Imac cannot recognize ext hard disk

I got my new imac (duo core) because I have been using my tiny ibook for graphic design & was just so happy to have a faster & bigger screen mac. But all my heavy files are in my 300Gb external hard disk which was working very well with my ibook. I'm stalled now cos I can get my huge files to my imac. I tried checking disk utility, still nothing in there????
Why can't it recognize??? HELP, Please advise!

Joyup, Welcome to the discussion area!
BTW, this is the discussion area for the iMac G4. Since you have an Intel iMac you will want to post future questions in the Intel iMac discussion area.

  • My iMac cannot detect the Hard Disk

    Hi, i've got a question...
Something is wrong with my new iMac. Somedays (only somedays) my iMac cannot detect the hard disk, so when I startup it stops on the initial screen (whit a gray "apple" and background). I tryed to startup it with OSX system discs but the installation app and disk utility don't detect any Hard Disk.
At an authorized store have said to me that can be a software problem...
Is that true? I thought that was a hardware problem.
    Thanx,
    Eneko

Given the young age of you machine I believe you should be taking Apple to task on this one. I'd advise you back-up your data to multiple locations before you go any further.

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
Then boot from that on your computer and install
You need an internet connection to install via Recovery mode

  • When I reboot my iMac I'll get hard disk selection instead of fast login and I am not using boot camp! Any help is greatly appriciated!

Have you selected which disk you want to boot from? In System Preferences, click startup disk and choose the drive you want as your default boot drive.

  • Upgrade won't recognize the hard disk to begin the installation

Powerbook G4 w/ 9.2.2 & the original CD for OS X 10.1 - thought I'd get it on and upgrade from there since I know I'll need to buy more RAM - existing is 385 & I only have 10 G on the system. I downloaded several updates, ran the security update first. The 10.1.1 update won't recognize the hard disk to begin the installation.Thought I had a clue, but stuck in the jungle upgrading. Which one is which - is Jaguar 10.2??? Do I need to be doing each of these upgrades to get it running well until I add the RAM? I'm trying to stay calm since it updated my IE and I think I lost everything I had on it - too fast with the click and assumed they were separate entities....(unless there is a genius out there who can help on that front too)
    many thanks... Kate

Hi Kate! And Welcome To Discussions!
You're lucky Kappy is helping you out with this. He is one of the more knowledgable posters here!
I'm just adding some extra info.
There are two PowerBook models that need a Firmware Update, before you can install a newer OS X.
Check if one of them is yours.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.6 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
Jaguar Full Retail Version CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 combo update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final edition of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.6 Combo Update.
You'll find System Requirements in these links:
    Panther
    Tiger
    Additionally,
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • Cannot Access USB Hard Disk

I have a USB hub connected to my airport with a printer and USB hard disk attached. I can see in manual setup in AirPort utility that both the printer and the hard disk are set up and connected. The printer prints wirelessly.
My problem is that I cannot find the hard disk on my computer in order to take and put in files. Where is the hard disk located???

In the Airport Utility /Disks/File Sharing make sure 'Enable file sharing' is checked. Select your choice for access (Secure Shared Disks).
Airport Disk Utility: I have enabled 'Automatically discover AirPort Disks' as well as 'Show Airport Disks in the menu bar'. My action for the Airport is 'Connect with Password'.
More often than not every disk I add to the hub (which is attached to the base station), shows up immediately. When it doesn't, I simply use the menu bar icon, click on the airport name and click 'OK' once the disk availability box appears. My oresent setup is to remember the password in my keychain.
Note: since updating the firmware as well as Airport application, I have had no issues with hard drive access or, in particular, printer access.

Have you tested that the MBP USB ports are working?
    Have you tried different cables?
Does the HDD work on other macs.
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility?
Have you tried the bare HDD in another enclosure?

