IMac crashes when unmounting its volume

I have an Intel iMac (education version) and I connect to it over the network to retrieve files on occasion (from my Powerbook). When I'm on my PowerBook and I unmount the iMac drive in the finder, then my iMac crashes and must be rebooted. I'm at a loss to figure out why? I'm running the latest version of OS X (10.4.8) on both computers. I think the issue may be that the computer is connected to one network by ethernet and another by airport. Anyone else have the same problem?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Sorry, but you're rambling here. Could you please explain first what is connected to what by which protocol and then the sequence of what you do which results in the crash?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Then maybe it's time to buy a new Windows notebook.
The RAM has either gone bad or somehow become unseated. Also there is the chance that the RAM slots have failed.

Both Memory Clean and Clean My Mac could have cause the damage which triggered the kp.
I would back up your Mac, erase and reinstall. Then Migrate your user data from the backup.
Uninstalling Tuxera is a troubleshooting process. You don't have to keep it uinstalled, just long enough to test to see if it is causing the problems.
However, if it doesn't happen regularly, it would be hard to determine if it was the cause.  And, as I mentioned, I don't think it would be the cause.

Air and iMac crash when trying to upgrade to Mavericks from Lion.

Make sure your Macs can run Mavericks >  OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
The v10.9.2 link you posted from is not an upgrade. It's an update for Mavericks only.

  • Hello,  After upgrading my OS to Mavericks my iMac crashes when I log in.  Any suggestions?

Need some advice,  after downloading Mavericks, my iMac crashes upon logging in... When I log back in it says that I turned off my computer due to a problem.  I cant get any other info on my Mac as I can't log back in, but Its a 2011, 21 inch, iMac.  Any suggestions???

Try to narrow it down even further. Disconnect everything, including the keyboard, and add things back one at a time, keyboard last.
The built-in hubs of keyboards have been known to be wonky. It is possible that for some reason it (or another peripheral device) is drawing too much power.

  • IMac crashes when powering off external Thunderbolt drive

    Hi,
I have an external LaCie d2 USB 3.0 drive that is connect to my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011, 3,1 GHz Intel Core i5, 12 GB RAM) through Thunderbolt. Whenever I power off the drive by pushing the power button (yes I did verify: all partitions have been ejected correctly before in the Finder and verified in Disk Utility), the iMac crashes. It starts up again, displays a screen stating the computer was not shut down properly and then immediately restarts. After that it boots up fine.
This started occurring after having installed 10.10.2 Beta. I did file a report with Apple. As this was beta software I decided to completely reinstall the iMac from scratch (a complete fresh install, just imported my documents manually after) and everything was working fine again (10.10.1). Boom, after having updated 10.10.2 yesterday the problem is back.
I did manage to find a workaround: when I connect the drive through a UBS cable it works fine. Conclusion: this seems to be caused by a Thunderbolt related update in 10.10.2.
Question: is any one else with an external Thunderbolt drive experiencing this and has perhaps found a fix?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

    Same issue:
    - 4TB LaCie d2 Thunderbolt & USB3.0 drive (model # 9000303)
    - iMac (27’’ mid-2011), Thunderbolt firmware version 25,1 and Port Micro firmware version 2.1.3 (as seen in System Information)
    - OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Unmounting LaCie d2 disk partitions is OK: the drive spins down and goes to sleep without problem. However when I take the power off (with the small switch at the rear of the unit), the iMac experiences a kernel panic.
This issue did not occur with Yosemite 10.10.1, and does not occur either with another LaCie drive (8TB LaCie 2big Thunderbolt drive, model # 9000246). So the issue is specific to OS X 10.10.2, and only certain models of drive(s).
We need a fix from Apple - the Operating System should be rock-solid in any circumstances.
Curiously, OS X does not write a kernel panic log with every occurrence. It’s only after the 3rd or 4th kernel panic that it would actually produce this log:

Im working on a project in InDesign CS6 (Adobe).  I've exported a few jpegs via that software.  When finder tries showing me a preview of the jpeg or if I try to open it in any way my iMac crashes and restarts.  It's driving me nuts.  I've tried resetting permissions, using time machine, and removing some anti virus software I was using.  Nothing has helped.  However, I am able to open the jpegs on my macbook air.  I'm getting to do clean reinstall however that scares the **** out of me. Please help  Here's the crash report.

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall those items and reboot. If KP, then most likely hardware related.  Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

  • Imac crashes when i install the windows 7 sp1

So I have gotten past the intiall hurdle of installing windows 7 on my 27 inch Imac, which was not easy. it was done through boot camp and involved deleting a few key system files after the install crashes on reboot.
Now the computer is crashing when it attempts to install the sp1. Is their any fix for this yet. i believe all imac are having this problem. I am currently running windows without the sp1 installed. i am getting tired of how difficult it is to run windows on a mac. It is essential to my business to run both OS s.

Don`t know if this is to any help to you at all, but I run Windows 7 on my iMac 27" through Parallels Desktop and I have installed SP1 no problems at all. Maybe you could try that?

  • Flash player crashes when adjusting audio volume

MacBook Pro, OS X Version 10.9.5
    Safari internet browser, version 7.1
I am taking online classes via megameeting.com.  When loading the classroom, flash works perfectly fine.  However, as soon as I adjust the computer's audio volume (either by pressing the keyboard button or manually clicking and dragging the volume adjustment slider bar on my desktop), I immediately get a white screen with a gray "plugin failure" message.
I can run the same classroom simultaneously on the same computer utilizing google chrome, and flash does not crash on the chrome browser when I adjust the volume.
I followed the directions to perform a clean uninstall and reinstall (running Flash version 15), and I still have the same problem.  My settings are set to allow internet plugins.  So far, I have not detected this problem where adjusting the audio volume crashes flash on other websites.  Any help?

