IMac desktop with ATT Uverse wifi conundrum

Just switched from ATT DSL to Uverse.
Original DSL setup: Ethernet from SpeedStream router to AirportX. Wifi to iMac desktop, Apple TV, and 2 iphones.
Used this same setup with the Uverse 2Wire Gateway. Everything worked fine.
Wanted to try the ATT Gateway wifi to see if it had farther reach and for future travel with the AirportX.
All devices connected fine via wifi to the 2Wire except the iMac.
The iMac showed it was on the 2Wire wifi network but pages wouldn't load.
ATT support was no help. They said desktops can't connect via wifi, only laptops. Obviously not true but since all other devices could connect to their equip they couldn't help further. They offered to send someone out but if it turned out to not be their equip I'd have to pay a fee.
Can iMacs only connect via wifi signals from AXs and AEs? Is there some setting I need to change?
Currently it's academic since our iMac is right beside the 2Wire so it can be connected by Ethernet. However, due to the old wiring in this house, if we decide to change the iMac's location we'll either have to run long Ethernet cables around the house or pay to have the other hard wiring updated.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If the issue is with the iMac connecting to your new gateway router, this article may be able to help:

Can't connect to the internet in my home yet other devices can. I tried it in other wifi places and it connects without a problem. My home wifi is with ATT Uverse. I cheched the IP address on my laptop and its different than on my Ipod although it on the same network.

Move off WEP to WPA or, preferably, to WPA2 (as recommended by Apple). WEP has been deprecated by the WiFi Alliance since 2004 as insecure (it can be cracked in seconds by any hacker).
Note that each device on a network has a unique IP address but if your address starts with 169 then you did not get a valid IP address assigned to you by your router. If restarting the router did not cure the problem then you should check for a firmware update for your router.

  • HT5706 I am trying to set up Apple TV with my Uverse WiFi, but I get errors when entering my password.  One site said that Apple TV doesn't work with WPA which Uverse uses.  Is there anyway around this or will Uverse and Apple TV just not work together.

Trying to set up Apple TV with ATT Uverse.  I get errors when trying to enter my WiFi password.  One site says that Apple TV doesn't work with Uverse because it uses WPA for encryption.  If true, does that mean Uverse subscribers cannot use Apple TV?

No, that's a rather silly conclusion.
    There are two options:
stop using the crappy router provided by the ISP.
Physically connect the ATV to the router via Ethernet.

  • Does apple tv work with att uverse

Does apple tv work well with att uverse service?

    Doubtful.
What allows for streaming content from an iPad to a television thru an Apple TV is Apple software included with iOS on the iPad and the Apple TV software. Unless there is a 3rd party android app that provides for this, no.

I keep getting this message the past week when I try to copy/paste text to Pages or upload a picture to a website chat forum. I don't know what it means, or how to correct it. I'm running a 2009 iMac desktop with OSX Lion 10.7.3  with 2 GB  Any help appreciated.

Running the Lion Os requires a MINIMUM of 2 GB of RAM, as you have.  However, with that little RAM the computer will have trouble with many memory based tasks, such as copying and pasting.  You really need to increase the amount of RAM your computer has in order to increase its speed and performance.  Now, when a task requires more RAM than your system has available then the OS will use some harddrive space temporarily instead.  This is called "Virtual Memory."  Is it possible that at this time that your harddrive is very full relative to its stated capacity, so that even "virtual memory" is not really available?  If that is the case, you really need to cleanup your harddrive by deleting a fair number of less used files.
    Hope this helps

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • How to set up time capsule with att uverse

So I'm thinking about getting a time capsule for my home network. I have several apple (Macbook pro, Ipad, Iphone) products and i think it would be convennient to have. The only problem I think I will be facing is seting up the time capsule along side with my Att uverse 2wire router. So i have several questions:
    1) I have wireless receivers for my tvs that receive the signals from the main uverse 2wire modem/router. Now I read online that you can turn of the wireless router function of the main 2wire modem/router and just turn it in to a modem (from what I understood at least). So my question is if I turn of the wirless function of the main uverse 2wire router, will that affect me watching tv with the wireless recivers that uverse provided me???
    2) I know I can probably go around the issue on question 1 by putting the time capsule in to bridge mode, but will I loose any functions on the time capsule by doing so? Will accessing the hard drive be possible if its on bridge mode?.
    3) If getting a time capsule is not worth it bacause there is no way around the issues in the first two questions then is there another product that I can use that might be better for my situation?
Im no IT genius but I know my way around so I am comfertable trying to set it up I just need some guidence. Any help will be greatly appreciated it!!

