IMac crashes when previewing some jpg files

When I preview some jpg files using quicklook my Mac crashes, I get the same result when using get info on the same files. Other jpg files can be previewed without this problem. All jpg files open fine in Photoshop and can be saved with a different filename but the problem still exists with the new file. The files do not cause an issue on other iMacs. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Please restart your computer in Safe mode by taking these steps:
- Click on the Apple sign() at the upper left corner of the Desktop, select 'Shut down' from a drop-down menu;
- Wait until your computer turns off, then press the Power button(⌽);
- Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift(⇧) key. It should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone;
- Release the Shift(⇧) key when you see a grey Apple sign() and the progress bar below;
This will force the system to perform several maintenance routines and load essential system software.
Once you've seen the Desktop, start a Disk Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors:
- Open Disk Utility application:
1. Click on Finder at the bottom of your Desktop;
2. Select Applications folder from Finder's left sidebar and then open Utilities folder (or press Command(⌘)-Shift(⇧)-U), double-click on Disk Utility icon;
- Choose your main hard drive from the left sidebar ('Macintosh HD', usually);
- Click on 'Verify Disc' at the bottom right corner, your Mac will perform a diagnostic test. Click on 'Repair Disk' if prompted to fix problems, or follow instructions given on the Disk Utility window;
- Once the routine finished, click on ""Verify Disc Permissions"", after it's done, click on 'Repair Disc Permissions';
- Wait until the process's finished and shut down your Mac, turn it back on in 30 seconds;

  • Adobe Reader 9.x crashes when opening some pdf files that work fine with Adobe Reader 8.x

    Adobe Reader 9 crashes when opening approximately 10% to 20% of the pdfs in my collection. The remaining 80% to 90% work without problems. The pdfs are launched by double-clicking the pdf file from Windows Explorer. The crashes occur with both v9.0 and v9.1. The pdfs that crash in v9.x work fine in older versions of Adobe Reader, such as v8.1.3. Furthermore, this behavior also occurs on all 3 virtual machine hosted on the same physical machine, with default Adobe Reader settings, for both v9.0 and v9.1. The virtual machines have little running in memory except standard Windows executables - i.e. they are fairly pristine. The operating systems for the virtual machines are XP SP3, XP SP2, and Windows Server 2003.
    Error message info in all cases:
    app=acrord32.exe
    app version=9.1.0.163
    module=jp2klib.dll
    module version=2.0.0.2579
    offset=0003277d
    Operating system for real computer: XP SP3
    CPU: 1333 MHz Athlon single core
    RAM: 1 GB
    To sum up, this problem happens on both a real computer running XP SP3, and also on all 3 virtual machines hosted on the same physical computer. I tried changing the Reader setting to not use hardware rendering, to no avail. I also tried various Data Execution Prevention settings in Windows, to no avail. All operating systems, the real and virtual ones, do not have problems with other programs that I use. I also tried a second machine with Adobe Reader v9.1 and the same exact problem pdfs, and had no issues. Thus, the problem happens on only one of the computers, but on the real and 3 virtual operating systems on that machine. There were no errors reported during any of the Reader installations. The virtual machines had no prior versions of Reader prior to Reader installation.

