IMac completely freezes, but cursor still moves

My 2009 iMac has been experiencing a regular problem of late, it started about a month ago out of the blue and continues to happen with no rhyme or reason.
While in the midst of working (no specific app or task) my iMac will just freeze. You can still the move the mouse, you can't click on anything, and there is no interaction from whatever is on the screen. The only way to remedy the problem is to power down and start-up again.
I've never had this problem before and it's getting more and more frustrating. Does anyone have any idea of what might be happening? I am running the latest version of Yosemite and everything is up to date.

Thank you for your help - as instructed:

  • MBP (Early 2011 model) screen freezes but cursor still moves

I just got my MBP 15" 2 GHz Intel Core i7 (os X version 10.6.8) last September. There are times when the screen randomly freezes but I can still move the cursor (and music/sounds from Skype still play). This hasn't been happening recently but, last time it did, there were red and green dots all over the screen.

*Do you guys know how to fix this?

  • Screen Freezes but Mouse Still Moves

Hey I have an iMac with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors and I am running OS 10.6.7 and my screen freezes (sometimes goes to a black screen or many lines repeated) but my mouse is still able to move, then I have to shut down manually with the power button to reboot. It happens mostly when I am gaming with games such as starcraft 2 but sometimes with Word or Safari.
I have cleared my cache, vacuumed my computer, reinstalled OS X, tried regulating the temperature with smcfan but nothing works.  I also took it to futureshop on my warranty and they couldnt help me, nor could multiple Mac Phoneline assistants.
    Any solutions?

I added some Crucial Ram to my late '07 iMac (Aluminum, 20", 2.4 ghz),
Apple did some warranty work on it for me, a year or so ago, but.
I jumped up the Ram from 2-4. It's only showing 3 Gb's now.
And, the fans were ALL running at Full Speed! Wow, vacuumed my desk!
Anyway, I came here, and was advised to do several things, but the one that worked,
was 'Resetting the System Managements Controller" SMC.
    1  Shut down the computer.
2 Uplug the computer's power cord.
3 Wait fifteen seconds. (HMM, what couldja do?)
    4 Attache computer's power cord.
5 Press the power button, to turn computer back on.
I heard a high pitched 'Chong', (Higher than the start up sound), then, the start up sound.
Now, I'm in my comfort zone again!
Dam, if that didn't work wonderfully?!!!
    It did!
I hope that this may work for you!
    Be well.
PS btw, I still can't get my 2nd stick of Ram to work.
    I'm still working on that.
And, my third, Western Dig, 2 TB external HD!
What's with these third party suppliers?
    They suck!
Apple has to bring some control back in!
I bought the WD @ a Mac Store, (Cherry Hill, NJ)
    The Memory, through Amazon.
    Grrrrrrrr!
Hope this works for you, let us know, OK?
    Pete

  • Computer freezes but can still move mouse.

I have a dual 2.7 g5 with 2.5 gigs of ram. I have also installed a second internal 400 gig hard drive and all has worked for quite some time. I had noticed that since installing it I would get frequent spinning color wheel icons and simple tasks would take way too long to accomplish. Over the last few weeks my computer now has begun to freeze up as far as being able to click anything. Holding down option command Esc does nothing. I thought it only happened when running itunes while working in photoshop, but now its happening at random times doing a wide variety of things. I have unfortunately misplaced my install DVD's so I can't do a hardware test. I have looked online in the forums and have found a similar forum or two but with no solutions that have worked for me. Any ideas? I am running 10.4.8

    Jon Johnson4-
Without a disk to boot from you are limited. You really should run Disk Utility and repair permissions on the startup disk. You may want to pick up a copy of Disk Warrior to be safe.
Another thought is to get an external firewire drive and make a clone of your system drive, boot from it and run Disk Utility on the system drive. It couldn't hurt to have a backup.
You could try removing the disk that you added and see if the problem goes away. How full is your startup drive?
    Luck-

  • 2010 Macbook pro freezes a lot, but mouse still moves. It unfreezes if you wait. It also hard crashes... Also, weird lines and screen flashes.

