Imac crashes after 3 weeks!!!!  White screen of death-- Hard Drive died!??

Good day fellow Apple-minded,
bought my missus a 27" Imac with a 1TB hard drive in the mighty United of States, just the other day.
I have become quite an Apple fan recently........mainly based on the high reliability compared to the products from Bill Gates and his henchmen.
HOWEVER, I was less impressed when the white "screen of death" appeared the other day while trying to boot up. It was night, so I spent a good few hours in this forum, trying to look for a solution.........before finally surrendering to bed.
The next morning to the Mac-doctor and he confirmed--> the Hard Drive--> R.I.P.
After 3 weeks only!!
Luckily it will be changed under warranty etc, but still--> my question is: how common is this for the Imac?????
FYI: I flew the Imac out of the States, checking it in at the airline desk--> booboo??
Thanks,
MXP 150 Patriot

IMO, mere coincidence. Mechanical and electrical things break. When, no one knows. For HDs, normally within the first couple of months and then years later at their end of life. Since it's being replace under warranty, don't worry.

  • White Screen of death / Hard drive not showing up on my MacBook

So i get this white screen whenever I boot up my Macbook, and this recently happened. I've been reading a bunch throughout this site and others alike, and seems like this tends to happen often after playing with Boot Camp.
I do recall messing with Bootcamp settings yesterday, and then today while I was working on something, my computer suddenly froze. I had to do a hard crash (held down the power button) and then when I restarted, my computer started giving me the white screen. I am not getting the Apple logo or the spinny wheel. I just hear the ticking/beeping sounds and thats it. I found this other post
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6635935&#6635935
and I felt like it was exactly my situation, so I followed the procedure about putting in the leopard installation disk and going to disk utility. When I put the disk in, it took VERY long to actually detect the disk and then it showed me some progress and I got the boot from disk icon. I clicked that and went into Disk Utility as stated in the discussion, and I only saw the dvd drive listed in there. When I tried to just install the OS again, on the install to location page, there was no hard drive icon. I am freaking out because all my photography is on this computer atleast from the last couple of weeks that has no backup so far!
Does this mean that all my data is LOST? That would really suck!
Any help is appreciated and a Mac Newbie would really be thankful!
Looking forward to some responses as soon as possible because I really need some of the stuff from that computer, and just can't afford to have the data lost!
Is there any way to remove the macbook hard drive and put it in an external casing to just access it from another computer so I can back up all the data, and then just erase everything. I usually do that whenever my windows computers have problems! Thank you in advance

    I love my macbook!!!! wrote:
I don't suggest you take the disk the out by yourself. You could damage the whole system and you might have to by a new one.
I have to address this - removing the Macbook hard drive is not only remarkably easy, it's also perfectly allowed under the Apple warranty, and in fact Apple gives you step-by-step instructions here:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inch_HardDriveDIY.pdf
If you didn't get any help at the Store, your idea of putting the drive into an external case is definitely a good step I'd try to get the files to another Mac. (Note that a PC won't be able to read the Mac's drive unless you have MacDrive installed.)

  • We bought a reconditioned IMac and time capsule, about a month ago the hard drive died and only left our files on the capsule which could not be retrieved from the time capsule so it got stored as a file on the operating system

Our IMac's hard drive died and we thought great we bought a time capsule to back up the immages and files, except when we had the hard drive replaced the time capsule did not recognize the newer opperating system and would not reboot the files back,so the apple store tech loaded them into a file folder and loaded them to the main screen and erased the time capsule, the problem now is how to load this file back permenantly and watch video's that are stored, when in I Photo when I try to view video content I get a message stating that I may need to download more software to support this format.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Imac crashes often and has slow load time. (maybe hard drive problems)

Ok, I'm currently using an Imac G5 17" with 2 gigs of ram. (one dimm from a third party)
Some times my I mac works fine, often times The computer will freeze up for 3 to 10 minutes or become completely frozen where I have to physically turn the computer off.
This happens randomly using various applications ( i tunes/ arkaos vj, word, photo shop) I will see the spinning color wheel (as if it's thinking) and sometimes there is a clicking sound coming from within the computer.
(if you take a one of those clicking ice tea caps and push down on it and then let go. You'll hear the sound that my computer is making. except it continues to make that sound for a few minutes or so.
I have had external hard drives that have made a similar clicking sound before they died. leading me to believe that the hard drive is going bad.
I was curious if any one else has ran into this problem or might know what is causing it.
    thanks!!

