IMac cannot erase partition in recovery mode

Hi,
I bought an iMac Retina 5K in Dec. 2014. I am using OS X 10.10.1, 3T fusion drive. Now I want to erase and re-install OS X. However, when I enter the recovery mode, the os does not let me erase the partition. After first attempt of erase, all the selection and button became gray and un-selectable.
I want do know if it is normal that I cannot erase for the new model. How can I erase and re-install, or restore to factory state.
Thank you so much!

I just returned a new iMac with a fusion drive after one week (many power related problems) - I also had a problem erasing, but finally managed by choosing the actual drive, not the top most entry in the Disk Utility window. I no longer have it now to do a screenshot, but I am referring to the actual hard drive like this one:
As to not being able to choose the top entry - I believe this is the behavior because of the fusion drive/SSD which you have no control over.

  • IMac will not boot in recovery mode

I have tried to boot into recovery mode (CMD-R) in Mavericks.  I tried with my hard drive and a Mac Install disk.  Disk utility has grayed out the erase option except for unused space. Can't partition either. I am attempting to donate to my church.  They will use their Apple ID to load their current OSX. Help

If you still have the Install OS X Mavericks.app file from the App Store or can download it again, you can recreate your Mavericks Recovery HD using the Recovery Partition Creator 3.7 utility and the Install OS X Mavericks.app.

  • I cannot open itunes in recovery mode

i need to restore my iphone because it has been disabled for i have forgotten the passcode. it says connect to iTunes so i connect to iTunes, but while on recovery mode i cannot open iTunes it hanged. please i badly need your help..

One reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
Otherwise, you will either need to enter the recovery key (if you saved one) or erase the volume and restore from a backup.

  • How to unlock logical Partition in recovery mode?

I have problems with my iMac (2007) after installing 10.7.2. It's not starting any more. Now, in recovery mode in Disk Utility I've clicked on Turn Off Ecryption..., because my disk is encrypted with FileVaul2. The probelm is, it's showing now as Locked and I don't find any way how to unlock it. How can I unlock it again? Thanks.

  • CANNOT restore, CANNOT get out of recovery mode (ERROR 3194)

I was trying to update my 3GS to the latest IOS version and it went into recovery mode. I try and restore it and error pop up appears saying that I cannot restore due to ERROR 3194.
I've tried the SYSTEM32 trick, I've installed the new iTunes, I DIDNT JAILBREAK, I've tried taking my anti-virus offline while I restore. NOTHING works. I consider myself pretty smart with computers, but I'm getting desperate now as you can see.
If this happend to you, last resort what would you do if you could never get it out? Get a new phone? Is there a way I could get one for this? I just want to listen to music and text again.
    Thank you for your time

Make certain that iTunes is really the current iTunes. If that is correct, I would restore my iPhone on a different computer which has the current iTunes installed.

  • ITunes cannot restore iPod in recovery mode.

I connect the iPod, and iTunes recognizes instantly, and tells me that it has detected the iPod in recovery mode etc. Then I click Restore and it normally extracts restoring software, and then a window appears that it cannot sync.
    http://www.geocities.com/jjcalzada2009/Picture2.jpg

    open iTunes
-plug the iPod into the computer
-hold both sleep/wake and home button until iPod restarts.
-let go of of the sleep/wake button when you see Apple logo.
-continue to hold home button until iTunes pops up with recovery mode
-click yes, and your iPod will be restored to its factory settings.

  • Cannot see OS X partition in Recovery mode

Randomly my Boot Camped MacBook Pro wouldn't boot into OS X. I see the Apple logo and it stays there indeffinatly. I tried repairing in the Disk Utility in the Recovey partition and that didn't help. I took my MacBook in to the Apple store and the tech there ran some command line utilites and made sure that the HD was physically okay, and it was. He suggested I boot into the Recovery partition and reinstall Lion from there as it would retain all my programs and files. When I first did this, the OS X partition showed as locked. Now I can't even see the partition. However if I boot into windows I can see all the files so I know the partition is still there. Any ideas short of reinstalling completely?

