IMac Disk Utility Prob/Reinstalling OSX?

Hi guys,
I would have been most grateful to you if you could give me some tips on the following situation.
I have got some sort of a bug in my iMac G5 Ambient Light Sensor: it turned off 2 times, and the Disk Utility said I had to repair the volume, well, the usual stuff, you know: 'The underlying task reported failure...' and blablabla... I have tried to startup from the OSX DVD from my MacBook, since it was the closest version to what I have on the iMac [10.4.8], but it gave me the Kernel Panic and asked to restart. Now I am thinking of reinstalling the whole system, since what I've got on my iMac isn't that vitally important and I can backup some files on my Book, but I would like to know what you could advise me. Maybe there's some way round? Is it normal to reinstall the OSX from my MacBook DVD? Will it be fine? The problem is that I don't have an original CD that came with the iMac. :-/
I can also try to startup from another person's MacBookPro and try to fix the problem with the Disk Utility, but perhaps it won't work? Can it be that I'll have more bugs in the future? Probably it's better to reinstall and all the bugs will be erased? Anyone had anything of a kind?
Oh, yes, and I would like to know if the Archieve option in the OSX Install does actually save the programs the way they are, and if they'd need any kind of installation afterwards, after the OSX installation.
Thanx for any possible assistance!
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Welcome to Discussions - no, you cannot start up from your MacBook install disc, it has a totally different structure. You need an install disc for the G5 ambient light, Apple will sell you one, or perhaps you can find it on eBay, but it must be for the ambient light, and no other model.
You can start in target disk mode using your MacBook.
If you do an archive and install, and check "preserve user settings and preferences, all your apps and settings (well, most of them) will be saved, here are the instructions.
Pplease let us know how you make out,
Miriam

  • Can't locate disk (using Disk Utility) when reinstalling OSX v10.2

Having problems after wiping drive and reinstalling - Disk Utility & Installation do not show a drive for the machine. Viewing other posts suggest clicking on Erase tab and selecting MAC OS Extended - but the drop-down box is greyed out with MAC OS Standard displayed. Tried to use Disk Warrior but nothing displayed when I booted up from the CD. Is this an indicator that my drive needs replacing? Machine is old - G4 /450, and can't remember if I used the old software or Tiger with the previous installation.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

do you have your original mac install disks? try to use the apple hardware test program...it will check the main hardware and if there are hardware failures with your HD, or other components it'll give you heads up.
also post this question in the powermac G4 forum, might get more bites since this is the G4 MDD forum.

i just restarted my mac then suddenly when it boots, disk utility came and says different option like repair disk, get help, reinstall OSX and I tried to click disk repair but it says that I am um able to repair the disk

It sounds like your hard drive either has a software problem that Disk Utility cannot fix or that the HD has failed (mechanically).
Your Mac may have booted either to your recovery partition or to internet recovery in an attempt to repair the drive- I can't tell from your post.
I'll assume that it was the recovery partition.
Try to boot into internet recovery (hold down option command R at restart), and see if you can repair your HD with Disk Utility. You should also repair permissions while you're there.
If that doesn't work, try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
If that doesn't work you have a few options:
If your mac originally came with installation disks, you can try to boot from the installation disk and then see if you can repair the HD.
There is a small chance that Techtool Pro 7  will be able to repair your HD if Disk Utility can't.
If none of that works then your HD has probably failed and will need to be replaced, which is not too difficult to do yourself if you can use a screwdriver.

hi, i have tryed to install os x leopard, (its a old imac) , disk utility is greyed out , my install dvd cant find any hdd to install on , my only way to format and configure is through terminal but dont know what commands to execute...
i tryed diffrent commands such as diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ Disk1

when i click the apple in the top left corner the whole menu is greyed out... what to do ?  help me please
    Sincerly AppleNoob92
p.s i have no experience in apple imac's at all never used before, but im kinda windows nerd so computers i understand but this imac make my insane, cant seem to find any solutions anywhere on the WWW....

