IMac Core 2 Extreme = No Ethernet?

I've just installed OS X Server 10.4.7 Universal Install on a new Intel Core 2 Extreme iMac 2.8 GHz. The installation goes perfectly, as does the combo update to 10.4.10, as does the Setup Assistant.
And when it's all done, network status reports that the "Ethernet cable is not plugged in" (it is), and the configuration option for Airport has vanished entirely.
Reinstalling OS X client restores the missing functionality.
I bought this system to use a backup server, as I've two licenses. Am I missing something, or have I made a serious mistake.
Some advice would be very welcome.
Thanks,
Bryan

You guys are great… I went to bed at 3:00 am muttering obscenities to the cat, and got up at 9:00 to find answers waiting.
jaydisc, I'm chagrined... guess I've gotten too arrogant to read the directions. But they don't work for me anyhow - my Server universal installer is 10.4.7, and won't install over Client 10.4.10.
So, Adri, I followed your somewhat more diabolical procedure… with some questions and variations.
I assumed by "AppleYukon2.kext" you mean the one inside the Client IONetworkingFamily.kext package, and its associated "AppleYukon2"?
I tried renaming them one at a time, and got instllation errors at login. Repairing permissions tweaked the IONetworkingFamily.kext, but did not correct this problem.
But while Ethernet still lied through its teeth about being unplugged, Airport suddenly appeared. My wireless router just happens to have fried yesterday last night (why do these things always happen all at once?), but as several of my neighbors kindly leave their WiFi unsecured, I partook of their generosity and had the iMac run its updates.
When they were complete, I anxiously restarted, only to discover I was still allegedly "unplugged."
So I repaired permission one mo' time. I'm big on repairing permissions.
And… Voila! <happy dance>
But seriously... You've saved the day, and the week. Thanks very, very much.
Best,
Bryan

  • Lost Gigabit ethernet link on iMac Core 2 Duo

I have iMac Core 2 Duo and Linksys gigabit switch. I recently lost the ability to link at gigabit speed. I have switched and tested all cables with no problem there. I know the switch is fine because my Mac Mini still gets good gigabit link. When using automatic setting, I can get only 100baseT link. When try to manually configure to gigabit, I lose the link. I am suspecting either a hardware or driver problem has occured. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

  • Can't videochat with iMac Core Duo, can with PowerBook G4

Hi everyone. My girlfriend and I live in different time zones, so we've been using iChat (me) and AIM 5.9 (her) for the last year to videochat. My PowerBook's screen died recently, so I bought an iMac Core Duo, and all of a sudden, we can't connect anymore. Here's my setup:
    20" iMac Core Duo:
    Mac OS X 10.4.5, iChat AV 3.1.4
    Connects using wireless
    No firewall
    17" PowerBook G4 1GHz:
Mac OS X 10.4.5, iChat AV (whichever version comes with 10.4.5 for PPC)
    Connects using wireless
    No firewall
    AirPort Express:
Firmware 6.3 (tested with 6.1.1 as well)
    NAT, no port forwarding
Whenever I attempt to videochat with my girlfriend using the iMac, I get an error stating "Prachi Gauriar[me] did not respond." I browsed the discussion boards here and found the testing screen names (thanks Ralph!).
With the iMac, I can connect to Mac users, including appleu3test01, appleu3test02, and friends of mine. I cannot connect to RjinWI PC via AirPort Express (same error as above). It does work when I connect my machine directly to my cable modem.
With the PowerBook, I can connect to both Mac users and RjinWI PC via AirPort Express.
Bottom line: Using the exact same setup on my PowerBook and iMac, the PowerBook works and the iMac doesn't. I suspect this has to do with the new AirPort Extreme cards that are being used in the iMacs, but I'm not sure.
Has anyone worked around this? I'm kind of avoiding setting up port forwarding on the AirPort Express, as it's troublesome and doesn't really seem to be the problem. I'm willing to do it, but I guess I just don't expect it to work, so I'm hoping someone else has another suggestion.
20" iMac Core Duo (Early 2006)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Rj,
It seems many people are forgetting the tweaks they made to get ichat 3 to work on Tiger on Non intels when they switch.
I would check System preferences > Quicktime and set the Streaming speed to match their download.
Next I would be concerned about iChat Add-ons that are written for PCC (non Intel) code and set iChat to Open With Rosetta in the File menu and re-start iChat
    iChatUSBCam is not ready yet.
    iGlasses is.
    Showmacster seems it is not.
Lastly I would ask how the ports are opened for iChat in the Modem (or Router) IF Port Forwarding are they pointing to the old Mac ?

