
    And Snow Leopard actually runs pretty well on 2GB of RAM. Runs reasonably well on only 1GB actually, but 2GB gets into the fabled "butter zone". I'd suggest probably 3-4GB if you're going to be doing any kind of video editing.
    So any 2009 21.5" iMac should fit the bill nicely for you.

  • I am trying to install final cut pro 6 onto my mac but a message keeps coming up saying its doesnt support a powerpc, anyone have any tips please?

    I am trying to install final cut pro 6 onto my mac but a message keeps coming up saying its doesnt support a powerpc, anyone have any tips please?

    If you have an Intel Mac and have recently upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion; here is a post I made in another similar thread:
    I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between Final Cut Pro or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the screen from your other Mac to view and work FCP in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCP (such as FCP X) and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:

    Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
    NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
    NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

    My iPhone 4 no longer appears in iTunes. But it does charge. Tried most tips please help someone!

    Hi there,
    No I didn't. Someone suggested in another thread that my iPod was registering as a disk instead of a device, so if I removed my iPod as a disk on Disk Utility then it would reload etc. and show up in iTunes. Which it didn't, and instead just cleared all my music (16,000 songs).
    So frustrating.
    Hope if you have the same problem you are able to find a better solution!

  • HT1751 I have moved my library from an external hard drive into my laptop music file but I am not able to open i-tunes when holding down the shift key as advised in step 4 and thus not seeing the library option box - any tips please??

    I have moved my itunes library from old computer to portable hard drive and then on, into new laptop, in music file. However I am then unable to open I-Tunes when holding down the shift button as directed in step 4 - this means I am not seeing the library choice box and cannot synch the tunes into ITunes library - any tips please?........Alan

    Close iTunes. Click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. If iTunes opens normally, close it,  and try again.

    Thank you for the update Dlawrenceusa.  I would recommend reviewing the installation logs for the updates that are failing to apply to determine the exact cause of the failure.  You can find details on how to locate and interpret the installation log files at Creative Cloud Help / Troubleshoot install issues with log files | CC.  You are welcome to post any specific error messages you discover to this discussion.

    Hi! I have an x-mini headset which im having trouble pairing to my iPhone 5s with bluetooth, any tips please?

    Cellular calling doesn't yet work reliably.
    Make sure you've followed the instructions in this support article. Note that both iCloud and FaceTime on the Mac must be signed in to the same Apple ID; those are two separate steps. Also note that the Mac and the phone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Ethernet won't work. Trying to pair the phone to the Mac as a Bluetooth device won't work either.
    If cellular calling still doesn't work, sign out of FaceTime and sign back in. You may have to do the same on the phone. The email address that you use as your Apple ID must be able to receive FaceTime calls.

  • HT1529 Where do i find the serial No on a IMac 4.1 please? I have looked on the "about this Mac" but it does not have the serial No on it!

    Where do i find the serial No on a IMac 4.1 please? I have looked on the "about this Mac" but it does not have the serial No on it!

    Until last July, the model identifier on every Intel Mac would tell you exact minimum and maximum expansion in terms of RAM, retail operating system, and any system specific required firmware updates, video and audio expansion capabilities, and patches for Wifi available.  The serial number is only of consequence if you wish to date a Mac down to the week.  This can help in determining system specific disks, available warranty, and exchange/repair program eligibility.  Outside of that the year and month can usually be narrowed down to a six month period with model identifier alone on all except MacPros.  So my question is, is it really that relevant for your needs?
