Imac core2 duo mountain lion won't recognize D key for diagnostics

I've tried everything I can thnk of to get my mac to boot diagnostics. Is there any way to get a diagnostic only bootable media? Wired or wireless keyboards make no difference. Nor does booting with the option key, selecting the CD, and pressing the D key before going on.

Tommy197944 - i have tried all 4 USB ports as well as different USB cables.   I took the drive to the Apple Store where they tried it on several different systems. iMAC running OS X 10.8.5; MACbook Pro running OS X Lion and a MACbook Pro running OS X 10.8.5.   Both MACbook Pros mounted the drive but the iMAC failed to mount the drive.  I remember a blog response saying swapping the OS X Mountain Lion's DVDPlayback.Framework file for OS X Lion's DVDPlayback.Framework might solve the issue.
It is perplexing that the exact same Samsung DVD Writer, model SE-208DC/TSWS mounts on MACbook Pro running the latest version of Mountain Lion (10.8.5).  That MACbook Pro also had an internal DVD Writer.  The Samsung DVD Writer was also tested on a MACbook Pro running Lion and it also mounted correctly.  So what did Apple change in OS X Mountain Lion that would prevent the iMAC from mounting the external Samsung DVD Writer.  The Samsung DVD Writer has no drivers for the MAC.  It depends on the OS X files.  I am trying to keep a positive attitude and hoping Apple did not change OS X Mountain Lion to prevent 3rd party external DVD Writers from mounting correctly with the new IMACs that no longer can be configured with an internal DVD Writer.
Most grateful for some proven solutions.

  • Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk.

  • Mountain Lion won't install on mid-2010 iMac with Snow Leopard

Using the same Apple ID I used to purchase Mountain Lion on my Mac Pro, I signed into the Mac App Store on my iMac and downloaded Mountain Lion with no issues.  The iMac is running 10.6.8.
When I launch the ML installer and accept the terms, the install screen appears but the Install button is greyed out as is the icon for my hard disk, Macintosh HD.  Below the OS X Mountain Lion banner it says "OS X cannot be installed on "Macintosh HD".
Snow Leopard was installed on this machine as part of a family pack and I still have the DVD.  Nothing shady going on license-wise, is I guess what I'm saying here.
Anyway, no reason is given and no options are offered other than the Back button at that point.  And I can't seem to come up with anyone having a similar issue in all my "research".  So any help or insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Doug

I recommend backing up your system, and before going into the install, checking disk utility > verify disk > macintosh hd partition > to make sure the partition is okay.
If there is anything wrong with it, you will know here. Sounds like the disk may be locked or there is an issue w/the partition "macintosh hd"
also, maybe the partition was created incorrectly... check to see if the partion is MAC OS EXTENDED JOURNALED and not case-sensetive

  • Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase harddisk and install Leopard Snow Leopard Mountain Lion. Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion

Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase the harddisk and install Leopard > Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion.
Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion?

I tried and failed for several hours to install Mountain Lion, and was repeatedly getting the "Recovery System" cannot be created error.  I tried all the tricks: resizing the drive partition, booting from an external boot drive, all to no avail.  After reading other users struggling with the same issue, I had determined it to be a boot camp drive error.  However, I didn't want to have to erase and begin anew when I came upon a possible solution.  I had long ago renamed my boot camp drive with a "." (".windows" for me) in order to avoid having the partition show up on my desktop.  So, I boot into windows and renamed the c: drive without the "." ("windows"), and reboot into os x.  The install then went off without a hitch.  I hope this will be helpful for others struggling with this issue that may have renamed their boot camp drives in a similar manner.

  • Mountain lion won't install

I have purchased Mountan Lion, it has installed on my macbook air, it downloaded to my iMac and went through the install process. iMac restarted and Mountain Lion is not on the iMac. I've checked the HD and everywhere else on the iMac and it is nowhere to be found. I'm re-downloading it again. Any help or suggestions what is going on? This is the 3rd attempt at installing it on the 27" iMac. Any by the way, after the re-start Safari does not work. It errors out.

@macjack - thanks for the suggestion on saving a copy to another drive/disk. Tho', per below, I ultimately didn't need to resort to the backup copy.
@bodysuccess - I think I found a goofy "fix"...or maybe the "right" way that is is supposed to be done on subsequent macs (who knew the other way would be "wrong").
    1) After successfully purchasing and installing Mountain Lion on your first mac...
    2) Open the App Store on your next mac
    3) DO NOT go to Purchases and "install", instead...
    4) Go to Featured or Top Charts...
    5) Locate Mountain Lion...
    6) "Buy App" again...
    7) you'll get a message that says you've already paid for it (or something like that)
    8) follow download instructions
Attempting to "repurchase" rather than "install"-from-Purchases resulted in a succesfuly install on macs #2 and #3.  Maybe a coincidence, maybe the answer?

