IMac crashes after hitting escape in Capture

After I finish capturing a clip (using a Canon HV-30 camera) I hit escape and then immediately my mac crashes. I try to restore and the all the files in my browser have a red diagonal slash through them. Going to my scratch disk on my external drive I look inside of the Capture Scratch folder and most of the files are grayed out so the locate and choose button doesn't do any good. Two questions -- I have 4 GB of RAM but the machine still crashes -- is there a workaround to this? Second question -- what is the best way to restore from auto vault save? Thanks for any help.

What kind of external drive are you using?
The reconnect function only looks for one clip at a time. It is looking for an exact file name in your capture. What is the name of the file and where is it located?
Use the restore function in the File menu.

  • Why does my iMac crash after installing ios lion?

I bought my iMac 21 in 2010 and it crashes due to the lion softeware. It's not a Kernal Panic crash but after I leave it on for awhile the wireless keyboard and mouse are frozen, I can't even wake it up after hitting the space bar. Is there a setting in Lion that turns off the bluetooth after awhile? How can I fix it?

I would reinstall Lion, preferably from scratch if possible.
Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer and Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • 20 inch Aluminum iMac crashes after installing Mac OS X Combo Update 10.5.6

I have a school lab with 22 of the new 20 inch Aluminum iMacs. They all have been having a problem with crashing after someone logs onto my network server, which is still running the 10.4 Tiger version of the Apple server. They run fine if you boot up and log on as a local user, and they seem to run fine when you boot up and log on to with a server account, but when you log off from the server, about five seconds later while the aurora screen is still showing, they crash and give you the Apple version of the "blue screen of death."
I was told that the fix was to download the combo update separately from the Apple website and use that to reinstall and update the operating system.
I downloaded and tried installing with a 10.5.6.dmg file and a 10.5.6.dmg.smi file, but they both crashed.
Where can I find the "fixed" version of this update or is there some other fix?
I have tested this on 9 or 10 different systems.
The first file was MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg, which is a disk image file that is 668.8 MB or 684,774 KB.
I looked in the discussion groups on the Apple web site and found some discussions for problems that seemed similar to, but not quite the same as my own. They led me to a file MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg.smi, which a self mounting image file that is also 668.8 MB. I tried it and got the same result.
I can install my dvd, which gives me 10.5.1, which will log off and reboot correctly.
I can then install several miscellaneous upgrades:
    Pro Apps Update 2006-02 V1.0
    AirPort Utility V5.3.2
    Remote Desktop Client V3.2.2
    QuickTime V7.6
    iTunes V8.0.2
    and also
    Front Row V2.1.6
The system will then log onto the network, log off and reboot correctly.
But, when I install the 10.5.6 combo update from any of my sources, it boots and logs on fine. But, if I log onto the network, it crashes when I log off.
Where do I go from here?
    Thanks for your help.
    John R H

Have you tried starting up with your install disk and doing a disk repair?
Put the install disk that came with the Mac in the DVD/CD drive and restart holding down the 'C' key. You can take your finger off once you hear it making noises from the DVD/CD drive. You'll be presented with a screen where you choose your language. At the next screen on the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility you then select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If it makes any changes click on 'repair disk' again and repeat the process until you get a clean pass. Once done select restart from the Apple menu and hopefully the Mac will boot normally.

  • IMac crashes after waking from sleep

    Hi Guys,
Ok I recently updated my intel iMac and since then whenever I put my iMac to sleep using the power button on the back, it crashed after waking it.
The screen shows the cursor on a black background (my desktop is not visible) and I cannot move the mouse or do anything but reset it.
Any ideas how to resolve this?

