IMAC crashing intermittently ( Maverick OS)
Recently iMAC started to crash intermittently. Initially I noted it may be during opening the web browsers but know I note it is without any program running also. I tried running on disk verify ( & repair as was required) & on safe mode. Below is the crash report submitted to 'apple':

IMac crashes - Kernel Mavericks
Hi There
Ever since updating to OS X Mavericks, my 2013 iMac crashes with the below error log.
I was previously using mountain lion to which I had never come across this issue.
If you could point me in the right direction on how to stop it crashing that would be great.
here is the error log - http://pastebin.com/5ms6xZnhHere's my suggestion: Uninstall fully your Symantek software. Use the uninstaller that came with the software. Restart the computer, then see if the crashes stop.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:
1. AppZapper 2.0.1
2. AppDelete 3.2.6
3. Automaton 1.50
4. Hazel
5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
6. CleanApp
7. iTrash 1.8.2
8. Amnesia
9. Uninstaller 1.15.1
10. Spring Cleaning 11.0.1

My iMac ran immaculately piror to upgrading to Mavericks. Immediately after the upgrade it started acting up. First it wouldn't wake from sleep. I'd have to manually power off then power on after long periods of no use. Then it started crashing. I'd hear it restart in the middle of the night. Sometimes it would be awake in the morning. Other times it would just be a blank white light. Restarting worked for a while. Then occasionally restarting wouldn't work. It would boot through the Apple sign and just stay on a white screen. It got to the point where it didn't boot all the way on most attempts. Sometimes the screen would be white. Other times the screen would be blue with vertical white lines or white with vertical black lines. I tried to repair disk, reset PRAM, all the steps you're supposed to take when you're Mac is acting up. Nothing worked. It wouldn't even let me enter Hardware test. So as a last ditch effort before driving forty miles to an Apple Store and losing my machine and my source of money for a week or so I tried a full system delete and reinstall of Mavericks. The issues continued but I was at least able to run Hardware Test. Hardware Test showed a bad Ram card. I isolated the bad Ram card, removed it and it worked great for two days. Today I came home to a white screen. Tried restarting and it didn't boot four times. Ran Hardware Test again and it came back with no problems. After the Hardware Test I rebooted and here I am. I'm certain it's going to happen again. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Please help. Really don't want to lose my machine for a week.
Thanks
ShawnAre both RAM cards original or otherwise obtained from the same vendor? It would be unlikely for only one to fail, and OS X upgrades often reveal marginal RAM.
AHT doesn't always identify bad RAM. Nothing can, other than to test it while installed in specialized test equipment. Substitution is the only troubleshooting method available to the user. -
2008 24" iMac crashing both SnowLeopard and Mavericks
My iMac crashes about 1-3 times a day, usually while scrolling (either via scroll wheel or using mouse), or switching tasks. Sometimes the screen goes blank (either solid grey or white, or horizontal grey or white stripes, or all black), or the screen presents the normal picture but the cursor disappears or doesn't move, or the cursor moves over a normal screen but no actions can be taken (force quit not available either by mouse or by keyboard). Often I have Mail or Safari open but not always. So I have to do a hard kill and then restart. Computer restarts normally and nothing seems damaged. Apps work as they should.
This problem occurred when I was running Snow Leopard, and has reoccurred after switching to Mavericks. I keep the OS updated to the latest version of each. My iMac has 4 GB RAM and 1 TB HD (3 partitions) currently with TimeCapsule Router (2TB HD), but I had the same problems under Snow Leopard when running 2 GB RAM and 320MB HD and Airport Base Station.
When I upgraded OS to Mavericks and HD to 1TB I did disk repair using Apple's tool as well as Drive Genius3, then did a backup, and then inserted new HD and installed Mavericks to a 700GB partition, and restored from backup. Then I used AppZapper to remove residual of all apps that would no longer run under Mavericks. Also tried disabling all Safari extensions. All to no avail.
Do anyone have any ideas? Is this related to older HW (Core 2 Duo) and newer OS?Create a new admin user account in Users & Groups preferences. If you have Automatic Login enabled, then disable it. Restart the computer and choose the new account for login.
Operate out of this new account for a day or so to see if the problems are resolved.

IMac 24" 3.06Ghz crashes intermittently, causes endless restarts
Hi All,
I have a 24-inch, 3.06 Ghz Intel iMac that has been crashing intermittently for months now. The crashes seem to happen at mostly random times, but occur more frequently during processor-intensive tasks. Specifically, the crashes almost always happen when I'm playing a game (World of Warcraft), doing a system update thatbrequires a restart or doing more than one thing at a time in iTunes (syncing my iPad, listening to music and downloading multiple podcasts).
When the crashes happen, everything freezes up and I get the spinning beach ball. No applications are responsive and I'm unable to bring up the Force Quit window. At this point, I have no choice but to do a hard shutdown (by holding the power button). For the next several minutes after the shutdown, starting up the computer causes a series of endless restarts on a blank black screen. The only way to get the computer to start up normally again is to leave it off for a few minutes. Then it starts up without a problem.
I'm stumped. Thank you all for any help you can provide.
- MikeThe CPU is fine. The HDD is pretty warm - 120F would be more comfortable (mine is 123F with nothing much going on), but the fan is trying to keep it down so the system is doing what it should.
If your HD stays that hot constantly, rather than only when being very active (reindexing Spotlight, running a backup, or other continuous activity) then I'd start to worry some. Generally HDs don't like going over 130F. -
Need some advice, after downloading Mavericks, my iMac crashes upon logging in... When I log back in it says that I turned off my computer due to a problem. I cant get any other info on my Mac as I can't log back in, but Its a 2011, 21 inch, iMac. Any suggestions???
Try to narrow it down even further. Disconnect everything, including the keyboard, and add things back one at a time, keyboard last.
The built-in hubs of keyboards have been known to be wonky. It is possible that for some reason it (or another peripheral device) is drawing too much power. -