    Done that before... nope
It just isn't there as if its not installed

  • Cannot erase/partition Fusion drive

    Hi everyone,
When I got my iMac, with a 1TB Fusion drive, I partitioned it, with a small partition running OS X and apps, and another larger one, to contain my user files - photos, documents and so on.
Now I want to sell my iMac, and I want to re-partition my Fusion drive, to only one partition, like when I bought it. But it cannot be done. Se screenshot bellow. Everything is greyed out.
I have tried to boot into reinstall mode, via CMD-R, with no luck.
I have tried running OS X from another USB drive, no luck.
And the one partition listed in the screenshot, won't mount. Have I messed up completely?
    Best regards
    Soeren Vedel

Boot into your Recovery HD using Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R). You should see a spinning globe and it should take a few minutes to get to the OS X Utilities menu. This boots into Apple's server.
Open Terminal and type: diskutil cs list
Copy the Logical Volume Group UUID which is a string of letters/numbers/dashes. This should be the 1st line after the above command.
Type: diskutil cs delete <LVG UUID from the previous step> (without the brackets)
After the delete completes open Disk Utility and you may see your two drive (SSD, HDD) in RED. You will be prompted to IGNORE or FIX. Choose FIX to recreate your Fusion Drive.
Close DU and select Reinstall OS X from the menu list. After the reinstall completes Shutdown. Your Mac is now setup to factory OS.

  • Windows does not start and cannot get into safe recovery mode

Had a blue screen and when I start up Windows wants to run in safe mode. But this runs for a few seconds and then stops with a blank screen (have left this for over 2 hours).
If I select to start windows normally then the system just reboots to the windows repair screen.
I do not have a recovery disk as Windows vista was pre-installed. Any clues ?

    Hi,
The possible reason is that Windows bootmanager or the system files are corrupted. You say that you haven't made a recovery disk, but what about Hdd image recovery (pressing F8 on startup)? If it's already removed, you have to:
    1. Order the recovery disk https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx Note, it's not free
2 Get a copy of Windows vista and install it. Then, download the all necessary drivers and enjoy it.

  • HOW DO I GET OUT OF RECOVERY MODE?

Simple question, but seems to be hard to answer. Maybe nobody knows the answer. i have posted and posted time after time and no body gives me an answer. Go to clean up. ok been and done that. nothing happens. run pc scandisk. did it. nothing happened. connect to pc. did it. it does connect. i can get stuff off my nomad muvo 2 but for some reason
I CANNOT GET OUT OF RECOVERY MODE.
Could someone, anyone, give me a fricking straight on how to get the **bleep** out of RECOVERY MODE. I didn't spend $70 dollars on this piece of crap for it to not work.
So for the love that is all good and pure in the world, could someone please, please, getting on knees and begging for someone to help? And do not, and i repeat DO NOT REFER ME TO THE FRICKING RECOVERY MODE HELP THING, BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HELP. SO DON'T BOTHER TYPING THAT IN.

I have a Zen Micro Photo and have been frustrated for many weeks. Sometimes a certain sequence is the key to success. I tried everything to no avail. I could not even get the Zen to charge with my Computer or wall outlet. I was stuck in Recovery Mode Hell. Of course, my battery drained and you must have a charge to upgrade the Firmware or do anything else. I even ordered a new battery on eBay. In the meantime, I purchased a **competitor** MP3 player which is the absolute best I have ever seen. Anyway, I read the Post here suggesting you try a certain sequence---which I then tried---and it worked for me. Somehow, I was able to get a charge from my PC last night. Without being hooked up to the PC I did the sequence (it would get locked up in Recovery Mode as soon as I hooked up to the PC anyway). My PC would simply refuse to recognize the Zen Micro Photo no matter what I did. As suggested, from Recovery Mode I clicked on "reformat", and when it was done I clicked on "reboot"--which it did. I then plugged in the USB cable and to my extreme surprise my PC recognized the player! I had downloaded the correct firmware file so I clicked on it. It opened and asked me if I really wanted to install this Firmware update as my player already had this Firmware installed. Really? I did a Format and I thought I erased the Firmware. I told setup to upgrade the Firmware anyway--which it did. Suddenly, my player started "reloading" its Library! I now have a working Zen Micro Photo (and a new **competitor**). I transferred a few MP3's to the Zen and they play just fine. I am serious when I say I tried everything-----over and over again. The player just remained locked in Recovery mode. It was this certain sequence that worked for me and possibly may work for you. This was my last attempt before the trash bin. Prices have fallen drastically for MP3 players and quality has improved (**competitor**), but I am happy that I now have two working MP3 players. One of them is going on eBay---any guess which one?

Hi I had perches one iphone4 from Hong Kong last month but after coming back i try to restore my iphone but it's give error 3194 then i try to restore it in recovery mode but still can not restore error -1 and now i cannot get out of recovery mode please help me to shovel this problem.

Are you running modified software on your phone?  This error seems to be common if the firmware has been modified and you're trying to restore the phone again.

  • I can't get my iPhone 5 out of Recovery mode, help?!

I plugged my phone into my macbook pro and Itunes asked me to update the phone's software, and now I cannot get out of recovery mode. Does this mean I have to restore my phone?

Yes.  You need to restore the phone.  If you connected the phone to your computer, it should be backed up in iTunes.  Possibly iCloud as well.