  • How can I have ext hard disks show on "About this Mac/Storage" that are ousted and show on screen

I have Mac 10.9.5, Intel.  I was working in iMovie, when message came up and said I do not have enough space on my hard disk.. I have several hundred GB available.  All my ext. I have rebooted also.

  • IMac 27'' mid 2011 hard disk failure with FileVault 2

    Hi,
Recently I had had some troubles with my iMac and everything is pointing out to the hard disk.
2 weeks ago I rebooted the iMac and i lost all my data because of a hard disk failure. The disk just got corrupted according to what i could see. From there, i had a lot of troubles trying to reinstall the last version of OS X (10.8). I indeed formated the disk and i even securely erased it. When I tried to reinstall it from external HD or from a USB key i usually (not always) got error in the final steps of installation. However, if i use the Recovery partition to install from Internet i ain't got no errors.
With OS X already installed, i also tried to encrypt the disk using FileVault 2 and i got an error again. This time, when 2 hours left to finish the encryption. Specifically this error: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4218952?start=0&tstart=0 (Trying to encrypt but it always fails). It seems to be a common error which a lot of people is suffering, but i still don't know if my case is a hardware problem or, on the other hand, a software error.
I carried the iMac to the tech support in my city and they discarded a hardware problem. They gave format to the disk and installed OS X with no problem, so they told me to check if the iMac keep spitting some error or just it has any anomalous behavior. Actually it seems to run fine, no errors yet excepting FileVault 2, which is generating the same error.
I have always used FileVault without any kind problem (in all my macs, including this one), so could it be a Mountain Lion issue?

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq "I/O error" | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command.
Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.

  • Imac cannot detect external hard drive

Running Imac 2.66 ghz i5 on osx 10.8.3   i have a 500gb G drive as the back up for time machine been running fine for 2+ years...now it will not recognize the hard drive...tried a number of things...restarting several times...disconnecting the drive...changing usb ports...any help appreciated

Can you hear it spin up when you power it?
Also, try to reset your SMC just incase your USB bus needs reset.

  • Imac as center of hard disk / music system / television

With lots of music on an external hard disk (LaCie 2TB with firewire 800 and USB3), a music system (Exposure amplifier with AUX IN), and a television (Samsung, HDMI/DVI IN), I would like to connect everything to my iMac from 2010 (USB2 or firewire 800), by cable or wifi - how do I connect, which cables do I need, and do I need to buy any hardware? - I want to hear the music from my hard disk via the iMac (or directly if possible) on the audio system (and, if possible, to record music on the iMac from records); and I want to see/hear whatever is on the iMac (like films, photos, live tv by internet etc.) on my tv set.
Yes, a bit complicated, but I think this is what many people would like.

You need to have some "computer" involved to interact between your hard drive and your TV and your sound system. From your post, it sounds like you want to do a lot of things. And in order to do a lot of those things correctly you need to have something that is diverse enough and powerful enough to handle those things.
I use the Mac Mini for this. Its a small computer, but has no screen, keyboard, or mouse. Basically its a toaster sized box that can do everything that you'd want. Look into a Mac Mini to run your media server. Mine is hooked up to my TV and sound system. I then have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to control it or I can control it with my iMac using screen sharing.

  • Cannot access external hard disk

I keep all my data in Segate external hard disk. Today I wanted to set up windows using Boot camp. The window installed but at the end it froze. By mistake I kept the External hard disk connected to my Macbook Pro. When I rebooted I cannot find the my external hard disk. I tried to access through Mac partiton but it displays waring.
Saying I need to Initialize the external hard disk. That mean I will end up with erased hard disk which is not i want. Is there any option. ?
It looks like Mac OS cant recognise the drive at all. When I open the Disk Uitiluty I can see the drive.
    Any ideas guys

Try opening Disk Utility and try repairing the disk. It might hopefully be able to repair it. Otherwise you're probably looking at needing a tool like DiskWarrior 4…

  • Airport extreme doesn´t recognize usb hard disk

After one year of no problems using it, suddenly, the airport utility doesn´t find my usb hard disk connected to an Airport Extreme base station. There is a firmware upgrade to 7.7.1 for this same but unfrequent and rare issue (Apple´s words), though it is only forseen for the new base stations AirPort Extreme 802.11ac and mine is 802.11n.
Has anyone experienced this problem, any solution?
    Thanks in advance.