I have a 2010 Macbook pro running snow leopard (Mac OS 10.6.8).  First off, this has been the worst computer I've ever owned or have heard of someone having, Mac or PC.  There hasn't been a time where something hasn't been wrong.  I'm going to list my specs, my current problems and maybe list previous problems after that.  Any advice or suggestions would be great.  My brother works for apple out in Cali and I've been sending him crash and bug reports and he can't seem to figure out what's going on.
    Specs:
2010 Macbook Pro (Mac OSX 10.6.8)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics Cards: Intel HD Graphics (288 VRAM) and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (512 VRAM)
(if you want more info, just ask)
To start things off, my computer hard crashes at random points playing basically any game.  StarCraft 2 (when I could play the game prior to Blizzard patching my OS out of the minimum requirements), League of Legends, MineCraft and others all crash while in use.  My computer screen suddenly flashes white and then to black and whatever audio may have been playing in the past second of gameplay is thrown into a constant loop.  The screen is solid black with no mouse and there is no keyboard functionality.  The only thing I can do is hold down the power button.  I first started noticing this problem back when StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm came out.  I would crash every 4 or 5 games in this way.  Since that was happening I resorted to playing other games such as League of Legends.  I wasn't having any trouble at all, but gradually it started to have the hard crashing issues.  Initially every handful of games, now it crashes in roughly 50% of the games I play.  This happens while I have NO other applications open and this has happened even after a complete restart with only 2 things opening at startup.  League started crashing in this way after I brought my computer in to have a fan replaced.
Another thing which has started happening since I had my fan replaced at the apple store: My computer has become very sluggish at times and my computer freezes in another way.  Many times a day, I will find I click on something in an application and the entire computer locks up.  There's no spinning beachball.  There's no movement of any sort on the screen and there is no button functionality, but I can move the mouse.  Clicking does nothing.  This sort of freeze lasts for about 30 seconds up to 5 or 6 minutes or so.  After that, it suddenly just decides to work again.  I can tell when it unfreezes because the clock in the corner jumps to the correct time.  This has happened frequently while using Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari.  It also happened while trying to use Skype.  It was freezing the most when facebook or youtube has been open, but it happens without that happening as well.  One of the first times I noticed it, earlier this year, I was searching for work and tried to go to this website: http://www.nhab.org/ (looking for a job).  It froze my computer as I described above (and I didn't know it would unfreeze after several minutes, so I thought my computer was completely frozen). I restarted, went to the same website and it froze again.  I did this a third time and it froze again, so I restarted again.  On the fourth try, it loaded.  The frequency of this problem is ridiculous.  I actually decided to delete Google Chrome from my computer (and its support files) since my computer would freeze the most often with Chrome (though I used Chrome mostly for youtube and watching tv shows online).  Almost instantly after deleting Chrome, my computer was running significantly faster.  things loaded quicker in other browsers and aplications loaded smoother.  My text no longer lagged when typing in facebook...  It hasn't solved the freezing, though the freezing tends to last less time now.
Another thing that happens, which I am not sure is normal: When my computer is booting, after the grey screen, it changes to light blue.  During this light blue time, often times white horizontal centimeter to inch wide bars will flash across the screen near the top.  This also happens on shutting down.  I also noticed that when it shuts down the screen doesn't just shut off.  The screen flickers quick for up to a second and then it is off.  It doesn't just turn off.
My computer has also occassionally flashed for a brief fraction of a second, to the blue start up color and back to whatever I am doing.
Those are all issues I am having right now and I am beginning to wonder if this several thousand dollar computer is capable of doing much more than just writing text..
    Prior issues I have had:
Right from the start, I have had major graphical issues which I showed to the people at the apple store and they reinstalled flash, but they really didn't know what was going on.  These glitches would tiles previous graphical things I had done in an artistic mozaic across my desktop, replacing my background image with broken mozaics.  It's hard to explain without showing, so here are 2 screenshots from it:
The people at the store thought it was just flash... but I don't understand how that could be flash.  I would have to flip through different desktop backgrounds I used to make it go away.  After it doing this for 2 years, it has only happened once since then and not very badly..
Another issue I had: The battery on my laptop just about exploded... I woke up one morning with my laptop sitting on my night stand as usual, but there was a small crack across part of my trackpad.  I was scared because I thought I must have done something... I went to the bathroom, took a shower and when I came back the crack was farther across the trackpad.  I had breakfast, came upstairs and my trackpad had 1 crack across the whole thing with multiple mini cracks going in every direction from it.  After telling my brother what was going on, he quickly said that it was the battery and to take it to a store.  I took it to the store and showed them what was happening and they very quickly took it out back and I quote "threw the battery in a firesafe immediately" because when they opened the laptop it started to quickly expand.  This ended up cracking my trackpad as well as bending the bottom of the body on the laptop.  All had to be replaced...
Then I had the fan sounding like a weedwacker, so I had it replaced a couple months ago and a couple months ago is when the freezing began, the computer started running slowly and all games crash the computer.
I have had a lot of things go wrong, not a lot of things go right and I'm really frustrated.  Can anyone tell me how to get my computer to stop freezing or how to make it stop hard crashing during any of the games I play?
Basically, what I have done so far is reset the PRAM I think?  I held command + option + P + R on start up and had it chime 3 or 4 times.  Other than that, I don't know what to do.... suggestions?

