IMac Crashed I Think

When I turn on my imac now all I get is a folder with a flashing question mark in the middle of the folder.  Please help, I don't know what to do.  I don't want to lose my valuable information.  Thank you,
Bro.Mark

  • Lion Solved iMac Crashing -- I think it might have been samba!

In case this ends up being useful to anyone else, I just thought I'd share this experience...
I bought an iMac last summer (2010) to use at work (after a long battle to get permission to do so -- my employer is a Windows-only place).
I had a strange problem where the iMac would freeze up after being left on for 2-3 days straight.
I went through multiple rounds with AppleCare reps, all of whom were incredibly patient and valiant in their efforts to help be debug the problem. We checked to see if there was bad RAM, we did a clean install of the OS, etc, but nothing we could think of would solve the problem or seemed to be the source of the problem. And given that it took several days for the crash to take place, it was really hard to troubleshoot (and also really looked like bad RAM -- one rep was sure that's what it was, and I can't blame him). I was frankly blown away by how persistent and patient the AppleCare folks were.
Throughout this process, I had a sneaking suspicion that the culprit somehow involved Active Directory, or DFS, or something along those lines (that is -- my connection to my employer's Windows-based network).
After installing Lion, I'm inclined to think that's exactly what it was. Since installing Lion I have had no crashes, and the Windows network folders are much more stable and faster.
    Yay Lion!
And even though AppleCare couldn't solve the problem (really, there's no way they could have), I still say yay AppleCare for their awesome efforts!

With Firmware updates, Apple will usually offer instructions to complete the update, since they require an additional step to complete. It sounds like you haven't finished the Firmware update completely.
Since it's your computer and investment, I wouldn't risk it and would visit your local Apple Store and let them solve the problem. In the meantime, read this link from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1557?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
...to bring you up to date on the procedure.

  • IMac Crashing; No Fixes Working/Getting a Chance to Work

Hi, this is my first time on these forums asking a question, so forgive me if I've categorised this wrong or something.
I use my iMac nearly everyday for browsing the Internet, word prossessing, digital drawing and playing Minecraft. So, personally, I don't think it is ever being put to degree of stress because I've been doing those same tasks on it for well over a year and it has run smoothly and given me no trouble. However, two days ago, I logged in and got a finder error message, which although I found odd, I simply okayed, not really taking a note of it as I in no way expected  crashing issues to arise from it. The error code started with something like -108, which I now believe was the code -10810.
So I continued using the computer after I okayed the message, only to find that Skype (which automatically opens at login) quit unexpectedly. After clicking the "reopen" button on the report,  the Skype icon bounced once, the blue light underneath appearing for a second. After this I noticed the finder report and clicked it's "reopen" button and thought it didn't work as the report was still there, but it was in fact a second report as every time I tired to open finder, I would receive a new report in mere mili-seconds. I tried other programs such as Safari and Minecraft and they all wouldn't open. Then I went to restart the computer when I noticed the Apple icon and toolbar missing. So I shut down the computer using the power button.
On reboot, things started going crazy. Booting took a while, when it loaded the desktop, it would fade to blue for a few seconds then fade back to the desktop. After a few minutes, the dark, transparent curtain moved down the screen and the message "You have to restart your computer" appeared.
I've tried numerous times to find out the problem/fix it but nothing seems to be working. Worse, the computer either crashes/freezes at login, crashes within seconds of reaching the desktop or works fine (with noticable odd things occurring [such as the screen going blue, desktop items disappearing and then reappearing] but if I try to run things that may help fix my problems (such as software update, reinstalling OS X) the computer crashes/freezes.
    What I've tired so far:
The reset (I can't remember the name) where you detach the power cable and hold down the power button for five seconds, then reattach the cable and turn on the computer. No apparent effect.
    Safe Mode:
Worked first time, however it crashed while on the desktop on second and third use, after which I haven't used it.
    Single-User Mode for fsck:
fsck ran fine, reporting that it did alter something and I had hoped that this had fixed it, but as soon as I reached the desktop, the iMac crashed.
    Software Update:
My Internet is bad enough as it is (less than 1MB/Sec, problem with living in a rural area and being on a contract until October) so I haven't been keeping up with some updates as it takes forever to download them. However,  anytime I try to update now, the computer either crashes, won't open Software Update or freezes while it goes to install the updates.
    Disk Utility:
    Found nothing wrong.
Reinstalling Mac OSX: (Via holding down C at bootup and from the disk if I reach the desktop.)
Either the computer freezes on the Apple logo and spinning gear (which usually doesn't even appear whenever I booted up the iMac) when I hold down C, or it will freeze/crash as the computer tries to restart opening the utilities panel if I run the reinstall from the desktop.
Everytime I've tried to boot the computer today (day three) has resulted in the computer staying on the Apple logo and spinning gear. So without going any further, I decided to ask this to the community because nothing seems to be working, worse being the fact that I'm just on my holidays from University and I'm pretty much lost without the computer
As for the iMac's details I'm really not sure since I generally use the "About this Mac..." feature which I can't get to now. Although I think the only important bits is that it is running on OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with no external hard drives.
I'd really appretiate any help, thanks
    Aletonum