  • Managing Airport Extreme through Ethernet?

I have a new Airport Extreme 802.11n Access Point. It is connected to my DSL router via a 100M Ethernet connection.
All is well and I can use the Base Station without problem. The issue I am experiencing is managing the device through an iMac connected via the ethernet port on my DSL router, which I don't want to change as it is a Gig router.
I can fire up the Airport Utility from any wireless device, discover my Access Point and login to the configuration with no issues.
However, when I try the same thing on my Ethernet connected iMac, it displays the discovered Airport Extreme no problems, but when I try to manage the hardware using the Airport Utility, it times out?
Can anyone tell me what the possible issues are?
I have looked at the seetings on the Airport many times but can not identify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

  • Problem connecting switch to Airport Extreme via ethernet

I might not be in the right forum with this question, as it relates to connecting the Airport Extreme in a wired / ethernet configuration.  I am okay with the wireless functions.  This is the only forum I could find dedicated to Airport issues.
I want to provide Internet via ethernet cable to multiple devices that are 20 feet away from my Airport Extreme.  When I connect one of the LAN ports on the Extreme to a NetGear switch, I get no Internet connectivity from any of the other available ports on the switch.  I have tested the cables and they are fine, and I do get Internet connectivity if I plug the ethernet cable coming out of one of the LAN ports on the Extreme directly into a device (Bluray player) rather than go through the switch.
My setup is as follows:  Modem --> old Netgear FWAG114 wired / wireless router --> AirPort Extreme (wired connection, into the WAN port).  My iMac is connected via ethernet to the Extreme, and an HP6500 printer is connected via both ethernet and USB (is that redundant?).  I want to connect another available LAN port to the switch on the other side of the room.
A friend suggested that it may be that I need to configure the Extreme to permit multiple IP addresses to be made available through the switch, but I am not tech-savvy enough to understand if that's the issue and, if so, how to accomplish it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I am copying some of the instructions from the NetGear FWAG114 router, which lead me to believe that it is a managed switch:
    "LAN IP Address Management
By default, the [NETGEAR] router will function as a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server, providing TCP/IP configuration for all computers connected to the router's LAN.
If another device on your network will be the DHCP server, or if you will manually configure all devices, select the Disable DHCP Server option.
If the DHCP server is located on the Internet side of the router, select the Use External DHCP Server option, and specify the external DHCP IP address.
To use the router as DHCP server (the default option), select Use Router as DHCP Serveroption.
Starting IP Address: This box specifies the first of the contiguous addresses in the IP address pool. 192.168.0.2 is the default start address.
Ending IP Address: This box specifies the last of the contiguous addresses in the IP address pool. 192.168.0.51 is the default ending address."
Should I elect to have the Netgear use an external DHCP Server and let the AEBSn be the DHCP server?

