IMac cannot read new disc

I recently bought software from the Apple store. When I insert the installation disc, my disc drive immediately ejects it. I thought maybe it was the disc itself, so I tried it on my Macbook Pro. It worked perfectly fine. How can I correct this problem?

This may sound simplistic but, if the disk is not visible, have you checked Finder preferences to check what items you want visible on the desktop?
Spaces also takes some getting used to and I found I could not empty trash because the warning window was sometimes showing up in a different space to the one from I was in when trying to delete the trash.  The warning was not visible even when I made visible all 6 spaces screens. Only when opening each space at a time did I find the trash warning window where I could confirm the instruction to empty the trash.
I give the above example because something similar happened when I was searching for and trying to eject a Diskwarrior DVD.  The computer wanted me to confirm eject instruction because in the case of DW, it wanted to know if I wanted to eject all 3 partitions, and only when I confirmed ok was the disk finally ejected.
Good luck.

  • Cannot read new on-screen text

My 84 year old mother with poor eyesight cannot read the on-screen text since the upgrade was pushed out. She views either a 55 inch HD TV in her living room from a lounge chair or a 20 inch SD TV from her bed in her bedroom. It is not feasible to move the chair or bed closer to the TV. It is not easy for her to get up and stand close to the TV every time she needs to go through the menu to watch a DVR recording. Even standing right in front of the TV, it is almost impossible to read the white text on the light blue background (due to the poor contrast). She had no problem reading the white text on a black background before the upgrade.
I experimented with the FiOS settings for SD vs HD and 480 vs 1080 but nothing helps.
I noticed that the closed captions settings allows you to change the font text color and font background color. FiOS should provide those options for the on-screen text too.
I would have expected that there would be mass outrage and complaints about the new poor contrast of on screen text due to the light blue background but the posted complaints appear to be few. I suspect it is because the customers who are the most impacted by this terrible change are not able to post complaints about it (because they are older people who are not computer literate or their eyesight issues make working with computers difficult).
I encourage everybody who wants the text background changed to black or an option added to give a choice of a black background to keep posting complaints (whether it impacts you personally or if you are sympathetic to those with eyesight disabilities). Please keep in mind, that even though your eyesight is good today, as you get older, it is likely your eyesight will also start to fail and you will appreciate easy to read text.

We agree, we are in much younger generation, and Verizon Fios Tv viewing Options are just far too limited and not up to par in this area!

  • Compiling message "cannot read" (new to java)

Sorry about yet another question on compiling. I'm new to java. I've read alot of the threads on this, but my HelloJava.java won't compile.
I'm working on w2k. I've set my path to
    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;c:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin
using the environment variables in the system properties box.
    This seems to work fine.
but I keep getting the "cannot read" when compiling.
I've created a classpath variable in the environment variables
    CLASSPATH = .;C:\src
and my java file is definately .java not .java.txt and it's in the src folder on my c drive.
Do I need to set classpath? Also I've put my HelloJava.java file in the same folder as my javac and it still won't compile. What am I doing wrong?
By the way, the HelloJava file came from the book "Learning Java".
    thanks in advance.

    OK -
If you place your .java files in C:\src, to compile you must either
    1. Go to (change the current directory to, using cd command) c:\src and then enter "javac ...."
    or
2 From any directory enter "javac C:\src\...."
Classpath is used by javac and java, but not in this way.
Read here for the full story:
The Path is a set of pointers that Windows uses to locate programs that you execute, like javac.exe and java.exe. This setting is explained here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/install-windows.html
Scroll down to: 5. Update the PATH variable
The CLASSPATH is another set of pointers that is used by Java to find the files that you create and want compiled and/or run. This setting is explained here:
    Setting the Classpath:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/tooldocs/windows/classpath.html
[NOTE: always start your classpath with ".;" which means the current directory. See my classpath, below]

  • IMac cannot read the DVD

I burned a DVD from Finder. Than the system was not able to read it. I tried with an other disc but the result was the same, It is a Memorex DVD-R.
thank you in advance for any suggestion.

No, unfortunately I can't, because this is my only computer with CD/DVD reader. I wanted to keep files as backup. But even if it would work in PC I would expect that the iMAC can read it's own "product".

