IMac cannot locate airport extreme

I have lost my internet connection because my iMac suddently fails to locate the airport extreme, but if I run Windows 7 under Parallel on the same iMac, I can connect to the internet. I think I have messed up some of the files. I will appreciate any help. Thanks.

First I'd unplug the AirPort Extreme for 15 minutes to see if that helps.  If not, try a "factory default reset" of the Extreme.

  • IMac cannot locate airport express

I've read other threads with similar problems but can't find this specific issue.
Overnight my iMac (2.8ghz intel core i7, os 10.6.8) stopped finding my wifi network. Last night fine, this morning nothing. Rescanning with Airport Utility results in "unable to detect any airport wireless devices..." My iPad and iPod and Roku all connect fine, and the Airport has green light.
I connected the Airport to the iMac with Ethernet, and it still did not recognize the Airport.
I'm at a loss. I don't see a need to reset the Airport since it is working with my other devices. Did my iMac's wifi ability just die overnight

At this point, I would suggest that you perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX). This would get the AX back to its out-of-the-box configuration.
You may need to perform this a couple of time to make sure it "sticks." After the resets, you should be able to access from the AirPort Utility to configure it as required.

  • Macbook cannot find airport extreme to configure it

macbook pro cannot find airport extreme to configure it to join an existing network.

By default, the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) will be broadcasting a wireless network with a name like, Apple Network NNNNNN. Be sure that the MBP is connected to this wireless network BEFORE trying to access with the AirPort Utility.
If this still doesn't work, try temporarily connecting the AX directly to the MBP by Ethernet, and then, try accessing it with the AirPort Utility.

  • AL iMac Crashes Gigabit Airport Extreme

I purchased the 24" 2.4Ghz aluminim iMac and the latest gigabit Airport Extreme N, a few weeks back. I was already using the previous non-gigabit Aiport Extreme N with a macbook, macbook pro, apple tv, tivo, and xbox 360 with no problems.
After getting the iMac up and running however, my Airport Extreme started crashing every few hours. I replaced it with the new gigabit Airport Extreme but the crashes continued. If I turn the iMac off completely, everything works fine. However, with the iMac on, the Airport Extreme will crash a few times a day. By crash I mean that all devices lose their connection to the Airport and the network is no longer visible to any of the devices. I have to powercycle (unplug) the Airport Extreme and then all devices can connect to the network again - until the next crash.
I've seen that others have problems with the connection being dropped - but is anyone having issues with the Airport Extreme crashing altogether?

I should also note that the iMac and Airport Extreme are not very close to each other. They are abut 25 feet apart in different rooms.

  • I cannot get airport extreme to work. Can you help me?

I have a G5 Power PC. I recently purchased a macbook and an Airport Extreme. I cannot get the airport to work. Can somebody help me please??
G5 Power PC and macbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   new OS X on Macbook

I plug the ethernet from the airport to the back of the modem (a Webstar unit) from my cable provider. Then I plug the other cable from the back of the airport into my G5. Then plug in the power cord. I get lots of flashing lights - "thinkin & blinkin", but then I get a message that it cannot locate the server. Even rebooted. I've been waiting for the IT guy to call/email me back me back but no response yet. I'm guessing I may just need a new location, but I'm not wired to think IT-like (I'm a very right brained graphic designer), I I don't want to screw anything up.
Do I need to just go through a new internet setup?

  • Connecting "older" pc and new iMac desktop via Airport extreme

Please bear with me...I am a Mac novice. My husband and I just purchased our first mac (iMac 20" desktop)and had it up and running in 2 minutes. We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth (whose signal it is remains a mystery). We purchased the airport extreme to access the internet via our Dell's 2 y/o cable modem (comcast Motorola Surfboard)before we realized we had a hotspot in our house. We also want to use the printer that is connected to our pc with our mac. I cannot get the airport configured at all...I keep getting error messages. The first one that appears says that my wireless interface is not enabled. I went to My Network Places and set up the wirless network using a USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one appeared in the list of devices detected when I reconnected the flashdrive to my pc. I've tried rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both the modem and the aiport from the power supply. Should I reset the airport? Help!!

