IMac - Chassis -v- Screen Dimensions

OK, I see the new iMacs and I think I want one, probably one of the 20" models. I just have one question about the dimensions:
What is the distance from the bottom of the case/chassis/frame to the bottom of the actual display? You know, that white strip under the display, where the Apple logo resides... how high is that?
I can see that there are a couple of inches separating the bottom of the iMac from the bottom of the display within. I'd like to know exactly what that measurement is so I can set my existing display to that height and see what it will be like when the Dell morphs into an iMac.
The reason I'm asking: I presently have a nice 20" Dell wide-screen display that has about a 3/4s bezzel all the way around it. And I have it mounted on a flexible arm that allows me to put the very bottom edge of the display right on my desktop. This gives me ideal ergonomics -- I don't have to lift my head at all to see the entire screen.
I have gone to considerable effort (and modest expense...) go get that effect, and I understand that there is a universal display mount available so that I can mount the iMac on my current floating arm.
So, could somebody with an iMac and ruler handy tell me how high is that gap? (I know it might be different for the brand-new aluminum models, but the current dimension will suffice for my purposes). And, please, don't measure the distance from your desktop to the bottom of the display with the built-in stand. That's coming off so that I can mount the iMac on my adjustable, floating arm.
Thanks,

For starters, what's "KVM" ?
I had always planned on just going mac mini, until I priced out the new ones and then looked at the new imacs in comparison.
Seems to me a high-end mini is still half the price of a mid-range 20" iMac. I mean, a mini I configured came in at about a grand, and the iMac came in at about two.
For 90% of what I do, the mini should be plenty. But I do want to do some simple video stuff, so the more CPU and GPU the better.
You don't think the 2GHz dual core with 2GB RAM could handle video? I guess the issue is GPU... no fancy GPU in the mini, huh?
I just hate that panel below the display that elevates the whole thing. I really like the display an inch off my desk.
My wife is a photographer and has a new MBP, but she could also use the imac sometimes... Whereas the mini, I'm not so sure how it would cope with some aperture stuff....
She uses Aperture instead of Photoshop? Another friend of mine (the one who so strongly advocated switching to Mac) is also a semi-pro photographer and he uses Aperture now. I don't know if I want to go through another learning curve... what's the upside of Aperture? (Maybe your wife would like to chime in?).
I'm using the highest-end MacBook (2.16GHz, 2GB-RAM, 160HDD) and I have yet to run up against any limits, but, then, I've mostly been writing and surfing and haven't tried any power apps yet. But I will probably get Adobe CS3 with Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Unless somebody talks me out of that, too. You don't think a mini has enough horsepower for those apps?
I really need to go see the new ones to see if I can even stand the glossy screen. :-/ That may help make the decision!.
The MacBook has a glossy screen, and the gloss hasn't proven to be a proble for me. I think the iMacs use pretty much the same screen, just larger, so I don't think you'll have any problem with it.
Just have to get rid of that 4-1/2 inches from desktop to display... hate it.

  • IMac 17" screen dimensions

    Can anyone tell me what the actual screen dimensions (height and width) of a 17" iMac? Thanks. I use Sibelius and Logic Express and would like something that has enough height and am deciding between a Mini with a big monitor or a 17" iMac. I find the widescreen monitors to be a little short in regards to height. Any other advice would be appreciated.

    I decided to go with a 19" monitor and a Mac Mini.

  • Which Airport card do I need for an iMac G4 Flat Screen 15"?

    Hi, I have an iMac G4 (flat screen, with silver arm and round base), 15".
    I'd be extremely grateful if someone could let me know which Airport card I need for this Mac and also whether or not I also require an adaptor. I have looked this up on the Apple site and also in 'The Flatscreen iMac for Dummies' book (I'm a complete technophobe, I'm afraid!), but am none the wiser.
    If possible, model numbers for the Airport card and adaptor that I do need would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Jeremy

    Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and click on More Info, or if you're running Mac OS 9, choose Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu. Check the speed of the computer's CPU; if it is below 1GHz, you need the regular AirPort card, with the AirPort Extreme card being used on newer iMacs. No iMac G4 requires an adaptor to use an AirPort card.

  • Why can't I use a Thunderbolt iMac as a screen for an TV or a gaming console?

