IMac -- Compatible with UPS Square Wave Voltage

I have been reading of the incompatibility of UPS square wave outputs of UPS devices and the new energy star 4 or 5 computers. The new iMac is energy star-5 compliant. The power supply output of a UPS will not work with new computers.
Does anyone have any information on this issue?

I’ve been trying to find the same answers for my 24”, intel,Core 2 Duo extrerme, 2.8GHXZ, iMac (mid 2007) that Apple Engineering says has Active Power Factor Correction power supply.
All I want from an UPS is decent time to unmount my external H.D., save my working data, and shut down the iMac properly. After the better part of two weeks I believeI have found the answer for my situation. Disclimer: I am not a tech nor experienced in electrical matters but just a guy who hung in there trying to make sense out of many conflicting bits of information. This is not meant to tell you what you should or should not do. Just what I believe I’ve found and what I have done about it
after talking to lots of tech people. Corrections/updates welcomed!
1. Apparently, there are some recent models of computers that have an updated power supply commonly called Power Factor Correction power supply (PFC), more specifically called Active Power Factor Correction Power Supply. As I understand it they were previously found mostly in the higher end of computers and not commonly found in the type that the average guy would use. Now Apple Engineering has told me via Apple Care that my 2007 iMac has an Active Power Factor Correction power (akaPFC) supply and that all wide range voltage supplies are PFC. I take that to also mean late model iMacs and most likely Mac Pros have this type of power supply.
Mine has it and it is a 2007 iMac, I’m not sure when they started using it in iMacs.
2. So what ? Well, if you tell an UPS mfg. your computer has an Active Power Factor Correction power supply or even if you drop the word “Active” (and use PFC) they will commonly say you need an UPS battery that sends electricity via a Pure Sine Wave to the computer. They are very costly units, easily $500 and up.
3. What is an Active Power Factor Correction power supply, aka Power Factor Correction supply (PFC)? Paraphrasing and editing a statement from a battery mfg support page: Although a computer power supply draws only a fraction of its full capacity during its steady state (normal) operation, Power Factor Correction (PFC) supplies have the potential to draw their full capacity ( which I assume is the stated watts on the computers data sheet), instantly when passing battery power to the computer’s Power Factor Correction power supply.
So what? well, the UPS may experience up to 8ms transfer time during this period which is just long enough to remove power from the computer’s Power Factor Correction supply which subjects the UPS to the maximum power draw of computer’s Power Factor Correction supply (PFC). This could result in a potential UPS overload or dropped power load ( computer restart, shut down ) because the UPS does not have the ability to furnish the amount of demanded power (watts).
4. I solved my problem of what kind and reasonable cost UPS would work with my Intel iMac after talking with APC , local Apple Authorized repair & CyperPower. First I determined the max watts draw of my iMac x 3 ( to allow sufficient excess watts when in an instant max watts demand from the Computer’s Active Power Factor Correction power supply ) and added the max watts draw of my external H.D. and FIOS Router to determine the total UPS watts that would be required to aid in the UPS selection process.
I purchased a CyberPower UPS model CP1500AVRLCD 900W , which successfully sent Simulated Sine Wave power just fine to my computer’s Active Power Factor Correction power supply when testing it two times. No need for costly Pure Sine Wave UPS. Cyberpower says this unit will work with the iMac but not work with the Mac “Tower” / Mac Pro and I suspect it has to due to the huge difference between them in maximum watts that can be instantly drawn when the Active Power Factor Correction power supply instantly demands the full watts power from the UPS.
APC UPS model BR 1200 (also a non pure Sine Wave UPS) is recommended by a local Apple Authorized Repair facility (vendor) to his customers as working with the current iMacs.
I personally think the difference in working and not working is getting the right amount of excess watts in the UPS, can’t think of any other reason it works. I really don’t care as long as it works.

  • Are intel iMacs compatible with the M9177B/A cinema display

Are intel iMacs compatible with the M9177B/A cinema display please?