I just called Apple Care and I'm astonished by the answers that the operator gave me :
    - he couldn't confirm if Airport Extreme could handle 4 TB disk drive or not. More : he said he cannot obtain this information.
    - he advised me to plug on my Aiport Extreme a 4 TB drive borrowed to a friend, or buy a new 4 TB drive in a shop with a 4 days refund policy (to return the drive after the test).
I was very unsatisfied by these answers, arguing to my operator that for me HE is Apple and I expected him to have informations about the specs of Apple products. In the end he advised me to go in a Genius bar with my hard disk. So I asked him a ticket number to give to the Genius bar. He said there was not.
I'm very frustrated by the very low level of information of this call :
    - Apple Care didn't confirmed an information that looks correct according to newsgroups or a technical support reseller,
    - Apple Care couldn't confirmed the problem was handled by a developpement team at Apple, neither when it could be published.
Another point about Apple Care : when I called Apple Care Yesterday, they said they couldn't handle my request because I haven't the serial number of the Airport Extreme. I said I wanted to confirm the incompatibility for ALL the Airport Extreme, but they argued they must give me a correct answer for my case, especially. Today, after giving the serial number, they said they couldn't answer.
The Apple technical specification of Airport Extreme don't show any limitation in the size of the drive :
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP628?viewlocale=en_US
The MacWay reseller technical support confirmed me that no Aiport station they sell are supporting today 4 TB drives.

  • Best software for doing full backups to ext. hard disk to to be used to restore system

As a new PC owner I wanted to find out what the best software for doing full backups to external hard disk,  to to be used to restore the system if primary primary disk crashes. Im aware that Windows, Acronis and Paragon all have software that doing varying degress of back and resore functions.

    lasvideo,
My favorites are ShadowProtect to do an "image backup" of boot drive and Beyond Compare for backing up files for all other "data" arrays. ShadowProtect does not seem to have much market share compared with Ghost and Acronis, but I really love it.
    What I like about ShadowProtect:
    - Extremely fast (complete image backup for 61GB of files on my boot SSD RAID 0 array to a RAID data array takes less than 3 minutes)
    - Can do image backups across a LAN; restores from boot CDROM and USB device
    - Allows for backups from one controller and restore of OS on a different controller and/or RAID configuration (has HAL tools; Hardware ? Layer I think)
    - Can "mount" an image backup as a drive letter and see (and copy) all directories, files, etc. that are contained in the archive
What I like about Beyond Compare:
    - Can choose what to backup and what to ignore very easily (for example you can set it to ignore certain files or directory names to ignore and then save how you set things up as a "session")
    - Only needs to copy over files that are new or have changed since your last backup
    - Makes it very easy to selectively delete files from your backup

    Jim

  • My MBP won't recognize my hard disk

    Hi guys
Two weeks ago my Macbook Pro (Mid-2010 model) started getting very slow. I suspected it was getting too warm, so I put a fan under my computer to cool it down. It helped a while, but then it crashed completely. If I try to turn on my MBP, it will only show the dreaded "white screen of death". So it is likely that there is something wrong with my hard disk . However, it can't find my hard disk even when I'm using disk utilities, not even my new hard disk. I tried to plug the hard disks externally through one of the USB ports, and then it suddently shows that BOTH harddisks are working! I really hope that my motherboard isn't fried, so is there any other explanation to this?

It may be that the SATA connection cable has failed.  If you can see the HDD externally but not when it is internal in the MBP, that is usually the symptom.  Have it checked out and it that is the problem, it is an inexpensive repair.
    Ciao.