  • Imac cannot read music cd's

After upgrading to itunes 5 I could no longer load music cd's. Any music cd would get a message that it was not readable.
I can load photo discs, data discs, dvd's, and I can burn a blank disc successfully but as soon as it is done the computer cannot recognize it.
I have now upgraded to itunes 6 but I still have the problem.

I have the exact same problem: on inserting an audio CD, I get "This disk is not readable. [Ignore] [Eject]". Just clarifying, this isn't a problem with iTunes (though the install may have caused the problem); this is OS X spurning audio CDs.
    Some further troubleshooting:
    - It's definitely not a problem with the drive: the problem started simultaneously on both my desktop and laptop (I keep their harddrives sync'd). Plus, as John reports, I can read any data CD, and can burn audio CDs.
    - I tried mounting the CD through Disk Utility, but still no luck.
    - This is all audio CDs I tried, new and old.
    - For me it started around the time I installed iTunes 6; I'd had no problems with the previous version (which I presume was version 5).
    - I do have all the other latest system updates.

  • Equium M50 cannot read recovery disc

I have a fairly old Toshiba Equium M50 - 164. I have lost some setup files etc and wish to rest to factory settings.
I have the recovery disc, however, the drive doesn't read it. I have tried other discs and they won't read either.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

    >Can I copy stuff from the disc onto a flash drive and load that?
    This will not work.
I recommend you to buy new drive. You can also buy used one on eBay. It is not expensive and you can exchange it alone.

  • IMac cannot read any DVD drives - internal or external

    Hi,
My iMac began exhibiting problems about 12 months ago when it wouldn't load CD's properly to iTunes - it would do some songs and not others. It also stopped reading an external drive I bought. I bought another external DVD drive from an apple store - no luck. This iMac of mine refuses to deal with any external media.
Has anyone had the same problem - can anyone help.
I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard BTW - won't read the media
    Thanks and regards,
    Jon

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions...
From your Finder menu bar click Finder / Preferences then select the General tab.
Make sure: *External disks* is selected.
If that box was already, checked try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

    Hi nnevado,
Since the software disk can be read in your Macbook Pro it sounds like the problem may be the optical drive. I once had a problem like that and the drive had to be replaced. A couple of things to try so we can be sure: do any other disks get ejected immediately or is it just that software disk? Also, besides checking that disk in your Macbook Pro like you did, are there any other Macs around that you can try it on? The results of those tests should help to pinpoint the problem.

  • IMac cannot read the flash drive

It is really frustrating, I've tried many times on my iMac air and it just could not read my flash drive.
My other usb can work just fine, just one specific usb won't work.
However, when I plug it into my window's computer, it works!
For some reason I have to use that usb on my iMac, the window's computer belongs to uni, has limit.
Should I just go to apple store and ask for help?
Now I regret that I bought iMac.

Yeah I should have made myself claer, it is not only this time.
I've experienced so many problems when I try to run other applications on my iMac, undoubtedly iMac is handy, but most of the applications are only available on windows.
    Thanks for your reply.

  • CD/ DVD Drive is not reading any discs! - HP Pavillion DV6747TX

Hi there, I have a problem. My CD/ DVD Drive is not reading any discs! I have no idea what's happened..it was going fine and then all of the sudden it stopped working.
The computer I have is a HP Pavillion DV6700 or DV6747TX to be exact and the CD/DVD-Rom drive is a TSSTcgrp CDDVDW TS%L632N ATA Device. It seems to be present in the Device Manager and in the Computer Menu. When I put a CD or DVD into the disc drive lights are blinking and it sounds like it's trying to load or do something, but nothing is coming up. CD Drive E still says CD Drive E instead of reading the disc that's in there and when I click on Drive E it says Windows cannot read the disc in drive E.
I have tried searching the net for answers including the suggestions on this website and have tried a few other ideas I have come across but nothing seems to be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is usually  a known software conflict and happens across the board will all computer manufacturers due to a issue with multiple media burning/ripping applications being installed on your system.
You can either run this file, go online to Microsoft's site for a fix, or manually fix it by following the instructions below:
    Manually delete the registry entries
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Note Before you use this method, uninstall all CD or DVD writing or recording programs. Deleting the corrupted registry entries might cause problems with any other CD or DVD writing or recording programs that are installed on your computer. Uninstalling these programs before you start will help you avoid any problems that removing the registry entries might cause. You can reinstall these programs after the problem is resolved.
This method provides step-by-step instructions for how to use Registry Editor to delete the following corrupted Registry entries:
    UpperFilters
    LowerFilters
Step 1: Start Registry EditorStart Registry Editor
Start Registry Editor...type "regedit" into the run box on the start menu.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
Expand Control, and then expand Class.
    Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.
Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value?
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.
Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.
If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes when you receive the following message:Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
    Exit Registry Editor.
    Step 4: Restart your computer
Restart your computer. After you have done this, try to access the CD or DVD drive. If you can access the CD or DVD drive, and if you do not receive an error message, the problem is resolved. You can reinstall your CD or DVD writing or recording software.

