IMac creating VPN for ATV 2 via Internet Sharing...

Apologies for the complex nature of this problem/question. Any guidance you (the great and the good of the Apple eco-system) can offer will be gratefully received.
First up, most of what I set out below works fine. Or should I say, it all works fine, but intermittently fails on me. And I realise it's possibly a 'home network configuration' issue, but I'd still appreciate someone with the requisite skills checking this over....
The following feature in my set up, all running latest software versions:
1. a late 2012 iMac running Mountain Lion.
2. an Apple TV 2.
3. a first generation Time Capsule.
4. a Strong VPN account.
5. an ADSL modem / router.
As it stands:
the Time Capsule is connected to the ADSL modem via Ethernet.
the ADSL modem / router is configured as DHCP.
the ADSL modem / router is configured to provide a 802.11g network - SLOWNET
the Time Capsule is configured in Bridge mode.
the Time Capsule is configured to provide a 802.11n WiFi network - FASTNET
the iMac is connected to the Time Capsule via Ethernet.
the iMac is configured to establish a VPN connection.
the iMac is configured to create a WiFi network - VPNNET
the VPN connection is shared using 'Internet Sharing' to users of VPNNET.
Apple TV connects to VPNNET.
All works, and all is well. EXCEPT:
1. regularly ATV loses the connection to VPNNET, usually when it (ATV) hasn't been used for a while, hence VPNNET likely to have been disconnected / reconnected since ATV last accessed it. Having lost the network connection, it can take over one hour to get it back. Sometimes it can't see VPNNET, sometimes it connects but can't see the Internet - and occasionally  I've changed DNS server address in ATV to Google (8.8.8.8) and it kicked it back into life.
2. Home Sharing on ATV doesn't work when it's connected to VPNNET - I have to connect to FASTNET to get it to work.
So the questions I have are:
1. How should DHCP be set up on my network, Time Capsule, modem / router, doesn't matter? What about on the iMac for VPNNET?
2. Is there a way to configure the above kit, and have the VPN and Home Sharing working at the same time?
3. Where / How should DNS be configured in my set up?
As I write this down I'm forced to  acknowledge just how involved it is, and don't hold out much hope of someone coming along with a simple "change these settings and problem over" solution - but I can live in hope!
Thanks for reading to the end.

  • Who is connected via internet sharing?

How do you view who is connected to your wifi via internet sharing? I had to get rid of the password in order to get internet sharing to work with my other devices.

One way is to use Network Utility (Applications/Utilities). Click on the Netstat tab then select "Display routing table information." Next click the oval "Netstat" button to run it and down the left column of information you should see the names and MAC addresses of any connected computers.

  • Proxy via Internet Sharing

    Hello, Apple Communities.
I am having some problems with proxy setting.
I contacted Apple about it, and they couldn't give me any solution,
So I was wondering is there anyone who can figure it out.
I am trying to use proxy, via internet sharing.
Which means, I would like keep the proxy setting universal through out internet sharing.
For instance, if I use internet on my iPhone through my mac(=internet sharing), I wish my iphone on proxy.
    But apparently the proxy setting,
actually all sercutiy settings are not shared on internet sharing.
Is there anyway to fix this?

My only advice would be to buy a router like the airport extreme.

  • Connecting ipod touch to internet via internet sharing

My MacPro was connected to the internet. My ipod touch showed that it was connected to the MacPro via internet sharing, but I could not get the ipod to complete the connection to the internet. I selected "Allow all incoming connections" in the MacPro system preferences>security>firewall and the ipod could see the internet. Success.

If we wanted to open only individual ports (or a range of ports) rather than disabling the whole firewall, which ports would we leave open?
    TIA,

  • Can't connect ipad to Mountain Lion iMac via Internet sharing?

    Hello,
I've always used Internet Sharing to create a wifi hotspot from my iMac, so that I can get an internet connection on my iPad.  After updating to Mountain Lion this does not seem to work.  Anyone know how?
The hotspot generated by my iMac's internet sharing has never worked with my Kindle, but I would at least expect it to work with Apple's own products.  Hoepfully someone knows a solution?
    Thanks
    Bob

Seems that the issue is something to do with connecting via WPA2. When I set Internet Sharing to use WEP (by option-clicking the security menu), I'm then able to see the network shares and the printer.