I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation.  My computer did have the faulty part you linked to.  I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager.  Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge.  They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test.  They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above.  I've never had this experience before.  Even brand new, I got occasional crashes.  Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow.  Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed.  Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton.

  • Recently installed updates - now iMac completely freezes up randomly

I recently installed a bunch of updates, including the 10.5.6 combo update (I think I was on 10.5.4 before then), RAW, QT, iTunes, iLife '08, iWork '08 updates, etc. I've been running skype, ichat, itunes, mail, safari, and occasionally pages in the background. I'm not doing anything crazy - I might have one or 2 docs pulled up in pages and 1 several page spreadsheet pulled up in Numbers. Randomly now my computer has completely locked up for no clear reason -- the mouse cursor disappears and the mouse and keyboard illicit no responses on screen despite all the apps still being up (even trying to force quit doesn't work as the key combo doesn't even bring up any menus). The computer just completely freezes and becomes on responsive. I've had to restart my computer using the power button both times now.
After the updates both disk utility and Onyx gave my system a clean bill of health. However, I did have issues installing the Quicktime and iTunes 8.1 updates -- Software update kept saying the installers were moved to the trash and thus couldn't open them even though that hadn't been dragged to the trash. I had to manually open both installers and run each of the packages separately.
I'm on a iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB or RAM - it's gen prior to the latest just released by Apple.
Has anyone had this issue? I think it might be related to Numbers, but I'm really not sure. ...I should have never updated.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you Repair Disk Permissions before and after installation of updates?
When you install updates do you leave the Mac alone to install the updates or are you multitasking and the updates are in the background?
Have you reset the NVRAM? Restart and press and hold CommandOption+PR until you hear a second startup chime, then release.
Forced shut downs are damaging to the directory. It is a good idea to boot from the Install DVD and use Disk Utility in the Utilities menu of the Installer to Repair Disk.

  • Macbook Pro 1,1 Overheating/Freezing. Can still move Pointer.

I have a hand-me-down first generation MacBook Pro. It gets pretty hot, especially during videos. I have Macs Fan Control installed so that has helped keep the temperature under control, but I'm not even sure that's causing the freezing. When the machine freezes, it'll sometimes just be during graphically taxing processes, like minimizing windows. I can still move the pointer around the screen, but it won't do anything. If there was a video playing when it freezes, the audio will continue uninterrupted.
Probably unrelated, the clicker on my trackpad will sometimes "triple-click" on a single click. This can be very annoying. Any help with this is also welcome
2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2GB Ram, OSX 10.6.8

The graphics GPU by current day standards is rather primitive and unfortunately there is nothing that you can do about that.  I purchased a 2010 MBP to replace my 2006 1.2 MBP because it could not handle HD video recording satisfactorily.
Videos are CPU and GPU intensive applications and require a lot of resources which create heat.  That is 'normal'.
    First try the following:
    SMC and PRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Open the MBP and check the interior for dust a debris.  Here are instructions how to open it up:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_15_mem_hd_opt/
    Use a cooling pad.
When you take the MBP apart, check the battery and see if there are any signs of distortion or expansion.  That may be causing you trackpad issues.
    Ciao.

  • Screen sharing: screen refresh keeps pausing but cursor always moves

    Hi,
I am screen sharing between two iMacs running the latest Leopard.
Ports have been opened according to the Apple KB. Quicktime bandwidth is set to LAN (both ends have high-speed internet connections), and iChat bandwidth limit is set to "none".
When I screen share the other person's screen everything works fine apart from this:
Every five seconds or so the screen refresh stops completely (the iMac is still working at the other end as I can hear the other person and he tells me what is on the screen). After about 10 seconds the screen refreshes and everything starts working again. Performance during these times is very good.
The odd thing is that when the screen refresh freezes I can still see the mouse pointer moving, and the person at the other end confirms that the mouse pointer is moving and that if I click a mouse button it performs an action at the other end!
I'm assuming that the screen refresh and the mouse handling are actually two seperate functions, and that the problem is with the screen refresh.
Everything used to work fine. Since the last time it worked fine we have:
    - Upgraded to the 10.5.5 Leopard
    - Upgraded QuickTime through Software Update
    - Replaced one of the cable modems. This modem does not have a firewall, and locally everything works fine.
Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong on the screen refresh side please?
    Thanks
    Darren.

Set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps
    Restart iChat.