    I did further testing of 10 single page pdf files which I created from a single book. All 5 pdf files with images crashed in Reader v9.1. 0 of the 5 pdf files without images crashed in Reader v9.1. Reader v8.1.4 crashes on none of the 10 pdfs. Note that the crash always occurs in jp2klib.dll, which according to the file property description is 'JPEG2000 Core Library', which deals with images. So it seems the issue is in Adobe's jp2klib.dll, in combination with the hardware/software that I have. I used Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic Tool to test DirectX, including visual tests of DirectDraw and Direct3D - everything worked as expected with no issues detected.<br /><br />Some information about my hardware:<br />Display drivers=Nvidia v84.21<br />Video card=GeForce FX 5200 with 128 MB RAM<br />CPU=AMD Athlon (single core)<br />System RAM=1024 MB in 3 DIMMs<br /><br />Further information about my hardware: (from the program System Information for Windows)<br /><br />Motherboard:<br />Manufacturer=ASUSTeK Computer INC.<br />Model=<A7V133><br />Version=REV 1.xx<br />Chipset Vendor=VIA Technologies Inc<br />Chipset Model=VT8363/5 KT133/KM133 System Controller<br />South Bridge=82C686B PCI to ISA Bridge<br />CPU=AMD Athlon<br />Cpu Socket=Slot A / Socket A [SOCKET A]<br />System Slots=5 PCI, 1 AGP<br />OnBoard devices=<unknown> (Disabled) Promise PDC20265<br />     <br />Memory Summary:<br />Location=System board or motherboard<br />Maximum Capacity=1536 MBytes<br />Memory Slots=3<br />Error Correction=None<br />Use=System memory<br /><br />CPU Info:<br />Number of CPU(s)=One Physical Processor / One Core / One Logical Processor<br />Vendor=AuthenticAMD<br />CPU Full Name=AMD Athlon<br />CPU Name=AMD Athlon(tm) Processor<br />CPU Code Name=Thunderbird<br />Technology=0.18µ<br />Platform Name=Slot A / Socket A<br />Type=Original OEM processor<br />FSB Mode=DDR<br />Type ID=0<br />CPU Clock=1323.68<br />L2 Cache Speed=1323.68 MHz<br />L2 Cache Speed=Full<br />CPU Family / Model / Stepping=6 / 4 / 4<br />L1 I-Cache=64 KB<br />L1 D-Cache=64 KB<br />L2 Cache=256 KB<br />RDMSR=00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000<br />MMX=Yes<br />MMX+=Yes<br />SSE=No<br />SSE2=No<br />SSE3=No<br />SSE4A=No<br />3DNow!=Yes<br />3DNow!+=Yes<br />DualCore=No<br />HyperThreading=No<br />AMD64=No<br />NX=No<br />VT=No<br />PowerNow!=No<br />LongHaul=No<br />LongRun=No<br />Architecture=x86<br /><br />Video:<br />AdapterCompatibility=NVIDIA<br />AdapterDACType=Integrated RAMDAC<br />AdapterRAM=128 MBytes<br />Availability=3<br />Caption=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />ConfigManagerErrorCode=0<br />ConfigManagerUserConfig=false<br />CurrentBitsPerPixel=32<br />CurrentHorizontalResolution=1280<br />CurrentNumberOfColors=4294967296<br />CurrentNumberOfColumns=0<br />CurrentNumberOfRows=0<br />CurrentRefreshRate=60<br />CurrentScanMode=4<br />CurrentVerticalResolution=1024<br />Description=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />DeviceID=VideoController1<br />DeviceSpecificPens=-1<br />DriverDate=20060309212900.000000-000<br />DriverVersion=6.14.10.8421<br />InfFilename=oem6.inf<br />InfSection=nv4_NV3x<br />InstalledDisplayDrivers=nv4_disp.dll<br />MaxRefreshRate=75<br />MinRefreshRate=60<br />Monochrome=false<br />Name=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />NumberOfColorPlanes=1<br />PNPDeviceID=PCI\VEN_10DEDEV_0322SUBSYS_91101462REV_A1\49AEDED500008<br />Status=OK<br />VideoArchitecture=5<br />VideoMemoryType=2<br />VideoModeDescription=1280 x 1024 x 4294967296 colors<br />VideoProcessor=GeForce FX 5200<br />BitsPerPel=32<br />DeviceName=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />DisplayFlags=0<br />DisplayFrequency=60<br />LogPixels=96<br />PelsHeight=1024<br />PelsWidth=1280<br />SettingID=NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200<br />SpecificationVersion=1025<br />BitsPerPixel=32<br />ColorPlanes=1<br />DeviceEntriesInAColorTable=-1<br />HorizontalResolution=1280<br />RefreshRate=60<br />VerticalResolution=1024<br />VideoMode=1280 by 1024 pixels, True Color, 60 Hertz<br />Video Bios Version=Version 4.34.20.22.00 <br />Video Bios Date=04/28/03<br />Name=GeForce FX 5200<br />Chip Type=GeForce FX 5200<br />DAC Type=Integrated RAMDAC<br />Memory=128 MBytes<br /><br />BIOS:<br />BIOS Version=ASUS   - 30303031, Award Medallion BIOS v6.0, Award Plug and Play BIOS Extension v1.0A, Award Modular BIOS v6.0<br />BIOS Date=04/23/02<br />BIOS Web Page=http://www.award.com<br />BIOS Vendor=Award Software, Inc.<br />Version=ASUS A7V-133 ACPI BIOS Revision 1009<br />Release=04/23/2002<br />BIOS Size=256 KB<br /><br />Memory:<br />Location=System board or motherboard<br />Maximum Capacity=1536 MBytes<br />Memory Slots=3<br />Error Correction=None<br />Use=System memory<br />Maximum Memory Module Size=1024 MBytes<br />Device Set=DIMM 1<br />Device Locator=DIMM 1<br />Capacity=256 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits<br />Device Locator=DIMM 2<br />Capacity=256 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits<br />Device Locator=DIMM 3<br />Capacity=512 MBytes<br />Memory Type=Synchronous DRAM<br />Data Width=64 bits<br />Form Factor=DIMM<br />Total Width=72 bits

  • CS5 crashes when previewing using temporary file

    Hello everyone!
    I've started having an issue with CS5 crashing anytime I try to preview a doc with out saving it first.
    I've had the "Preview using temporary file" option checked for more than a year and never had an issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks So Much!

