IMac CRT and iTunes

Hello. I have a 350 Mhz Blueberry slot-loading iMac that I have just upgraded by installing an 80GB HD and OS X.2.8. I am running minimum RAM right now (128MB) with an upgrade coming soon. My question is - I want to run iTunes and buy music from the iTunes store. The OS X.2 came with iTunes 3, which doesn't even show the Store as a browsing option. I don't have the minimum processor speed nor the CD burner required by iTunes 6. But I do have an iPod Shuffle, a USB port and an iTunes gift certificate. Can I upgrade to a newer version of iTunes that is not 6? Can I load my Shuffle from my trusty old CRT iMac (previously, I was using my husband's PC laptop, not my favorite thing)? If there is another version that I can use, does anyone have a download link.
Thanks for any help.

Hi
I'm not sure what the min spec speed is for iTunes 6 but it's running here on a 400MHz iMac (Mind you - I have no sound out - but that's a different problem!) and the store is available - I seem to remember it came along with iTunes 4.
Your ipod shuffle will work OK plugged into your imac - it just will be a little slower loading up than if it was plugged into a mac with USB2 - I presume it will charge OK.

  • IMac CRT and VGA adapters

I would like to connect an iMac CRT to a SMARTBoard. The SMARTBoard has a VGA connection. Someone at the Apple Store told me that I didn't need an adapter b/c the CRTs had VGA connections. I have checked several iMac CRTs from various years, and I have only found USB, Firewire, ethernet, phone line, microphone, and speaker connections. Does anyone know of a way to connect these old iMacs to VGA cords?
    Thanks

It's also possible with a tray loader but you'd need a "old Mac" to VGA adapter >and I've never done it. I have some set up on my workbench. I'll go try it right >now and see how it looks.
Yup that works fine. You pull the access panel by removing one screw and pull that hatch with the small handle. The video cable is the rectangular one with the two clamping screws.(be careful tightening those, it's easy to snap them at their shoulders) You pull that off and plug you adapter in there.
The problem will be finding the right adapter with the proper resolution and sync. I have some adjustable ones with mini dip switches that are very handy.

  • Multiple iMac users and iTunes

I have setup our iMac with multiple users. I migrated all our digital music to one user and found all the cover art, etc to make it work well. Now I want to allow all the other users to access that music library. I have tried everything from adding the files from a shared folder to exporting it to physically copying all the files and cover art to a different folder for each user. Exporting doesn't work at all, and there doesn't seem to be a way to simply share the same music files across users on an iMac. The closest was physically copying the files, but that means gigabytes of duplicated files for each user, and it still loses some of the covert art. There has to be a solution to this, or Apple has missed a critical function for the multiple user feature. Please help.

    Quit iTunes.
Move \Music\iTunes\ folder to the Shared folder.
Hold Option when starting iTunes and select *Choose existing library* then select the iTunes library file in \Shared\iTunes\.
iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time so each will need to quit iTunes when they are off the computer.

  • ITunes 1080p download playback on latest iMac (2012) and iTunes v11 64-Bit

I've recently bought the new iMac (top of the range 2012 version) and am running all the lates software, including iTunes 11 under 64 Bit.
I thought I would re-organise my iTunes library, deleting SD and 720p files and re-downloading the 1080p version from iTunes. All is great, except I get the QuickTime error when trying to play back the file. This is weird because I can play the file OK as it's downloading, it only has a problem once it's completed the download and the file is processed. I don't want to switch my iTunes to 32 Bit to play them back. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Reading this thread, i realize my response doesn't make a lot of sense.  Sorry 'bout that. I've been deesperately searching for help to get my iTunes running again and i've tried many different things. No such luck so far.