  • Macbook pro keeps freezing finder freezes but mouse  still travels

lately my 17" (10.5.5) macbook pro keeps freezing every 20-30 seconds. what happens is the computer freezes for about 10 seconds, during that time i can still move the mouse but it of course will not operate anything. i dont get the spinning wheel, but it makes using the machine almost impossible.
if i am just browsing the finder it happens almost every 20 - 30 seconds, but if im in an app it generally happens when i try to switch to another window.
im waiting on the new 17" in jan feb but worried that i wont get that far with this.
have tried repairing disc permissions but no joy
    help

That is less RAM than req'd or recommended for Snow Leopard.
With a used system, always wipe the drive and system and install your own.
You can find RAM and storage upgrades @ www.macsales.com/macbookpro I woudl get 4GB  RAM and invest as well in a 256GB or larger SSD to infuse new life and performance. I'd even go with 8GB and SSD if yours can't take 4GB though ifi ti will and you can.
They have tutorial video and how to guides for upgrade RAM and t he internal hard drive. And be sure you are using backups, TimeMachine at a minimum. Also look into Lion upgrade.

  • Mac OS X Lion freezes, mouse pointer still moves, HDD still busy

Hello, I need some help with a problem on a MacBook Pro (15-inch Core 2 Duo). Mac OS X will lockup. The clock will not advance, any GUI animations will freeze. But the mouse pointer can still move, and will switch between a beach ball and the normal pointer sometimes. I can still attach to this Mac using file-sharing. Also the screen dims after while. However other things like keyboard brightness won't adjust.  This last time I noticed Spotlight was in the middle of a scan, I can still hear the HDD working. The caps lock indicator works, but keyboard commands like ctl+shift+eject (pur display to sleep) don't work.
    Remediation:
The HDD was formatted and Mac OS X 10.7.3 has been reinstalled
TechTool 5 surface scan of the HDD: passed
Apple Service Diagnostic: looped for 16hrs, all tests passed
         Apple MRI: passed
         Reset PRAM and SMU
    Upgrades/modifications:
         RAM was upgraded to 4GB
         HDD was upgraded to 750GB
The battery was removed because it had failed some time ago

I've tracked the problem down to bad VRAM, it seems that the windowserver freaked out causing all but the mouse to freeze on the display. It should be noted that in the frozen state I could still take screenshots (Command+Shift+3). The resulting .pngs were solid black.

  • PC keeps freezing but mouse still works...

So my PC keeps crashing, sometimes when I turn it on straight away, sometimes after a few minutes, very rarely it doesn't crash.
However when it crashes, my mouse still works, I can still move it around. Sometimes on Chrome for example I can still click links, but they won't load.
In other apps the PC totally crashes when I click something.
I've tried drivers, firmware updates, it's definitely not overheating. Just cannot work out what the issue is.
I've got an SSD but not had any issues from it but i'm worried it could be this or the motherboard.
The red light on the front of my PC that flashes when my PC is working just goes solid red when it crashes, and the only fix then is a hard reboot. Very frustrating, especially if i'm in the middle of something.
Anyone got any ideas or ways I can test what the issue is?
    Thank you,
    Liam.
Edit to say i'm on Windows 7.
Edit again to say i've done Chkdsk on my SSD and it seemed OK...

    After the above
I would update the SSD firmware and run windows performance recorder (if you can when you are having the problem) and it does run in win 7.
In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (Windows Performance Toolkit)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652
Help with installation (if needed) is here
When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage (if available), CPU usage, Disk IO.
If your problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)  Please configure yours as per the below snip
    Click Start
Let it run for 60 secs or more and save the file (it will show you where it is being saved and what the file is called)
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.

  • FMLE streaming @ HD, video freezing but audio still works. ??

    Hi all,
We are trying to some HD streaming using FMLE 3 and a Osprey 700HDe card.
We can get the HD input in @ 720p no worries.
Once the stream is pushed up to our CMD and embedded in the webisite we can view the video.
    Thats all ok.
It plays fine for a while and then the video freezes but the audio continues to play. It clears up after a while but its a pretty constant problem every minute or so.
We tried some suggested methods like turning of hardware acceleration in the flash player.
And even pushed the buffer out to 1 minute.
    No luck.
Its more noticeable at bitrates above 2000kbps.
We would also like to push the res and bit rate higher to deal with full 1080p.
But we would lik it to handle this lower quality first.
The processor is not running under too much stress. Around 35% and our internet is more than sufficient. 60mps down 5mps up.
    Any ideas??

I think problem is in your network conditions. Please check the RTMP buffer at FMLE. Is it increasing. You can check this from Statistics Panel at Publishing tab.
This could be due to network latency at between your client and FMS side. Please check it using Ping command. If this latency is beyond certain level then also you can also see RTMP buffer increasing and Video stalling at subsciber side