Please back up your data ASAP! Your drive is dying and you should make a clone of your system (I use SuperDuper!) before it gives up the ghost entirely. Use a firewire external to clone to, then, when you get a new drive, you can simply reverse clone the data onto it and you'll be up and running.

  • White Screen Of Death-Did all the key hold downs

    Hello,
After the spinning beach ball of death today, the Imac is now in the White screen of death mode. I did power off, command option , p r keys with two chimes. I did the c key hold down. I tried the tech tool deluxe disc. I tried the power off only. I have unplugged and let it sit. Is there any thing else I can do?
    Thank You!

Sorry, Kenichi, your post wasn't there a minute ago:(
    +did not work+
Assuming you can get the Install Disc into the optical drive - with it already in the optical drive, then you power-up while holding down and continuing to hold down the c key (it's small case, so cap's lock off) until you see a spinning dial on the white screen (at that point you can release the c key) - how far does it get while trying to accomplish this?
Does it do anything at all? Make any noise? Power light on or flashing? Do you ever get to hear the Mac startup "gong" sound? or see the spinning dial?
The following article provides the startup sequence you might witness:

  • White screen of death - iMac OSX Lion

I upgraded my 2007 iMac to Lion and after a few days of perfect running the think locked up.  When I forced the power off and back on it seemed to be booting fine (chimes, apple logo, disk spinning up and I could hear the drive head seeking) but then it froze up in the "White Screen of death" (WSOD).  It was complete lockd up again, and nothing would bring it back.  I had to reboot again.  And again.  Everytime it seems to be ok, but then locks up after it the screen goes white. . I did command option , p r keys with three chimes. I have unplugged it and let it sit.  I disconnected all periferals.  I reset the SMC.  I booted into Single User mode and used unix commands to check the HD.  No errors found.  I disconnected my wireless Time Capsule.
Note that it appears to be booting fine at first with the useaul Apple Logo.  And when I boot into the Single User mode all the text indicates no faults.  The display and HD appear fine.
I inserted my original OSX Leopard disk and and tried to boot from it, using the "C" boot process and the Option boot method to manuualy select the DVD.  No good.  It just went into the WSOD again.
I have no idea what to try next!

    RATS!
After ersing (and zeroing) out the HD nothing changed.  I still could not completely boot up the install disk.  I tried the original Leopard disk, and the Apple Lion USB thumbdrive.  Both started the boot process, and gave me the grey Apple logo.  But then after a minute or two jumped into the White Screen of Death.
I then replace both RAM chips.  No change.
Now I have a brick.  A very large and heavy brick.
But the computer will woerk as Target Disk Mode, and it actually goes through a normal boot cycle.  That is, I can go into the Single Ud=ser mode and all UNIX command work fine.
Does anyone have any additional ideas of what can cause this?

  • IMac 27" white screen of death

    Hello.
I've recently changed HDD in my iMac to OCZ Vertex 2 SSD in a local Apple service. Everything was OK until today. I woke up my iMac from Sleep, it showed the beachball and became frozen and unresponsive. I pressed Power button to switch it off. After that I've pressed Power button again to switch it back on. But... all I could see was a White Screen.
iMac doesn't react on pressing "C", "Shift", "D", "ALT" and other combinations that could help me. I even can't boot using Install Disk. All I can see is a White Screen of Death.
What are the suggestions to my issue?
I'd like to hear any help.