  • CS5 crashes when previewing some photos

    First time this has happened. I'm working with rather small client provided photos 477x640; jpeg, gif, etc. and suddenly when I dragged a jpeg over to the preview the entire system crashed right down to the blue system screen. I run CS5 on a HP Z800, 6 core, 12 gigs RAM, Win 7 64 bit and it's been generally stable thus far. Here's the kicker, if I drag the photo directly to the timeline, the system doesn't crash. Doesn't matter if I turn off the GPU Accelerator or not. The crash happens only loading the picture in the preview window. This doesn't happen on all photos just some. I even brought the photo into Photoshop with no problem, saved it as a PSD, but the crash still happens in Premiere Pro CS5. Anybody know why?
    I think this is a CS5 only issue because on another computer (HPxw8400, 8 gigs RAM, Win 7 64 bit) running CS3 that same photo does not crash the system loading into the preview window.
    At the moment, my work around is to not load the photos into the preview window.

    Yeah Colin, looks like I could load the lastest Nvidia driver. I am using CS5 5.0.3.
    What I just did was load each photo one at a time to see which photos trigger the crash. After loading 14 good photos (JPGs and GIFs) I came across two other photos, BMPs this time, that crashed the system. It too is a RGB 8 bit file. So no discerning trait among them. It seems most of the JPGs and GIF have no issue. All I can think of is that perhaps these few photos are somehow corrupt, but only the 64 bit Premiere Pro CS5 brings this to light. Can't say I've found a bug or not, or if it's just something wrong with these few files that CS5 doesn't like.
    All these photos came to me online from the client's computer via YouSendIt.com. I believe suspect files came through in different batches with other good files, so can't really blame an upload issue.
    I don't think there are any viruses involved. I've scanned everything with my AVG and no issue found. Not that all viruses come to light in every anti-virus program though.
    For now, I think I'll just work in CS3 and try to trouble shoot further later.
    If anyone would like this photo to test on their system, let me know.
    Thanks, guys.

  • After effects CS6 and premiere pro and adobe encoder crash when previewing profess 422 files, after upgrading to Mavericks

    I have tried all of the fixes and updates that adobe have to offer. They say that this is because of the change in QuickTIme that are causing the problem. Still looking for a fix. Please any help would be greatfully appreciated.

    I experienced this at one point.  Searching the WEB I saw suggestions that there was a problem with a recent version of Quicktime.  (I have no idea why the quicktime player would have an impact.)  However, reverting to an earlier version of Quicktime fixed the problem.  Search this board using quicktime as a search phase.  The quicktime web site allows you to download the earlier versions.  I'm not at my editing machine, but I believe that I am at version 7.5.2.

  • 10.5 - Finder crashes when previewing jpgs created in photoshop

    Finder crashes when previewing jpgs created in photoshop. It seems to be associated with the preview. The finder crashes whether it is in cover flow or column view.
    The only workaround I could find:
    Switch finder to list view. Open the jpg (again) in photoshop, select all and copy. Create an new doc of the same size and paste. Save as jpg. Don't ask me why but it will then preview correctly in both cover flow view and column view.
    It's a pain to open and re-save... anyone else having issues with jpgs? or know of a quicker workaround?

    This is definitely a common problem.
    I discovered this after saving some artwork from illustrator as a PDF. Opening it in Photoshop (to get the bleeds), and then saving out as a CMYK colourspace JPG. I tried a dozen times to attach it to an email to my client, but it kept springing back, and would not attach to a mail message no matter what I tried.
    It also crashes finder/preview, and quickview, and safari when trying to look at it. If I copy the flattened artwork into a new PS document and save it out as a JPG then it's fine.
    Worse - I understand that if you put one of these files in the downloads stack, then it will continually crash your dock. Nice!
    This points towards some meta data problem/incompatibility between with the JPG files coming from adobe and apple's apps...
    This is TOTALLY embarrassing as my PC has no problems at all with either JPG...
    As someone who switched to Mac for professional reasons after several years of PC use, I cannot believe how slow apple and adobe have been to sort out such a fundamental problem.
    Come on guys - less time ponsing about with iPods - remember the media industry who put you here.
    Personally I'm hanging on to Leopard by my fingernails - and am so close to saying sod it, and going back to Tiger.

