Imac cd drive busted, need to re-install os

Hi all, newbie here
I believe I have the original bondi blue imac(rev.a). I'm running the latest version of 0S 9 that you can possibly run. I've had this machine since 1998! I put more RAM in it sometime in '99 so I've got 84 I think.
The only thing this machine is used for these days is the internet and some light page design Quark. And it BARELY does those things. SO SLOW!!! This is still all we'd like to use it for so I'd like to run the bare minimum on it, optimized just for surfing the internet.
What I'd like to do is a clean re-install so maybe it'll run faster. My cd drive (tray loading) won't read anything. Everytime I try I get a "disk is unreadable, do you want to format) error.
I'd like to fix this at little or no cost. Also I have access to a PowerPC G5 at work so I could download stuff and transfer it on my usb disk.
Any ideas you have are greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
My cd drive (tray loading) won't read anything. Everytime I try I get a "disk is unreadable, do you want to format) error.
That would tend to indicate the drive may be okay - the Mac knows it is there, it knows there is a disk in it, and it tries to read it. All those indicate the drive is working.
One thing that can cause those symptoms is dirty lenses inside the drive, such as an accumulation of dust. Try getting an audio-CD cleaning disk or kit, and using that to clean the drive.
That model iMac, a Bondi 233MHz model, has very limited boot-source capabilities. It does not have a SCSI port nor a firewire port, and is not USB bootable. That pretty much limits it to the internal hard drive, and the CD drive. You will probably need to find a way to get the CD drive to work in order to install any OS.
One possible alternative - remove the hard drive, put it in a multi-drive capable Mac, such as an early G4, then clean install a universal (boot-any-Mac) install of OS 9.2.1 on it. Once that's done, bring it back to the iMac.
I would not suggest installing OSX on a machine that slow.

Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.

IMac Hard Drive Crashed - Need to get music from iPod to new hard drive

The 250GB hard drive on my iMac crashed - totally fried. It's been replaced and the operating system and software reinstalled. The problem - I have 22GB of music on my iPod (5G, 60GB) that I'd like to get back onto the computer. All music is legal - ripped from my library of 500+ CD's. The iPod is already set to manual updates and for use as a disc drive.
Someone please tell me there's a way to do this without having to rip all 500 CD's again...

We need smarter written install programs!!!

In this age of small SSD boot drives, we need much smarter install programs, One of my pet peeves is the manufactures that send out to the public unpartitioned drives. There should always be a "C" (system) and a "D" (data) partition. At any rate the install program should only install the programs system requirements on the "C" drive and give you an option of which drive to place the rest of the installed files. It does not take more than 10 minutes to add the option to the install program. (I've done it). Come on installer writers, don't be so lazy.

As per my understanding you should be able to deploy your non-SAP application on the PI 7.0 without any issues. Please try to use SDM / JSPM to deploy your application. Also, the NW database itself would be used in turn.

1. You can use any 3.5" Sata drive, WD or Seagate would be good choices.
2. Do not use "green" drives like the WD Blue series. WD Black are fine as are Seagates.
3. The 2T green will work fine in the Intel iMac's. I always suggest using the quieter and cooler running Blue's or Green's in the iMac's.
4. Personally I have upgraded the Hard Drive in several Early Core Duo's using both 320GB and 500GB WD Cavair Blue's.
5. WD Caviar Blue or WD Caviar Green, they run cooler and quieter than the WD Black or Seagate's.
6. I'm very happy with the WD Caviar Blue that replaced my factory installed 160GB Seagate HD a few months ago.

I've never seen that problem, but others have reported it. Maybe you should search for those other topics. You might try the following:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
    Then download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite.
    Then download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.

Remove MS Office 2011 completely (here are instructions) and reinstall it.
It's not a simple or fast process but it is important to follow all of the steps in order to get all the files that Office scatters around. This will not affect your data files, only MS Office and its preferences.

I started on the installation CD OS X 10.4.2, I used Disk Utility
to partition the disk according to the document that you have proposed. unfortunately
I have not succeeded. When I partition the disk, even if I called it Macintosh HD, it
does not keep the name and it shows disk0s3 instead. I did an erase on disk.
When I mount the disk it tells me that I must repair. When I tried to repair, I got
the following message:
Volume check failed
The underflying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
I also had a message:
Invalid b-tree node size.
Note: The disc is new, but it has already been formatted on a computer Imac 27 inch 2011 OS X Lion.
I used a USB 2.0 to SATA cable to adjust the formatting.

First, the recovery option is built in to OS X - not the disk. If you install the new drive without formatting it first or without having an OS on it, it will not work (at least as far as I know). Most drives need to be formatted and it needs to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use the GUID Partition Scheme.
You said that your hard drive is fried but that you can access the recovery? The Command + Option + R is the internet recovery which means it accesses Apple's servers and a limited number of things including disk utility. I've not dealt with this type of problems, so I'm not sure, but If you can access that and you have your new drive in an external enclosure and attached, then you may be able to use Disk Utility on the recovery to format your new drive and then choose to install the OS directly on it.
The second possibility - and, according to the following article, this should work directly (I've not tried it, so I can't guarantee it will):

The easiest way would be to attach the new drive in an enclosure and use your internal's disk utility to format and then clone the entire thing to it, but that does not appear to be an option. Unless...... do you have a bootable clone backup or a Time Machine backup?

Short answer: You do NOT have to reinstall all your apps and copy your files back.
Longer answer: Upgrading the OS does not touch any user files. Upgrading the OS should not interfere with any applications which are compatible with Mavericks. In my experience non-Apple apps are generally left unchanged by the upgrade. It is possible that some apps may need to be upgraded. One good resource for checking application compatibility is RoaringApps.
Finally, it is always wise to backup everything, just in case.
