IMac dead screen

The display on my sisters 17' 2006 iMac died completely and Apple has quoted me £350 for a replacement. Could I buy any other VGA display and hook it up with one of Apples display adapters and use it with the external display? Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear that. Just got my new iMac and it doesn't work "out of the box". Been on the phone with Apple Support for a number of hours and they just told me to take it to service. This after waiting a number of weeks to get the new computer. Really regreating having switched to Apple now. I bet Dell doesn't have these problems.

IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive - which is still working? I took it to the Apple store and they quoted $500+to replace the monitor. No help as usual. Can I buy a MAC compatible monitor ($189) and use it as a primary monitor? Can I set it up if the screen on the IMAC is dead? Any other solutions?

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • Imac (with dead screen) file transfer to macbook

    Hello
I recently bought a replacement macbook. my imac's screen one night slanted diagonally and froze and when turned off and on the screen never came back. i tried hooking up external monitors to see if it was just a screen problem, unfortunately no. based on different tests and the type of imac i believe that the files are still safe and secure, the computer turns on fine but i have no way of seeing the folders and files, like the migration assistant. i have no idea what to do and i would prefer to do it myself than have apple charge me money for it.
    thanks

I'm not sure what you want but if you want to transfer the files off the imac you should be able to use migration assistant. reboot the imac and hold "t" at the chime. this will boot it in target mode. connect it to the new macbook and start migration assistant on the macbook (it's in /Applications/Utilities). this will let you transfer user data and applications to the macbook.

  • 20" G4 dead screen :( please help

    Hi guys,
A friend of mine has given me what he thought was a dead iMac G4, he thought it was dead as nothing appears on the screen. I've bought and connected a mini vga to VGA on it and run it through my 22" Samsung and it booted to the CD so I've installed Leopard on it and upgraded the ram to 1.25Gb, I'd really like to get the screen back working on it and have tried various things, reset the PRAM and the PMU but no joy. I'm thinking it could be the inverter anyone got any other suggestions or ways I could prove what is wrong as I don't want to buy the inverter to find out it is a dead screen although the screen backlight appears to work. I'm based in the UK so finding an inverter for a 20" may be difficult ??
I guess I could try fitting my 22" screen to the arm instead for turn it into a Mac Dome
    Thanks in advance.

If you can find someone with another Mac, you might be able to back up your important files using Target Disk Mode, instructions here: Transferring files between two computers using FireWire
    To transfer files using FireWire:
Shut down the first computer and leave the second computer on.
Connect the two computers using a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. (If both computers have higher-speed FireWire 800 ports in addition to the standard FireWire 400 ports, you can use a 9-pin to 9-pin cable with the FireWire 800 ports to transfer data at higher speeds.)
Open System Preferences, click the Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start up the first computer while holding down the T key.)
A disk icon for the first computer appears on the desktop on the second computer. Drag files to and from the disk to transfer them.
When you finish, eject the first computer's disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
Push the power button on the first computer to shut it down and disconnect the FireWire cable.

  • External monitor for macbook pro with dead screen

Macbook pro built in 2007 has a dead screen but is otherwise ok. Connected external monitor displays only the astral starburst screen on all macs. How can I get the monitor to display my desktop if I can't see the macbook screen?

Connected external monitor displays only the astral starburst screen on all macs.
Then it is working as designed.
By default, the external screen is combined with the built-in screen into an Extended Desktop, as seen in the Arrange tab below. You need to (Gather Windows) to get all controls on all displays, then drag the tiny white MenuBar to the display where you want it to appear. Then things will begin to operate as you expect.

  • Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?

My screen sharing functionality did not show up in the dock with an updated icon.  It had a question mark- shows my connections but nothing works, I did make sure screen sharing is on and also connected to VPN.  Once I tried to launch screen sharing nothing happens.  Such an elegant solution in Mavericks not does not work. Ugh. Help!

This is the post that got me set up- I too am running an older version at work vs. Yosemite. As soon as I followed is advice everything worked.
Upgraded to Yosemite and can no longer remote into my work iMac through screen sharing- it is turned on in settings?
I believe the location of the "Screen Sharing" app has changed, which explains why if you had it in the dock it has been replaced by a ?
Don't forget you can launch screen sharing (once your VPN connection is up) by typing in the Safari destination slot vnc://remotemachinename:portnumber  (omit the :port number if you are using the default VNC port, 5900).  This should launch Screen Sharing and put its icon in the dock.  You can drag the Screen Sharing icon to the left of your dock and it will hopefully remain there after you exit Screen Sharing, or you can right-click on the icon when it's running and select Options->Show in Finder to find out its new location and drag its icon to the permanent entries in your dock.
Hope this helps; worked for me.

  • How do I transfer files from PowerBook to MacBook. (dead screen PB)

Problem is, the PowerBook 1400C has a dead screen. So I can
boot it up, but that's it. Is there a way to hook up the MacBook
to the PB so the PB is seen as an external hard drive? There
are no firewire or usb ports on the PB 1400. Just want to get
    some documents off of it.

I think you'll have to take the hard drive out and install it in an external enclosure.
Target disk mode won't work on Macs that are old enough to lack a native firewire port. And if the screen is dead, I don't see how you could connect via ethernet and enable file sharing.
Edit: From googling, I see that a video out port was optional on (some?) PB 1400's. If you have one, can you get it to boot with a monitor? Then file sharing would be an option.