  • Networking iMac intel(OSX4.4), iMac CRT(OS9.2), printer, scanner, and cable

I am trying to set up a network with my new iMac Core Duo and my old iMac CRT and a printer and a scanner. I want the printer and scanner to work with both computers, and for the Core Duo to be the one connected with the internet via cable. (My ISP will only allow one computer to be connected.) I also want the two computers to be able to work with each other's files. The Core Duo has OSX 4.4 and the iMac CRT has OS 9.2. Previously, I had two iMac CRT's working on a network as just described. I was using a 5 port hub.
Now, my question is: Can this be done? I have tried everything I could think of, but have had no luck. I can get one or the other computer to work the internet, which is fine, but I can't get them to talk to one another. At one time I managed to get the iMac CRT's icon to appear of the Core Duo's desktop, and could pass stuff one direction, but I could not get the Core Duo's icon to appear on the CRT's desktop.
Another problem: Each computer has a single Ethernet port so I can't tie them together directly and still access the modem. Can I tie the stuff together using Ethernet cables? There are plenty of Ethernet ports available.
Is there some website I can go to to get educated about this?
This is the longest question I have seen on this discussion forum!

Sounds like you need a router. Connect the modem and the Macs to the router so both of your machines have internet access. The modem will assign a single IP to the router and then the router will assign IPs to the Macs. You can also connect the printer to the router so both machines have access. I'm not sure about the scanner though as I've never seen one with ethernet connections.

  • Picture quality of DVDs and iTunes HD video on my iMac less than other macn

    Hi,
This might be difficult to help with, but I've been concerned about this for some.
The picture quality of DVDs (retail movies) and iTunes HD video look far superior on my mother's and sister's laptops than on my iMac. Even a movie I just recorded off TV looks way better on our old CRT TV than on my Mac.
I can't find any way to adjust settings.
Can anybody help? What info do I need to give to help you help me?
    Regards

I'm not exactly sure what you are describing, but you can consider the following...
Laptops have smaller screens, with higher pixel density (smaller pixels). Also DVDs are typically something line 720x480 resolution. When you spread those pixels out on a larger iMac screen, especially one that is 24-inch 1920x1200, it will look less sharp. The screen may be larger, but the quality of the video image stays the same.
A 8"x11" photograph, may look fine at that size. But if you blow it up to poster size, it will probably look terrible.
iTunes HD is usually 1280x720. That should look pretty good on an iMac's larger screen. But if you are comparing (side-by-side) how sharp the same video looks on a small laptop screen, it will look sharper on the small screen with less area and smaller pixels. But if you back up a few feet from the iMac when you are using +full screen+ mode (to TV viewing distance), it should look about the same.
Even a movie I just recorded off TV looks way better on our old CRT TV than on my Mac.
CRT TV's are optimized to show motion, with a technique called interlacing. If you freeze a frame (pause), it will look terrible. Since an iMac's display will not use interlacing, the same video will not look as good, especially when the size is increased. The quality of showing the same video on an iMac will be impacted by the method used to transfer it to the iMac. If it is encoded to a digital format, there will be loss of quality in that process.

  • Green Screen and Freezing on G3 iMac CRT

Hi - My son's Snow Slot Load 500mxh G3 iMac has recently developed some problems. It happened not long after updating to Tiger but seems not to be related to that. I installed the firmware upgrade before updating and the install went fine. It was working fine for a few weeks but started freezing up at random times requiring the power button to be held to restart. It would then restart and work fine but over the last couple weeks, the freeze ups have become so frequent that it's basically not worth bothering with. The freeze ups seem to have some sort of mechanical aspect to them - there is an actual flash or flicker or surge type thing as if the power was interupted. I have plugged the iMac into different power sources, etc. to be sure that it isn't somehow something in the houses wiring but that has not effect. In addition, in the last week or so, the screen has taken on a pronounced green cast. At first this problem was intermitent but now is pretty much permanent (it did come on once properly) It still works fine in terms of resolution, positioning, etc., no weird artifacts, just green. Both of the problems persist even if the iMac is started in OS9 or from a CD. I ran the Apple Hardware Diag CD and it gave a clean bill of health on everything....hmmm!
My guess is that it is a hardware problem and the obvious choice would be the video board. I don't want to put it out to pasture since it works great for my son but I also don't want to put bunches of time and $$$ into it swapping out different boards to try to figure the problem. Does anyone know any fairly definitive tests to determine if it is the Video board or, if not, what it is?
Thanks in advace for any help.

