IMac clicking when starting up or waking up

I recently replaced my internal hard drive in my 20" iMac and it worked beautifully for about a week.  Then, suddenly it started making a horrible clicking noise upon startup or when waking up from sleep.  It goes on for about 10 minutes and then eventually tapers off and quiets down.  But it happens every time I start up the computer or when I wake it up after it's been asleep for a while.  I don't seem to be having any other problems with the functionality of the computer.  Everything is accessible and working OK on the computer.  I am just worried because many years back when I had a PC the internal hard drive failed after I heard a similar clicking noise, although it's been going on for a few weeks on my Mac without worsening, and my PC hard drive failed within a couple of days of the start of the clicking.
Is it possible that this is a fan or some other internal mechanism that possibly got jarred or moved slightly when I replaced the hard drive?  Or a bad hard drive?  I don't really want to open up the computer all over again but at this point, I suppose I have to.  I am just not sure what to look for when I do.  Anyone with simmilar experience or any advice about a plan of attack, please let me know.  Thanks!!
Also, here is a link to the sound that it makes.  You might have to turn it up a little bit to hear it well.

I ended up opening up my iMac again because I suspected that the problem was a cable that had not been tucked back in properly when I replaced the hard drive, and was flapping against one of the fans.  Before I opened it up, I put my ear against the back of the machine to see if I could pinpoint generally where the noise was coming from.  Once I opened it back up again, I saw the cables that must have been the cause of the noise.  I pushed them back into their housing a little more securely, closed up the machine again, and hoped for the best.  Sure enough, it solved the problem!  It's been a few weeks now since I did this and the clicking noise has not returned.
If your machine is brand new, you should be able to have the geniuses at the Apple store fix the problem, I would assume.  I don't know if your problem is the same as mine, since I'm quite sure it was a user error when I replaced the hard drive, but if you haven't been messing around with the inside of your machine, it may not be the same thing.  Good luck!

  • Inconsistent brightness when starting up or waking up

I have noticed that my 8 mos. old MacBook Pro is experiencing some inconsistent display brightness upon starting up or waking up. It appears that the center of the screen (about two inches wide running from top to bottom) is noticeably darker for about 30 secs. to 1 min. and then the brightness level seems to even out across the entire screen.
Anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

This is normal for fluorescent backlighting. Fluorescent lights have a "warm up" period. It will vary slightly from machine to machine... but this is just the way they work, it is not indicative of a problem. New MacBook Pros (15") use LED backlighting which does not have this "warm up" effect.

  • Audition clicks when starting playback

    Folks...
Just installed Audtion 3 on a Dell Optiplex 960. Using an older CardD soundcard. Have the ASIO drivers. The problem: when I hit the space bar or the play button, trying to play back files, I get an audible click through the sound card. Other than that there is no problem with the audio. sample rate doesn't seem to matter. This happens on both analog and digital outputs. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Technically, yes...  Your computer should come with the latest BIOS.  But the BIOS ins't a windows thing.  It's more of a motherboard thing that any OS would use.  So really it would be Dell that's at fault if your BIOS has a bug. Since people use their computers with different hardware and software most BIOS updates aren't crittical to a systems proper functioning.  It's only after a specific combination of components and/or software (or hackers) reveal a bug that an update becomes necassary for a small group of people and not necassarilly everyone who owns the system.  Then again the RAID problems on the OptiPlex 960 seem to be a bit more widespread...
To check the BIOS version just enter the BIOS screen using the F2 key (I think) and it should display it somewhere...

It could also be a chipset driver problem with the ICH10D/D0. Try the latest Intel Matrix Storage software at:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101
But if it's working now... Why mess with it   You could just end up making it worse...

  • Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..

Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..?
When my iMac goes to sleep I then later try to click the magic track pad or keyboard and it will usually then show the initial password entry login screen and then go off. The machine is still on but the display is black and will sometimes flash up the screen again if I press the magic track pad or keyboard but will then black out again..

Well, there are many different reasons why it does this. It might shut off due to power voltage problems, system overheats, or there is a System Problem. The reason it might be hard to boot up is because your power button might not work properly or your system hard drive is damaged.

This is probabaly caused by the resume feature. When you log out, uncheck the box that appears.

  • Why is my iMac clicking and having difficulty starting up?

In the past 2 weeks, my iMac has been making odd clicking noises when starting up and when waking from sleep. The motor drones to start up (accompanied by the clicking), will fail, and it will try starting again. It usually requires restart when I'm coming back from sleep. During start up, a folder icon with a question mark will flash. I have to restart around 10 times until the computer starts up normally (still with some clicking).
During use, the computer functions normally, although in the past day my computer will freeze my clicking power on my mouse. That is to say, my mouse can move around the screen, but clicking does nothing. This lasts about 2 minutes, and then my mouse works fine. Don't know if the problem is related.

    Hi and Welcome!
*"During start up, a folder icon with a question mark will flash."*
Go here: A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Hopefully booting from your install disk you can repair the disk using the Disk Utility app. If DU can't repair the disk the first time, click Repair again. Sometimes it takes a 2nd or 3rd pass. If DU cannot resolve the problem, then you need DiskWarrior or TechToolPro

  • I've a new account on iMac.  When composing an email the contact list does not show up on the bar.  WWhen I start keying in a name, it comes up with the address.  How do I engage the  contact list from the email?