That Display has DVI input. So if you have a 2009 iMac with MiniDisplay port output as your profile suggest's...?
Then you will need a > Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.) and maybe a DVI cable if one is not with the monitor.

  • New iMacs compatible with Wacom Cintiq

I am going to be buying my first iMac next year. That being said will the new design of the iMac have the ability to hook up essentially an additional monitor? I am replacing my Wacom Intous3 and upgrading to a Cintiq next month and I am wondering if this will be compatible with new iMac (sounds redundant I know).
    Thanks

You would probably need to contact Cintiq for that information, although the new iMac's have been introduced they have not been released. Currently the most-up-to-date version of OS X is 10.8.2 so you should ask Cintiq if the device will work with that version of OS X.

  • Is my Imac compatible with Snow Leopard?

Hi, I have been reading through the posts trying to find a solution for the strange things my computer is doing (or rather, NOT doing) since I installed Snow Leopard.
I read that SL is not compatible with all machines... Could anyone tell me if my machine DOES qualify? Could an "incompatability" be the source of my computer strangeness?
When I click on "About this Mac" I am told I have "Mac OS X Version 10.6" (but it does not specify which version of 10.6). Is that normal?
    My Hardware Overview is :
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2,16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM61.0093.B07
    SMC Version (system): 1.10f3
    Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2C4F6F8
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT!!!

Could an "incompatability" be the source of my computer strangeness?
Most definitely. Quite a few applications & other kinds of software are compatible with one version of an OS but not with the next. Without a clue about what kind of "strangeness" you are experiencing, it is hard to make specific recommendations, but you should make sure everything you have installed that did not come from Apple is the most up-to-date version offered & known to be compatible with Snow Leopard.

  • Duty cycle two AO signals with a square wave

    Hello,
I am running two devices with sending two AO signals (sine wave) out simultanously in my code. I need to duty cycle my signals. in other words, I want to turn ON and OFF the devices continously. In order to do that, I am using a square wave generator with 50% duty cycle. The devices should be running when the square wave has positive values and should be OFF when it is negative.
The code almost does that, but it does not seem to be as fast as it is supposed to, based on the square wave's frequency. I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. In addition, I am not sure if this is the best method to do that, please let me know if there is a better way. I also attached the VI .
    Thanks,

I am using NI-PCI 6071E with BNC 2120as an interface. I am not sure if the problem is the hardware limits. Attahced please find the subvis which I used in my main VI.
one of the which has a for loop (duty_cycle.vi) works just fine and the other one (duty_cycle(new).vi), which is the one I am using in my VI, does not. Any thoughts?

  • Is iLife '05 iMac compatible with iLife '05 eMac?

I accidentally deleted iDVD and need to reinstall it except my disk is lost. I could get the iLife '05 from the iMac but don't know if it will work on the eMac.
Please someone help me before my life ends....
    Thanks

"The eMac was purchased in 2005. When we tried to install iLife '05 on it, it said "not compatible with this system".
The eMac has OS9 not OSX, we tried upgrading but that was not successful.
Would the OS be a big part in not allowing the install?
What sorts of trouble shooting can I do to get iLife '05 to install on the eMac? The program iLife '05 is originally from an iMac but both are PowerPC. I'm thinking the eMac just doesn't have enough memory to support it. It has 1 GB Ram and 1.44 Ghz processor but NOT intel core duo.
Not that that should matter but I'm at a loss for ideas.
iLife requires OS X. It will not run under OS 9.

  • Is the new imac compatible with the dell v313w printer for wireless connection?

Is the new iMac compatible via wireless connection with the Dell V313W printer?