  • Imac Core Duo Crashing ......A Cry For Help

I received my eagerly awaited iMac core duo 17' 160gb. I took it out of the box and it work away fine. When I was installing Norton Anti Virus the installer quit before the full install was complete. I then restarted the iMac and the welcome to OS X progress bar completes and after that all that appears is a blue screen. I do have mouse movement but no login window appears. I have tried reinstalling the OS X software from the software restore disc that came with the iMac but this did not fix the problem. I then opened disk utilty on the the software restore disk and did what first aid was available on this disk, but again no fix. I tried booting from a Disk Warrior bootable disk but this disk will not boot. Through total desperation I opened disk utilty on the restore disk and went to intialise the drive, but the drive will not erase.
All suggestions of a fix or any assistance in fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated. To say that I an frustrated, stressed and demented over this would be a understatement.
    Thanks in Advance

Last time I installed Anti-Virus on one of my Mac's. It was a terrible experience on my G5. Not to say AntiVirus is bad to install, but currently there is absolutely no reason to install one.
Really... don't waste money or cpu cycles on antivirus until there is a reason, right now there is this golden halo that protects mac from viruses. I really don't know why mac's rarely if ever have a virus, but I really don't question it either.

  • I want a new Imac Core 2 Duo how do I move my files from my PowerPC G3?

I want to get a new Imac Core 2 Duo but I can't figure out how to move my old files from my very old PowerPC G3 to a new Imac when I get it -- which I hope is very soon. The G3 has a CD drive but it is not a CD burner, has a Zip Drive, does not have firewire ports or USB ports -- how on earth can I move my stuff over to the new computer? It does have a 10baseT port [I think that's what it is] -- maybe that's the key? I hope someone can help.
    PowerPC G3 Mac OS 9.1.x

2sockeye, yes, you can use the new mac's Migration Assistant Program to help you move files etc to your new mac via a firewire connection.
Before you do that, search more on "migration" etc on this Discussion; Move only your data files (music, photos) as much as possible but do not move applications and especially system files, preferences that may or will override what's in your new Intel mac, it will cause corruption or an unstable system.
Download and install all the applications from ground up, especially 3rd party utilities etc - look for the Universal versions (either stated, or with a blue "ying yang" logo)
    Cheers
    NEW
No, when you go through the beginning of setting up your new Mac, a page with the Migration Program would appear, and ask you questions on how and what kind of migration you want to perform, it will also ask you (with given instructions) connect the 2 macs up with a firewire cable - this cable goes into your firewire ports
If you don't have a firewire port on your old computer, then search again in this Discussion and under the Support tab, whether on how to transfer data on macs without FW ports

  • Printer recommendations for iMAc Core Duo

Greetings! I need a recommendation from anyone who is successfully using a multi function printer with an iMac Core Duo. I am returning an EPSON CX5800f because the scanning driver does not work. The printer works great but the scanner does not. Any success stories? Thanks Billy D

Hello, again! I am back. I returned the EPSON today and I am looking at an HP OfficeJet 7310 for printing, faxing, and scannng on my iMac Core Duo running OS 10.4.6. Any one with good or bad experiences with the 7310? I received an email back from HP saying that the 7310 would work with Intel Macs but I see no such indication on their web site driver download page. Plus HP has not said that the scanning driver for the 7310 would work with the iMac Core Duo. Any comments? Thanks!

  • Airport extreme (gigabit ethernet) b/g not working

I have an airport extreme (gigabit ethernet)  that I use as my base in an extended network. I Have always had it in Wireless N mode with b/g compatability. the other day my speeds went from being super fast and happy to less than 1mbps. I went and plugged directly in to the airport via ethernet and got blazing fast speeds again.. I switched my radio mode to n only and wireless speeds were fast again.. switched back to b/g compatible and they are in the toilet.. is it possible for the b/g compatible antenna to just crap out?  if so this is very disoncerting as I have several wireless devices in my home that operate on b/g and don't want them to be left out in the cold.
    Any input is greatly appreciated.

what I did with the b/g testing was I changed the name of the base station to another name so none of the b/g devices that were connecting to it could.. and so it was only the laptop I was using to run the tests.. and still the speeds were terrible.. of course then when I changed it to "n" only mode they were fast again. so I know that my laptop was the only client connected wirelessly or otherwise to the base station when running both tests.
I am extending the network with an airport extreme base station dual band.  The solution I have in place currently is to basically swap them. I Have the Dual band running as the main base station in N mode with b/g compatability,  and I have the Gigabit ethernet AEBS running as the extender... so far my speeds haven't suffered at all and hopefully it will hold that way.  but I still can't understand why the AEBSn would suddenly just stop providing any kind of speed when running as the base in b/g compatibility mode.