IMac late 2009 crashing with Maverick
I have a problem with my iMac (late 2009) that I cannot solve. It has become very slow, and crashes regularly after some time. Impossible to repair it, neither from the disk recovery partition, nor an external HD boot and using Disk Utility. So everytime I have to download Maverick again and install it to be able to work. I have noticed that after the fresh installation, and and a few days of working, Disk Utility shows problems with Disk permissions that need to be repaired. This occurs systematically.
To complete the story, the iMac was working fine when I bought it, but was returned to Apple for the HD substitution (Apple replacement programme). After this, and/or after installing Maverick (but I am not sure the 2 things are related), the problem started.
I have also tried PRAM resetting, no effect. Any suggestion? For 2009 iMac owners on Mavericks, I recommend this procedure. Saved me a lot of frustration after almost a month of constant crashes and getting no work done.
I downloaded a temperature monitor to see what was happening. Before the fix, the temperature on the "north bridge heat sink” would just go up and up without fail. Particularly when using flash or a video related application. It would just keep rising until until the graphics card just shuts down.
It’s a 3 year old bug related to 10.6.3 and GPU drivers (ATI/AMD). Here’s the link to the guy who figured it out and should be testing for apple. You have to use terminal to solve the issue. He explains everything in detail.
http://www.pauloamgomes.net/blog/fix-weird-os-x-freeze-imacs-late-2009
After the fix, the temperature at the graphics card stays level. I’ve also decided to use a fan control app for the moment so temperatures stay around 50 and the iMac runs like it should. Even in my hot room in the summer.
Been crashless since doing the procedure. Try it out. better than lugging a 27" iMac around town. -
Hi,
my imac crash with a kernel panic many times per day, many applications are unable to open correctly and the close after 1 or 2 seconds.
I suspect a memory problem but i am not sure. here is the dump of the last crash.

Is Safari still crashing in Mavericks?
Upgraded to Safari 6.1 in Lion (10.7.5) and now it crashes when I click on some links. (Every time I click on the new iPad Air site link). I see that others are also having similar troubles. Does Safari still crash in Mavericks?
No problems with my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion (using now) but when I removed Safari extensions and tested as a guest user on my iMac using Lion and even after resetting Safari and emptying caches (which has worked in the past to stop Safari crashes) problem persisted. Will try again later and post crash report.

IMac crashes when I print to Brother laser, but not HP inkjet
I have an old Brother laser printer that still works fine. When I print to it from my iMac or from any of several iPads, the iMac crashes (turns off). Remarkably, the printing finishes anyway. I also have an HP Photosmart and it works fine from any device. This may have started happening after I installed Mavericks, but I ignored it for a while because I had an alternative and was usually in a hurry. I get no error, just a beep and the iMac goes dead.
Moved to Desktop board for better exposure.

IMac crashes frequently, defective CPU?
My iMac seems to crash pretty frequently, sometimes once a day, sometimes multiple times a day and sometimes once a week.
I've tried everything possible to see what I can do about it but nothing has seemed to work. I've even completely wiped my iMac and installed Mavericks fresh. (It used to happen even before Mavericks).
The only thing I can think of it being is a defective CPU.
I purchased this as a refurbished model from Apple in February 2012.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!I installed the extra two 4GB memory modules when I first got the Mac and never had a problem for like a year. So I don't think it's the memory modules.
It's very difficult replicating the crash too. It just happens to very randomly. -
IMac crashes when I access video in Safari
Hi everyone.
A few weeks ago my iMac started to crash intermittently while using Safari, when opening a video. We first noticed it happening a lot on MSNBC. When we open the video, it starts, and usually, right at the beginning, just when they start talking the system crashes.
The problem is getting worse. It’s happened on other sites now, including uTube.
I have reviewed the help forums and haven’t seen anything that matches what’s happening to me. I did uninstall and reinstall Flash, and I did run disk utility.
After doing both, I opened several videos, and everything worked fine… I thought it was solved. Tonight, first video I opened… crash. It was on the MSNBC site.
When it crashes a dark semi-transparent “curtain” falls down the screen. The audio goes into a loop – like a record skipping. If you are old enough for that to be meaningful At the same time a black box appears with the text “You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button.” It also shows 3 other languages.
I restart, and see below the error information I get.