  • Preview.app in Snow Leopard doesn't open some jpg files

    Preview.app in Snow Leopard doesn't open some jpg files.
    Preview does't issue an error message, it behaves as I did't try to open file at all.
    These images could be easy opened in iPhoto, so files seem to be OK.
    I couldn't attach one such example image to this message, it's exceeds 2mb limit, but courtesy to google image could be downloaded by the link https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B56gs1tsb9aNYjA2MDdmNzUtOWY3NS00ODg1LWIzZDAtYTA 5YzFjZmZjYjRh&hl=en_US.
    What's that? Should I file a bug?

    Unfortunately, it sounds as if your internal disk failed (hardware failure).
    Things to try:
    (1) Boot from your Apple Hardware Test CD/DVD, which sometimes is a separate disk or sometimes is on the original OS install disk. Run the tests, all of them, to see what is amiss.
    (2) Reset PRAM as described in  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 . I don't think this is likely to help because even though your startup disk is not being selected, it seems that your internal disk is simply unable to be found or mounted, implying hardware failure more than software. But it's worth a try.
    Probably time to take your computer in for repairs, either at the Apple Store or to an authorized Apple repair shop. Most likely they will simply replace your drive. You could also ask them to mount the old drive in an enclosure to see if files can be copied from it if you don't have a backup.

  • Finder is crashing when previewing files

    My finder keeps crashing when previewing files from an external hard drive. It's mov-files and stills(cr2).
    I have files recorded on two separate days. When previewing files day 2 there's no problem but when previewing files from day 1 finder is crashing every time. I have back up of all the files on another drive. On the back up drive there's no problem to preview files.

    That is why I want you to erase it.. so you can get access.. but I cannot trial it for you... I do not have one.. you have to trial it yourself.
    Setup the TC to use Accounts.. not use disk password or device password.. after an erase.
    See if that fixes it.
    See this post for different but maybe related issue.

    As i said at the start, members of the Power Uses or Administrators group don't have this issue - but as 99% of our users are "users" and not really an option to make them all members of PU group.
    Same also happens if the computer is removed from the domain.  Admin & power users work, standard users crash IE.
    Uninstall and reinstall of Office 2013 and IE11 has no apparent difference.
    Assistance in this is appreciated.

  • My iBook crashes when previewed or after exporting it and sync

    Hello,
    I designed a photography iBook, and added 2 gallery widgets of 20 pics each. My iBook crashes when previewed on my iPad 3 or after exporting it and syncing it to the iPad. It happens after viewing the book and interacting with it.
    I have seen that the gallery widgets behave a bit sloppily when you swipe to the next pic, also the second row of thumbails (pics 11 to 20) don't show properly, some thumbails just don't appear.
    What can I do? delete the widgets and start again? Is the iBook crashing because of them?  Any user having this problem in the past months?
    Thank you!

    I did it, removed both, started from 0 again. Same problem, thumbails dont show for items 11 to 20. The widget in general works a bit sloppily always, no matter amount of items.
    i tried to make images smaller in resolution, same problem.
    only solution: never have more than 10 items per gallery, and split 20 photos in 2 different galleries in 2 pages.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 quits when opening some .aspx files

    Dreamweaver CS3 has begun suddenly quitting when opening some .aspx files - not all, just some.  Other .aspx files open just fine.  In most cases these files are virtually identical in every way from one to the next and still, one will open and the other will cause DW to crash.  This problem just started about a week ago.
    I have been running DWCS3 on the same Vista Ultimate machine for over 2 years now with Service Pack2 installed.  Apart from these few .aspx files, the program is running as it always has... perfectly.  Nothing has changed on the machine, nothing new is installed, and, as far as I know, no Windows updates have come through from MS.
    I have tried bringing the files down from the remote server to see if my local copies were somehow corrupt but... same thing.
    Any thoughts?

  • Imac crashes when i try to start itunes...all other programs are working fine....help !!!

    imac crashes when i try to start itunes.... have updated everything...still crashes...please help...

    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
    If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
    (not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
    I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

    Actually, no I don't have crossfade playback on. The files cut out anywhere from 5 - 60 seconds before the file is supposed to finish, it really has nothing to do with crossfade...