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • My iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when Iog off an account. I looked at the Console for a log but I am not sure what I am looking for. What is the best way to try to find what is causing this?

    Hello,
I have an issue where my iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when I log my wife's account off. I'd like to get it resolved as it is very annoying. We switch between accounts all the time and everytime it crashes I lose a bunch of info from my account. Can anyone help me understand how to fix this issue?
After the reboot a window tells me that my system has recovered from a seriour issue (sounds much like Window$ to me...) and a crash report is show:

  • IMac Crashes during updating of thumbnails

My daughter's iMac 24 (8,1 from 2008) had a problem last week.  Took it to Apple.  They first said it was the HD, then said it was the video card. They called and said they could not boot from the HD, but could from external (which they couldn't do before the video card was replaced.  Asked to wipe the HD, which was fine since I have a TM back up (and a SuperDuper back-up at work).  They said not to restore everything from TM, but to only restore apps, then bring things over manually....something a possible software issue.
Fired up the iMac, brought over movies and documents.  During the process to move the photos, the iMac crashed.  Long story short, I moved the library from TM to the pictures folder today.  It took a few hours (lots of photos).  Opened iPhoto and it said it was updating thumbnails.  Before the progress bar moved, the iMac rebooted.  I reopened iPhoto and clicked "finish later" re the thumbnails.  The library opened, all the folders/albums were there, but no thumbnails.  The photos seemed fine.
I then restared iPhoto holding down option-command.  I first repaired permissions, then it went to the indexing of the thumbnails.  No progress on the status bar and the gear stopped spinning and the iMac rebooted.
Again, option-command and I tried to rebuild the database (the fourth choice on the list).  It took less than 10 seconds and the iMac rebooted.  The crash report is below.
I used iPhoto Library Manager (3rd party program) to rebuild the library as well.  That seems to have worked (it's still going).  Anyone see anything in the report that would be of concern?  I'm thinking that perhaps I have a bigger problem than the video card (perhaps a logic board issue).
    Thanks in advance.

They said not to restore everything from TM, but to only restore apps, then bring things over manually....something a possible software issue.
Not sure what this is about or what it means with reguards to iPhoto or what you did to "bring things over manually"
But the iPhoto library is a SQLite database and must always be treated as a single entity - you can not not manually resotre pieces of it and use it - you must use the Time Machine application and restore the iPhoto library intact as one single restore

  • I can't install Xcode - My iMac crashes

Until a few months ago, I had an old version of Xcode (I'm sorry, but I don't remember the version) that I downloaded from the Mac App Store. What I downloaded was like an installer for Xcode, rather than Xcode itself. When Mountain Lion came out, I tried to update to the new version of Xocde (now it was the actual Xcode that downloaded) and it downloaded as usual, but when installing, it made my iMac crash. I tried many times, making my computer crash every time, until it finally installed succesfully (honestly, I don't remember if I did something in order to install it succesfully… I think I deleted the older version, I'm not sure). After that, it worked fine and I thought the problem was solved. I had no problem whatsoever installing it in my new MacBook Air.
Today, Apple released a new update for Xcode. And the same thing as before, when it begins the installation, my iMac freezes for a second and then restarts itself. After the restart, Xcode appears "In Pause" or something like that in Launchpad. If I try to open it, I can downloading it again, but when it finishes downloading and begins the installation, it fails as I've described.
What could be the cause of this? And, of course, what can I do in order to fix it? A permanent fix, preferably.
    Thank you.