Any suggestions? The same thing happens to me. I had it checked a month ago and the logic board and the display were replaced. But the same thing happened again and now i have repeated kernel panics everyday, again, With videos(any video at any site), with flash sites, with larger or several images, with photo booth...i'm desperate and don't know what to do. Before i had my imac checked i formated it, re-installed the mac os software, all my files are stored in an external disk... so...i'm desperate really really having a nervous breakdown with this problem. Please HELP!

IMac crashing since Yosemite came out
Since I installed Yosemite I have ocasional crashes, the screen goes black (sometimes blue/green) and the iMac restarts automatically.
It happens when playing video games mostly (in this case, World of Warcraft), but sometimes it happened using a video editing software.
When returning to the desktop sometimes there is a message of "there was a graphics error" and then you can send the report to Apple.
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)
Mac OS X 10.10.1 Yosemite
2,7 GHz Intel Core i5
6 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
I did the Apple Hardware Test (3 passes, full test) and the results came ok.
I thought the issue could be related to the graphics card, like the drivers not being correctly installed.
Afterwards I tried to downgrade to Mavericks, using an USB drive, but for some reason once the installation starts there is an error and the installation is canceled. There doesn't seem to be a Yosemite Combo Upgrade yet.
I searched in the World of Warcraft Mac forums and other users are having the same problem, in newer iMacs.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, I have posted here the EtreCheck report.
Problem description:
iMac crashes while playing video games since I installed Yosemite (in this case, World of Warcraft but it also happened using a video editing software). Screen goes black then the computer self-restarts. Sometimes there is a message: “there was a graphics error” and you can send the report to Apple. I ran the Apple Hardware Test (3 passes) and the results were ok.

IMac Crashing; No Fixes Working/Getting a Chance to Work
Hi, this is my first time on these forums asking a question, so forgive me if I've categorised this wrong or something.
I use my iMac nearly everyday for browsing the Internet, word prossessing, digital drawing and playing Minecraft. So, personally, I don't think it is ever being put to degree of stress because I've been doing those same tasks on it for well over a year and it has run smoothly and given me no trouble. However, two days ago, I logged in and got a finder error message, which although I found odd, I simply okayed, not really taking a note of it as I in no way expected crashing issues to arise from it. The error code started with something like -108, which I now believe was the code -10810.
So I continued using the computer after I okayed the message, only to find that Skype (which automatically opens at login) quit unexpectedly. After clicking the "reopen" button on the report, the Skype icon bounced once, the blue light underneath appearing for a second. After this I noticed the finder report and clicked it's "reopen" button and thought it didn't work as the report was still there, but it was in fact a second report as every time I tired to open finder, I would receive a new report in mere mili-seconds. I tried other programs such as Safari and Minecraft and they all wouldn't open. Then I went to restart the computer when I noticed the Apple icon and toolbar missing. So I shut down the computer using the power button.
On reboot, things started going crazy. Booting took a while, when it loaded the desktop, it would fade to blue for a few seconds then fade back to the desktop. After a few minutes, the dark, transparent curtain moved down the screen and the message "You have to restart your computer" appeared.
I've tried numerous times to find out the problem/fix it but nothing seems to be working. Worse, the computer either crashes/freezes at login, crashes within seconds of reaching the desktop or works fine (with noticable odd things occurring [such as the screen going blue, desktop items disappearing and then reappearing] but if I try to run things that may help fix my problems (such as software update, reinstalling OS X) the computer crashes/freezes.
What I've tired so far:
The reset (I can't remember the name) where you detach the power cable and hold down the power button for five seconds, then reattach the cable and turn on the computer. No apparent effect.
Safe Mode:
Worked first time, however it crashed while on the desktop on second and third use, after which I haven't used it.
Single-User Mode for fsck:
fsck ran fine, reporting that it did alter something and I had hoped that this had fixed it, but as soon as I reached the desktop, the iMac crashed.
Software Update:
My Internet is bad enough as it is (less than 1MB/Sec, problem with living in a rural area and being on a contract until October) so I haven't been keeping up with some updates as it takes forever to download them. However, anytime I try to update now, the computer either crashes, won't open Software Update or freezes while it goes to install the updates.
Disk Utility:
Found nothing wrong.
Reinstalling Mac OSX: (Via holding down C at bootup and from the disk if I reach the desktop.)
Either the computer freezes on the Apple logo and spinning gear (which usually doesn't even appear whenever I booted up the iMac) when I hold down C, or it will freeze/crash as the computer tries to restart opening the utilities panel if I run the reinstall from the desktop.
Everytime I've tried to boot the computer today (day three) has resulted in the computer staying on the Apple logo and spinning gear. So without going any further, I decided to ask this to the community because nothing seems to be working, worse being the fact that I'm just on my holidays from University and I'm pretty much lost without the computer
As for the iMac's details I'm really not sure since I generally use the "About this Mac..." feature which I can't get to now. Although I think the only important bits is that it is running on OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with no external hard drives.
I'd really appretiate any help, thanks
AletonumOne of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having