Well, I'm sure that the Apple service who performed the work would have a warranty? I would be contacting them immediately and tell them to fix the problem without cost to you.

  • Help needed-white screen of death while attempting to migrated files from imac to macbook

Using the migration program on my macbook (about a month old), I rebooted my imac (about a year old) while pressing down the 't' key.  Instead of rebooting and bringing up the firewire symbol, I got the white screen of death.  Thankfully, I have gotten the imac working again (except I can't get it to recognize my wireless mouse)…but am afraid to try the migration app again for fear of having the same problem and doing irreperable damage......any suggestions for what went wrong the first time and what I should do differently?  Also, any ideas on how to get it to recongize my mouse? It has recongized my keyboard with no issue.

    Download at www.memtestosx.org
Power on your MBP while holding down the Command and S keys to force Mac OS X to boot into Single User Mode. Once you see a black screen with white text, you can release the key combination. After all the system logging is done scrolling past, type 'memtest all 2' (without the quotes) to test all memory two times. Two passes should be enough to detect any blatant problems, but I wouldn’t hesitate to let it run for hours on end if I suspected an intermittent memory problem (memtest all). When complete, you should be greeted with “All tests passed” if your RAM is in good condition. If your system locks up or freezes indefinitely during the test, you may have a bad memory module on your hands.

  • Since updating the software on my iPhone 3gs it has developed the so called "white screen of death". The phone has not been dropped or damaged in anyway, the problem only developed after software upgrade. Rung apple and they were less than helpful

since updating my iphone 3gs software it has developed the so called "white screen of death" this happened immediately after software install. It has never been dropped or damaged. I have tried the solution which seems to pop up most of holding down the power button and the home button for 10 seconds but this hasnt helped at all. Tried ringing apple, who were less than helpful and disinterested as the phone is out of warranty. I am hoping there is a solution which doesnt mean shelling out for a new phone! any ideas?

Basics from the manual are restart, reset, restore.
    Try all of these.
    If these fail, then:
iOS: Unable to update or restore

  • White Screen of Death (after restoring)

Guys, I've been dealing with the White Screen of Death, but it was always solved by turning it off/on, or restarting it.
The white screen used to happen when leaving my iPod for 3 days without using it.
However this time, 4 days passed without touching it, and I can't make it work.
I tried restoring it from a recent backup without success.
    What could I do?
Is it hardware or software problem?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Having an intermittent issue where my iMac blanks out on me. On restarting I get several bands running down the screen with pixels jumping around within the bands, then the white screen of death and nothing... This happens intermittently and usually restarts OK. Happened again three days ago and wouldn't restart for two days (again the bands/pixels etc) but now operating fine? Any ideas whats wrong with my iMac and what the solution may be? Also gets very hot from time to time, particularly if I'm playing music/watching youtube/movies for extended periods. Mac is 3.5 years old, running OS X 10.6.8, processor 3.4 GHz i7 memory 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US.

  • White screen of death after 3 mins of usage

Hiyah, so my iphone got the so called "White screen of death" after 3 minutes of usage, i've tried restore and all of that but without success.
    What should i do?
Send it in for repair? (seems really ridicilous if have to since it was bought the same day)
    or
Take it back to the store where i bought it and ask for a new one?
Thanks in advance, oh yeah.. i live in Sweden.

Standard troubleshooting steps in the following order:
    1. Reset: Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the apple logo, then release. Ignore the slide to power off.
    If no change, continue:
    2. Restore your phone from your most recent backup, Note, however: if the problem is related to corrupt data in your phone's backup, while this will restore a fresh OS, it will also restore the problem.
    If no change, continue:
    3. Restore as a "new" phone in itunes & re-sync your content. All saved data will be lost.
If no change, make an appointment at an Apple store, as you most likely have a hardware problem. There are no more user troubleshooting steps available.
