IMac compatibility with 5.1 digital speakers

Hello folks, here is my question (sorry if it's been posted before):
I have just purchased a logitech z 5500, which has a 5.1 sound. I am going to buy an iMac as soon as they release the new one, but will it support my speakers set? I know you can't tell yet, but what are your opinions? And do the latest iMacs support it?
Thanks.

Mac's do put out DD 5.1 sound, you just need an optical connection. The connector will need connections like:

If the Logitech Z 5500's have a optical connection then I'd say you're in business!

  • IMac compatibility with a Zyxel DSL modem

I installed a new Zyxel DSL modem connected to a Time Capsule with an ethernet cable with the TC creating my wireless network.  My iMac connects perfectly with the TC's wireless network, but the moment I switch on the Zyxel model to provide internet access, my iMac gets a beach ball that never stops spinning.  Are there compatibility issues between the Zyxel DSL modems and an iMac, or do I have settings on my iMac or Zyxel modem that causes some sort of conflict that causes my iMac to hang?  I've never had a problem before with my iMac hanging, it's been as solid as the rock of Gibraltar!

  • IMAC compatability with MS Vista

    iMAC 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Or not wait and see, it is really YOUR choice.
Go to the search bar and type in the words "Vista iMac" (without the italics, of course). You will get over 500 posts relating to the subject. Somebody out there has tried it. Hope this helps.
On another note, what's with some folks in here being so dang politically correct and all with regards to Beta products? Of COURSE Apple won't support Vista while it's in Beta, but that doesn't mean that people won't or can't try it. Stop trying to kill the messenger, and point them in the right direction, for crying out loud.
If loyal Apple fans didn't have a long history of being willing to be on the bleeding edge, or at least leading edge, of technology then I'd be typing this on an Apple IIc. Get over it and help people find the answers they are looking for, OK?

  • I have some old Boston Digital speakers from Gateway 2000 that I want to use with my Imac

I have a great set of Boston Digital speakers with a subwoofer that I purchased with a Gateway 2000 computer back in the day... the speakers are still in great shape and produce amazing sound.
Is there a way that I can use these speakers with my new Imac? Do I have to install a driver of some sort? Or could I just run down to radioshack and buy some sort of adapter?
I did some research already and they said that I needed to change my audio output to digital but I believe they were speaking about a Windows OS.
I appreciate it if someone else has run into this and can share some ideas.

Your BA 7500G sounds a lot like my "Digital BA735" 2.1 speakers that I purchased around '99 with my Gateway.  I just purchased a new iMac a few weeks ago and thought I'd dig out my old speakers that still sound great.  For about $20 you can purchase a converter, plug and cable from monoprice.com.  Another guy had my same BA 735s and got them to work on his iMac with these same connections.  The iMac headphone port is a special headphone/digital Toslink mini combination output.  Therefore, you'll need the optical Toslink to coaxial (RCA) Digital Audio converter.  If you haven't already gotten them to work, then soon you'll be enjoying those great sounding speakers again!
Monoprice.com (4 digit number is their product ID):
(2948) Optical Toslink to Coaxial (RCA) Digital Audio Converter.  This is a powered unit, converting optical to a coax digital signal.
(7240) RCA Plug to 3.5mm Mono Jack Adaptor - Gold plated.  This attaches to the "Coaxial Out" of the Converter.  After this RCA Plug is connected to the converter, you'll then attach your "green" headphone plug you cite above into the other side of the RCA Plug.
(1556) 3 ft Toslink to Mini M/M 5.0mm OD Molded Cable.  This runs from the iMac's headphone port to the "In Optical" port of the Converter.

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:

My iMac Seagate 1T hard drive crashed. I replaced it with a Western Digital 1T hard drive. Where can I get the Lion OS?
The iMac comes up with a ? in a folder, even after starting with Option/Command/R keys pressed.
    Please help.

Call Apple to purchase replacement discs or order a copy of Snow Leopard from Apple's Online Store. Follow these instructions:
Drive Preparation and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Once you boot from Snow Leopard you should open Software Update and install all the available updates required. After you complete this and restart the computer open the App Store application in the Dock or Applications folder.
    8. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Lion.
    9. After Lion's installer downloads, install Lion.