So my question is if I turn of the wirless function of the main uverse 2wire router, will that affect me watching tv with the wireless recivers that uverse provided me???
The other receivers will not work if you turn off the wireless on the Uverse gateway.
I know I can probably go around the issue on question 1 by putting the time capsule in to bridge mode, but will I loose any functions on the time capsule by doing so?
The Time Capsule will need to connect to the Uverse gateway using an Etherent cable. The Time Capsule will be able to provide another wireless network when it is set up this way, but it will not be able to provide an additional Guest Network.
Will accessing the hard drive be possible if its on bridge mode?.
    Yes
If getting a time capsule is not worth it bacause there is no way around the issues in the first two questions then is there another product that I can use that might be better for my situation?
This really depends on how many Macs that you need to back up. The Time Capsule can back up multiple Macs on a network. If you don't need that type of capability, then it would be much simpler, and a lot less expensive to connect a hard drive directly to your Mac and back up the Mac that way.
Half of the cost of the Time Capsule is tied up in a wireless router, so if you don't plan to use the wireless on the Time Capsule, you will be paying for features that you do not use.

  • Why does Mail have a difficult time with ATT Uverse?

I anyone having a problem with Mail interacting with the ATT Uverse servers?

Just had U-Verse installed at home and had problems sending email from Apple Mail. Receiving mail was not a problem; just sending. It worked fine with our previous provider Time Warner. Entering the SMTP server name, which was all we had to to do with Time Warner, did not work. We called AT&T and they said that they would fix it for a fee (talk about bad profits, right?).
Anyways, we finally got it to work and hopefully this helps resolve your issue. Here's what we did:
    1. Log in to Yahoo! with your att.net email account that came with your AT&T subscription.
    2. Once logged in, add the non-AT&T email addresses you use on Apple Mail (e.g., work email, personal mail, etc.). These additions have to be verified so check the confirmation email from U-Verse using web-based email services (e.g., mail2web.com) and click on the links.
    3. Once you've added your other emails (AT&T calls these sub-accounts) to your att.net email account, go to Apple Mail on your MacBook and add your att.net email account. Just follow the onscreen instructions and Mail will set everything up, including the SMTP server name, etc.
    4. Send a few test emails from your non-AT&T email accounts to check if they are going out and getting sent.
That's it. It's been a couple of days and it seems to be working fine.
By the way, if you've got an iPhone, simply add your AT&T email account (under Settings/Add Account, choose Other) and now you should be able to send/receive from your non-AT&T email accounts.
Hope this helps. If it does, spread the word. No one should have to pay AT&T for something that should easily work. The least AT&T can do is make sure the information to fix the issue is readily available and easily discoverable on their site. By the way, when we called them, they said that they could only support att.net email accounts, hence the fee. Hello?

Have imac desktop OS 10.6.8 with three users. two show dock items, one does not but all dock settings are the same for all three. Any suggestions as to problem solution?

I found the problem. It is in Parallels 6 application. When windows applications folder is shown in dock Parallels uses 100% cpu and somehow effects ability to show dock and it remains hidden. I expect Parallels is working on this problem.  Temporary fix is to not have folder shown, then dock returns to screen.

  • Using E1000 with ATT Uverse modem

Im trying to set up my E1000 and my wireless laptop with Windows 7 cant find the E1000. I have plugged the E1000 into a varity of electrical sockets. I even tried putting the setup disk in my desktop which is hard wired to the modem and it cant find the E1000. The Uverse is only reaching about 75 feet. I need about another 50 feet. Can anyone help me?

Hi there. Try to reset first your E1000 and with your computer getting online with your Uverse, download the updated Cisco Connect software from Cisco's homesupport.cisco.com site. After saving it, you can run it from there and just follow the instructions that it will give you. You'd be able to setup the router in no time.