Same happening to me. I cannot complete Xcode installation because of a crash.
I cannot even run old Xcode, I get an alert about the program being upgraded.
I did a try to the direct installation via .dmg, but it ends up the same.
I suppose I am going to restore previous back up.

  • HT4848 iMac crashed, trying to use Time Machine backup. In Restore From:it only offers Macintosh HD on ..... (grayed). There are backups listed below.

iMac crashed, trying to use Time Machine backup. In Restore From:it only offers Macintosh HD on ..... (grayed). There are backups listed below. When I click on a current backup and click on continue I get a "Select a Destination" with Searching for disk, but nothing comes up.
I am connected to my Passport if that helps, but I think that is where it is getting the backup list.
Any help on how to proceed?
    Thanks,

Thanks for your help on this. I was trying to restore from a new drive. The problem I have is that Time Machine will not let me do so, so far.
When I go into 'Restore from Time Machine Back up) I can access the Time Machine HD ok. But then when I go onto next page (Select a Back Up) the 'Restore From' option only has the greyed out name of my crashed HD (this seems wrong?). If I continue the process to erase starts and then stops, message says:
An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk.
it only seems to want me to back up to my crashed HD which I have no intention of using

  • IMac crashes - emits annoying noise

My iMac crashes from time to time...recently more often.
When it does crash, it starts emitting a loud warning tone.
"3 successive tones, a pause, 3 successive tones"
    Is this a memory issue?
I've tried to run a memory checker like rember but it doesn't find any errors.  Are there any other ways to test if my memory has gone bad?
If it has gone bad, how easy will it be to replace?  Or is it something an Apple expert would need to do?
    Please help!!

    Model Name:        iMac
    Model Identifier:        iMac11,2
    Processor Name:        Intel Core i3
    Processor Speed:        3.06 GHz
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Think it was mid-2010 model.  It's 21.5''
    I've not added any memory.
Is there a reliable way to test the memory?  As I said initially, I've tried using rember but it doesn't show any errors.

Both Memory Clean and Clean My Mac could have cause the damage which triggered the kp.
I would back up your Mac, erase and reinstall. Then Migrate your user data from the backup.
Uninstalling Tuxera is a troubleshooting process. You don't have to keep it uinstalled, just long enough to test to see if it is causing the problems.
However, if it doesn't happen regularly, it would be hard to determine if it was the cause.  And, as I mentioned, I don't think it would be the cause.

  • Intel iMac crashes everytime using the external modem

The brandnew iMac crashes everytime when I try to connect to the Internet via the Apple USB modem. I exchanged it already thinking it was broke. The connection via Ethernet and DSL workes fine.
    Any ideaß

This is a duplicate of "New Intel iMac freezes at connection to internet via USB Modem".

  • IMac crashes when unmounting its volume

I have an Intel iMac (education version) and I connect to it over the network to retrieve files on occasion (from my Powerbook). When I'm on my PowerBook and I unmount the iMac drive in the finder, then my iMac crashes and must be rebooted. I'm at a loss to figure out why? I'm running the latest version of OS X (10.4.8) on both computers. I think the issue may be that the computer is connected to one network by ethernet and another by airport. Anyone else have the same problem?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Sorry, but you're rambling here. Could you please explain first what is connected to what by which protocol and then the sequence of what you do which results in the crash?

