IMac constantly downloading

I'm looking at my network monitor and something is constantly downloading from the internet. Bills are through the roof and I can't figure out what the blazes it is. There is no way to isolate which process is guilty of this wanton abuse of my connection. Any suggestions? Anyone else out there had the same problem before?
Nice small screenshots here:

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey, thanks a lot. I've tried Little Snitch to no obvious avail, I wasn't able to deduce what exactly it was that was going on. In any case, while I try WaterRoof out and call my ISP, here's the log that Terminal spat out when I followed your instructions:

It dated back to August 2006, but I chopped all that off as I didn't believe it would be relevant.
Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Linc
I'm nearly in the same situation:
My Mac (Mountain Lion) is constantly downloading or uploading (!?) something, and I don't know why or what.

I have three email accounts on my iphone.  one of the accounts is now constantly downloading old emails and marking them as unread. I can I stop this from happening?

iPhone mirrors the content of your accounts. You can turn off that account by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > account > turn off mail. Then access your email account via webmail/website and delete them there. Once you turn on the account again in your iPhone it wont download them all. Otherwise to leave it downloading then mark them all read once downloaded.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

If the video is only available in a format that requires Flash player : then no.
However, a great many can also be viewed in an HTML5 version, in which case http://hoyois.github.io/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/ or similar can be set up so that Flash never runs unless you specifically choose it to.

Syncing & importing pics/videos in the camera roll are two entirely different things & have nothing to do with each other.
You can import iPhone camera roll photos/videos using any computer you want...this has nothing to do with iTunes or syncing.

Spent some time trying to find a Safari download site with no success.  I found lots of Safari sites but no Safari download site.  Where is the iMac Safari download site?

(The following does not apply to users of Lion OS 10.7 or later)
If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have) and it is misbehaving:
N.B. Never delete Safari, never run it under Rosetta, don't use proxy settings, and don't change the application's name or move it from the top level of the Applications Folder to a sub-folder.
(If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall. Alternatively you can download Safari directly:
Safari 4.1.3 for Tiger can be downloaded here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069
Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard can be downloaded from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1422
Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard can be downloaded from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070
Make sure you download the correct version for your system.
Also, observe the recommended procedure for installing software: repair permissions and close all applications, install, then repair permissions again.)
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4, Tiger 10.4.11 uses Safari 4.1.3, Leopard uses Safari 5.0.6,  and Snow Leopard uses Safari 5.1.x. If these latest versions of Safari are not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to a previous version of Safari  can have repercussions, as previous versions of Safari used a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, but if you really want to do this post back for instructions on the safe way to do so.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-ons that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet, and the dreaded CT Toolbar. If you have them, trash them, and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for the latest version of Safari on your current operating system.
You must also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates. These require a restart and a permission repair.
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    Hard Disk/Library/InputManagers
    Home/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates and updates to Safari (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
Lastly, the Safari updates require a restart of your Mac, and sometimes even a double restart is required.

  • My imac wont download apps from the app store

my imac wont download apps from the app store

There seems to be a common problem about some people not being able to download the Mavericks install from App Store but only if they have OS X 10.6.8 - seems to be a problem with the Apple servers. So you might wait a few days and see if things get better.
Is it any app you try (free and not-free) to download?
The fact that you can download apps you already have purchased means that your account (login and password) are being accepted by the app store.
Do you have a credit card setup defined on your app store account? Maybe it has expired and you need to update the cc info - you can double check if you click on the "View My Account" in the "Store" menu App Store (you have to be logged in). Then click on the "Edit" keyword after the "Payment Type" filed
You might need to contact the app store at https://www.apple.com/ca/support/mac/app-store/contact/
    good luck!

  • Svchost.exe -k netsvcs constantly downloading

I was asked to move this here from Microsoft Answers.
I am working on an XP Home SP3 computer that constantly downloads using system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. It will download as long as the computer is connected. Before I realized the problem, it downloaded 1.4GB. I am using Netbalancer to watch the process.
    Things I've tried:
    >Turn off windows auto updates. The computer was up to date last week.
    >Scan with Malwarebytes, Security Essentials, MFRT, AVG, TDDSkiller in windows and safe mode when possible. Avg found 6 corrupted google toolbar.exe in Temp files. Others found nothing.
    >Turn off system restore and rescan with AVG while the computer was connected.
    >The computer has always had Norton antivirus installed. It found and removed 1 virus in setup_lib_srf[1].exe which contained "Downloader" in 2009.
    >Disabled Backgound Intelligent Transfer service but netsvcs still downloads and the BITS service goes back to Automatic after a reboot.
    >Ran svchost.exe fix from Microsoft which is for high cpu use but thought it might help.
    > The remote ip address netsvcs is contacting belongs to Akamai Technologies when windows auto update is turned off. With auto updates on the other ip addresses belong to Microsoft.
I ran Hijackthis if you want the log.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply and help. I haven't looked for specific dll's yet but process explorer found "Mutant" files in every instance of svchost including this: Mutant    \BaseNamedObjects\SHIMLIB_LOG_MUTEX.... along with a few or several other
mutants. I hope it's ok to post the saved file from one of the svchost instances because it has obvious concerns.
I need to know if: 1.Deleting the Temp files and Temporary Internet files along with .dat files and cookies listed in the file could clean the system. 2.Is the system to compromised to try to save. It will be interesting to try though.
    Thanks, Tom

  • Has anyone any experience of the app store constantly downloading the same update?