    Hi Sara!
I got an email refering me to your post.  Ok, www.MacMall.com is a US website that sells Apple products.  I bought my iMac&printer through their website and worked with their customer service department to get my iMac communicating with the Dell V313W printer.  They have people that will take calls any time-any day at phone number 1-800-622-6255.  The other option since you are in France would be to contact a local Apple dealer...or see if they have an authorized dealer in Europe that could help.  I purchased the Apple Care Support contract with the iMac but they were unable to help since they weren't familiar with the Dell printer.
As I mentioned in my previous post the things we tried were: 1) If I remember right... I downloaded the Dell V313W printer driver from the Dell website then connected the iMac to the printer via the USB cable and established communication. I then disconnected the cable and 2) I moved the iMac and printer closer to my wireless router then 3) I turned on "Printer Sharing" on the iMac - I think this is a critical step...to do this go to System Preferences > Hardware > Print&Scan.  In the window that opens make sure the box is checked that says "Share this printer on the network" then go to the "Sharing Preferences..." box and check the "Printer Sharing" and "Scanner Sharing" boxes in the window that opens.  When I did all this the iMac went through it's routine to find the printer and the connection was finally established!
One more thing, make sure if your wireless router is locked for security that you enter the correct password when prompted...this might have been one of my problems also!
    Hope this helps.
    All the best,
    mw

  • Is the iMac compatible with RAM clocked at PC3-10666?

    I have a mid-2011 21.5" iMac with the 2.8GHz Quad-Core i7. It's currently at 4GB since $300 for 16GB RAM was just too much.
The specs tell me that this model iMac is compatible with DDR3 1333MHz PC3-10600 RAM. I've been looking around for 4x4GB units, but most of the ones I find are all DDR3-1333MHz PC3-10666, not PC3-10600.
Some sources I've read tell me that there's no discernable difference between the two, but I want to be sure before I buy anything. Most of those questions pertained to custom rigs.
Will my iMac accept RAM clocked at PC3-10666?

that will be fine, as confirmed in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16588791#16588791

  • Is the latest iMac compatible with external raid 1 drive setups?

I'm considering different new Mac options to replace my first gen Mac Pro. The new and most outfitted iMac seems like a good solution for my mostly Photoshop work. But, is the new iMac compaticle with Thunderbolt external RAID multi drive enclosures?

Sure, why not contact OWC (www.macsales.com) where they sell RAID solutions for Macs. Because they specialize in Macs they test every product they sell.

  • Mountain lion on iMac compatible with retina Macbook pro?

My late 2012 13" Retina Macbook pro running Mountain lion 10.8.4 is suddenly paralysingly slow due to kernel_task hogging my CPU. I have not been able to find a definite solution to this problem yet, but I am guessing some software installed is causing the sudden meltdown.
I ran Apple Hardware test 3 times.. the first time it spotted an error "4SNS....ICOR..." but after cleaning out the vents on my mac, it hasn't shown up again.
Now I read online that a clean fresh install of Mountain Lion may solve the kernel_task problem... however my rMBP is so slow, that I cant even manage to open the app store on it.
    So my questions are:
    1) Is there any solution to fixing the kernel_task hyperactivity on the rMBP that I am not aware of?  (Tried rebooting, resetting SMC, PRAM multiple times, repairing disk, repairing disk permissions -- all to no avail - the problem recurs after a short period of normalcy and then goes back to becoming unusable)
    2) I have a 2011 iMac... Can i download mountain lion on it via the app store, make a bootable disk from it, and use it to perform a fresh reinstall of mountain lion on my 2013 rMBP? Can OSX downloaded on app store of iMac be used on a totally different device like rMBP? Should I be worried about device incompatibility, drivers going out of whack, etc?  Or is the mountain lion installer a global software and can figure out the device make on its own and install itself correctly?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Oogamous

    1. That's a known problem in portable Macs. There's a fix but you have to follow the steps carefully > http://www.rdoxenham.com/?p=259 Make a backup of your files before doing this.
    2. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display was launched with a special OS X version, but as the most recent OS X version is 10.8.4, you can download OS X Mountain Lion from the iMac and use it in the MacBook Pro without any problem. Just download OS X Mountain Lion in the iMac and use Lion Diskmaker to burn it to a USB drive or DVD > http://liondiskmaker.com

  • Why isn't my iMac compatible with airplay mirroring with the new Mountain Lion upgrade?

