IMac can not share internet with new MBP

I just purchased a 13" MBP(10.5.7)and wanted to update software, register, etc. I'm trying to share the internet from my G5 iMac(10.5.7). With airport turned on,I've turned on internet sharing from ethernet to airport on the imac but the Radar icon does not display the "arrow" to show that the iMac is acting like a base station. The firewall setting in the security pref. is set to allow all incoming connections. i keep trying different combinations of settings but the only change is a light gray "monitor" icon on the airport radar in the tool bar. ( and I can't seem to repeat that)The new MBP sees the iMac in the airport drop down menue but does not connect, it says it needs a password but none was established on the imac. When opening safari is says not connected to internet. I've read many post regarding sharing but I must admit I'm confused. I thought this was supposed to be simple.
Thanks for any responses

I have done those things. I tried the same with an older ibook and three clicks and the airport icon showed an arrow (signaling it now is a base station) no problem but not on either of the leopard machines. is there a problem with sharing using leopard?
When I set the imac to share the ethernet connection and choose by airport the red Button changes to green. the preference window says "sharing your ethernet connection" but no change at the icon on the upper right menu bar. (I've always thought it changes to an arrow over the "radar" icon) if I close the sharing window and then reopen it or turn the airport on/off the internet sharing box becomes unchecked and sharing is turned off. I can't seem to get the radar icon to change and the sharing settings to stay "set".

GerleMan, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
    OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.

  • Macbook Pro running Snow leaopard can not share screen with Mac Pro running lion with "Back to my Mac"

Anyone else?  When I use back to my mac, I can get access to the files on my desktop, BUT, I can't screen share.  Screen share is sleected in settings and everything I know to check is set up right.  Back to my Mac ir running on both machines using the same sign in.
    Any ideas?

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
    1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
    2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
    3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

  • Why my iPhone 3GS can't share internet with another iPod, iPhone or iPad with iOS 6.x?

    Hi.
I am from Mexico, sorry from my 'english'.
I have an iPhone 3GS with iOS 6.1.3, i can share internet with USB and Bluetooth.
It's ok, but when want share, my iPhone 4S with iOS 6.1.3 doesn't detect the 3GS, and vice versa.
When i try connect with Bluetooth with a iPod Touch Fourth Generation with iOS 6.1.5, i can't too, they doesn't detect too.
When i try connect with Bluetooth with a iPod Touch Fifth Generation with iOS 7.0.4, it works!!
When i try connect with Bluetooth with a iPod Touch Third Generation with iOS 5.1.1, it works!!
¿What can i do? I can't connect with Bluetooth with whatever terminal with iOS 6.x.x

Your best bet is to switch phones with your carrier and get your 4S on the data account.
Otherwise, try resoring the iOS in your iPhone 3GS via iTunes.

  • Can't get internet with new Macbook pro

As the title says I can't seem to get internet with my new Macbook Pro.  I get wifi fine, use the password on my router and that works, but I still can't get connected to the internet.  I know the router works, as I can use another laptop on it.  Any ideas on what to do? (other than call Apple which I'm doing when I get out of work.)

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
Do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
which is what I think you did.

  • Can not surf internet with AOL dialup.

I can surf with wireless, but can NOT with AOL dialup. I can surf dialup when I load Safari.com on the AOL.
This problem is intermitent. I can surf with AOL 1 in 10 times.
When surfing with AOL it may crash with the rotating beach ball.
I have removed and installed a new AOL with their telephone support.
Problems began when I installed Quicken 2006, as it now crashes when I try to generate a report.

    Hi HPIC!
I can't help you with the Quicken issue, but I may be able to help you with AOL.
Since you are comfortable with uninstalling and reinstalling AOL, may I suggest that you use the instructions I have composed, found here How To Manually Uninstall/Reinstall AOL.
I think they may be a bit more complete, than what the AOL tech had you do.
    Good Luck!
EDIT: Before you do that though, try this. It may be an easier fix.
Sign Off, but don't quit AOL.
When signed OFF of AOL, but with the Sign-On screen open, click: SET UP > Expert Set UP.
Click : Add TCP Connection to bring up new dialog box.
Pull down the menu in Advanced Options - Connection Scripts:
Change the connection script to TCP (DO NOT use Airport)
Click Okay and close all windows.

