Imac Core 2 vs Core i5 - which one for everyday use?

Planning to replace my current iMac with a new 27" model in the very near future. I can't decide whether to go for the 'basic' core 2 model or stump up the extra for a core i5 model (an extra £250 here in the UK).
Don't know whether anyone has experience of using both but would welcome any feedback on the relative performance in day-to-day use. I'm not into games or heavily processor intensive tasks (eg video encoding); I'll mostly just be web browsing, using iLife (iPhoto mainly), MS Office etc.
Will I notice any real performance difference? Is the extra worth it?
I intend to keep it for at least 3 years so an element of future proofing would be nice (although my current 2006 2.16 Core 2 iMac is still going strong).

I've owned both systems and trust me, the i5 is noticeably faster even on day to day stuff. You also get the better video card. Seriously, it's a no brainer, get the i5. The C2D is certainly no slouch but it doesn't compare and it's much older technology. The i5 turbo's up automatically to 3.2ghz if only one or two of the cores are in use and the memory controller is integrated into the cpu instead of the motherboard which eliminates that bottleneck as well. Macworld summed it up perfectly:
*Macworld’s buying advice*
With the new 2.66GHz Core i5 iMac and the 2.8GHz Core i7 iMac, Apple has not only blurred the line between consumer and professional systems, it's darn near erased it. The 2.66GHz Core i5 iMac offers faster performance at most tasks than the 2.66GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro. The Core i5 iMac also has more memory and more storage space than the 2.66GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro, while being $500 less (plus you get a 27-inch screen with the iMac). Unless you absolutely require additional PCI cards, multiple internal hard drives, or a lot of RAM, the Core i5 iMac makes a strong case for being the go-to system for most Mac professionals.
Cheers!

Hello there, am new here and very stressed, i have an Imac core i3 which is logging off itself after a few seconds of login, it goes back to the login menu where i put the password. I have tried to repair the os but my pioneer rom is not reading the disk. I press the :c" button on startup but its not picking up the disk in the rom, i have tried to put the disk in an external rom but same answer, am starting to think that my os disk is bad. Please help me.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Two graphics card on macbook pro which one do I use?

I have two graphics cards on my macbook pro. ADM random 6490m (256mb vram) and Intel HD graphics 3000 (512mb vram). My question is which one should I use? I don't do any hardcore gaming or photoshop. I guess that I am just looking for the best display and least buffering if that even has anything to do with the graphics card. I just want to get the most out of my macbook. I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Your MBP more or less chooses which graphics card to use automatically.  In System Preferences>Energy Saver, check Automatic graphics switching.  When it's checked on, it will use the higher power and higher quality dedicated AMD 6490 when you're plugged into the wall, and uses the Intel 3000HD when on battery.
I have downloaded gfxCardStatus to give me more control over which graphics card to use.  There are times I might want the AMD while on battery, even though it runs hotter and uses more battery life.
Either card will do well with HD movies, though I notice a lot more artifacts with the Intel 3000 when the movie has a lot of action or explosions or sounds.  If you want to do hardcore gaming, you need the AMD of course.  Photoshop is more dependent on the central processor rather than the graphics card, so I'm not sure you'd have much issue using either one.

Only you can make that determination. All things being equal the 2.5 GHz model is slower.

  • 2 Graphic cards installed, which one I am using?

Hi, I have a macbook pro with 2 graphic cards, an Intel HD graphics 3000 and a AMD Radeon HD 6750, I want to know which one am I using by default, and how can I get the best performance for use in graphics software, like photoshop cs5. Thanks

Your system will automatically switch between the integrated GPU (HD 3000) or the AMD video card (more powerful) depending on the application you are using.  There is an excellent application (free) called gfxCardStatus.  This will put a little icon in your menubar showing you which card is in use.  It will also allow you to lock in either if you choose to do so:

Can I have two versions of firefox? i.e. one for work and one for home use. I use Windows xp
I would like to start fresh with a new firefox for my work only so I can keep my work related bookmarks etc separate from my at home browsing.

Yes - are you wanting to run 2 profiles on the same machine? See https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles on how to create a new profile. You then just choose which profile you want to use each time you open Firefox.

No, it's done on the computer, it's just done on the web and not through iTunes. I guess you could do it on the iPhone, but it would be easier to do on the computer.
Just go to the site linked above, then click on the big blue button and fill out the neccessary information.

Just create a new AppleID for your work.
As Allan suggested, items purchased on one iTunes account cannot be moved to the other account.
However, you can put items purchased on on account onto the other iPhone.