Your HD may be crashed, so you probably should use the oringinal install discs to run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode. If error codes appear this confirms a hardware failure. In addition you cannnot repair the HD using Disk Utility from the startup disk, you have to use the origninal Install discs that shipped with the computer or the most up-to-date version of OS X on a disc that you have.

  • IMac Disk utility volume doesn't go away?

Hello! Could anyone please help me with this? (Please bear with me since this is my first post)
So a couple of days ago I tried to bootcamp my mac to install windows 7 while half way through the power went out...
It came back on to horror as when I booted up the Mac I had over 300GB of hard drive space eaten up and gone.
I spent the next few days fooling around with help related topics Ive found on the forum to try and get that space back.
But eventually I decided to just reinstall the OS since i messed up so badly, wasnt a problem for me since I back up everything.
Eventually I was able to clear a space for "internet recovery" mode to re-dowload mountain lion and install it.
But when I logged in and set everything up I was greeted with 2 Macintosh HD's
In disk utility it looks like this, which greatly confuses me:
How could I get this to be all one partiton again? To be able to install windows 7 on boot camp it says it needs to have the whole hard drive as one partition.
So Ive been stumped all day as to how to get it back together, Ive tried third party software, booting from a live USB and editing it, and still nothing has been able to change it.
The first Macintosh HD is around 700GB and the 2nd one is around 300GB but its a fusion drive  (I think the SSD is 128GB hooked up to a 1TB HDD because it shows up as a 1.12TB drive)
I can read and write to both areas as they show up in finder as if they were hard drives.
But I get no option to shrink or expand them or combine them back together...
    Technical Information:
    iMac 27-inch late 2012
    1TB Fusion Drive
OS X 10.8.4, Everything up to date
Thank you very much for your time in reading this and I hope you can help me, or well I hope someone knows how to fix this!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It looks like Fusion Drive messed up everything. In this case, I recommend you to make a backup of your data and format the whole Fusion Drive.
First, get an external drive and make a backup of your files with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
When you have done that, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start up in Internet Recovery (not Recovery HD), so you can format the whole Fusion Drive. Open Disk Utility and follow these steps to format it > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
Finally, check that everything is OK in Disk Utility, close it, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow the steps. Another thing you can try is to reinstall OS X as usual and restore the backup during the setup, which is safer

  • IMac disk utility not reading any FAT32/NTFS related partitions/CD/flash drives

    Hi everyone!
I'm trying to access my drives and later on install bootcamp and windows on my iMac. At moment I can only start the iMac in safe mode (long story, if interested check out iMac 27" (late 2009), freezing - List of solutions tried). Any steps taken so far to read and format other drives has been in Safe Mode.
    Problems:
    - any formats except Mac OS X extended gets greyed out in Disk Utility.
    - Not able to read/mount flash drives, external drives or CD's with any other formats.
    Solutions tried:
    - Tried to format using OSX on current iMac, MBP and PC and no change or luck.
    - Tried on other machines and it works great. So it's related to my iMac.
    - Disk Utility try to Mount drive/partition - getting error "The disk "BOOTCAMP" could not be mounted"
    - Installed Paragon NTFS but no difference.
    - Disk Utility no disk error reported
Searched on internet and forums for a solution w/o any luck. Haven't found anyone with similar problems or I'm using wrong keywords. Haven't found any Knowledge Base about other formats is disabled in Safe Mode state so it can't be that either. Below is a picture that shows any other partitions than mac is greyed out.
Any suggestions or anyone encounter with this wierd behavior?

