Imac constantly losing and searching for internet although wifi on and connected

Frenquently my iMac loses connectivity with the internet; when I run diagnostic, the wifi is on and the settings are good, but no connectivity to internet.  I then run the entire diagnostics and it will reconnect until I lose it again.  Is it possible to just delete all my previous network settings and start over; will that help.

  • TS1398 New Ipod touch 4 not connecting to internet although wifi is connected

My daughter's new Ipod touch 4 will not connect to the internet.  It previously did but now Safari is saying it is not connected to the internet - although it is connected to the wifi network fine, and my older Ipod which is sitting right next to it is working without any problem.
    Any hints?

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router.

  • IPhone4s searching for bluetooth even though it's connected.

I bought a Motorola H720. I have the iPhone4s. My phone recognizes and pairs with the device, but, when I go to bluetooth and turn it on, the phone acts like it is searching for the device even though it is connected. My question is, if I leave that screen and go back to the home screen does it stop searching?

    Yes it, it stops searching.
It is working exactly as it should.

My wifes ipad has suddenly stopped searrching for wifi connections and when our home hub is found it says unable to access ? It was working properly the other day ?

Have you tried rebooting the Hub? Unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and plug it back in again.

  • Constantly losing and rebooting airport express

Hi, I have an aiport express station that serves two g4 laptops, a printer, itunes and an intel desktop. When it works, it works fine, but I constantly (sometimes twice in one hour, often at least 3 times a day) lose my connection (disappears from the wireless network list on all computers) and I have to unplug and plug back in the airport express. That fixes it, but it's a pain.
Is this an ISP problem? Is something expiring too often and is there a way to fix it?
My airport is plugged into a linksys cable modem (have RCN service).

    heya dave,
haven't checked in on this for a bit... but seems like i came back just in time. maybe pour yourself a cup of coffee, and settle in for a read - i'll share a story with you.
i am on Rogers. when the problem started (the day i updated the firmware) i was using a Webstar high speed modem made by Scientific Atlanta. it had just been released by Rogers about a month or so before the problem started... the old modem worked fine, the Webstar worked right up until the firmware update - so i wouldn't be incline to buy into any line that it's the modem... it seems perfectly clear to me that it is/was the firmware.
i have recently changed over to the Portable Internet modem put out recently by Rogers. i am thinking it is also Scientific Atlanta, but i am too content with my connection/position on the sofa right now to check it...
i am using a MacBook Intel Core 2 - when i got it, i went a bit accessory crazy and went on several buying sprees for it. loved the idea of no longer being tied to the back rooms (where my cable comes in) so very quickly got an airport network set up. and loved the idea of Airtunes too - yup, both the express and the base station running. all worked great at first... don't remember when the Airtunes started doing the disappearing tunes trix, but from this forum i gather that was also after a firmware upgrade.
trying to putz around with that was a real treat. at one point the Express just seemed to decide it had had enough and took a couple of weeks vacation of malfunction - despite being told that the *factory settings hard reset* was infallible, for two weeks it absolutely refused to reset, despite my tring a couple of times every day. would have taken it back, but it conicided with a rush at my day-job... after downloading and printing (the base station still worked great at this point) enough paper for several first novels and hours going through it all - and coming to the same *do a facotry reset* option - i read a two- or three-paragraph reply in this forum (i think... it may have been one of the other discussion groups) that solved that one - i printed it out as well, and have amazed/amused friends: i tell them the story, show them the stax of sheets that i waded through with no answer, and then the one page sheet that actually solved that issue - by connecting the express directly to the MacBook through ethernet.
so the Express came back to life, but not without residual issues - at this point i will tell you, i have always (for 20+ years working various frontend typography systems and then into the Macs) personified the hardware... ascribing personalities and names to them. my Express is called Patrick, while the Base is named Blanche. some people think i do it to try to humanize technology, but really i do it because i like the look in people's eyes when i'm talking about them... it gives me a sort of crazy-cat-lady cachet.
anyway, when Patrick returned from the near-dead, suddenly i started having issues with the Base - i couldn't figure it out for about a week. did resets, changed channels, relocated phones, waded started to wade through the paperwork again.. found out with some admin utility or other that within range of my living room sofa there are about a dozen wireless networks all humming away. after about a week of that i found out that since coming back to life, the Express (Patrick) had decided he was the base station and kept seizing control over the network - despite not being hooked into the modem. many resets later, he seemed to learn his place again and once again began to function as an add-on acessory instead of the boss.
and then there's the printers story... i have two, a simple b/w laser for type and (at that time) an 8-colour inkjet for photo, both USB. i guess you see where that story goes. i tried to cheat and finagle, but no dice, the base was quite firm with the rule - only one USB printer allowed. i realized my options were to buy another express to service the inkjet, move the inkjet into the middle of my living room - yuk - or replace my trusty photoprinter.
got a Bluetooth inkjet, the Pixma 6600D - great, problem solved... not quite. all is good if i am in the back office, or in the hallway between the office and the front room... past the hallway, about 10-12 feet away from the office, and the Printer is out of range. but i do have a workaround... if i am in the front room, i e-mail any images i want printed to my Blackberry, and use it to send to the printer - the Blackberry took the suggested range of 33 ft. to heart.
and my Airport network... that i loved so much at for all of its modernity and convenience. Patrick the Express sits beside the stero, his green light quite happy. it is too frustrating to try to play music only to have it start gapping and evenutally grind to a halt... the Base Station Blanche remains perched high above the office on a race of metro shelving - her sole purpose in life now to relay my files to the b/w laser - although every couple of days she seems to lose the printer and i have to shut them both down and restart before she finds it again.
i actually took it into my head just after Christmas to fire it all up again - there'd been something updated or something... and i decided to try changing the channels again. Airport Admin couldn't read the configurations for either part of my Airport Network, couldn't make any adjustments to them, and in fact they both disappeared for a couple of hours after i tried.
i am thinking in the new year to see if i can install the original Airport software that came with the base station, back when it all worked and was glorious... and until i hear that an upgrade, either software or firmware is in fact an improvement, they will (knock wood) continue on that way.
for now, i am can be quite happy with Roger's portable modem. by default, i am tethered to a 12 ft. radius to it, but that's not such a hardship...