  • Cannot read CD-Rs but can read DVDs

    I cant understand this...
Regardless or not if a CD-R is factory burned, burned by myself (in the past)or is unburned - my computer cannot read the disc and spits it out. Any kind of DVD I put in there it reads fine. I am running 10.5.4. The funny thing is, they did work... after i initially installed the system i used some of the CDs to install apps. Any thoughts?
PS: The CD work fine on my other machines and none of them are scratched.
This is what my system has to say about the factory drive:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
    Firmware Revision: ZA0E
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

I have been reading these forums for a while. I have the exact same computer drive and firmware on my MBP. I read that the issue is the drive (however this was last year and can't source the info, but I did a lot of research on the subject, just never acted on it). The MBP I have also had a bad battery as well, and Apple replaced it because they admitted that a large series of MBPs were installed with this bad battery, just like Apple put in a bad drive. If your computer is still under warranty, I would take it to Apple's Genius Bar and they can run check to see if it falls under Apples' "recall" computers and they should replace it. They did that for my battery.
However I never did the drive because I assumed they would have to hold my computer to do it and I couldn't give it up since it was my computer I used to work on my MBA.

  • Hello, I have a 2009 iMac, and my harddrive has failed several times now, and now I need to re-install snow leopard but my install DVD is damaged and I have bought a new snow leopard disc. However my iMac will not read the disc at all ?

Hello, I have a 2009 iMac, and my harddrive has failed several times now.
I tired to reinstall snow leopard with the install DVD that came with my iMac. However the disc is damaged so I bought a new Snow Leopard but my iMac wont read the new disc, it just stays in the apple logo screen, I have tired safe boot, holding down the "C" key on startup and tried using disc utility but getting nowhere.
    Please help. Thanks.

Might be related, if your hard drive is a 1TB drive,it could be a Seagate drive.
The drives are known to fail and your iMac maybe covered for free replacement under the Apple's Seagate hard drive replacement program until April 12 of this year.
I Believe the 2009 models are covered under this replacement warranty.
You can find out if you are eligible here.

    Good Luck!

  • MacBook cannot read Snow Leopard disc

I've got a strange problem. I bought a Snow Leopard upgrade disc. I installed the new OS without any problems on my iMac.
Now, I cannot do it on my 15" MacBook Pro. When I try to insert the disc, the drive tries to read it for a little while, then spits it right out. It keeps doing it. After many attempts, I did eventually get it to read it once. The installer loaded, and began doing its thing. A short time later, when I came back to my MacBook, it had reset and still showed the original version of the OS. I assume it must have crashed during the install. Now I can't get it to read the disc again.
The disc itself is fine. It's not dirty. As I said, I installed it on my iMac.
I did read about similar trouble on another forum. People had replaced their discs but that didn't help. Anyone here have any ideas? I've had no trouble reading other DVD's in this drive, by the way. And I don't have any weird applications loaded, other than Norton Antivirus.

Yes, you can clone the installer disc to an external hard drive or flash drive (minimum 8 GBs) and boot from that.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external or flash drive.
    Source means the DVD.
Be sure your destination drive is partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
You can also install from another computer if you can connect the two by FireWire. See Installing Tiger without a DVD drive. The article applies to Tiger but will work with Leo or Snow.