  • Repairing HD using Disk Utility without an OSX system CD

I purchased a used iMac G4 700 Mhz pre-loaded with OSX 10.4.11 but without any install and restore disks. The system was working OK but froze when I was copying files from an external HD (music files from a Windows iTunes library) and I had to switch it off via the power button.
It restarted OK but I ran Disk Utility on the Macintosh HD and got the message that it needs to be repaired. This, of course, means I need to load the system from another disk!
The only start-up disks I have are Mac OS9 from a previous computer. Would I be able to use one of these to run Disk Utility on the Mac HD?
Another possibility would be to copy the OSX system folder to the external HD and use that as the start-up disk. Is this possible?
The machine is still working (I am using it to post this message) so I don't want to use trial and error methods myself and crash it completely.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome!
My concern with your copying your system (actually, "clone" is the operative task) to another drive is that damaged files could go with the clone and you'd have problems in two places instead of one.
Assuming you do the clone, it will have to be a 'bootable clone" created with utilities like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. The external drive must be bootable--for a G4 iMac that means the drive must be connected via FireWire (IEEE 1394). A USB external drive will not boot a Mac with a PowerPC processor.
The best action on your part could be to make contact with a Mac User group in your area. Maybe someone has system disks they could let you use long enough to repair the internal drive.
    This Apple web page:
    http://appleusergroups.com/locator/find/locate.cgi?country=17
shows a list of Mac user groups in the UK.

  • Transferred hard drive from Macbook to Mac mini and now have Disk Util prob

The problem is with Disk Utility. Basically, the DU window is just blank, that is, no hard drives show up in the left hand column. Also, none of the buttons at the top are clickable, though the menu bar drop down menus work. If I use Expose to push the window off the screen and then bring it back, then sometimes it shows the hard drive, but part of it's name will be cut off. Also, if the left hand side of the window is blank, but I right click somewhere there, it will behave as if I'm right clicking on the drive's name.
I also ran Disk Utility off the Leopard install disc and that's running fine. All the drives showed up fine and I repaired permissions and repaired the disks wherever possible. I also tried trashing the DU preference (plist) file, but that didn't help. I've restarted the computer multiple times and also tried from another account and still the same problems.
Like I mentioned, I'm not sure if this problem has anything to do with the mini or switching out the drive or if it was just coincidental with the drive exchange today. I can't remember the last time I tried using Disk Utility, but I'm sure it was some time ago.
The reason I was trying to open up DU was b/c my Time Machine backup drive is not being recognized by the mini as the backup (probably somehow it was tied to the Macbook), so I wanted to reformat it and start the Time Machine back ups all over again.
Anyway, I was wondering if you anybody had any suggestions. Maybe my Disk Utility program is somehow corrupted and I could reinstall just that program somehow? It almost seems kinda like a graphics issue since the window for DU kind of looks funny (things cut off, buttons disappear, etc.).
Update: I used Pacifist to extract the Disk Utility program from the Leopard Installer and it still has the same problem.

I see. Thanks for the info. Sounds like I may have already tried what you suggested, as I mentioned in my original post that, "I've restarted the computer multiple times and also tried from another account and still the same problems."
However, I haven't created a new account and tried opening DU when logged into that account. Do you think that may make a difference?
    Thanks.

  • Can neither use disk utility nor reinstall from original  install disc

I cannot use the disk utility (pressing D / install disk) - it says that "the machine does not support it"
And I cannot delete and reinstall mac os x - if I boot from the install disk the screen stays light blue

  • Unresponsive iMac - disk utility repair unsuccessful

My iMac has been running slow for several months, but it got ridiculously slow recently, and now it will not start up - stuck on the screen with the spinning clock. So I stuck in the INstall Disk and did a 'hardware check' - it said all was ok. I tried the First Aid disk utility to repair it, and it said "Error: THe underlying task reported failure on exit". Before that, it said "Incorrect number of thread records", "invalid node structure" and "volume check failed".
Do I need to re-install the OS? I have a backup of the hard disk, but I haven't backed it up in about 2 months, so I would hate to lose 2 months worth of files.
    Any ideas?

    Hello es:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
If Apple's disk utility fails to fix problems you have two choices:
    1. Use a robust third party utility. I have DiskWarrior (pricey at about $90 from Alsoft). DW is the +"gold standard"+ of directory repair.
    2. Do an archive and install. Erase and install should be reserved for disasters. An archive and install will preserve your files, programs, and settings while installing a fresh OS X (you would, of course, need to run software update to bring everything to current levels).

  • Wipe laptop and reinstall OSX from app store??