both the CRT and at least the High Voltage section of the PAV are likely bad. Right?<</div>
No only the PAV sounds like it's going bad. The fact that the CRT lights up means that it's good. The silver box on the back of the CRT that Apple refers to as the Video Board is part of the PAV. In fact when you replace the PAV you want to keep that same Video Board with the CRT so it involves cutting and splicing of 2 wires.
Let the HV on the PAV die and use an external Monitor<</div>
Most likely it's the flyback transformer on the PAV that is going and when that goes it's usually it's the Anode section that dies.
If I go with one of the options using an external Monitor, do I need to disconnect the internal CRT? I mean, I know that I don't have to disconnect the internal CRT to use an external Monitor but would it be better to?<</div>
Well if the Anode section dies then mute point because the HV will be gone anyway.
Replace the PAV, use an external Monitor<</div>
If you replace the PAV (deadly voltages involved! Also working PAVs are hard to come by) you wouldn't need an external monitor because the internal one would then work. My son has a 700 Snow that I dropped a DVD-ROM from a 500 Graphite into. Had to use Pacifist to get it to work. Hooked up an external LCD. Now he's watching Pirates II in stereo. He also uses it for Garage Band.

  • HT4889 How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

If the Migration Assistant won't do it, move them over as you would any other folder; they're located in the Pictures and Music folders of your home folder by default. The iPhoto library needs to be transferred via a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended or through an AFP network share.

  • Adding a second household iMac under my owner name and iTunes account?

We have 2 iMac's in the house. To simplify things, I added all the household iphones and ipads and ipods of the family only to my imac machine, and only under my itunes account.
So when ever the family wants to add apps, movies, anything in itunes, I use my only imac to do this since all itunes purchaes are only under my one itunes account. All our household-family i-Devices are registered under my itunes account, so that everything I purchased can be easily added or shared between any one of the household i-devices.
But.... on our second household imac, that iMac was originally registered under one of the kids name. They do not use itunes on their iMac (the second machine).
If they want music or movies, or apps added to their iphone, we plug that into my imac only so everything can be shared via only my itunes account (remember, all the iphones and ipads are registered to my itunes account only).
So they never plug their i-Devices into the second household imac, only mine.
Soooo.... I was wondering if I factory-restore the second household imac, fire it up, and re-register that second Imac under my name and itunes acct, would this make it possible to also share all of my itunes purchases (mirror) onto that second iMac in the house?
So in that way, they could use the second iMac and itunes mirrored on the second machine (having re-registered to my account) to load itunes stuff onto their i-Devices?
In other words, if a person had two imacs that they owned, both registered to one owner, then signed into itunes on both machines with only their itunes account info, would that extend the itunes stuff in iMac #1 to iMac #2?
Like having two or more iPhones under one itunes account (for sharing purchases), does this method also work for two (or more) iMacs as if both were owned by one person.
I know.... there are probably other ways to share itunes purchases between machines and different accounts, but I hoped to keep it simple. Just have both imacs under my name, my one itunes account. Wouldn't that be fairly easy?
When we added the other iPads and iPhones under my machine, under my itunes account, that method has worked great for sharing.
So if someone wants songs. movies, whatever purchased under my itunes account, added to their i-Device, they just bring it to me and tell me what they want as far as music/apps/movies, and I easily add it to their i-Device. No pain, no sweat.
I just wanted to "also" add that ability to a second imac in the house. And thought to do so, I could just factroy-restore that second imac, and re-register it under my name only, both machine now under one owner. Then fire up itunes and sign into my itunes account on the second machine.
PS. factory restoring this second iMac is not an issue since about the only thing we would have to save off and transfer are their safari bookmarks.
Oh.... And since my iMac has been updated to Lion via the app store, could a second machine registered under my name also share that same app store Lion upgrade? Or is Lion one upgrade per machine, per the same owner? Not installable on two machines, under that same owner?
(Buying Lion a second time is no big beal, however)
But mainly, my question is with re-registering that second iMac under my name, as with the first imac.
Or think of it as if I were to buy someones used iMac, and add it to my ownership.
Can iTunes then be shared or mirrored between two iMac's? One owner?

I guess my issue then is just with itunes...
I was looking at the solution the long way around originally, I guess.
I read somewhere that one could have 5 computers (iMac's in my case) under one itunes account.
But the i-Devices can only be linked or synced to one computer.
    Sounds fair.
So... on this second iMac, how can I mirror my itunes media to that second machine?
    The easiest way.
    Can that be done?
So my itunes media can be accessed on both iMac's?
That second iMac can be apple-registered to the other family member, and still can be setup to acces "my" itunes media?
BTW.... I do have my itunes media-purchases on an external hard drive already. Always have done it that way.
I was hoping I could "share" that itunes media drive between the two machines. My itunes account.
So no matter what computer a device (iphone) is synced to, the same "itunes" media will be available for syncing,
    mirrored, between the two computers?