    Is there any hopes for a device/adapter that would make it possible to use an Thunderbolt-equipped iMac as a screen for other devices? It worked with DisplayPort, why wouldn't it work with Thunderbolt? Is it just a business political decision?

  • IMac 27" frozen screen

    just can not identify in what situations, but when my Mac has a frozen screen, I have no other alternative but to push the off button. The most ironic thing is that, clearly the internet connection keeps. I know this because I'm usually listening to online radio. When it occurs, I can not change my dashboard and also can not switch to another application because I can not use the keyboard and the mouse click does not work.
    I am currently using Mac OS X Yosemite, but the problem has persisted for several other versions of the system.
    I

    I have exactly the same problem with a my 27" iMac of exactly the same vintage and configuration. It freezes this way anywhere between once a day and once a week.
    I also see an additional variation of this crash, where when I wake up the machine from sleep, the backlight comes on, but no image is drawn. It glows gray. In the form of the crash that Helton reports, the cursor moves with the mouse, but nothing responds to clicks. I've also seen where streaming (and I believe locally stored iTunes) continue) to play. I am not sure whether the machine remains visible on the network.
    I have never used any anti-virus on this machine. In a desperate attempt to isolate the problem I have done the following:
    Fresh clean install of Mavericks onto a new, external Firewire 800 drive
    After the install, I only re-installed the apps I use frequently: iTunes, Aperture, Chrome, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Remote Desktop, HP printer driver, TextWrangler. That's it.
    Replaced 3rd-party memory I had installed with the original factory installed 2x 2GB DIMMs
    Blown out the bottom vents and the circular vent in back with canned air
    Unplugged the external DVI monitor I was using
    Done the usual setting resets via the startup
    Ran the built-in memory checker at startup
    Ran checks on the harddrives for errors, permission problems, etc...
    Wiped the internal drive clean, and did a fresh install on that
    The crashes still occur.
    The system does not appear to be hotter than normal. I used to have a widget that monitors temps (but doesn't change fan speeds).
    This system has the Seagate 1TB harddrive that was eligible for a recall, but I didn't do it. The drive has never reported any SMART errors.
    Since you are still seeing crashes after updating to Yosemite, I'm not sure what to try next, myself. I've considered pulling it apart to make sure there is no dust in the fans. It doesn't seem to be overheating, but despite the sensors, there doesn't seem to be a way to record a regular temperature history to see what the temps were like at the moment of the freeze.
    Of course, it's out of warranty. It's five years old, but it's plenty fast enough for me. The screen is still gorgeous. If it weren't for this, I'd use it for at least another two years. I was thinking of getting a MacMini to plug into it and use the iMac as a screen, but the new MacMinis are dual-core. It wouldn't be a nice leap in performance.

  • Getting mobile screen dimensions

    Hi all,
    I'm developing a game which is to be played on two mobiles. I use the Canvas class to display the playing field. Both mobiles need to decide on the screen size that both mobiles can use, e.g. find the smallest size displayable in both mobiles.
    I use getHeight() and getWidth() in the canvas objec MyCanvas:
        public MyCanvas(MyGame theGame, MyData theData, Font theFont) {
             myGame = theGame;
            myData = theData;
            font   = theFont;
            // Get dimensions of the screen
            height = this.getHeight();
            width  = this.getWidth();
            myData.setFieldDimension(width, height);But if I ask to print the dimensions using:
    System.out.println (" myCanvas.constructor, read height=" + height + " and width = " + width + ".");        I get:
    myCanvas.constructor, read height=0 and width = 0.
    Anyone know why I do not get the requested screen dimensions?
    TIA,
    Maik

    Hi,
    I appreciate the effort you both put into my problem, but your advices contradicts each other.
    I set my code back to the original situation, like:
        public MyCanvas(MyGame theGame, MyData theData, Font theFont) {
             myGame = theGame;
            myData = theData;
            font   = theFont;
            // Let Server start
            isServer = true;
            // Get dimensions of the screen
            height = getHeight();
            width  = getWidth();
            myData.setFieldDimension(width, height);
    System.out.println ("myCanvas.constructor, set height=" + height + " and width = " + width + ".");
            // Set width of the rackets
            racketWidth = width/QUOTIENT;
    System.out.println ("myCanvas.setScreenDimensions, set rackets to; " + racketWidth);
        }with the result:
    myCanvas.constructor, set height=0 and width = 0.
    myCanvas.setScreenDimensions, set rackets to; 0I even tried waiting until the canvas is shown by using Canvas.isShown(). But no luck in that department.
    Anyone have an insight I can use?
    Maik