We got internet access immediately through the bluetooth
(whose signal it is remains a mystery).
This is very likely to be a neighbour's wireless or Airport network (not Bluetooth).
    I cannot get the
airport configured at all...I keep getting error
    messages.
Don't use the PC to configure the Airport Extreme Base Station, use the iMac, it will be easier.
The first one that appears says that my
    wireless interface is not enabled.
You are probably trying to use the Airport Assistant, this will only work on a wireless computer, in order to configure an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) from a wired PC, you need to connect to the AEBS via the LAN port and then use the Airport Admin Utility.
Connecting a XP PC to a Airport Network via the LAN port of the AEBS

However still configure the AEBS via the iMac.
    I went to My
Network Places and set up the wirless network using a
USB flash drive. I connected it to the airport's
USB connection, and then to my iMac. Neither one
appeared in the list of devices detected when I
reconnected the flashdrive to my pc.
That Microsoft wireless process only works with other Windows PCs, it won't work with a Mac or the AEBS.
    I've tried
rebooting, disconnecting and then reconnecting both
the modem and the aiport from the power supply.
Try using the Mac to configure the Airport network using the Assistant.
    Should I reset the airport?
You may need to, but sounds like you haven't managed to configure it, so it will still be in the default state.
We also want to use the printer that is
connected to our pc with our mac.

  • Cannot install Airport Extreme software on my HD

I bought an Airport Extreme unit from someone who had it for quite some time but never used it--opened the software and tried to install on my iMac G5 HD.
It will go no further than the destination volume--when I tried to install I got this message:
You cannot install Airport on this volume.
This update requires Mac OS X v10.1 before this software can be installed..
So I tried installing all the listed updates and still no luck. Any suggestions?
How am I supposed to go backwards to install old software versions just to update to current status?
I would greatly appreciate the help!.....

    Duane..
Gosh, that is good news! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question and help me..I DO appreciate it!

USB Backup drive connected to USB port on Airport Extreme. Running system 10.5.5
On my Macbook Pro, which I connect wirelessly, I was able to start Time Machine... Time Machine saw the backup drive and did a backup.. Yes it took a long time!! Anyway all is cool with that.
My iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme by Ethernet. On the iMac when I started Time Machine, it does not see the backup hard drive. I can see and share the hard drive... works fine. But no luck with TM seeing the hard drive on the iMac.
Questions is will Time Machine work with a computer that is connected to airport extreme by ethernet. If yes how o you set it up and what might be wrong??
yes, it should work. hard to say what's wrong. try the following terminal command. it should not be necessary but it should help.
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
One other important thing to mention. At first I plugged my new backup hard drive directly into the iMac with firewire 800. I started time machine and started the backup. I then stopped that backup and plugged the backup hard drive into the Airport extreme (USB port) I then trashed the partial backup folder off the backup hard drive. Is it possible that on the iMac there is still some TM file there pointing to the old original backup file??
have you emptied trash? you should. the files won't really be deleted till you do. there is one other hidden file but it should not be necessary to remove it.
    Thanks.... any help is appreciated.

  • Powerbook cannot detect Airport Extreme base station

I bought a new Airport extreme and cannot connect to it wirelessly. I called and tried to do everything to fix the problem but ended up having to have a replacement Airport sent to me. The new one arrives and same problem. I can see other wireless networks but cannot see the one from mine. When restarting the base station, I see my network for a second but it goes away and I can't connect to it. I'm thinking it might be my computer but I can see other networks... any suggestions on how to rectify the problem?