I've a new account on iMac.  When composing an email the contact list does not show up on the bar, which would allow me to select the persons I want to include on the distribution of the email.  When I start keying in a name in the email, it comes up with the person's address, which shows it is synced.  How do I engage the contact list from the email like I do on my old account (where a contact list icon shows up, along with the "attach" and other icons) ?

With the New Message window open, go to the View menu and select "Customize Toolbar...".
In the screen that opens, drag the item labelled "Address" into the Toolbar area of the New Message window, then click the "Done" button.
That item should be then added to the Toolbar for the New Message window.
Note that the main Mail window and the New Message window (as well as the separate message window if you open a message that way) use different toolbars - the settings/inclusions for one do not carry over to another.

  • When I insert an audio CD into my iMac, it automatically starts playing

When I insert an audio CD into my iMac, it automatically starts playing, and I can't figure out why, nor how to stop this behavior. When I click in the upper right corner of my screen where it says "Finder", it shows the Finder as the only application running, and yet SOMETHING must be causing the CD to play. If it is an Extension that is being loaded, is it possible to terminate the Extensions one by one without restarting the computer to see which one is playing the CD?
Is the OS9.1 operating system supposed to automatically play audio CD's when they are inserted into the iMac? Or could it be an Extension that is doing it?And if so, why is no means provided to actually CONTROL the playing of the CD (such as a control panel with PLAY, STOP, SKIP, etc. buttons)?
On a PC, I can press Control/Alt/Delete to bring up the "Task List" that will show me ALL applications and processes currently running, and then terminate apps and processes one by one without having to restart the computer to see which one is playing the CD. Is there an equivalent way to display this information on an iMac that will show me which application or process or extension might be causing the audio CD to play, and allow me to terminate them one by one without restarting the computer until I can see which one is the "problem"?
    Jerry

    Hi, Jerry -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Finder uses QuickTime in the background to do that, hence no specific app is shown in the Application menu (the far right item in the main menu bar) in addition to Finder.
To unset automatic playing of CDs (and DVDs) -
Open the QuickTime Settings control panel (Apple menu > Control Panels > QuickTime Settings).
In that control panel, select AutoPlay from the pulldown menu in the control panel. Uncheck both the items shown in the new window. Close the control panel.
No restart should be needed in order to make the change effective.
Doing this will also guard against the (now ancient) AutoPlay virus, which could still be lurking somewhere on the net.

  • My imac will not start - it is hunged up, when I turn it on I see the apple and the little wheel go around and around and nothing happens - what can I do ???

Hello - can anybody help me - my Imac will not start - When I try to start it I just get to see the apple and the wheel that goes around and around  HELP !!

Restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. How you do this is when you hear the startup tone hold down the Shift Key until you see the progress bar appear. Let it fully boot, then open System Preferences - Startup Disk and ensure your internal HD is selected and then click Restart to test. If you still don't have luck you should run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, you may need to run the test 2-3 times to report any errors. To run AHT you will need teh ORIGINAL Install Discs that shipped with the computer. Instructions for AHT are in:

    Have you been backiing up?

Sometimes when starting up my iMac it shows only a folder icon with a question mark in it. Nothing happened. Only when start up again it runs ok.
What can be the cause of this.

That's an indication your Mac can't find a system folder to boot from.
Open System Preferences > Startup Disk
    Select:  MacintoshHD OS X
For OS X v10.4, v10.5, and v10.6 >    A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Helps when you ask for help to tell us which Mac OS X is installed.
If you aren't certain, click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.

  • Getting a flashing folder with a question mark when starting Imac.

I got this flashing folder with a question mark on it when starting my Imac this morning. Im running on Osx 10.6. I put it in target disc mode and connected it to my macbook pro. I opened the disc utility app on the macbook and found my imac. I "verified" it and found an error. When I clicked "repair" the disc utility app froze and crashed. When I opened it again my Imac didn't show up. I've restarted both computers several times with no luck. Whats my next step?

    Hi.
Try restarting your iMac while holding down the option (alt) key until the spinng gear appears.  You should momentarily be presented with a list of startup drives to select.
Choose Macintosh HD (your normal startup disk drive) and click the right-arrow.
When your iMac boots, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and again select your normal startup disk. Then click Restart.
    I hope this is helpful.
EDIT - disconnect the machines from each other first.

  • Does anyone know why or what is the reason when starting a new iMac with Lion a gray bar sometimes appears when loading software?

Does anyone know why or what is the reason when starting a new iMac with Lion, sometimes a gray bar appears under the Apple that begins to shade to dark as it loads OS?  It does this on occasion.  One time the system loaded was VERY slow and terrible colors.  Pulled the plug, re-started the computer and it did not do this.  As I say, its only on occasion, not every time.  I noticed in the discussion page there were problems listed for 10.6 nothing for Lion.
    Please advise, if possible.

You should see this 4 option menu.  Click on Disk Utility:
In Disk Utility, Select FIRST AID and then VERIFY and then REPAIR the disk.
    Ciao.

Hi everyone. I am trying to download ML on my iMac and when I click the download button, I am asked for my PW which I provide and then the ML icon launches in launchpad but nothing takes place. Have been trying for 2 days and this is driving me nuts. Help

Yes it does and there is an indication that the software is downloading but after a few hours, it just stops without any error message. Everything simply disappears and I need to start over again. I have a superfast connection so it should no be this slow. Everything worked fine on my MBP and I am in the same place. Any ideas

  • Imac crashes when i try to start itunes...all other programs are working fine....help !!!

imac crashes when i try to start itunes.... have updated everything...still crashes...please help...

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
