IMac can't update to 10.4.8. or other updates

I need help! For some reason, my iMac G5 w/iSight won't update. When I click on Software Update under the Apple Menu, nothing comes up. I am currently running Tiger 10.4.7 and I know there's 10.4.8 and all the other updates to the iLife programs. I have to download them manually from Apple's website. But when I do try to Update programs such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc., it tells me that I cannot install the software on that specific volume because of an unknown reason. Does anyone know what I can do? I need your guys' help. Thanks.
Here's a picture of what it shows:

Hi eswank,
first try to run some system maintenance: MacOS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance.
Pay special attention to the repair permissions part: Repair permissions before and after an update!
Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC).

hey guys i have a a problem, hope you can help me.
My  24" iMac (2007) can't update to 10.7. everytime i start the download, there comes this pop up saying missing data in the package. Is my iMac too old for lion or is can the problem be the store ?
p.s. : sry for my bad english with german grammar

Yes you are fine to upgrade.
Just to mention - Lion does not run any older PowerPC apps. To find out which won't run, go to Apple Menu-> About this Mac -> Software -> Applications -> at the top of the window that opens look at the column "Kind." Your apps will either be Intel, Universal, or PowerPC. None of your PowerPC apps will run if you upgrade to Lion. You will have to buy upgraded versions, if they are available for Lion.

  • G3 imac can't update past 10.4.6 "errors found during update"

I'm issues with a slot-loading g3 imac updating past 10.4.6 (the version i installed from the dvd). the boot rom number is 4.9.f1. I tried to format after the first incident to no avail. It runs pretty good as is but I need to get Ilife 08 on it(which claims to need 10.4.10 i believe). The first go at this I ran software update, it updated everything but the 10.4.11 combined, which rendered my Itunes unusable because it needs 10.4.9 or later. I even went as far as just downloading the 10.4.7 combined update with the same outcome. Instalation on the os x update runs normal and the just stops, saying there were errors found try updating again.
    Please help!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

A G3 won't see more than 128 GB of a drive. You can put in a larger drive but the computer won't see anything beyond the first 128GB, not even if you partition. I know with G4s you can put in ATA PCI cards which will allow you to use bigger drives, and there's a utility called [SpeedTools|http://www.speedtools2.com> which is a software solution (read carefully before using as there are drawbacks vs. hardware).
A hard drive is one place where I am hesitant about buying used, especially if it is one that is the same vintage as your computer with who knows how many hours on it. I am saying this because I don't think if you buy new that you will find anything less than 7200, 8MB, 160 GB, etc. I also see people asking $30 for used 120GB drives, and you can get a new 160GB drive for not much more if you hunt around and fill out your rebate coupons.
You can get a bigger drive, use the first 128 GB with this computer, then when you get a new computer move the drive into it and use the whole thing (assuming you get a computer that supports big drives as just about any computer made in the past 4 years will do).
Personally I like Seagate drives, but you'll get all kinds of responses on this.
Since this is moving more into the hardware realm you might consider reposting the issue in the imac and/or G3 forum.
Oh, one more thing, I wouldn't necessarily kiss the drive goodbye. If you have given up on directory repair why not try reformatting it with the erase option (to do a scan for bad blocks) and see if it still has some life left in it? I am still running two 120GB drives in this computer, at least one of which is 5 years old.

I do not understand why that would be so.
This should update any version of OS X 10.6 to 10.6.8: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
After that you should have the App Store available to you, so that you can download and install Lion again.
If that does not work I guess you will have to go back to Apple and have them straighten it out.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

  • How can I update my iPod classic that will not mount on iMac computer?

I can't update my iPod classic from my iTunes on my iMac computer with OSX 10.9.  It will not mount or be recognized by iTunes version 12.1.
I plug it into the USB port and it charges, gives the "Do not disconnect" symbol but the computer does not recognize or mount the iPod at all.  I haven't been able to update the music for years. I have four other devices associated with my Apple ID for automatic downloads. Is it too antiquated to upload any of my music from my computer to it anymore?

Can not update iTunes because I have iMac with 10.5.8 . How I will sync my iphone 6.0 with an older version of iTunes on my iMac???? There is no update for the software of my iMac and no update for the iTunes.... So how can I sync????