    Hi Gboyaj,

  • IMac crashes when I print to Brother laser, but not HP inkjet

I have an old Brother laser printer that still works fine. When I print to it from my iMac or from any of several iPads, the iMac crashes (turns off). Remarkably, the printing finishes anyway. I also have an HP Photosmart and it works fine from any device. This may have started happening after I installed Mavericks, but I ignored it for a while because I had an alternative and was usually in a hurry. I get no error, just a beep and the iMac goes dead.

Moved to Desktop board for better exposure.

I'd be grateful if one of you gurus shed some light on the possible cause.
    Cheers and happy new year!

That panic was not caused by third-party software, and it's the kind that is usually caused by a memory fault. If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test, if applicable.

  • IMac crashes when editing heavy photo's in iPhoto

    Dear iMac professors,
Since two months I am using a new camera with pictures that are (even) heavier than before (up to 20Mb).
When editing the pictures it looks like my iMac (dating from 2009 - yes, it is time to upgrade...) can't handle them. This results in a crash of my iMac meaning it does not react to any command anymore. Also the mouse acts as being dead. This happens frequently and I do not have a solution.
I already tried the Cmd+alt+Esc soft restart, but this did not help as the key commands do not work.
The only thing that "helps" is a hard return (switching off the power to the iMac).
I have a 1 TB hard disk memory of which more than 700 Gb is still free.
Thanks for any smart solutions you may want to share.
    Regards,
    Aellom

    Old Toad,
A smart tool that confirms my iMac has (only) 4GB RAM.
Time to upgrade or should iPhoto (with less than 9,000 pictures) work well on this machine as well?
    Regards,
    Aellom

  • Kernel panic when unmounting AppleShare volume

    Hi,
This started recently and I was hoping somebody can help. I have two Mac, an iMac (Core 2 Duo) and a MacBook (Core Duo). The iMac is connected via ethernet and the MacBook wirelessly to a Linksys WRT54G. Whenever I want to share files between the two computers, I'll mount the other computer's volume (file sharing is turned on for both).
    They are both running 10.4.8.
This will only happen when I mount the iMac volume (more precisely my Home directory with my user name) on my MacBook. But apparently I can reproduce this every time, even after a fresh reboot.
So, I'll mount my user directory (called "rawhead") of my iMac onto my MacBook. I'll transfer some files, and I'll unmount the directory using Command + E (or dragging to the trash). Then, as the volume is unmounting, the iMac (not the MacBook) kernel panics!! It feels really odd because I'm working on my MacBook for the entire time, not even touching my iMac but that's the one that kernel panics.
Anyway, here's the "Report" that my iMac generates:

    Hi, Satoru.
    1. You wrote: "This started recently…"What changes did you make to the systems in question and your network before this problem arose? Often, when problems arise suddenly, the last change one made is the culprit.
    2. Your panic is network related. The line:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0035BEAC): freeing free mbuf
indicates this, as do the kernel-loadable modules cited in the Backtrace. The "freeing free mbuf" deals with network kernel extensions. An mbuf is "a data structure containing data about a network packet." (Sources: Called in uipc_mbuf.c, definition from Network Kernel Extensions Programming Guide.)
    3. I'm not familiar with your Linksys wireless router, but I suggest that you see "AirPort: Issues connecting to third-party wireless access points using proprietary speed enhancement options."
    4. Otherwise, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
    Good luck!

  • IMac Crashing When Ejecting iPod

I have an early '06 Intel iMac Core Duo 1.83 GHz running 10.4.8. I Recently it has been crashing during sleep mode. The keyboard and mouse would power on, but the sleep light would still be blinking and monitor still blank. Only fix is a hard reset.
Most recently, I get the dreaded "you must restart OS X" grey screen of death. I've been noticing that all of this only happens after I eject my Fifth Generation iPod video from the system. The last crash came immediately after I ejected the iPod thru iTunes. Also what was strange was that the clock disappeared from my menu bar when I restarted. I had to go into preferences to turn it back on...I have no idea what that was all about. I also do have a USB hard drive connected thru a hub if that affects anything, but I haven't noticed any problems after ejecting that.
I have run HW tests from the installation DVD which did not indicate a problem, I reset PRAM, repaired disk permissions, keychains etc. I did install additional RAM, but it is Apple RAM i got from the Apple store, and the hardware test said it RAM was functioning normally. The iPod is connected to the iMac directly (not thru a hub) using an Apple USB ipod cable. I did notice though that the iTunes helper was unchecked in my login items, so i re-checked it. I am not sure how ejecting an iPod can cause this problem so I'm wondering if anyone else knows what this is or how to fix it?
    iMac 17" 1.83 GHz Intel, iBook G4 12.1"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Dennis...
Thanks for that link about resolving kernal panics. I went through many of the recommended tests. RAM checked out OK, and my hardware seems to OK. But, when I ran Disk Utility to verify "Macintosh HD", it displayed this message:
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
Apple's docs listed this "underlying task" failure as a "rare" issue that needs to be addressed "soon." So I ran Disk Utility from the Tiger DVD and the volume was repaired. Hopefully this fixed the issue, I'll keep an eye on things for a week or so and if I dont post again, assume it is fixed. Thanks again.