  • External Hard Drive and iMac Core Duo

I purchased a new iMac Core Duo and also have a iMac G4.
I transferred my data from the old computer to the Core Duo with no problems. I have a Maxtor One Touch II external hard drive on the old mac. Everything transferred well including the external hard drive.... everything worked well until yesterday. Something happened, I don't know what. The Core Duo no longer recognizes my external drive, and I can't reload it. I tried to migrate all of my files from the old mac to the new, But that doesn't work anymore either. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have an awful lot of data that I really would like to have again on the new Core Duo.

I think my new iMac just fried my external Lacie d2. I kept my iphoto library on the d2 and was working in iphoto and suddenly photos started disappearing. When I rebooted, the drive was fried. Disk Utility couldn't repair it.

  • Can I buy 1 TB of space for a iMac Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz 2GB 24'' Desktop?

My brother is looking to buy this computer:
    iMac Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz 2GB 24'' Desktop
    Specs are:
    Item specifics - Apple Desktops
    Condition: Used
Processor Type: Intel Core 2 Duo
Product Family: iMac Processor Speed (per Core): 2.16 GHz
    Screen Size: 24 inches Processor
    Configuration: Dual Core
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
    Memory (RAM): 2 GB
    Primary Drive: Superdrive
    Hard Drive Capacity: 250 GB
My question is, can he add 1 terabyte of space to this computer? The seller says the Hard drive is defective so he would need to replace it, or is the real capacity up to to 250 gigs?
Also, if the drive is defective and he buys an external drive can the defective drive ever affect the external drive and how it functions?
I dont even know why he would need a terabyte of space.... but he is guy what can I say lol

As long as the replacement HD is the same physical size the capacity doesn't matter. Be aware this is an old machine (about 4 years) so I hope he is not investing too much in it. If he's spending over $500 for it I would strongly recommend he buy an Apple Refurbished iMac instead. These machines are covered by Apple's 1 year warranty and are also eligible for AppleCare. Overall a much wiser decision.
    Regards,
    Roger

    Hi there,
Your machine should be supported, the requirements for Mountain Lion are:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    You must also have:
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Also, you might like to try unplugging any external drives, and backup ones, and try again.

My internal boot drive is NOT showing up in the Event Library in Final Cut X. My external raid drive is showing up.
I am also getting error message "The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory"  when attempting to create a new "event".   Any ideas?
If I had a application disk, I would unistall and reinstall FCPX.  I am assuming there is a way do do this without a disk - just have not been able to easliy find out how.

Well it did NOT work.  Here is a screen capture as FCPX loads showing the drive while it loads. Then when it is loaded, NO drive showing up in the Event Library ( I have turned off the external drive).

  • I am linking 7 express's to an extreme via ethernet cables in very large estate. Is there a specific "backbone" you recommend for use in such an application? Thank you

I am linking 7 airport expresses to an airport extreme via ethernet cables in a large estate I maintain. Is there a specific product apple recommends to act as the "backbone" in such an application? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you

Is there a specific product apple recommends to act as the "backbone" in such an application
Apple does not recommend a specific product in this regard.
In general, you would connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Exteme to a Gigabit Ethernet switch, then connect as many Ethernet cable runs as you want to use to remote locations around the house.
Ethernet switches come in 5-port, 8-port, 16-port etc versions, so choose according to your needs.
I recommend Netgear and Cisco switches, but I am sure that there are other good products from which to choose.
Be sure to run CAT6 Ethernet cable to allow for the faster speeds coming in the next decade or so.
