Imac desktop is making real loud fan sound?

The imac screen went blank & black & when it came back on the fan is running really fast & loud. What's going on??

It crashed or shutdown due to possibly heat.
Have you blown the dust out lately? Let it cool for an hour & see if you can get these...
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

  • Anyone encounter loud fan sound upon power up?

    Hi,
When I power up my iMac, I encountered a very loud fan sound in the background that I had never encountered before.
This happens despite turning off and powering up again.
Any idea what's happening?  And how to remedy the situation?
    Regards.

I would recommend downloading and running the popular, useful and FREE "iStat Pro" to see what the actual temperatures of your computer's inner components are. Then post the data here for us to see and comment.  You'll find it here:

  • I turned on my new imac for the first time and it is making a loud fan noise please help

I just got a new computer and when I turned it on for the first time it started making a loud fan noise. the noise seems like it is coming from the back speaker. and it does not make the noise on sleep mode.

Connect the iPad to a USB 2.0 port your computer with the cable and iTunes should launch and it will take you through the process step by step.
I assume that your computer meets the requirements and that you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer.

  • My ibook G4 won't start it shows black screen and loud fan sound only

my ibook G4 won't start, after you press the on key it makes a loud air sound, almost like a kernel panic sound, no screen light just the sound, it will turn off by pressing the on key again. Is there anything I can do to get it on?

    Your very welcome.
You would need to apply pressure to the left side of the track pad about 2cm out. I found applying pressure to both sides of the track pad more successful. All you have to do is push down on the case, while making sure your iBook is on a flat surface. If you have someone willing to help you, you can get them to apply the pressure while you back up your files. Other methods would involve tempory repair or removal of the hard drive. If you remove the hard drive to be read by another computer, you would need a cady to put the drive into. These caddies are cheap enough. Would suggest you use a USB cady and plug your drive into that, which would act as USB external drive. I'd suggest you get a USB cady to remove your files, be careful to what operating system you have on the computer you are using to get the files off. Windows OS won't read a MAC OS X drive (extended journal format) It would need to be another  Mac or a Linux PC.
If removing the hard drive is something your not to confident in doing, you could alway pay a computer repair shop to remove it for you. (Maybe they would have a USB cady for a 2.5 IDE hard )

Let's hope just applying enough pressure is enough to get your files back up.
    Best of luck!

  • Very loud fan sound, can't get video, system still running...help?

I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere here or throughout google. Can't find a similar problem.
We have a G4 tower here at work that we run FileMaker server on. It pretty much just sits there and we all connect to it remotely and use the FileMaker on our own machines. It's usually not even touched unless Filemaker needs to be restarted or something along those lines. It shares a monitor with another system so its not usually even connected to a monitor.
Well - today there is a loud fan noise coming from it that we havent heard before. So we went to hook up the monitor and can't get any video. It was fine in the past week or so because we have been on it with the monitor.
FileMaker must still be running fine because we can still connect...for now...but we can't load up a screen to properly shut down, or run the backup or anything to safely turn the machine off. I am not sure which OS is currently installed because I can't get to that info.
Our guess is that the video card died, and that is the video card fan spinning...but if that were the case, would the software running still be fine like it is?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Our tech guy can't make it out until tomorrow morning and we're afraid to have to wait that long...
    Thanks in advance!

G4 tower covers a lot of G4s; it would help to have more specific model information. I think some of the later ones (not my DP800 QS) had software controlled fans. It's possible part of the operating system has crashed and the fan is automatically going into full speed to automatically prevent overheating. The rest of the OS may still be running and explaining why you can get to your files. I'm not sure about the video though. Perhaps somebody else has something more constructive but with that kind of thing I can't help but feel you'll just have to switch off the machine and restart it.

  • My new Imac 24", 2.8GHz Intel Core is suddenly making a loud fan noise

    Please help!
This Imac is only a week old. I bought it on apple online store. This is 24" 2.8GHz Imac and it's been the best computer I've ever had. It was wonderful to work and silent until yesterday. And suddenly I can't stand the fan noise coming from my new Imac. I downloaded i-stat Pro to check the status of my computer and it reads *CPU fan:1198rpm, hard drive:1198rpm, optical drive: 4401rpm*
what is wrong with my computer?
I searched many mac forums, and I've tried many things including shutting it down and unplugging everything and replugging everything after a while, but nothing solves this problem. Does anybody have experienced this problem? I am not even using many applications. I am only using safari, and the fan is at full speed. SO LOUD! What can I do to solve this? Should I take it to apple to look at it?

    Hello lovingimac
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
That sounds like there is something wrong with the temp. sensor for the optical drive.
If carefully following the SMC reset instructions below, does not fix the fan issue:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446-en
Then yes you need to make a trip to your local Apple service center.

  • Too loud fan sound when play WOW

i have 2.66 intelmac with X1900XT. when i play WOW, the fan runs crazy.
it's too loud. is there anyway to reduce this sound?
i have 5 giga ram. thanks in advance...

i mean what is the exact name. there are some model in ac company.
    http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga1.php
looks two model fit to X1900XT model. one is Accelero S1 and the other is Accelero X2.
which one is yours? i think Accelero S1 looks far quiter because it need not fan.
but available to mac slot maybe different story.

  • Very loud fan sound after sleep when Ram is upgraded.

Recently I have upgrade the Ram memory from 1Gb to 5Gb with (2x2GB) FB-DIMM DDR2 667MHz from Ondamatica. Memory works perfectly, hardware tests were OK and i didn't notice any issue except one: after sleep, fans start to spin faster and faster (seems like a vacuum) to what I supose Is the fastest speed they support, during arround a minute or 45 seconds. That generates an intense noise but happens only when awake afer sleep, not when restarting.
I've done almost everything: reset pvram, reset SMC, change memory slots... And the issue only stops when I remove the new two Ram modules.
I've read about it in some forums, but no one solved it. ¿Any suggestion before I return the Ram to the store?. Could be a software problem?.

It will or can happen but you can reduce it somewhat maybe using SmcFanControl (2.1.3.1 - wwww.macupdate.com ) to keep the fans above default by 200 rpm. And run Hardware Monitor to monitor temps as well. They may be running much warmer than they could/should/ought to.
1GB and your system was on starvation express! ouch. 4GB is more of a normal minimum even. 4 x 1GB is nice balanced setup. 2GB DIMMs might be warmer, run 70C perhaps. And they use about 15W each.

  • My HP c4795 just started making a loud grinding sound when the paper begins to feed???

Hello, The noise then stops and the printing continues successfully.  I have had the printer about one year and it has performed perfectly until Apr 25.  What might be the issue and what can i Do?
    Thanks.
    Jamie

    Hi,
The product's rollers and gears make noise when they pick up paper. Thicker media makes more noise. If the product prints without a paper jam, the noises are normal. If the product jams, clear the paper jam.
Recommend you to try clean the rollers and try the media type and check if same is repeated.