My laptop crashed daily from the first day for about 7 months until I did these. After that no crashes:
    1. Reset PRAM:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/26871.html
Check that you hear the Apple beep at reboot.
    2. The crash is due to com.apple.ReportCrash.Self who is looking for his plist file in another directory where it is... Basically some app crashes and com.apple.ReportCrash.Self is invoked, but it is not ready and crashes the system ... (symptoms after coming up from sleep: black/white noise display, dead display, app crash followed by system crash, freezing, etc)
    The fix is here:
    http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=192563
or below (the directories may not be exact):
"Tired of seeing this error in your system.log?
com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[80] (com.apple.ReportCrash): Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self
Well here's a quick and simple fix...
    Navigate to: System>Library>LaunchAgents>com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist
    Copy the file: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist
    Navigate to: Users/Home/Library
Create a new folder in Library titled: LaunchAgents
    Paste: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist in LaunchAgents
    Delete the original: System>Library>LaunchAgents>com.apple.ReportCrash.Self.Plist
    3. Reboot.

  • IMac crashing after dropping external HD

Whilst my 2008 intel iMac was running today I knocked my my book studio external hd off the desk. The external hard drive made lots of bad noises and I disconnected it. However my iMac is now intermittently crashing after about ten minutes or so of running fine, the screen goes a patchy grey mottled pattern. I have to do a hard shut down to restart.
Can anyone point me in the direction of what I should or shouldn't do at this point. Could it be time machine crashing the iMac now the hd is disconnected or a FireWire issue? Obviously I'm concerned as I don't want to damage the iMac hard drive as well.
    Many thanks

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • IMac Crash after Updating to 10.6.8

Hello.  I have a 24" iMac that was working fine until I updated to 10.6.8.  Immediately after updating it crashed and gave me the power off box in the center.  After doing that several times I also got "the gray veil of death" that scrolled down slowly and then my screen was solid gray except for a multi-line message in the upper left (looked like old DOS).  It had a mixture of messages and code (i.e. 00x589045, etc.).  Occasionally it would have a variety of messages.  After rebooting repeatedly I finally got my system back.  Then I backed it up using Timemachine.  After I rebooted it started all over.  My peripherals were the standard wireless apple keyboard and a Logitech wireless mouse (USB Wireless) but nothing spectacular.  During the reboot sequence I'd get the message to send to Apple, then the next one reporting the issue.  About 30 seconds later I'd get the gray veil of death again and the power down and reboot command.
I call Apple support today and reloaded the Snow Leapard system.  Everything seemed fine, backed up again just to be sure, then started updating the system again.  Whole thing started all over again.  Now I can't even get it to boot up once properly.  I'll probably end up taking it in, but was wondering if anyone else had the same issue and what they did to resolve it.  Haven't found an update released for the recent update, so now I'm stuck until I exchange it or they fix it.
Again, thanks for help if you're familiar with this problem specifically after the 10.6.8 update.

Thank you for the input.  I really appreciate the help.  I downloaded the Bluetooth update and tried it.  I've pretty much isolated it to the Bluetooth or wireless mouse functions, as both of them cause the gray screen drop and crash.  The update didn't fix it but at least I'm narrowing it down.

  • New iMac crashing after Lion and SN updates

Well this is my story bought my new imac Jan 2011 - Snow leopard 10.6.4 installed - worked fine problems started after upgrades to 10.6.5 and 10.6.6 - wifi probs initially then a tendency to crash to black screen about twice a day - just a little click noise then nothing often when surfing.... anyway endured this prob and thought upgrading to Lion might fix it...
After installing Lion my new imac ran for 2 mins max before crashing to black screen - I went online and tried all 'known' fixes (no help) - I am now back to 10.6.4 and have had a trouble free day ....been using macs since 1993 and never recall a prob as bad as this - still have a Blueberry imac running OSX beta (lol changed the clock) and Emac running 10.2

Also as a general rule of thumb NEVER NEVER EVER EVER  upgrade a computer that isn't 100% stable at the time of the upgrade. When you do you are NOT fixing a problem you are making the problem much more difficult to troubleshoot and fix. You may benefit by reading Understanding upgrade nightmares, this should help explain and possibly shed some light on your problems. My iMac has successfully upgraded over many many updates including major OS X upgrades from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard and now Lion. In each case the migration was simple and the computer remains as reliable as it did when it was new. This is primarily because the computer was stable on each upgrade.
My recommendation would be to start all over again with the base version of OS X that was installed on your system. Do an erase and install and only upgrade to the next version of OS X when the system is 100% stable. WZZ wrote a good guide on the process he does when he upgrades, I do something very similar and as explained each update has been very smooth. Please read his Update Process.