  • Many ppl Not being able to connect to internet although wifi connected.

Other forums are recieving many posts a day on this issue, and as I understand it Apple are recieving alot of calls on this issue:
    Description:
Connection to an encrypted wifi network seems succesfull, however when attempting to reach the internet Safari throws up an error - The server could not be contacted - or words to that effect. None of the Internet requiring Apps work although the wifi signal indicator shows signal indicating connection.
When you click on the little blue arrow to the right of the network connection you are connected to, in "Settings > Wifi" you see a self assigned IP Address starting 169.254 and a subnet mask 255.255.0.0, with possibly no DNS if you haven´t manually entered it and no gateway.
    Peculiarities:
1 Problem is widespread, not tied to specific make of router or AP, also it happens to most people on more than one AP or router
2 People with this problem are assigned a 169.254 IP address, Indicating no DCHP lease of an IP address
3 Ive ran a packet capture using wireshark and Air PCAP and seen no packets for a DCHP request.... wierd.. it looks like its not even requesting an IP address..
4 Only seems to happen on networks using some kind of encryption be it WEP, WPA, etc...
5 Although theres bars in the wifi icon that indicate a connection, it cannot be connected to the network, just try and ping your device when its supposedly connected, look at the IP.. it cant be on the network.
6 Even if you manually imput the IP address, sub mask, and gateway IP it still wont work.
7 People with Iphones seem to be able to circumvent this issue or a similar issue by manually selecting the encryption method or changing the encryption method on the router.
8 Issue observerd in varied firmware versions
    Possible Conclusions:
1 The Ipod is selecting the wrong kind of encryption when the enter password dialog box comes up? OR bad key negotiation between IPOD and Router.
Although scenario 1 shouldnt be the case as WPA and WPA2 have to be a certian length etc..
Note: I have tried connecting to the network by manually entering the network details and encryption under Settings > Wifi > Other and still no luck..
    Questions:
Could someone with this issue confirm 1 wheather they are using WEP encryption. 2 weather it works on a non secure router or AP. 3 weather they are imputting the full HEX key or a passphrase?
I get the feeling if you use the full hex key it may work, ive seen posts around about having to make it recognise that you are using HEX by appending a $ sign to the start of the key.. although i dont know how true this is.
I have no access to the router that dosent work for me.. so cant do tests as my home one works on all encryption methods, but ive seen about 5 Routers and AP´s so far that wont work.. all using WEP..
    NOTE
On one specific AP I connect with my Ipod and get no IP from DHCP so no internet, yet my colleague sitting right next to me with an iPhone gets a DHCP assigned IP and is surfing away no probs! it even automatically connects, and im very jealous..!
    Anyone got any ideas?

This happened to my ipod touch recently, on my own network--it worked the night before, but not the next morning (even though I had a full wireless connection on the touch). I had to 'forget' that network and re-add it (including WEP) and then I was able to re-connect. no idea why this occured, but that did the trick. So far, I've only had to do that once...

  • IPad only connects to home Wi-Fi network when iMac is on and connected????

Since I got my iPad on launch date I've had problems with the Wi-Fi connection. It can always find my home network with a strong signal, and with a bit of trial and error i have discovered that it will only connect to my home network when I switch my iMac on.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Andy

I have a similar issue with wifi. My home wifi is a strong signal but my iPad fails to automatically connect to it all the time and insists on staying on 3G. Weirdly if I go into system preferences and look at the wifi it says Not Connected, as soon as I click on it my wifi shows up and I can select it and it connects without issue and shows full strength. Why does it not auto connect ? It did when I first bought the iPad.
At work it always tries to connect to my office wifi as soon as I turn it on.

i did all the things above, but i still can't use the internet. it is connected my house's wifi, but it says "safari could not open page because the server stopped responding."