  • Can't share internet with iPhone4 via Airport with MacBook Pro on Ethernet

I'm in Iraq being abused by a criminal ISP offering 256K (yes, kilobytes per second!) connectivity via a cat IV ethernet cable to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.9). I have a first-gen iPhone4 (16G, version 4.2.1), it will not connect to the internet via airport to my MacBook.  I'm getting a good wi-fi symbol on my iPhone, the Airport is correctly finding my MacBook's network, and it properly demands/accepts my WEP password.  But I cannot get mail, go on line or use any apps.
Under the DHCP tab on my MacBook's network on the iPhone's Settings/Wi-Fi page...I have a good IP Address and Subnet Mask.  Previously I've also had numbers show up on the Router and DNS lines as well...but they are now blank.  I have never had numbers on the Search Domains or Client ID lines.
Can anyone tell me what's missing to get my internet sharing working?
    Thanks!

OK, on your iPhone you have four fields that need to completed for any type of WiFi networking to operate.  The fields are (in order) the IP address of your device, the subnet mask for your network, the "router" IP address, and finally the DNS addresses.
I'm not sure what these numbers look like on an ad hoc network, but a typical router based network would look like:
Device IP:  192.168.1.x with x being between 2 and 255
    Subnet mask:  255.255.255.0
    "Router IP":  192.168.1.1
DNS:  usually a pair of IP address separated by a comma.  Sometimes this is supplied by the network you are conneccted to, other times you specify an address (like OpenDNS or Google's DNS service)
If your phone has an IP address of 169.x.x.x, it means that your ad hoc network is not supplying it with an IP address.  Make sure that the DHCP box is checked (the ad hoc network will assign an IP address) or manually assign IP address.
To be honest with you, I'd go out and buy a basic N router (about $40 US), plug it in to your ethernet connection, and connect your devices to that.  You get far better security as the router has a firewall and you can use WPA2-AES encryption on the wireless side - and it is easier to set up.

  • Can't share internet (via ethernet) with 2 Mac Pros

I've got 2 Mac Pros, but only one cable from my cable modem. (I'm aware I could get a router, but I don't want to do that yet.) So I've got ethernet going from cable modem to Mac Pro 1 (MP1) into its ethernet 1 port and it works perfectly.
Now I'd like to use MP1's ethernet 2 port to share internet with MP2. I can't get it to work.
Settings: on MP1, in System Prefs > Sharing > Internet Sharing, I have it enabled, and set to "Share your connection from Ethernet 1 to computers using Ethernet 2"
On MP2, it's set to DHCP. But internet doesn't work on it.
I can use file sharing to connect from MP1 to MP2 (or vice versa) so the ethernet cable is good. I can transfer files back and forth. But if I launch Safari on MP2, it won't pull down any web pages.
Strange thing: on MP1, in System Prefs > Network, ethernet 1 has a green light and shows connected (that's OK). But ethernet 2 shows a yellow light, says "self-assigned IP", and configure IPv4 is set to "Using DHCP" and the IP address is 169.254.xxx.xx. I'm suspicious that this starts with 169, since I think that means it's not working. Also if I look on MP2, its IP address is 192.168.2.xx.
Can anyone help me get internet working on MP2?

    Helpful, but still not working.
On the first Mac Pro (MP1, the one connected to the cable modem), Ethernet 1 is connected to the cable modem, and it has an IP of 192.168.2.100, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. It works perfectly.
On the first Mac Pro if I go to the Ethernet 2 tab, I'm not sure what to fill in. You said not to use DHCP? So I tried Manually, giving the IP 192.168.2.102, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and leaving router, DNS server, and search domains blank, as you suggested.
On the second Mac Pro (the "slave"), I set it to "Using DHCP" but (mysteriously) it assigns itself an IP address of 192.168.2.3. It does grab the subnet mask and router automatically. Communication between MP1 and MP2 works (I can log into one from the other), but internet does not. It's like it's partially working. I tried DHCP with manual IP, giving it the same IP (192.168.2.3) but then it says that IP is in use.
Did I do it right? On MP1, Ethernet 2, should I be configuring things manually? (I've tried DHCP too, and that doesn't work: MP1 shows an IP of 169.254.213.35 and MP2, set to DHCP, shows a different IP of 169.254.161.138.)

how do i transfer all my iphone music to a new itunes library on a new pc so i can then share it with other devices

Copy the entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods discussed here: iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer.  If you no longer have the old computer and you have to transfer it from your phone, you will have to purchase and use third-party software to extract the music from your phone, such as Touch Copy  or CopyTrans.