  • IMac crashing after Mavericks

My iMac ran immaculately piror to upgrading to Mavericks.  Immediately after the upgrade it started acting up.  First it wouldn't wake from sleep.  I'd have to manually power off then power on after long periods of no use.  Then it started crashing.  I'd hear it restart in the middle of the night.  Sometimes it would be awake in the morning.  Other times it would just be a blank white light.  Restarting worked for a while.  Then occasionally restarting wouldn't work.  It would boot through the Apple sign and just stay on a white screen.  It got to the point where it didn't boot all the way on most attempts.  Sometimes the screen would be white.  Other times the screen would be blue with vertical white lines or white with vertical black lines.  I tried to repair disk, reset PRAM, all the steps you're supposed to take when you're Mac is acting up.  Nothing worked.  It wouldn't even let me enter Hardware test.  So as a last ditch effort before driving forty miles to an Apple Store and losing my machine and my source of money for a week or so I tried a full system delete and reinstall of Mavericks.  The issues continued but I was at least able to run Hardware Test.  Hardware Test showed a bad Ram card.  I isolated the bad Ram card, removed it and it worked great for two days.  Today I came home to a white screen.  Tried restarting and it didn't boot four times.  Ran Hardware Test again and it came back with no problems.  After the Hardware Test I rebooted and here I am.  I'm certain it's going to happen again.  Why is this happening and how can I fix it?  Please help.  Really don't want to lose my machine for a week.
    Thanks
    Shawn

Are both RAM cards original or otherwise obtained from the same vendor? It would be unlikely for only one to fail, and OS X upgrades often reveal marginal RAM.
AHT doesn't always identify bad RAM. Nothing can, other than to test it while installed in specialized test equipment. Substitution is the only troubleshooting method available to the user.

  • IMac Crashes after reinstalling new O/S

    Hello
After 3 years of great use my iMac 24 inch suddenly crashed, well theres always a first time, on restart I had either a grey screen, or a circle with a bar through it. Tried restart with Shift Key Pressed, same issue, restarted cmd-s no response. Reset the Pram several times no dice. Started from Install DVD tried DIsk Utilities, repaired disk, but message appeared in red said 'could not unmount disk', then coloured wheel appeared, spinning continuously, had to turn off Mac and restart with Install DVD again.
Decided to erase hard disk, this worked, installed new O/S and restarted. Now Mac was running Incredibly slowly, to rename a folder took about 5 mins, and then coloured wheel appeared - spinning continuously. Restarted again - grey screen, restarted from Install DVD tried DIsk Utilities, repair disk, fine, but repair disk permissions failed, coloured wheel spinning continuously, Mac stalled.
Decided to erase hard disk again using reset to Zeros (7 pass erase) after a few hours - success, installed fresh O/S, restarted again, fine. But again Mac is running Incredibly slowly, to copy a blank folder takes about 5 mins, and then coloured wheel appears and Mac stalls.
Restarted Mac using Hardware test, ran test, after about half an hour said hardware is fine!
On restarting again, grey screen with a circle with and bar through it again - Whaaat!
Whats happening, never encountered this before, could it be a Hardware problem, an intermittent faulty hard disk perhaps? The iMac does get hot after a while, could temperature be an issue?
    Please can anybody help

A 24 inch iMac is an Intel-based iMac. This area is for the much older iMac G4. You should post your question in the Intel-based iMac discussion area.