Yesterday, I upgraded to the newly released Max OS X Mountain Lion, mainly because I was very interested in the airplay mirroring function that Mountain Lion brings to the table. To my dismay, however, I found that AirPlay is not available on my device due to the fact that my iMac is from mid/late 2010 and that function only works on mid-2011 and newer.
Why is it that my 21.5" iMac running a core i3 processor is not deemed worthy enough to have this function. I honestly feel a bit robbed that it is not included in my $19.99.  Why am I paying the same price as someone else who is getting that key feature.
I love Apple to death. I've had many of their products, but I really feel as though this is unfair, and that I have been mislead.

I don't know why it does not work - assuming it has something to do with firmware, EFI, or similar; however, if you want Apple to hear you, consider filing feedback here since these are strictly user to user forums:

  • Litescribe, I have external driver to enable me to use litescribe, is iMAC compatible with litescribe software. cheers

HI peeps, do you know if i can use litescribe on my iMAC. i have an external litescribe writer but I am srtuggling to find software to enable me to create designs.
    Any suggestions? cheers

Only LaCie that I'm aware has a Mac compatible Litescribe burner.  They issued a patch for Snow Leopard and Lion compatibility here:
    http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10061
You can read about other Litescribe options here:
    http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsection/mac/index.aspx?id=813
Though it is uncertain if any work via Windows virtualization or under 10.7.
    Caution about Litescribe:
While nice in principle, and probably safer than inks from Sharpies, and stickies, anything which modifies the original manufacturer surface of the CD can cause a disc to become unbalanced, and shorten its usable life.  Be prepared to make extra copies, and read my FAQ*:

  • Pocket PC for IMAC/IMAC compatible with IPAQ???

I currently have an HP IPAQ pocket PC which I use with my Windows XP computer.
I'm thinking of switching computers to an IMAC.
Can I maintain my HP IPAQ and still sync it with an Apple computer?
Would an IMAC still run Microsoft Outlook?
If not, does Apple have a "Pocket PC" type of product where I can keep my calendar, schedule, contacts, memos, etc all in one place that would be like a Palm or IPAQ?

Missing Sync has worked well for me. I was using a Cingular (now AT&T) 8525 which is a PDA/Phone combination, and I have it set to sync e-mail and calendar over the cellular or WI-FI net, whichever I am connected to at the time. I believe Missing sync has a "pass through" feature so that if your Mac is on the network with the Exchange server, it will connect and sync that way also, but I have never used it.
Since Windows Mobile 5.0, the mechanism for syncing up contacts, e-mail and calendar has been based on the same technology as Outlook Web Access, so pretty much any way you can get your mobile device conected to the Internet, you can sync with your Exchange server (2003 SP2 or later).

  • Is Bluetooth module for Mac Pro/iMac compatible with FW800 MDD?

I've been looking at fitting an internal Apple Bluetooth module in my FW800 MDD G4, and I've noticed the later modules for Intel Macs appear to have the same form factor. The connection to the logic board looks identical, as do the mounting holes. The only physical difference seems to be where the BT antenna connects (below on the original G4 card, above on the later modules).
Has anyone tried fitting one with success?

if you got the guts, shove it in there. think the issue you will have is the original machines supported the 1.1 cards, the card you speak of is 2.0

    Currently running Snow Lepoard
Is this machine capable of upgrading operating system to current version of mountain lion?

No, only mid 2007 Intel Mac models and later can install and run OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
However, your iMac model can install and run OS X 10.7 Lion.
My opinion, your iMac is too old. While you can install and run OS X 10.7 Lion, OS X 10.7 and 10.8 use a lot more CPU, GPU, RAM and hard drive resources that your model iMac simply lacks.
Your iMac model can, barely, take enough RAM to run OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard well enough.
You are better off staying on Snow Leopard than upgrading the OS.
You will be disappointed in the performance of OS X 10.7 Lion on your model iMac.
Your iMac is not up to the real world specs to run 10.7 Lion well, either.