Ok, thanks. I can only see, at this time, five choices:
Try each step one-at-a-time, until successful. After each step, try accessing the AEBSn via Ethernet.
o Shut down the AirPort Utility, and then, restart it.
o Unplug the AEBSn, wait at least 5 minutes, and then plug it back in.
o Reinstall the AirPort Utility on your PC to rule out any issues with the initial installation.
o Install the AirPort Utility on another device (PC or Mac) to see if it can access the base station.
o Perform a "hard" reset of the AEBS.

  • Cannot configure Airport Extreme ...

    Hi,
I have purchased a Mac Mini together with an Airport Extreme (AE). I am still using a wireless router from D-Link and want to switch to the AE. It was possible to configure everything very easily with D-Link by using a browser and the IP http://192.168.0.1.
Q1: Is there such an IP for AE? (This seems to be kind of standard with other brands!)
Towards Internet I have to simulate a specific MAC (hardware) address. Otherwise I don't get an IP from my Internet provider. I found nowhere in the AE Utility where I could set that value.
Q2: Is it possible for AE to simulate another MAC address than its own? How? (This also seems to be a standard with all other brands, so I hope Apple supports this feature!)
Somehow I cannot get the wireless functionality of AE to work. My WinNT Dell notebook cannot find the wireless network that is established by AE.
Q3: Is this problem because AE has not access to the Internet yet due to my Q2 question?
I have my Apple products since 2 days now. Isn't it possible to talk to an Apple technician on the phone? I tried it today (sunday) but no one was available. Maybe it's because of the sunday but there was no information regarding that on Apple's support page!
    Thanks

global_escape, welcome to the user to user discussions!
"Q1: Is there such an IP for AE? (This seems to be kind of standard with other brands!)"
No, the Airport Extreme is configured using AirPort Utility.
"Q2: Is it possible for AE to simulate another MAC address than its own?"
    No.
"Q3: Is this problem because AE has not access to the Internet yet due to my Q2 question?"
No, AE does not need to be hooked up to the Internet to create a wireless network.
"Somehow I cannot get the wireless functionality of AE to work. My WinNT Dell notebook cannot find the wireless network that is established by AE."
Have you used AirPort Utility to "create a wireless network" for the AE? If you have already done this, check your settings. They would normally look something like this:
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name: The name of your wireless network
    Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Wireless Password: Your password
    Confirm Password: Your password
Please post back on your progress.

  • Airport Utility cannot see Airport Extreme Device even though connected to wireless network

I'm trying to set up a Macbook Air for my wife. I have a home network of four Airport Extremes that were configured in bridge mode with an authenticated SSID and one that is open for guests. On my PC my airport Utility sees all of the base stations and can configure them fine. On the Macbook air the utility cannot see any of the base stations no matter how many times I scan. The strange thing is that it can see both wireless networks. A fact that may be related to the problem is that the Macbook Air cannot authenticate into the secured SSID. The password is correct. Other machines (PC/Mac) all have no problem. Apple TV 2's, iPad's, and iPhone's all have no problem. I'm stumped.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

As usual in recent years, Apple creates and ships a problem (latest MacBook Air + Airport Extreme N + Airport Utility 6.1), and when multiple users encounter the problem, and post about it, nary an Apple supoort person to take ownership, so threads just die, like this one did. I'm having the same problem, and as a committed Apple customer, I just want to find any oither company to do business with.
(I'm sure connecting by wired Ethernet would work, but THE AIR DOESN'T HAVE AN ETHERNET JACK!!)
Love this community. Have had it with Apple.
    Sincerely,

  • Airplay icon missing on iMac after installing airport extreme

Can't get my iMac to display the airplay icon after changing to the AirPort Extreme wireless router.
    Previous Setup:
Cable Modem ->LinkSys Wireless Router -> AirPort Express for Home Stereo access using Airplay
Accessed Airplay from iPhone 5S, iPad, iMac - all worked
    NEW Setup:
Replaced old wireless router with Airport Extreme
Cable Modem -> Airport Extreme -> Airport Express for Airplay on home speaker system
Airport Utility (v 6.3.2) see's both the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express
The Airport Express is in Network Mode of :Join a wireless network.  My AirPort Extreme wifi network is Why Phi
    The Airplay option is selected
My iMac does not see the airplay option in the menu bar.
Note:  The Airplay icon used to show up on my iMac before I had the AirPort Extreme.
My iPhone 5s see's the AirPort Express for airplay, and plays the music fine.
The display for my iMac is flagged to show for AirPlay but it doesn't see any devices.
If you know what I have missed, please let me know!  I loved the AirPlay option from my iMac, and would really like to get it back!