I bought OSX Mountain Lion from the app store and now want to wipe my laptop and install the OS clean.
I have alot of random stuff on my computer that i do not want anymore. Is there some way to do this? or do i have to have a physical DVD?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Lion and Mountain Lion have got OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 This allows you to reinstall OS X without a disc.
To start from OS X Recovery, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting. After doing it, follow these steps:
    1. Open Disk Utility, select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    2. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
OS X Recovery will download OS X from Apple. As you purchased Mountain Lion before, you can download it as many times as you want free of charge

  • Is my HD Dead? Reformat Disk Utility Error: secure disk erase failed with the error could not open disk.

    Hi,
Fed up with seeing the spinning beach ball I decided to reformat my MacBook Pro...
After backing up everything on an external hard drive I put in the OSX install DVD, restarted the machine and held down 'C'.
I followed the install prcedure, clicking next a few times etc...
I then went into Utilities > Disk Utility. I chose 7-Pass to erase the Macintosh HD and set it off erasing.
I checked the process an hour in and message on screen read:
Secure disk erase failed with the error:
    could not open disk
The internal hard drive no longer exists in the disk utility so I cant retry erasing it.
The only thing that appears in disk utility is the OSX install DVD.
I can't even shut down the mac as everything under the apple tab is greyed out!
I'm guessing this means my hard drive is broken right?
If anyone has any other ideas of what to try I'd really appreciate that.
How do I turn the machine off?
If my hard drive is gone then should I consider getting an SSD drive?
Any recommendations for such a drive would be great.
    Hope you can help!

    Did you partition the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Disk Utility not working from Recovery HD.

I've got a brand new top of the line Late 2013 MacBook Pro (2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, 1TB HD).  This is my first Mac and I need to run Windows as well so I have done a lot of playing with Boot Camp, Parallels, and VMWare fusion.  Including the use of CampTune for resizing the boot camp partition.  Somehow I got it into a state where CampTune wouldn't run because it says the partitions need to be repaired.  When I ran Disk Utility from within OS X, it said I needed to boot into Recovery and use Disk Utility there.  However, in Recovery, Disk Utility won't launch.  When I choose it, it starts to start up and shows "Gathering Disk Information", then returns to the Recovery Menu.  The next thing I tried was restoring a Time Machine backup.  That ended up saying it was going to take 48 hours so I killed it.  At this point the Mac partition doesn't show up in the recovery boot menu but it does show up in Windows running from the Boot Camp partition.
    What I'd like to do.
    1. Recreate the Mac partition / reinstall OS X, preserving the existing boot camp partition.
    2. Install Parallels and convert the boot camp partition to a VM.
    3. Blow away the Boot Camp Partition and extend the mac partition to the full hard drive (1TB).
    4. Use Windows via Parallels.
But I can't even get it to run Disk Utility or Reinstall OS X from the Recovery Menu at this point.  Can this be done from the command line?  I see you can use terminal from the Recovery partition.
Alternativey I can resotre the boot camp partition from a backup so if there is a way to just level set the thing to stock that would work too.

    Ouch! What a mess!
By the sound of things you will need to be in a fast wi-fi area and reinstall via Internet recovery.
Restart your Mac whilst pressing and holding Commmnad+Option+R keys - enter your wi-fi password and then enable the Internet Recovery mode.
It will delete your current bootcamp if you erase your disk and reinstall but at least you can recreate that later.

  • Disk Utility Freezes & MS Word & Excel Won't Launch

Yesterday, my Disk Utility froze when it started performing a Verify Disk and I had to force quit. This morning I was using both MS Excel and MS Word, closed them and when I tried to open them 30 minutes later, neither will launch and I get an error message saying that they "closed unexpectedly during launch." I tried to Verify Disk & Disk Utility froze again. Then I repaired permissions using Disk Utility but it didn't help with the Excel and Word issues. I have never had a problem with any of these before. I just used Disk Warrior to "Check All Files and Folders" and "Repair Disk Permissions" and Test the Hardware. I am still not able to open Word or Excel. Any thoughts??

Hard drive has 30.58 GB available. I didn't run disk utility from the OSX install disk -- am in the process of moving and not sure where it is. Might actually be in my home in another country!!!
