Imac desktop has no icons when I plug into a different monitor
The monitor has gone out on my Imac. I need it this weekend so I didn't let the Apple store keep it. However, when I plug another monitor into it, all I get is a desktop with no icons. Can I get this thing running?

Which exact iMac, there are tons & they're all different.
Sounds like it's in extended Desktop or Spanning mode, all icons, Dock, Menubar are on the other Monitor still.
A slim possibility would be to try CMD+a and try dragging from the top right of your invisible screen to your visible screen to the right... see if you get at least an HD icon to work from.
Try holding the Shift key at Bootup if that doesn't work.

Sporadic mouse when mbp plugged into an *off* monitor
Hey all, strange glitch I keep noticing on my mbp.
If I attach a monitor to it and then turn off the screen the mouse with every so often jump around the screen when I try to use it.
I recall my old PowerBook never did this. I always like to have my monitor plugged in but I don't always use it.
Anyone else experience this?I am not sure that you DO need the MacBook plugged in. At least with the macBookPro and my previous PowerBook, I would often run either a monitor or an overhead projector solely on the battery.
As the others have already suggested looking at the temperatures, let me add to that. First you can download a widget called iStat nano from the Apple (Dashboard) Downloads page. That will help you monitor temperatures and fan speeds.
Additionally, start up the Activity Monitor (in Applications>Utilities) and you can check to see if there is any runaway process.
I find that the fans do run faster when the charger/power supply is running but the fans are well able to cope. It sounds exciting when they get up to 5500rpm but my MacBookPro is not giving me any problems in that (or any other) area. -

The iPhone communcates differently from iPods, so the fact that an iPod connects is no guarantee that everything is working. -
FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in external drive

FINDER disappears, along with desktop icons, when I plug in an external memory card from my Nikon camera. This also happens regardless of which USB port I plug it in to. It didn't happen when I installed Leopard two weeks ago, but happens all the time now.
Interestingly, the desktop icons (hard drives and files) DO show up when I open any software program and try to open up a file. The hard drives and files show up in the Open File windows.

JonTHANK YOU! I've been having the same problem, and the solution you linked to worked perfectly for me. Somehow, my computer's sharing name had been deleted. Once I put that back in the file sharing preference I was able to reconnect my external drive without all Hades breaking loose.
This problem came on the heels of an aborted attempt to use a new Time Capsule (not ready for prime time) which I had to drive 50 miles to take back and replace with a new WD My Book -and I was afraid I was going to have to repeat the trip to take it back as well. -
I saved docs from a iMac to a flashdrive but when I plug the flashdrive into an iBookG4 and try to open the docs on the flashdrive, I get this message: Doc 2 cannot be opened. The required index.xml file is missing. Does this mean that I can't use the info on the flashdrive with the iBookG4 or can I do something to get the required index.xml file?

jtIt appears if you write the document with newer version Pages and try to open it older version Pages.

when i turn my iphone 4 on, it comes up with a picture of a cord connecting to an itunes icon. when i plug it into my pc, it says the settings on my iphone need to be restored. but i dont want to restore it as will lose everything on it. what shall i do?
You have no chose but to restore your phone. What do you mean "lose everything"? Is your data/iTunes content not on your computer?

Why can I not import the videos from my iPhone 4 onto my desktop (Windows Vista)? When I plug in it imports the photos without a problem but it doesn't seem to import the videos.

my ipad mini has water damage but when I plug into wall it says to connect to itunes. When I plug into Mac nothing happens. Not even a charging sign and nothing happens with itunes. Computer doesn't recognize it's plugged in.
If moisture got inside, it may have shorted the iPad's electronics.

I tried to update my iPhone 5 this morning with the new software update. Now my phone won't turn on. When I plug into iTunes, it says that my phone is in recovery mode and that it needs to be restored to factory settings. Is there a way to fix this without losing my settings? Why would this happen on a software update?

That is not what it says. Read the message again. It's telling you it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and it must be restored.

I have songs on my iPhone 6 that I can't remove and when I plug into iTunes and go to "Summary" and "On This Device" the songs don't show up but they are on my phone. How do I remove them? Not even sure how they got on actually since I have a iTouch and keep all my music there. HELP!!
Have you tried deleting the songs from Settings?
Settings -> General -> Usage -> Manage Storage (not the iCloud link!) -> Music and then click Edit to enable you to be able to delete. -