  • Analog Audio Output Jack for Digital Speakers with same jack configuration

I just purchased my first Mac, a Mac Pro. I can't get sound to my speakers using the analog out jack. With my old PC, there was a setting for "digital output" even though the digital speakers were attached via to the same style jack as the Mac's analog out jack. I've tried going to preferences but don't see a like setting for digital output. Is there a setting to do so and if not, is there an adapter to convert the Mac's digital audio out to the analog jack style?

Do you want digital or analog? Your question seems to imply that you have speakers that accept a digital signal but you also say you want analog...??
Anyway, my Mac Pro (2006 model) has separate analog and optical digital outputs on the back. The pictures on the apple website still show the same thing on the Mac Pro so I'm guessing it's the same. I think only the Mac laptops have the analog/optical digital combo jacks...
The optical digital outputs are the little white squarish ports beneath the rear firewire ports.
The MacPro does not have a SPDIF RCA style output. Maybe that is what you are thinking of from the windoze pc...
You should be able to enable the rear analog line output or the digital outputs from the System Preferences > Sound > Output screen. The front headphone outputs kind of act weird in that they disable the rear line output (if I remember correctly, I never use the front port...).

is it true that you can't use 5.1 sound in games with a Creative soundcard and Creative digital speakers?

I know that you can't have real 5. sound (only upmix) in games with Creative Digital-Speakers. Is it possible to connect, without the decoder box, the soundcard with the subwoofer (Line-Out -3)? I want to make the cable for LIN_OUT 3 by myself, but which of the 4 pins are for the subwoofer, center front or center rear (ground is clear)?

I have an iMac with 10.4.11 and a Mac Air 10.6.7. Will the Extreme be compatable with the 10.4.11?

10.4.11  Macs will have Kernel Panics when trying to use Dual Band Airport Extreme Base Station.  There are a few forums here dealing with it.  I just purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station and spent two days now figuring out why the old iMac G5 running 10.4.11 (Tiger) was Kernel Panicing.  There is a way that I am testing now that seems to be working.  I will post the link in a minute when I find it. Other solution is to upgrade to 10.5 .
    Here is the post
Aug 22, 2010 2:09 PM (in response to Acin)
Greetings... I have just found a resolution to this problem, at lease if you're using one of the newer Dual Band Airport Extreme base stations. This fix was provided by an AppleCare representative named Rebecca, and I am deeply in her debt. To review: MY PROBLEM - After installing a new Dual Band Airport Extreme in July 2010, I began to have frequent kernel panics with my older laptops running Tiger (10.4.11). My newer Intel/Leopard MacBook Pro ran fine with the new base station, but these older Power PC Macs with Tiger just crashed again and again. Pulling the Airport Card was the only fix. I tried every conceivable software and network fix; nothing helped. THE SOLUTION - The AppleCare rep talked me through this, but I'm pretty sure this was the procedure. Please note that I cannot guarantee that I have not forgotten a step! But I am fairly sure this is it. (If an Apple specialist is reading, please check this!) Keep in mind, this will only work if you have a dual-band Airport base station. I performed this on a Mac Pro running OS 10.6.4, with Airport Utility version 5.5.1 and firmware 7.5. 1. Launch Airport Utility.
    2. With the dual-band base station selected, click Manual Setup.
    3. Click the Wireless tab.
    4. Click the "Wireless Network Options" button near the bottom.
    5. Check the box that says "5 GHz Network," then enter a new network name in the Name field. (Your existing network name appears there now. Just delete it and type a new one.)
    6. Click Done. That dialogue will close.
    7. Now click Update. The Airport base station will now take about a minute to reboot. Here's what happens when you perform these steps... The utility changes your existing Airport network to 2.5 Ghz, and then creates a new 5 Ghz network with the new name. (It will apply the same password to both.) You will use the 5 Ghz network, the new name, for any new wireless computers using Leopard or newer OS. You will use the 2.5 Ghz network (bearing the original network name) for the older laptops running Tiger. This fix worked immediately, no problems. The issue is that Tiger does not perform well with 5 Ghz networks, and this causes the kernel panics. I now have two old G4 laptops running Tiger, both using my new Airport base station with the 2.5 Ghz network and running perfectly. At the same time, my new machine is using the 5 Ghz network at the same time. It seems quite stable. Good luck, and I hope this info is useful.