    Requirements for iPhone 5:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 3 or later
    iTunes 10.7 or later
The highest version of iTunes you can install is 10.6.3 which will not sync with the iPhone 5.

The person I spoke with at 1-800-MY-APPLE gave me totally different info...she said the iPhone 5 would in fact sync with the older version of iTunes and that I could restore from my previous iPhone 4 backup and also bring in my music that way.  Hmmm....
I'm inclined to go by the published specs, but now I have to jump thru a bunch of hoops I wasn't expecting to.

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

Here is the link to the Mac App Store (MAS) forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_app_store/using_mac_apple_store
You might want to browse or search through that one and then create a new post there if you can't find an answer; I've heard of posts detailing problems with iLife applications if you either buy a used Mac or wipe/reinstall your OS. I'm not knowledgeable enough about that subject, but somebody there should be.

  • Can't install OS 9 on CRT iMac after firmware update

This is a bit long winded, sorry!
I bought a "working" 2001 iMac, 500MHz, slot-loader, 20 gig HD, CDRW off eBay (the CDRW didn't!) that ran in OS 9. With an external CDRW it worked well, booting the OS discs fine.
The previous owner had left his details on a supposedly deleted OS X account, so I decided to do a clean install to remove them with a supplied disc. I noticed in Utilities that a firmware update was available, 4.1.7, so used it, then did a clean OS 10 install, remembering to install the OS 9 drivers too. I bet you can guess what's coming!- yes, the OE discs wouldn't load OS 9.
Having read postings on this forum (thanks, guys!) I bought a retail version of 9.1 to use, the white/gold one with Sherlock, but this won't load either.
The main problem facing me now is that I can't update to a proper OSX without updating the firmware to 4.1.9, for which I need OS 9 installing!!! (I'd quite like OS 9 back too!)
I've reset the PRAM,and even wiped & reformatted the HD and reinstalled the 9 drivers again using the OSX disc and then powering down (you're not meant to, I know!) and still I couldn't load 9 up, trying both ways to load, just getting the "question mark on floppy" symbol.
Any help, please? Haven't tried target disc mode transfer yet, but could get another machine to do it.
Thanks for your patience with this matter, Mark Mac.

I had a similar problem once (I'll spare you the details!) and what I did in the end was this:
    1. Take the hard drive out of the iMac and put it in a FireWire enclosure.
    2. Erase it and put OS9 on it down the wire from another working Mac. You don't necessarily have to use the installer CD; you can just copy the OS9 system across from another Mac and it will work as a valid system.
    3. If you don't think it installed properly (as mine hadn't) put the installer for the firmware update into the startup items folder of the OS9 installation.
    4. Put the HDD back into the iMac and reassemble.
    5. Turn it on, whereupon it should automatically start the firmware update, running natively in OS9. Delete the firmware update installer from Startup Items.
    6. Update to 9.1 if not already, as that is the minimum for installing OSX
    7. Restart in 9.1, introduce OSX install discs and begin installation.
I know all this sounds a faff, but it worked for me and is quite logical if you think about it - not much can go wrong as long as you don't wreck the iMac while taking it to bits. One extra tip: don't install anything later than Panther on an iMac G3, because it won't be happy. And even with Panther, you might want to consider installing using XPostFacto (see versiontracker) which helps older Macs cope.
Good luck - let us know how you get on.

Bottom line, I'ev tried to install three different versions of updated ATI driver sover the last few momnths and on each and every occassion have ended up with the original Bootcamp driver. A number of current games are unplayable on a Mac running Bootcamp as a result.
And if I can't run the software I want, then Bootcamp is as useless as boobs on a bull.

    I have iMac version 10.7.5 can i update to Mavericks 10.9.2 ?

Your MBP qualifies for the upgrade to OS X Mavericks.
It would be very prudent and highly advisable that you create a viable backup of your entire system and all your important data before embarking on a major systems upgrade.
Backup your entire system using an externally connected hard drive using a data cloning app such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to create an identical and bootable  copy (clone) of your entire Mac's system to an external hard drive.
This needs to be done in the event something unforeseen goes bad with the install or you simply do not like the new OS.
Failure to backup means a much more tedious, longer and arduous task and process to restore your Mac to its previous system and health if you decide there are too many issues that may or may not occur during the install or during general operation.
    Good Luck!