  • T43 and Wireless connection with ATT Uverse

Hi geeks I am new. I have prob. I was having ATT DSL  and as I switched to ATT Uverse I have problem to connect my T43 and T41 laptops to connect via wireless connection.
I have intelPro 2200bg wireless card(internal). I read the forums and tried evrything. Finally I went to Intel wireless card update driver website and downloaded a file. ONLY T43 got connected by wireless But on the taskbar the radio shows as Off. I wonder is it connected via my bluetooth or How  and how to SWitch ON the  radio on. I went and tried to switch on Wireless radio into ON mode???
Please help geeks , as I have to fix my T41 too to connect to the ATT Uverse. The ATT tech came and he too could not fix it. When I connect via Ethernet to the router  I get 11.97 Mbps speed but wireless connection is the problem. I downloaded, thinkvintage toolkit,  a software to  find interference form cordless phone, etc, etc nothing worked.
Somehow my T43 got wireless connection. Not sure will it connect again if I switch it off.
I know little that the WPA encryption needs something diff the WEP encryption. Because my both T41 & T43 was able to wirelessly connect to my DSL router/modem.
If someone of you can throw some  light it would be a great help else I may have to buy  flash drive wireless card but I dunt want to occupy my flash drives as they are occupied by webcam & external speaker. Dunt  like to put a flash drive hub.
    Thanking you in advance.
    Jas

    Update on T43:
After formatting with Windows 2000 setup disk,  when I used the IBM sent R&R disk I did not get the previously got "kernel_data_error BLUE system error screen. All 6 R&R original CDC got loaded into RAM and I am in the process of getting my system back to Factory State ( Just XP and IBM tools).
I would like to know is it OK to keep IBM Access Connection or Not ? I am kinda scared to remove it ; Also Since bought this T43 , now and then the Microsoft Windows auto updates did make my system from XP-Service pack 2  --> and a year ago it automatically installed Service pack 3 automatically.  I just thought to mention this thinking can this be a problem in making my 2200Bg wireless  to fail with Uverse ISP modem? as with the same setup/configurations the my wireless was able to connect using WEP key encryption to my previous AT&T DSL router.  And Uverse Router requires WSP encryption per AT&T.
Other thing I worried was can my uninstalling Spybot and then going to McAfee Sw would have caused anyproblem to make my Wireless go wrong with UVerse, bcoz once i had problem and the McAfee tech support remotely connected to my T43 and said my registry is messed up and they have to fix it to make the McAfee work Properly.
Later when i got Uverse an AT&T friendly tech suggested that i better switch to AVG instead of McAfee; as McAfee uses too much of ram and it makes the computer to act slow and that may looks like the internet connection speed is slow.
..Anyway  I am sharing these info to give as much I know thinking it may help people with same problem or the T$# geeks to think of solutions.
George, Now that i think i have made my load back to factory state and wanna see will the 2000 bg wireless will work or not before Windows starts its auto upgrade to Sv.Pk 3 version ( thinking any interference or glitch or something of that nature).
Also i am thinking of installing the new ThinkVintage tool; IS it OK?
If u get a chance please throw some light, would greatly appreciate.  I will give an update if Intelpro wireless adaptor 2000bg works with AT& T uverse transition ( from DSL).
Mean while George where to you suggest me to buy parts/upgrades for this T43 (like better modem, more RAM etc. as i think like eBay or craiglist may give better pricing but i am not sure is it risky or not to buy )
If nothing works this time i am thinking of buying flash drive wireless card form best buy - please advise.
Thank you George, I am not a computer  geek but i am happy that this forum exposed me to many smart  thinkpad users and trouble shooters. Please give advise whenever u feel u got some solutions.
    Thanks, again,
    Jas
P.S. soory if my replies are long; but i thought to give more info so that u can get bettter idea of the real problem or needs of mine

  • How do I install Airport Time Capsule with ATT Uverse when two of my modems are wireless?

I recently purchased an Airport Time Capsule so that I can back up multiple Apple devices. I currently have ATT Uverse and my internet provider. Also, two of my modems are wireless. How can I set up the Time Capsule so the the two wireless modems will still work?