Do ther devices successfully connect to your network?
Have you tried changing the security used on the router? I would try with no security as a test.
Does the iPOd successfully connect to other networks?
Wehn you go to Settings>wifi> when IP address is assigned to the iPod?

Hey guys just a few days ago randomly my 2011 macbook pro stopped connecting to the internet. My girlfriends macbook still connects fine as well as both of our iphones and my tv. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • XP can't connect to iMac-based AirPort for Internet Sharing

(I apologize if there's already an answer to my issue out there somewhere; I promise that I searched for it before posting)
    Hello!
I have an iMac running Tiger (and connected to the internet via ethernet -> cable modem), and I want to use it as a hub for encrypted Internet Sharing. I have two other machines, an older iMac and a WinXP laptop. As you might expect, I have no problem whatsoever setting up the network and getting the old iMac to see it, connect, and so on. The XP machine can see the network, and, when encryption is off, can connect to it, but I really want to run encryption.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to run into this problem, and I have found a couple of websites that discuss it -- however, I can't seem to make it work. Does anyone out there in forum land know of a step-by-step tutorial that would cover setting up encrypted Internet Sharing (over AirPort) on an iMac so that another iMac and an XP machine can connect? Any guidance you can offer would be most welcome.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dieter

Just to give a bit of an update, I chatted with Apple support, and in essence they told me that I had to take this up with the manufacturer of my XP laptop's wireless card -- understandable, given that my old iMac works just fine on the network (so the problem really isn't on the Mac end of things).
I tried using the information at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030803030354585, but no dice, unfortunately; maybe that will work for someone else, however.
I also found out something new -- I thought my XP laptop could connect to my AirPort network when encryption was off, but I was wrong. Instead, it just says "trying to connect," but nothing ever happens. But I CAN use the XP box to connect to other wireless networks in the neighborhood (shh, don't tell). So it looks like there's a deeper issue.
Please -- I know that someone out there has an answer; I really need to be able to make this work.
    Thanks again,
    Dieter

After installing the latest updates for Mac OS X yesterday, my iMac constantly crashes and reboots. It will only boot properly in safe mode. Even when starting with command+R for recovery the kernel crashes. I have had this iMac for about 3 years and never had an issue until last night, when this problem started and it seems to have gotten worse over night. I already tried the <option><command><R><P>, but it seems that that made it worse as well.

  • 'Searching for movie data in file' glut

I had to move QuickTime (QT) files to another hard drive. Now, when I run iDVD to work on the DVD project, I am constantly bombarded with "Searching for movie data in file..." prompts. Even when burning a Disk Image. Eventually, it finds them (I haven't deleted anything). All the files under "Project Info" are checked off. It eventually stops and the iDVD Project behaves normally. But when I make another change in iDVD, it starts again.
Most of the QT movies used in the DVD are QT Reference Files, with their own links (also on the same drive). So when it's "searching" it's looking for those individual sub-movies in the QT Reference file.
Is there a way to fix this? This didn't happen before I installed the new drive and moved the files.

    Hi
Most probably it looks for the parts on the absent drive and has to search to
find them on the new on.
I don't think You can alter this in iDVD.
I think I would ease out by going back to original Mac and now either:
    • Re-set scratch disk to the new one (all 4-5 places in FCE/P) - or
    • Make new QT.mov files - but tjis time "Self-containing"
(THIS IS MY Guessing - and may be not working)
    else (bonus)
*When not knowing what to do.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.

Is their a limit to no. of devices that can connect?
Yes, this would be determined by the size of the IP pool allocated on your time capsule router. Ordinarily this should be large enough by default to accommodate the number of devices you have.
    Not sure where to check
"If DHCP is not working for you then you should check to see if your router is set to do DHCP and that MAC address filtering is not turned on"
*First, please note that if you aren't really familiar with network setup you should probably give Apple support a call and they can walk you through this.* See: http://www.apple.com/support/expert/
You can access your Time Capsule router using the Airport Utility which is found in the Applications/Utilities folder on your Macbook Pro. If you use this utility you can see how your router is setup. Post what you see here, i.e., Network name, radio mode, channel, Security password protection (WPA2 personal is best), etc. Of course, don't post any passwords.
Don't forget to check that the IP Address selector in your iPad WiFi setting for your network (which can be DHCP, BootP or Static) is set to DHCP.
I will turn Time capsule off for a while to try.
At this point it might also be a good idea to also go to Settings > General > Reset on your iPad and select "Reset Network Settings".