  • Watch HULU on HDTV - iMac or MacBook Pro? Which one should I use?

I have this dilemma which computer would perform better on streaming video from the net. I wanna drop the cable company so I have been looking to buy a converter to HDMI with AUDIO included like this: http://www.brilliantstore.com/hdmicables_dekcell_cpa1454.html
    or like this:
    http://www.kanexlive.com/products/item.aspx?id=3495
but can't make up my mind if I should use the iMac or BMP and they have different video output (Mini-DVI/Mini Display Port). So I could use some feedback on which one you think would handle the project better (speed, resolution... etc.) or if it's make any difference at all, for specs please look below.
    Thank you!

The Imac and you don't need any converter.

  • Quadro k4000 vs GTX 760. which one for AE

I have 2 Computers and planning to mix them up together as possible. I built a PC with quadro k4000 last year because I was graduated as 3D animator and i plan to work as Animator, plus I also have another PC with GTX 760. and now I'm currently working as Video Editor. so here are my questions:
    - k4000 and gtx 760 which one would do better in AE and Pr ?
    - I read some articles said: "quadro and gtx can group up together in one PC". is it really possible ? because some people said yes and some people said no and some people said yes but wont work together blah blah. I really want to know about it, because right now I already have these 2 GPU. and if YES. can you show me how to do it?
there are my both PC specs:
    CPU: core i7 3820 3.66hz
    RAM: 16GB
    SSD 128gb
    HDD 3TB
    MotherBoard: Asus P9X79 PRO
    VGA: asus GTX 760
    Another one is:
    CPU core i7-3930K 3.20GHz
    RAM: 32GB
    SSD: 256gb
    HDD: 3TB x 2
    MotherBoard:  ASRock X79 Extreme6
    VGA: quadro k4000
Can somebody help me to build these 2 PC in just 1 PC as possible ?

I have something similar that I just posted about - my system has both a GTX780 and a Quadro K4200 installed. Eric is right. They work, but the driver installation can be tricky.
Mine is a new build and I am trying to learn how the two cards work together. I expected better performance. I don't understand why setting CUDA acceleration to only the GeForce, when NVidia allows for both CUDA GPUs. I tried every combination with no difference in results. So, I will be following your thread to see what happens.

  • Switching to Mac - which one for me?

I can't find a suitable place for this question, but my son is starting a job at a tv studio and wants a mac to get into video creation and editing. Which one should he get for this purpose? He has a pc, so he has keyboard, video and mouse. Thanks.
    pc right now   Windows XP

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
He should go for the Mac Pro. As a professional he'll appreciate the expandability in the coming months and years. iMacs are fantastic general purpose machines and ideal for home video editing but if you're doing it day-in, day-out the Mac Pro is the way to go. They don't cost a great deal more either:
    iMac
    24" LCD
    1x2.1.6GHz Merom
    1Gb RAM (3GB)
    250Gb HDD (750Gb)
    8x DVD±RW DL
    BT and Airport
    $1,999.00
    Mac Pro
23" LCD (with then option to connect up to a 30" too)
    2x2.0GHz Xeon Woodcrest
    1Gb RAM (16Gb)
    250Gb HDD (3Tb)
16x DVD±RW DL (x2 or Bluray in future)
    BT and Airport
    $3,278.00
It's fair to say that's over a thousand dollars more but when you look at the specs and the room the Mac Pro allows for the future it's a much better bet.

  • Which one better to use - jsp:useBean or import statement

    Hi,
I just want to know that which one is better to use jsp:useBean or import statement .
I can instantiate and call method of myclass -
    1) by importing the class through import tag in jsp as <%@page import="myclass"%. or
    2). by using <jsp:useBean tag....
i have these two option to do the same thing. i know that basically useBean is used to call setter and getter method of bean class and but it can be used to call a normal java file that have some logic .
so what should i used , which one is better and why?
useBean provides scope and object instance so no need to create object by new operator. and with import you have to create an instance .
but which tag should i use in my jsp?
    i am confused???

ok, means i can use jsp:useBean tag for all my
classes that are not actually bean. so it will be
instantiated at run time and provide efficiency .No. Jsp:useBean is used for java bean components.
    >
but when should i use import statement in my jsp and
it happen at translation time so will it create any
type of burden for my code if i import multiple
classes. For non-java beans, you need to import the classes, period.
    It's not a burden, it's a necessity.
