IMac connects via ethernet fine but iBook doesn't get the wifi connection

I'm not computer literate. I'm told this has to do with the airport sharing but it looks to me like the airport sharing has to do with reading OTHER wifi connections on my iMac. I don't need that. The iMac is connected to the internet just fine. My iBook and my iPhone don't get the wifi connection that it used to get and I can't figure out why not. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
More information would be helpful. Your iMac is connected to your ISP's service with Ethernet? And you are sharing that internet connection for the iMac with other Apple devices from the iMac's AirPort card? Do I have that correct?
If so have you shared that internet connection according to Apple's protocol for doing so?
My Mac mini is connected to the internet by Ethernet cable to my ISP's gateway. I am sharing the Ethernet connection to two iPod Touches via AirPort from my Mac mini. This is how Apple says to configure a Mac to share the connection;
1. In Sys Prefs/Sharing highlight Internet Sharing (do not check the box)
2. Share the connection from: Ethernet (from the dropdown menu)
3. To computers using: AirPort (check the little box)
4. Press the button AirPort Options...
5. Name the Network
6. Use Automatic for the channel or assign a specific channel
7. Encrypt the network with one of the choices
8. For sharing with a non-Apple device; PC laptop, MP3 player, etc, you must use only a 5 alphanumeric character, 40-bit WEP password or only a 13 alphanumeric character 128-bit WEP password. That does not apply if you are setting up sharing for Apple devices only.
9. Press OK
10. Check the box for Internet Sharing
11. Answer any dialog boxes that pop up
Any other forms of configuring sharing the ethernet over AirPort ususally results in various issues.

  • File deleted on my mac by another user connected via ethernet. But file not showing up in my trash?

I have 2 imacs connected via ethernet through a router.
A file got deleted from my computer by the user on another imac but it hasnt shown up in my trash or his?
is there a way to find it?

This is normal (if somewhat unfortunate). His system should have warned him that the file would be deleted immediately instead of moved to the trash and asked him if it was OK to to do that.
You'll need to recover it from your backup disk, if you have one.

  • Airport extreme connects to router fine, but express doesn't

    Hi,
    So here is my setup:
Router -> Ethernet cable -> Airport Extreme = Wifi
This works absolutely fine. My problem is that I use an airport express to boost the extreme signal, and it's not working.
I get two errors, "Internet connection" and "No DNS Servers".
But after reading up on this, people are saying it's a problem with the communication between the express and the router.
But the airport extreme is communicating perfeclty fine with the router.
Any ideas would be very helpful,
    Thanks

I probably can't help much, but I have occasionally had the same problem. You might try going to System Preferences>Network and look at your Airport connection. See if the diagnostics can help.
    Good luck!

  • I had to move my modem and router, when I reconnected them my desktop connected fine but I can not get the iPad to connect to the internet.  It recognizes the network but won't connect to internet.

I recently had to unplug my router and modem.  When I reconnected and rest them my desktop computer connected finr but I am having trouble getting my ipad to reconnect.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    Additional things to try.
Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.

  • The airport icon (upper right portion of the screen) says I am connected to my airport; but, I don't get the icon on the Itunes window (rectangle with a triangle at the bottom of it) that allows me to select the stereo that is connected to my airport?

The airport icon (upper right portion of the screen) says I am connected to my airport; but, the Itunes window doesn't show the icon (rectangle with an arrow in it) that allows me to select the stereo system speakers that are attached to the airport.  What's up with that?

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

  • The wireless connection keeps going away and I need to power off and on the time capsule to get the wifi network up

Time Capsule wifi access very poor. it keeps disconnecting and i need to power on and off thr router to get the wifi connection back again. When it works its so slow, it works only in the roms nearby and not even upstairs in my home!

I cannot work from the serial number.. I need the model number. A1xxx in the rubber .. in the rubber.. for Gen1-3.. 2010 is probably Gen3 but can be early Gen4.
    Follow up questions:
How do i take the firmware back to 7.6.1 or 7.5.2
wireless names are Room of requirement and Leaky Cauldron - Is that too long a name?
How do I set fixed wireless channels?
Can relocate. Its in the main level of the house to give me access upstairs in the bedrooms and down in the basement,
Change firmware.. hold down option whilst clicking version.
Wireless names.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. yes.. your names are wrong.. from my point of view.. more they do not obey the rules.. no spaces.
Check C9 here why this is important.

Fix wireless channels.. option page in wireless are of utility.. you need to spend more time in the utility so you know what is there.
Location is everything.. sometimes you simply need more than one device.. wireless has limited range. Use ethernet or EOP - homeplug adapters to place another AP in area closer to your position.

  • Can't connect via ethernet after iBook wakes up from sleep

I'm running 10.4.0 on a 1.33 GHz G4 iBook. Since buying the computer in 2005, I've been connecting to the internet in various locations via AirPort, though I have hooked my iBook up to ethernet connections in the past and had no problems.
Recently I moved to a university where I must connect via ethernet, as the wireless network doesn't extend to the areas where I do most of my work. I bought a new cable. Much of the time, my connection is fine. But frequently I am unable to connect to the internet at all via ethernet, and I've noticed that it's always after I've woken the computer up from sleep. I've tried various ridiculous "kick the car and maybe it will start" techniques like unplugging the cable at both ends and waiting, restarting five or six times in a row, etc., and it starts connecting eventually, but I have NO idea why or why not. When I check my network preferences, I get the message "Built-in Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address [xxx.xxx.x.xxx]. You are connected to the Internet via Built-In Ethernet." But I'm not. What's going on here?