I'm very far from being expert at reading crash reports, but I don't think this is a kernel panic. I'm not seeing any signs of a KP in the logs. The following is basically some guesswork on my part and I might be completely wrong, but it may be worth thinking about.
In your crash report I'm seeing the process which seems to be responsible for the crash is BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Process: CFD 196
    Path: /Users/judybarnett/Library/Application Support/BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Identifier: CFD
    Version: ??? (34766848)
    Code Type: PPC (Translated)
Here is what I've found from searching BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD.
+5. BROADJUMP CLIENT FOUNDATION: During your use or installation of+
+the overall Licensed Software, the BroadJump Client Foundation+
+("CFD.exe") may be installed on your computer. The BroadJump Client+
+Foundation is a small application that facilitates communications+
+between the client software on your computer and your IAP's servers+
+that manage these applications. The BroadJump Client Foundation+
+periodically queries BroadJump or your IAP's servers for one or more+
+of the following reasons (a) to upload the subscriber registration+
+information that is collected at installation, or (b) to check for+
+available updates to your broadband access and support software or+
+messages from your IAP, or (c) for authentication to your IAP's servers for certain application communications.+
This is apparently some kind of software installed -- or which was possibly installed at some time in the past -- by your ISP (or possibly a former ISP.)
    Path: /Users/judybarnett/Library/Application Support/BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
The above means this is caused by "the thread trying to write to read only memory," and is always caused by an attempt to access some data. I'm also seeing that it was running under Rosetta, which is a translator for PPC Applications so they can be run under Intel, which is what your computer is now. My hypothesis, then, is that BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD might be something you migrated from another PPC Mac when you got your current one, and it, or running it under Rosetta, may be making things unstable. You said this has been happening off and on since you got the new Mac. So, the question is did you use Migration Assistant to move things over from another computer and was that a PPC Mac? If not, that probably blows my theory completely out of the water. However, I would still want to understand what BroadJump is doing on your computer and why it is running under Rosetta.
If yes, my first instinct would be to uninstall BroadJump. But first, I would contact your ISP and ask them if it is a necessary part of the functioning of your Internet service. If so, there may be an Intel version they can supply or they can recommend a proper course of action.

  • IMac crashing, loud speaker sound followed by 3 beeps

    Hi,
For the past few months my iMac crashes at random.  The entire system will freeze and it is then followed by a
"Crrrshhh CRSHHH CHHIIII" screeching high pitched sound from the speakers.
When I updated, this is now followed by 3 beeps.
I've searched about it being bad RAM or whatever, but I only got this Mac last October.
I don't think it registers as an error either, when I boot up again there is no mention of it.
I'm thinking about maybe upgrading to Lion if that will help?  I'm not sure.
I'm also worried that it messes up the other hardware as that crunching crash sound can't be good.
I've pinpointed when it does actually seem to happen.
It seems any time I'm watching streaming content on the web, then I can usually expect a crash.  I've not noticed it outside of that.
    Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Despite your conclusions, this condition indicates bad RAM. Step one is to run the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests. If the machine passes, then download and run Rember. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3004633?start=0&tstart=0 for more details.

  • Imac crashed and will not boot up

So my iMac crashed and will not boot. The power will come on and when it switches to the boot sequence it powers off.  I bought Black Tie protection at Best Buy but when I took it to them they shipped it to Apple. The problem was never fixed. Apple said it was a software issue to reload the OS. Well i did that and not even a day went by and it is doing the same thing. Any suggestions would be helpful...

I agree with BGreg that you should run Apple Hardware Test , however run it in Extended Mode. If no errors turn up run it several times. It's a lengthy test so be patient. Also here is what Apple says about your symptoms in Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup.
I hope you have been backing up your system, if not then if you can boot into Safe Mode as suggested you should immediately backup using either a clone or Time Machine. That should be the #1 priority to preserve your data.

  • I have a Power PC G4 which is running on OSX 10.5.8, it has the AirPort utility but cannot connect to the internet as my iMac can, I think I might need an AirPort Card? Is that the case or do I need something different to connect to a wireless modem?

    Welcome!
Only one variant of the PowerMac G4 could use the faster Airport Extreme Card. The rest used the original Airport card that is pretty slow.
To get fast wireless without buying more than one thing, consider this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Edimax/EW7722IN/
It goes in an available PCI slot
There are USB solutions also. However, all PowerMac G4 towers had only slower USB 1.1 ports, so any USB wireless adaptor can only run at about wireless 'B" speeds (slow) unless you also install a PCI USB 2.0 adaptor card. Doing that would allow a USB wireless adaptor to run at its maximum rated speed. These items working together would accomplish that:
    USB wireless "dongle:"
Newer Technology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b USB Adapter + Plug and play direct or with extension cradle
    USB PCI adaptor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Ntk=Primary&Ns=P_Popularity%7c1&Ne=5 000&N=7069&Ntt=USB+PCI
Each approach has its advantages. The PCI wireless card is a one-piece solution that takes up no desk space. The USB2 card+USB2 Dongle gives you more fast ports for transferring date from other external USB devices (primarily cameras and external hard drives) at hugely faster rates than can the original ports. I have a USB 2 PCI card in my G4 tower strictly for transferring images from my digital SLR camera in a timely manner.