  • Command + F2 does not turn iMac into a screen

    hi, i am trying to use my 27" iMac as a screen to my Macbook Pro Retina.
    I have the thunderbolt cables plugged in, but pressing Command + F2 does not work. Yes i am pressing these buttons on the iMac.
    The first time i tried it a few days ago, the iMac did turn into a screen, but after a while it fell asleep and the connection was lost. I have not been able to restore it again, which is annoying.
    Another guy at work has the same issue and he has found it randomly works and sometimes doesn't.
    Does anyone know why? feel like the $50 spent on the cable is a massive waste of money if its not going to work. Wish apple would fix this.
    Any help is appreciated!
    i have also looked at   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924   and it doesnt have anything i dont already know

    So i was able to solve the issue by updating my operating system. I havent yet upgraded to Mavericks, im still on 10.8.5 but as soon as i updated, the iMac started connecting to the macbook pro.

  • [solved] screen dimensions & xorg config

    I've been trying (finally) to improve the appearance of fonts in my system. In the process of following the wiki font configuration guide, I checked out the dpi/screen dimensions identified by xorg. According to my calculations, xorg is getting the physical dimensions of my laptop's display wrong. It correctly identifies the native resolution as 1366x768 and then uses a dpi of 96 to calculate physical dimensions:
    $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 reso
    screen #0:
    dimensions: 1366x768 pixels (361x203 millimeters)
    resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
    However, my laptop screen is 11.6" which I think is about 256.8x144.4 mm with a dpi of 136x135. Er... ish.
    Trying to follow the wiki instructions for configuring xorg at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xo … ze_and_DPI, I created a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-monitors.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "LVDS1"
    DisplaySize 256.8 144.4 # In millimeters
    EndSection
    However, this produces pretty ugly results. Fonts look all wrong - at least in some applications - and things just generally seem too big. So I removed the config file and rebooted and everything looks OK again (actually a bit better than before - probably because I'd got through part of the font config guide). I have no non-default config files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ - just default files for evdev, quirks and synaptics.
    So now I'm confused about what dimensions I should be using.
    I would have thought that with the autogenerated settings above, I should find things not fitting onto the screen because X believes that the physical screen is larger than it really is. But that's not what happens. Everything fits fine. Plus I'm not sure how to check but the resolution looks comparable to the resolution I get in the ttys.
    I'm using the intel i915 driver with various power-saving options (which don't affect display so far as I can tell). It's one of the integrated graphics chips. There's no separate graphics card to complicate (or improve!) things.
    Could somebody explain what might be going on? Or give me a reference? I don't understand how the physical dimensions X uses can be incorrect and yet everything fit and look better than when I force it to use accurate ones.

    High resolution in the TTY means that you have KMS activated, which is a good thing.
    Of course anything bigger than 96x96 or 100x100 DPI is going to look awkward, it's an 11.6 inch screen! Or did you actually try to bring a ruler to the screen and measure a 136x136 pixel image? There's this little thing called dot (pixel) pitch: 0.39, 0.33, 0.28, 0.265 mm, etc.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dots_per_i … _standards
    Obviously Microsoft's sneaky little hack had very long-term consequences, when instead they should've just used a better rendering method. "However, larger graphical elements meant less screen space on which to draw" - which is what you experienced when everything looked like it was on steroids.

    Older model iMac.  Grey screen, no tones, apple logo and spinner, then shuts down.  Tried all greyscreen tips on Apple Website.  Do not have start up disc.  Do not know what OS it runs.  Suggestions?

    Since you don't have a startup disc you haven't done ALL of the tips on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    I don't know what you've done but you need to follow the tips listed and that could include possibly erasing and reinstalling the OS. Older model iMac does nothing to help us understand what you're working with. You can call Apple and provide them with your serial number and for a fee they'll ship you a set of original install discs or you could possibly use Snow Leopard which you can get for $20 here http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

    There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
    Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
    Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