Sorry, meant to indicate an IP address without giving the exact numbers, and it came up as an HTTP address. My network connections system preference panel indicates a normal IP address. (And it's not self-assigned.)

  • Powerbook G4 can't connect via ethernet but connects via airport

We have a small office network connected to an Efficient Networks DSL router that's managed by our isp. The router has 4 ports and a linksys 8 port switch is connected to one of those ports. Another D-Link wireless router/switch is connected to another port.
2 i-macs connect without problem via ethernet cable. They are set to DHCP and get 192.xx private addresses. Both run 10.4.5. Another older imac running 9.2.2. also has no problems.
I recently purchased a powerbook G4 and it will not connect via ethernet to the Efficient networks router. At first it was connected to the linksys, so decided to connect it direct to the Efficient Networks router. With DHCP, it acquires a 169. internet address which is self generated (i.e. no real connection). I tried to give it a static private address (talking to the isp provider). They could see the powerbook but saw all zero's (presumable mac address). By the way the Powerbook works perfectly at home connected via ethernet cable to a D-Link router connected to a cable modem so it's not a physical problem. I even checked the ethernet cable I used in the office with another computer - no problem.
When I switch to airport in the office, the powerbook connects to the network and the internet. I get some strange warning messages showing the server's and the router's private ip addresses. I click ok, and the powerbook finds an unassigned private ip address. It's the only way it will work, but it causes problems, because I can't connect to one of the network printers. Speed also isn't great.
Can anyone give me advise how to proceed. I am no expert on this stuff so keep it as simple as possible.
    Tks

    Tim,
Thanks for your help. Here's what I've done before reading your e-mail. The D-Link DI-524 wireless router is connected to the Effiicent Neworks DSL router as you mentioned. One ethernet port of the EFF.Net. router is connected to the WAN port of the DI-514.
Because I have a D-Link router at home which works flawlessly with my powerbook, I decided to connect the ethernet cable of the powerbook to the D-Link which has 4 ethernet ports. Lo and behold, the powerbook acquired a private ip address and connected to the LAN and internet!
When I connected the powerbook direct to the Efficient Networks router, it could not communicate. I believe that there must be some software incompatibility between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router. By connecting to the D-Link, the D-Link assigned an ip address to the powerbook, and it could connect to the server, lan, etc..
Only problem is that I have a Brother network printer that cannot connect to the powerbook. My powerbook cannot find it on the network. Because there is a linksys switch connected to the efficient networks router's third ethernet port, maybe as you said, going through the D-Link via DHCP (when the Linksys is also acting as a DHCP server, might cause this type of problem. What do you think?
As a final note, other imac G5's connected to the linksys switch (which then connects to the Efficient Network's router) have no problem connecting to the lan or internet and have no problem connecting to any of the printers. When I put the powerbook on that switch, I could not connect to the internet - i.e. whether connecting via the lynksys switch or direct with the efficient networks router - same results: no internet connection whether manually or via DHCP.
So the imac G5 has no problem with the efficient networks router but the powerbook G4 hits a brick wall. The G4 likes the D-Link router. I am concerned (and I will have to check this) that if I turn off the dhcp server feature from the D-Link, that whatever software issue crops up between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router, will rise up again, because the D-Link will act like a simple switch (just like my linksys switch), and we'll be back to square zero. In any case, no harm in trying. This may be the cause of the Powerbook not seeing that Brother printer (even though it sees another printer and other macs).
Having spent hours reading about network problems, I think it's safe to say that macs have problems with certain routers. Why a G5 works and a powerbook G4 doesn't is beyond me, but clearly software must play a role.

  • IBook G4 Can't connect via Ethernet?

While we were away lightning took out several devices. Among them was the Airport Extreme Base Station and the cable modem. The modem has been replaced. I have an iMacG5 and an iBookG4 both running 10.4.11. The iMac can establish a connection via Ethernet (all this happened yesterday so I have yet to replace the Airport). The laptop apparently won't accept an IP address from the router/modem and won't connect to the internet.
I did see a message saying that my network settings had been changed by another application but don't know if this figures in the mix.
Anyone have any ideas how I ought to approach getting the iBook back online?

I think you ran across the security update bug in 10.4.11 the deals with an ethernet connection. Here is the workaround:

  • Cannot connect to iMac (OS9) via ethernet while connected to internet

I readily connect my eMac (OS X) to my iMac (OS 9) via ethernet using TCP/IP except when my internal modem is connected to the internet. In Network Port Configurations, I have ethernet at the top of the list, followed by fire wire and then the modem. It appears to search the internet.
    Any suggestions?

On the iMac, the AppleTalk Control Panel (CP) is set to connect via ethernet. The TCP/IP CP is set to connect via Ethernet, Configure manually with an IP and Router address of 192.168.168.1 and a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 The IP address shows up in the File Sharing CP which is set to use TCP/IP.
On the eMac, PPPoE is disabled and Appletalk is active. Connecting from eMac to iMac works fine when the eMac's internal modem is idle but not when it is connected to the internet.
When I try to connect from iMac to eMac while eMac is connected to internet, I see the eMac in the Chooser and can attempt to connect as either registered user or guest but then immediately get "The connection to this server has been unexpectedly broken". If the eMac is not connected to the internet, I can connect as a guest and see items in my Public folder.
I tried creating a new Location and immediately lost my internet connection.
The IP address of the iMac never changes. I do enter the IP address of the eMac's ethernet into the chooser dialogue on the iMac when attempting to connect from iMac.