  • Whenever I open Mail.app, my iMac crashes after a while.

    Hi guys,
whenever I open Mail.app on my iMac (Mid 2010, OSX 10.8.2) crashes like I suddenly lost power. Did anyone expirience such a problem before? The iMac runs fine, currently I'm using Thunderbird without problems.
    What I alread did:
    - Reinstall OS
    Best regrads,
    Tobias

Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to find what actually caused the issue. Especially if it has been fixed now.
If you did a Migration, it would only transfer user data settings and files over. From what i can understand the reason why the Mac switched off was just a fluke, that in result caused the issue with Mail.
What i would suggest, if the enviroment you live in is dusty, is to try and benchmark the Mac with any benchmarking application. It might have been caused by overheating. If the Mac reaches to a point where it switches off, it would be best to go to an Apple Retail Store, or an Service provider, to get it cleaned from all the dust.
Other than that... Mac OS is developed in a way that a re-installation will fix most issues straight away. In very rare occasions will you need to fiddle with the OS manually.

  • Outlook 2011 on my iMac crashing after upgrading iPad with iCloud and syncing

Plugged in my iPad to iMac.  It asked to upgrade iPad to 5.0.1.  Install seemed to go fine. I then synced calendars and contacts thru iTunes.  When I later restarted iMac (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) Outlook 2011 crashed as soon as messages window opened.  Other Office products-Word and Excel still work fine.
I Time Machined my Database-same crash.  Time machined the entire Outlook application-same crash.
Reinstalled Outlook application from my original Office DVD.  Now get a "Microsoft Office cannot be opened because of a problem" error message with no attempt to open program.
    Any suggestions out there?

It isn't possible unless your Mac is running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) or higher.  Also, you cannot sync iCloud contacts and calendars with Outlook 2011 for Mac, it that's what you have.  It will only sync these with the built-in OS X contacts and calendars apps.  (It will sync contacts and calendars with Outlook 2007 or higher for Windows.)

  • IMac crashes after installing MAC OS X v10.6.5 update

After installing the latest Snow Leopard update, my iMac worked fine. Restarts again and everything seems to be fine. But then after using for a certain period of time like 10 minutes or so, it shuts off without any notice. Then i rebooted again, it seemed fine but then the same thing occurred again. Now this problem has repeated for 5 times. Not sure what's the problem. Any suggestions on what i should do?

Please test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before you begin.
    Step 1
Quit the Contacts or Address Book application if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBookSourceSync
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash.
    Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.AddressBook
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 2
If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane. Press return to confirm, or click Keep on Mac in the dialog that opens.
If you synchronize contacts with any other network service, disable that synchronization in the Internet Accounts  preference pane.
    Step 3
From the list of groups on the left side of the Contacts window, select All On My Mac. If that group doesn't exist or is empty, skip this step. Otherwise, from the menu bar, select
File ▹ Export... ▹ Contacts Archive...
Save the exported archive to the Desktop.
    Step 4
Quit Contacts. Reveal the following item in the Finder as you did in Step 1:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
If you know when the problem started, and you can restore that folder from an earlier backup without losing any contacts, do so and test. Otherwise, move the folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.
    Step 5
Launch Contacts. Your contacts and groups will be gone. If you took Step 3, then double-click the file you created in that step and confirm that you want to import from it. Your contacts and groups will reappear.
    Step 6
If you took Step 2, reverse it. Test. If the issue is resolved, delete the AddressBook folder and the archive file on the Desktop and close the open folder window.
Otherwise, quit Contacts again and put the AddressBook folder back where it was, overwriting the newer one that will have been created in its place.
    Step 7
Go back to Step 3, but this time choose Export vCard... from the Export menu. Continue as in Steps 4-6. All contacts should be preserved, but you may lose some metadata such as group membership.

You indicate your system is new. Your best course of action would be to contact Applecare (or take it to an Apple store) for diagnosis and/or repair (under warranty).