  • Please Help: iMac black screens after startup logo + spinning wheel no cursor).

    Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
    ,c.

  • My i Pod touch still works but it has a dead screen! How can i fix this??!!

I just got the iPod for Christmas last year but recently my little brother dropped it and it became a dead screen! How can i fix this problem?! HELP!!!!!!!!

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price (for 4G iPod, $199 for 64 GB and $99 for the others). They do not fix yours.

  • NVRAM issues, then dead screen

My girlfriend's Macbook Pro, a 2009 Core 2 Duo 2.16ghz, went totally dead about a month ago. After doing some research, I found that resetting the NVRAM (Command+Option+P+R) seemed to get it running again. We'd have to do this once a week or so. And while I assumed the problem might get worse, I hoped that it would stay ok.
Of course, it didn't. Recently, it went dead, and when we reset the NVRAM, the computer seemed to start up again, but with a dead screen. I tried to output video via DVI, but that was dead too.
It's an old laptop, and I'm inclined to say that it's a lost cause - however, it died in such an odd fashion that at the very least, i'm curious about what was going on. Does anyone have any insight? FWIW, it had a 3rd-party battery in it, and I noticed that the NVRAM wasn't resetting when the battery was out and the computer was plugged in.
    Thanks!
    Tyler

You nailed it, Apple can change OS and firmware and the cause problems for third party battery makers.

  • 6120c dead screen

My 6120 classic will have a dead screen after hours of inactivity, phone still on as I can receive phone calls (key pad lights on)? any help ?

Please make a backup if you didn't do it yet, when the screen still on. This procedure will format your phone & put it to factory default & install fresh firmware.
This procedure works with S60 phones only:
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), * button, and '3' button.
    3. While holding these buttons, press the power button and switch on the phone.
    4. When the message 'Formatting' appears on the screen, release all of the buttons.
    Goodluck!
Knowledge not shared is knowledge wasted!
If you find it helpfull, it's not hard to click the STAR..

  • 6030 dead screen

I have Mobile 6030 with dead screen, i can't see any thing, i want to copy all the contacts from the Phone to the SIM card, can any one help me the way to do that with steps as i can't see any thing.
I want someone to tell how , like press menu  then press 3 and scroll down twice and so on
    it URGENT for me

Yes, it's possible that your external display is working just fine but that there may be a problem with the screen. How recently did you have the screen repaired? There should be some sort of warranty on the repair (if done by Apple, 90 days).
Did the Apple tech tell you why he/she suspected that you have a bad logic board? If your GPU were damaged you wouldn't be able to view the external display. And the GPU on your model is an integrated GPU, not a discrete GPU.
Call back about the logic board replacement suggestion, at least.

  • IMac 27 screen went blank installing snow leopard

My iMac 24 screen went blank installing snow leopard. Should I wait? I wish this **** machine ha a HDD light like a PC.

You can attempt to reset the PRAM in the machine, but it looks as though there's a hardware problem. It's actually kind of difficult to determine if it's the graphics hardware or the mainboard, but neither are really servicable. You'll want to take it to get serviced.

  • IMac 27inch screen shutoff

hi my iMac 27inch screen shutoff automatically. Sometimes I can wake the screen up again but sometimes I can't. Sometimes the screen just turns back on after a few minutes. I sent it back to the place I bought it. They say the either the motherboard or the screen is broken. I have to pay something around 800 dollars to repair it. It almost half price of the computer. Is there any other solution to my problem?

Only if they are wrong about the screen or motherboard being broken.
How old is it? And you did not get apple care when you bought it?
Had you gone to system preferences>energy saver and adjust the time before the screen sleeps?
The "turns back on" kind of is a bad sign for you though... Sorry I am unable to help at ALL.

    Hi Brett L,
thank you for the coordination of this helpful thread. Are you Apple? If yes, please allow me to ask you three questions:
    1) The Display Firmware stopped for over 90% the flicker issue, but what has this Firmware changed exactly?
    2) Is Apple preparing a fix for the yellow tinge?
    3) When will it be save to buy a new iMac?
    Thank you for your efforts.
    Hello Citrus.
    Excellent questions.
I hope that Apple will authorize Brett L. to provide us with some clear, honest answers to them . . . although, as I pointed out before, it would seem by the latest messages that have been posted in this thread -- that is, the *original thread* -- that through their actions, Apple has already provided us with their answer -- and solution -- to the yellow tinge issue; and that is the replacement of the LCD panel.
As to what the most recent display firmware update did, I am doubtful that Apple will allow Brett to reveal that kind of information, but we can be hopeful.
As far as when it will be safe to purchase a new iMac, I seriously doubt that Apple will say anything which would suggest that it is not safe to purchase a new iMac now. What company is going to say "Don't buy our product now. It's not safe"?
For my part, I have now contacted Apple regarding the issues that I am having with my 27" iMac, and I will wait over the next few days to see how things play out. Based on the testimonies of others here, I don't expect Apple to disappoint. I have the confidence that they want to leave me a satisfied customer who will continue to purchase their products in the future.