There is no problem about using one ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match, and another for iCloud and its email and syncing facilities. This way you can all use the same iTunes account but have separate emails and calendars etc.

  • How do I remove my old iMac from my App Store and iTunes Store accounts?

Before I sold my friend my old iMac, I used the Migration Assistant to transfer all her files from her MacBook Pro to the iMac. I then deleted all my files. My old iMac and her MacBook Pro were both upgrated to Mavericks before the Migration.
Now, she is being prompted to download and install the updates for Numbers and Pages on what used to be my iMac, but the App Store displays my account identification and asks for my password.
    (1) How can I delete my old iMac from my App Store and iTunes Store accounts?
    (2) How can she access the App Store and iTunes Store using her own accounts?
    Thanks in advance.

That isn't how to prepare a Mac to sell or give away. You should deauthorize your iTunes account on the Mac. Call Apple Care and have the Mac disassociated from your Apple ID. Then erase the Mac and install the latest version of OS X that shipped installed on the Mac using the Install DVD or OS X Recovery, depending on what version shipped on the Mac. Until you do this, the Mac, OS X and the iLife apps belong to you. She will need to buy the iWork apps for herself, using her own account. You cannot pass any apps that you bought on to her, that would be piracy.

  • How can I sync my photo contents in iPhoto on my iMac to my new iPAD's iPhoto?  I follwed all the instructions on manuals for both iPAD and iTunes re syncing, but I cannot find "phone button" under Device name on iTunes page. Please help!  Thanks!

I follwed all the instructions on manuals for both iPAD and iTunes re syncing, but after physically connecting iPAD with iMac with USB or via WiFi I still cannot find "phone button" under Device name on iTunes page. Please help!  Thanks!
I have been creating a photo book using a lots of photographs on iPhoto, and then I took another photos by using new iPAD which I want to integrate with the original album/book on iMac. I was able to import them from iPAD's iPhoto to iMac's iPhoto.  However I cannot import or transfer or sync anything from iMac's iPhoto to that of my iPAD.
So my iPhoto page on iPAD contains only 3 or 4 newly created albums, and no other info.  That means no syncing....
I am supposed to be able to work on this project on either of these iPAD and iMac, correct?
I am puzzled.  I appreciate for your advice and help.
    Thank you!

It doesn't appear under the iPad device on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes, you need to select the iPad device on the sidebar and then select the Photos tab on the right-hand side of iTunes e.g.
And then on the right-hand side :

  • Homesharing: fail to synch music between iPad3, iMac 10.5.8 with iTunes 10.6.1, and iBook on 10.4.11 and iTunes 9.

I would love some ideas: Cannot get home-sharing to show me any existing iTunes content stored on either of the computers, on my new iPad. Homeshare works between the two comps, (and Apple TV, although unreliably.) Aware of the need to use one identical user ID to sign in to all and iTunes. MacBook currently on OS 10.4.11 with iTunes 9, an iMac OSX 10.5.8 w/iTunes 10.6.1. iPad 3.  My last resorts are to buy Snow Leopard x 2, Buy Lion x 2, and then move to iCloud (losing my iWeb maintenance - disappointed - is Apple giving up all web maintenance capability - or is there an alternative iI am missing?) and then after iCloud move, "hope" that it can all interact better - but not sure why.
Currently the iPad can "see" that the iMac homeshare is there - if I click on the 'more' option, then folllow the 'shared' and select iMac all I see after the spinning wheel is a blank grey screen with iMac written at the top, and a few icons in top and bottom bars. I have tried resetting the iPad, switching the server and computers all off and changing user ID and passwords to all synch. No luck yet. Any ideas?

    1. Yes, you need to buy a new OS. Mac OS X 10.6 requires a Mac with an Intel CPU and at least 1GB of RAM.
    2. It won't erase your files unless a problem occurs. Back up everything anyway; this can be done with Time Machine or by creating a bootable clone, and requires an external drive.