I have recently upgraded to Yosemite, but I do not think this issue is related to the new OS.  I was rather hoping the new OS would cure the problem but it has not.  For sometime now my iMac would download the same app update twice, after the second time it seemed to be happy and would not download the app again.  But the latest iTunes update  always appears under updates and shows as being updated four times to the same version!
Very frustrating.  The screenshot shops three updates already to 12.0.1 of iTunes and it is also telling me 12.0.1. needs updating!  Anyone got any ideas about this please?

Same problem here. It is constanly downloading Aperture, iPhoto and iWork apps

  • Imac constantly freezing up

my imac (which i got in 2009) is absolutely constantly freezing up. sometimes i will be able to get to the desktop, sometimes it doesnt make it past the grey apple symbol and the loading circle, and everything in between. i experienced these problems for a while, and eventually got myself mackeeper. this cleaned up my computer quite a bit but it still continued to freeze every once and a while. it eventually went back to freezing constantly every time i turned it on. recently i got sophos antivirus which scanned it (only partially because it always froze before it could finish) and it found something seen as a threat called genieo installer, which i apparently downloaded 2 copies of last year once in may and once in august, but i looked it up and its something for a newspaper that i have no memory of downloading nor would there be a reason for me download it. after doing more research, it has apparently mysteriously appeared on other computers that had passwords, therefore protecting them, which mine didnt. even though it was not even on my computer, but on my external hard drive which i was using, i decided to wipe the entire computer clean, reinstall lion, and take only the files i needed (like my itunes library and some school documents) out of the time machine. i did this, and my computer still managed to find a way to freeze. so my questions are:
is my computer messed up beyond return?
should i wipe it clean again and get rid of the external drive?
should i take it into the apple store?
is there anything i can do (such as download a different antivirus program) to fix it?

    docdempseylwc wrote:

Then I don't understand why you are asking if you need an anti-virus program to fix it since you say you have only installed Lion and user files. How could there be malware involved. The problems you describe are rarely caused by malware and if your OS X is fully up-to-date there isn't any currently known malware that could impact it.
I think you should look for a hardware problem at this point. Using Apple Hardware Test isn't proof that you don't have a problem, but it might show something. If you still have your original hard drive, then it's over three years old and could easily be failing. Check it with SMART Utility.

  • Get error message on my iMac while downloading new IOS5 update

    Hi to all
Its very frustrating, since 1 week I'm trying to download the new software update ios5 for my iphone on my IMAC via Itunes.
Always shortly after the download, when the system unpackes the download I get the error message that the software für my Iphone got damaged
during the download (error = 1403)
I also get an error message when I want to download an normal update from apple. For example the new MacOSX Combo Update (see picture below)
    = ungültige Prüfsumme
I also tried to do the download via my windows pc and got the same error messages, which shows me that the problem cannot be on the IMAC it must have something to do with my network connection.
Can someone pls help me, I already spent 3 hours with apple care but the only thing they told me is to completely re set up my imac again and hope it works but that does not make sense when I get the same error message on my pc.
    I already :
    - reinstalled lion completley
    - reinstalled Itunes completely
    - setup a new administrator
    - checked with my internet provider whether I have outages
    - downloades other software from different providers -> works fine
    - restarted my internet modem and infrastructure several times
Only when I try to download something from the apple server I have this problems
    Many thx in advance
    Kind regards

It's possible that the hard is starting to fail. Make sure you've got it backed up just in case it stops all together.

  • I just got a new Imac, and downloaded files from my old PC. Now, when I go to Finder, I have 1500 files in an area called developer. What is this, and can they be deleted? There are also 78 files listed as Other!  Most of these files I do not recognize.

I just got a new IMac, and tried to download files from my old PC. When I go to,Finder, I have 1500 files under Developer, an 78 files under Other.
Most of these files I do not recognize. Can they be trashed? Why did they transfer? I used a flash drive for the transfer. Also, is there a way to transfer my older email files to this new computer?
Thanks for any and all help, I really need it.
    Tom

Did you use the Migration Assistant to help set up the new iMac using some of the files in the older PC? Some likely won't mean much, unless you have applications that can use or convert them. There's also a way to use the software Time Machine to import data files from an external or another computer, so you may have used that, too.
Hopefully someone with experience in a similar issue will reply...
    Good luck & happy computing!