  • My imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick

my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!

thanks for your response Csound1 on the peninsula ... if i go ahead and install maverick and then download LibreOffice or OpenOffice will i then be able to access old microsoft word saved documents on my deskstop through those two free alternatives? i am not that knowledgeable about these things so i am not sure if you are saying i will just be able to use libreoffice or openoffice for creating new documents or whether i can access the saved microsoft docs? are they transferred to OO or LO or what and if editing of the old word docs is needed can i do that through the OO and LO programs or apps (see i am not even sure if i am using the correct vocabulary!) hope you can answer this as quick as the first question, so i can decide to stick with mountain lion and trash the maverick install or proceed with maverick install and hoppe that my microsoft word docs are still accessible through OO or LO or adding to myquestion will pages on maverick be able to open the old word documents? thanks again!

  • Is there any Blu-ray Player Software compatible with my iMac OS X Mountain Lion?

I want to watch a Blu-ray Movie on my iMac(OS X Mountain Lion), so I need a best Blu-ray Player Software.

You need third party software, Macgo Blu-ray Player can deal with the work you mentioned. As for the Mac Moutain Lion(10.8), I check their website and it is said that the Mac OS 10.8 are supported.

  • HT1338 How can I upgrade to Lion?  My iMac cannot support Mountain Lion but I do not see Lion in the app store anymore.

I want to upgrade my 2006imac with 3GB ram but mountain lion requires 4gb. Can I purchase mountain lion in the app store and it will install lion or will it just charge me $20 for an OS I can't use?

A 2006 iMac cannot run Mountain Lion at all. Mountain Lion only requires 2 GB of RAM, but your model has a video controller which doesn't support features required by Mountain Lion, so Mountain Lion does not support your model. The earliest iMac which can run Lion is the mid 2007 model (aluminium body). A full list of supported models is available here.
If you attempt to buy Mountain Lion in the App Store using your 2006 iMac, the sale will not proceed and you will get an error message saying you cannot purchase Mountain Lion because it is not compatible with your computer. You will not be charged.
If you are currently running Snow Leopard and want to upgrade to Lion, but didn't already purchase Lion (e.g. for use on another computer), it is apparently possible to place a special order for Lion via a telephone call to Apple Customer Support. (I say "apparently" because there have been reports that Apple told some people this was the correct solution, but early attempts to place an order were refused with Apple Support claiming they weren't selling Lion at all. I think this was a temporary situation and it should be resolved by now.) There are links to support telephone numbers here.
Apple will charge you the standard retail price for Lion (e.g. US$29.99 in the US) and supply you with a "redeem code" for the App Store. That is entered by going to the Featured category in the toolbar, and clicking Redeem under the Quick Links heading on the right side. Once your code is redeemed, Lion will be added to the list of purchases for your Apple ID, and you can download and install it.
If you had already bought Lion for use on another computer, you can re-download it from the Purchases list in App Store, but there might be a couple of catches:
    1. Some people have found that Lion was added to their list of hidden purchases. You need to unhide it first. Do this by going to your Account page (under Quick Links, or "View My Account" under the Store menu in the menu bar). If you have hidden purchases, there will be a "View Hidden Purchases" link, and from there you can unhide Lion.
    2. If you are running Lion and want to redownload the installer on that computer, you may need to hold down the Option key when clicking on the Purchases heading in the toolbar, to enable the download button for Lion.

  • HT4245 my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.

this is a very frustrating problem
my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.
it keeps on saying that ive entered the wrong passcode.
i even have my firewall turned off
    plz help

    Ok...
So I bought my MacBook Pro second hand, and it came with no installation discs, but I got Mountain Lion and had it installed and decided to back it up to a disc in case of this scenario. I followed some instructions to make a bootable disc and used it to install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion back when I first got it.
My problem is that without the boot partition of my MacBook's hard drive it doesn't seem to want to boot the disc.
Since I didn't want to buy a disc and I don't have another MacBook or know anyone near me that does, I decided to download a hackintosh iso and use it along with my other laptop to install iPC 10.5.6....this installed successfully and my hopes were that my MacBook would be able to boot it, so I reinstalled my MacBook's hard drive and to my surprise it booted, although not normally. Since it is hackintosh it has some rewritten boot features so it's not a true OSX, but it is fully functional. Since I finally had OSX booted I figured I was in the clear and would be able to install Mountain Lion from this, but then I found out that you have to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later in order to install Mountain Lion.
Now I'm stuck with a hactintosh version of Lion and still no way to get back to Mountain Lion, is there anything I can do now that I have a functional OSX installation?