I think you are using wrong terminology so can I ask exactly what is the model number of the wireless modem??
The Uverse is already a router.. and I guess you have cable service.. so there is no need for more modems.. more likely you mean you have two wireless routers and these should be setup as Wireless Access Points.. (WAP or AP). If they are working as routers then you have far too many routers. If they are working as modems you have far too many modems.
It is impossible to tell you how to setup the TC until we know what the setup is.
But let me suggest the most straight forward approach is to plug the TC into the Uverse by ethernet (it cannot be used by wireless.. so this is necessary). Run the TC in bridge mode.. and create a wireless network. Test if you then can access it from your network client devices and do backups from Macs.. if so there is no need for the wireless modems.. leave them off.

  • Setting up network with ATT Uverse, Time Capsule, and Airport Extreme..HELP

    PLEASE HELP!
I have ATT U-Verse which provides their own router. My Time Capsule is connected to the router (in the living room) via an Ethernet cable and has been working fine, and is set up like this:
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network (I joined the ATT network 2wire)
    Network name: 2wirexyz
    Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Channel: 5
    Connect Using: Wireless Network
When I try to add my Airport Extreme (for wireless printing in the office) by adding it to the same network (I've also tried to extend the network option) the Airport Utility thinks forever then comes up with an error and the Airport continues to flash amber. I've tried resetting the Extreme multiple times and configuring different ways but same result.
What am I doing wrong?? Please help, my wife is giving me grief for not being able to print wirelessly from her MacBook!!
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me!

    Thank you Tessarax....
So does that mean I need to create a separate wireless network? I apologize, I'm not extremely familiar with how to complete what you've suggested. I know I've seen the bridge mentioned before in the Airport Utility when I've been trying different things. Would you mind giving me some more specific instructions please? Actually I just tried messing around with Airport Utility, let me know if I'm headed in the right direction:
For TC wireless mode I want to "Participate in a WDS network"?
Then where does my WDS remote come from? is that the Airport Extreme? I've plugged in the AEBS but it's not showing up in the Airport Utility...
I'll mess around with it some more tomorrow morning. Thanks I'll let you know how it goes.

  • At my wit's end with ATT UVerse and Time Capsule

I'm going to try this one last thread before I return all my UVerse stuff and go back to a simple Comcast modem.  I have a Time Capsule, model A1409, and just got ATT U-Verse, model 3801HGV.  I have searched the Apple community and any online website I can find that gives information about how to make the two work together and I have nothing but flashing amber.  Airport Utility keeps saying the ethernet is unplugged (which the cable is plugged in from the modem to the TC), no DNS servers, and no internet connection.  I have disabled the wireless function on the modem/router.  I have put the Time Capsule in Bridge mode.  I have rebooted everything.  I have reset the TC three times.  I have clicked on "DMZPlus mode".  I've even enabled detection of router-behind-router conditions.  I took the Time Capsule into Apple and it fired up right away, so no issues with the ethernet port.  I can connect my PC to the ATT router and get internet access.  No matter what I do, I still have flashing amber on my TC.  Any last words of advice before I return everything from ATT?

If you want to run a test.. and that is all it will be..
I think I said the best way is to get a cheap fast ethernet switch and put it in between the two devices.. not everything in the ethernet world works.. it seldom fails now but it does fail at time.
If you are not interested in buying or borrowing a switch.. then you can do something to help in the TC interface.
This might only be available if you use 5.6 utility.. at least I have never done it via v6.
You will need to put the TC back into router mode. So start with another factory reset.
step 1 (only required if both units use same IP range).
And if the uverse modem is running 10.x.x.x IP then to give this the best shot, change the TC over to 192.168.1.x ip range. You do this by changing the DHCP Beginning Address from 10.0 to 192.168 in the picture below. If your uverse uses 192.168.x.x already ignore this step.
    Step 2.
Check now that ethernet is still not working. If not go to the setup page for wan connection and change the WAN speed. Remember the TC must be plugged wan to uverse LAN port.
The only control offered is for WAN port to fix the speed. Change it down to 100Mbps/Full duplex.
    Update the TC.
No luck, swap down to 10Mbps/Half-duplex ie the slowest possible. update the TC and see if it connects.
If it fails then there is something seriously wrong. And I doubt it will ever work.
If it happens to work at 100mbps/full duplex.. that is fast enough to cause no problems.. 10mbps is not.
I would either give up using the one item or the other.. but you do not want to keep this mode.. this is double NAT and we did it to test only.. success means the ethernet is failing to communicate correctly and go back and buy the switch I suggested.. fast ethernet.. small 5 port and it should fix it.