  • Setting for 'Connect Oracle Via Internet'

I want to connect my oracle server 10g via internet by creating service using static/dynamic IP

    piyukharwar wrote:
I want to connect my oracle server 10g via internet by creating service using static/dynamic IPThis is no different than normal LAN IP connectivity. IP is IP - whether over a LAN, WAN of the Internet. The client IP needs connectivity to the server IP. Ther server IP needs to be able to respond to the client IP.
There are certain restrictions though - such as private IP address ranges that are not supported and routed on the Internet.
If you for example use such an IP address for your database service, you will need to enable NAT firewalling on your Internet router - allowing for example connections from the net to your router's tcp port 1521, where the router will NAT these to your database server (running a private IP) on port 1521.
Word of warning though - usually not a good idea to expose your database directly to the Internet. You need to harden the Listener and the database if you want to do this in a safe and secure manner. And consider using encrypted IP connectivity for running OCI client-server connections across.

  • Acessing home iMac with MacBook from remote location via internet????

Is there a way to access files on my iMac at home with my MacBook via the internet as I do when I'm at home through my network?
    Thanks, Jason

    Hi Jason,
Funny, we were just working on this topic. I'm assuming your iMac is behing a router, and it does NAT. An indicator would be if your iMac's IP address was something like 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x. In that case, the best way is to set up port forwarding in your router.
Assuming you want to share files using Apple File Protocol, you need to forward port 548 from your router to port 548 on your iMac. Other protocols use different ports, but you didn't specify. I don't know what router you've got, so I don't how to configure it. It's probably got a web interface.

  • Accessing Server when only connected via Internet Sharing

Currently, I don't have the ability to directly connect my Mac Pro which I use as a Server to the router as I have no direct access to it via cable and it does not have an Airport card.
However, I can access the internet on it if I use internet sharing on my iMac which is connected via Gigabit Ethernet to the Mac Pro at all times.
In order to use any of the services such as Time Machine from another machine, I always need to connect it directly by cable. This leaves me wondering if there is a way to tunnel the Mac Pro through the iMac so it is accessible via Wifi? Is there a setting on either Machine I have to activate / set to make this work?
It is only thought to be a temporary solution until I move to a new flat where it will be directly connected to an Airport Extreme.
    Thanks for your help!

Seems that the issue is something to do with connecting via WPA2. When I set Internet Sharing to use WEP (by option-clicking the security menu), I'm then able to see the network shares and the printer.

  • Mac pro no longer connects to web via internet sharing

My Mac Pro does not have an airport card so I have often used a PowerBook G4 or MacBook Pro to share a wireless internet connection via ethernet. A few months ago this method began failing but I was able to share a connection via firewire. Now I am not able to do either.
I have attempted to use both the mbp and the pbg4 to no avail using both ethernet and firewire for days, employing various troubleshooting methods including zapping PRAM, repairing permissions, and dumping network cache. I've tried static IP addresses and manual setups. The mac pro shows that it is connected to a network and displays all the proper IP information but is unable to load a web page and the diagnostics window shows an ISP, server, and internet failure regardless of any changes I make to network settings on it or the mbp/pbg4. Meanwhile, the laptops are connected to the internet just fine and are able to share a connection with each other.
What can I do to make my tower susceptible to internet sharing once again?

Your local LAN runs through your router.
All your ethernet  ports, and your modem and router, should be behind and filtered from excess current. That means a UPS generally. And run input line thru UPS (coax) first, then run RJ45 back through UPS again (there can still be excess surge or current on the line).
Modems and routers can be compromised by surge outage or storm. So can ethernet  ports.
You have two ethernet ports and you tried with both also.
What you did not do that I would have added is SMC Reset / Reset NVRAM/PRAM.
This is what I have had for the last year, very nice and stronger  signals thruout the house.

  • I can't download apps to my iPad via Internet sharing (Lion) anymore

I always use my Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard to share my Internet connection with my iPad 2. However, since I upgraded to Lion, my iPad 2 can't seem to download apps thru Internet Sharing anymore. If I use our office WiFi, the App download works fine. But when I connect using Internet Sharing again, it doesn't download the apps.
Interestingly, all my other apps (in the iPad) that require internet connectivity works really well. Only the app store can't download, it surfs really fast though when I want to view an app. ONLY the download is not working right.
    Any thoughts?

Close all the apps in the recents tray on your iPad, reboot again, and see if that solves either problem.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Since it will not hurt anything, you could try resetting your router as well. Unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.

  • Can't see printer or shares when connected via Internet Sharing

I recently switched from a 2006 to a 2008 Mac Pro. Rather than do a migration I simply took the hard drives from the old machine and put them in the new one.
I then upgraded to Mountain Lion.
I use Internet Sharing to share my Mac Pro's Ethernet connection via wifi, but the other Macs can't see the Mac Pro's printer or shares when connected in this way. They can access the internet. If I connect a machine via the LAN rather than Internet Sharing, the shares and printer are visible.
This worked fine on Lion on the old machine. Any ideas?

Seems that the issue is something to do with connecting via WPA2. When I set Internet Sharing to use WEP (by option-clicking the security menu), I'm then able to see the network shares and the printer.