The AirPlay icon within iTunes appears when iTunes "discovers" that an active AirPlay-ready "speaker" is available on the network. In this case the speaker would be your AirPort Express base station.
It may be possible that the Express has not properly joined the Wi-Fi network provided by the new Extreme base station.
Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • Windows XP cannot see Airport Extreme SSID

I just bought a new Airport Extreme Base Station and connected it to my home router. My iMc was connected in minutes. But I am having a lot of trouble connecting my wife's Dell PC (XP SP2) using a Dell 1450 Wireless USB adapter (a/b/g). I have tried no encryption, WEP, and WPA, but in all cases I cannot even see the broadcasted SSID from the base station. I have also tried a number of different channels 1,6,8,11, but in all cases I never see the station in the list of available wireless networks.
To see if this was a windows issue, I brought home my work laptop (also XP SP2), and it had no problem seeing the SSID, and also connecting in all the above cases. Whats even more perplexing is that all the computers are right next to each other, and my wife's computer can see about 10 of meighbor's access points, but not the new base station!
Needless to say, it has been very frustrating, and I am considering returning the airport if I can't get the wife's XP connected.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark

I can see a couple of possibilities.
    * It is possible to set up AirPort (or any wireless network) so that the SSID doesn't show up - ever. In such cases, it's necessary to manually type in the SSID to connect. (Usually, it's only the first time - most devices can remember the SSID name, and it's not a problem). Unfortunately for you, I don't use Wintendo that much, and don't have the steps needed to connect to a hidden network memorized - I'm actually more familiar with the process to do it with an Xbox than I am with a Windows PC.
    * To see if this is the case, use the AirPort utility, manual config. Find the "Wireless" tab, and then choose "wireless options" There should be a checkbox named "create a closed network" If it is checked, then the SSID is in fact hidden, and that's why you aren't finding the SSID.
I realize that you were able to see the SSID from another machine, and that is puzzling that your wife's PC can't see it.
You've already eliminated the possibility that the radio is simply turned off on your wife's PC, as you can see your neighbor's wireless SSID(s).
I'd suggest trying a different encryption, as some older devices can't use the newer methods - but you've covered that base too.
To be honest, I've got a couple of issues of my own with the 802.11n base station... the latest firmware 'update' seems to have been a step backwards...

  • CANNOT ACCESS AIRPORT EXTREME after reload opsys

I'm using macbook 10.4.10 and my safari browser started blowing out whenever I tried to watch a YouTube video. As soon as my mouse would touch any link, the browser shut down. I reloaded my 2 original operating discs, but now my airport extreme is greyed out. When I try to click on my network to access it, I am unable to. I reloaded my airport disc, but nothing has changed.
(I am writing this from my DH's computer because I cannot access the internet.)

I've tried to install the Airport Enabler .pkg and "errors" shut it down.
I can find my network listed, but the bottom right button is greyed out, even after I enter my password.
I opened ::something:: in System Preferences to be sure "Automatic" was selected (it was) and I've also tried entering "11" in this area, no go. There seems to be a password problem, while in this area, I turned on "view password" and there was a string of random characters a mile long.
I thought MAC computers couldn't be hacked?
How can I resolve a password problem when the WPA wireless security (and ALL securities) have "OK" greyed out?
Why would reloading my original operating system discs cause my wifi to change?
Who would I phone to resolve this lack of internet access problem???
