Imac display brightness has dropped

For the last few weeks, my 27" imac (2011) has been experiencing random flickering where the display would flicker between it's set brightness and medium brightness, but it was never something that I would be able to predict or trigger.  Then last night my display flickered and and stayed dimmer.
The display is still visibile and backlight still works, but at full brightness in a fairly dark room, the display is now noticably dimmer than it was before, where before hand in a dark room it was necessary to drop the brightness to below half to where now it is just right in a dark room, but in a lit room the display isn't quite bright enough.  Basically the display is not as bright as it used to be, any idea what it could be?

  • IMacs Display Brightness Resets Overnight

    I have 2 iMacs, one G5 and one Intel, They have both developed a problem where the display brighness resets to the lowest setting after it has been turned off and left overnight. Otherwise the brightness stays the same all day. One is running 10.3 and the other 10.4. PRam reset, permissions and adjustments to the power saver settings did nothing.
    Any Ideas

    My brand new iMac G5 is now doing this, exactly as you describe. I used to have an iMac G4 800mhz that did this also. Never could find a solution.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is display brightness reduced in Leopard?

    Hi everyone, I have a question about the display brightness in Leopard. I just upgraded my SR MBP from Tiger to Leopard, and I noticed that the display brightness has been reduced. I used to work with half maximum brightness in Tiger, but now I have to set my display brightness to almost maximum value. Has anyone met this, or I need to do some extra setting up for the display?

    Hi, I have also noticed a significant reduction in brightness on my MacBook Pro. I have recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard and I am very disappointed! I use my Mac for design purposes and this reduction does have quite an effect of the true display of colours, etc. Has anyone found a way to correct the brightness of the screen?

  • Brightness control drops to minimum whenever my Imac is shut down

    I recently upgraded to Leopard. Since then every time my IMac powers down, but not in sleep mode, the screen brightness drops to the minimum level. Why does the IMac doe this and how can I maintain the screen brightness that I set through system preferences, displays whenever I have to do a shutdown? Any suggestions out there?

    Me too! I recently switched from keeping my iMac on all day but in the sleep mode to automatically shutting down every evening and waking up every morning. After making these changes in the energy saver control panel my screen brightness also drops to the minimum every morning.

  • Tip:  Display brightness affects iMac temperature

    Not a question, just a useful tip for anyone concerned about the temperature of their iMac G5. The brightness of the LCD display can signnificantly affect temperatures inside the machine. So if you are reading high temperatures in your iMac, or the fans are running at higher speeds than you'd like, try going into System Preferences/Displays and adjusting the screen brightness down to the dimmest you can handle. It will take a while to take effect (as the machine needs to cool) but there will be a noticable difference over time.
    This may also reduce eye-fatigue (provided you don't set it too low.
    I was told by an Apple Tech that the reason for this is that the LCD is lit by powerful neon bulbs that output a lot of heat directly next to all of the other components in the machine, so dimming the brightness reduces this heat-output somewhat.

    I have to say, nice tip! I dimmed my iMac's brightness down to the lowest it would go. In about a minute the CPU temp dropped a good seven degrees Celsius.
    Now I'll test it at 50% brightness.

  • The display brightness can't be adjusted in Windows 7 under Bootcamp 4, iMac 21.5 (mid 2011) with ATI Radion 6770M..

    The display brightness of my iMac 21.5 (mid 2011, with ATI Radeon 6770M) can't be adjusted in Windows 7 installed under Bootcamp 4. I tried moving the brightness glider either with apple keyboard hotkeys (on-screen glider), or within Windows control panel brightness control (within the power option), but the brightness remains the same. I've had all software (Lion, bootcamp, windows 7) up to date. Please help. Thanks.

    I posted a similar case to yours a month ago and it seems we're in a minority on the problem.  What I have learned over this month was that Bootcamp drivers version 4 (Designed around OS Lion) was a BIG part of my issue with the ATI video.  The new IMacs seems to require a customized by Apple Verion 3.2 or 3.3 to operate normally.   Sadly, it's not as easy as just backing off version 4 and going onto 3.2 and getting the video slider back.   You need to reload Windows and avoid Bootcamp 4.0 as it seems a piece of V4 gets stuck in Windows.  I'm putting this suggestion to practise this week, guess I'll have more to say later.

  • Has anyone calibrated an iMac display?

    I just purchased my first iMac. My previous displays were CRT monitors and I was able to calibrate them with the Eye One Display 2 from Mamiya/Gretag Macbeth. There are no adjustment buttons to fine tune the color temperature on the iMac. Has anyone had any success running calibration software of their iMac display? As a photographer, I need to know that what I see on my monitor is accurate color so my prints will match what I see when they come back from my photo lab

    Hi,
    the new iMac has a glass surface which makes it hard to calibrate with mostly every older calibration tools.
    I now use the new Datacolor Spyder3Pro which works perfectly on my iMac. It has been specially designed for glossy display, LED backlight and wide gamut screens...
    It's also doing a fine job on my MacBook Pro with LED backlight, where my Eye1 failed before.
    Just my 2 cents...

  • Automatically adjust display brightness via Terminal / Pretty good solution

    This hint is for all of you who experience any problem with the adjustment of the display brightness.
    *Short version*
    After a cold and/or warm start, it sometimes happens that the brightness was changed by the system itself to its dim power saver setting or maximum value and sometimes - what a big surprise - remains as it has been configured.
    I had spotted plenty of articles about this phenomenon, but none of them yielded a solution. I then decided to solve this problem by going the pragmatically way and use some kind of software which dims the display to my preferred setting. And the winner is: brightness.
    This tiny program works perfect and you will love its benefit by using it in terminal - yes, brightness is a command line utility. On top of this, brightness is able to control different displays, internal and external. The clou: beside using the precompiled binary you can also download the source code here, modify it to make the program fit your needs and then compile it using Xcode.
    1. Installation
    Download a precompiled version of the command line utility brightness here and extract the binary to your desired path (e.g. /usr/bin).
    2. Usage
    "brightness -l -v" dumps the current display attributes (-v for verbose mode) while "brightness 0.5" modifies the brightness of the main display to half of its max value and "brightness -m 1 1" let a second display become shiny. Just play little bit around.
    3. Automatically launch
    Simply create a .plist file and drop it, for example, in ~/Library/LaunchAgents. Or make use of an AppleScript or a Terminal Script to let it launch.
    That's it. Comments are welcome.
    *Long version*
    It seems to be, that the adjustment of the display brightness of an iMac and MacBook/Pro (maybe also other models are affected) drives a life of its own. After a cold and/or warm start, it sometimes happens that the brightness was changed by the system itself to its dim power saver setting or maximum value and sometimes - what a big surprise - remains as it has been configured.
    I had spotted plenty of articles about this phenomenon, but only found terms like "Did you already disabled the ambient light sensor", "Did you already reset the PRAM?", "Did you already reset the NVRAM?", "Did you already…BLAH". Far from it, all of these tips have one thing in common: none of them yielded a solution. As a last resort, I thought, it was a good idea to install 10.6 from the scratch just to find out that the above mentioned phenomenon occurs right after a few days of using OS X.
    I then decided to solve this problem by going the pragmatically way and use some kind of software which dims the display to my preferred setting. There are a few applications to do this, but always it was necessary to drag a slider or type in a value to dim the display, so none of them allowed an automatic configuration. No, I am not a very sophisticated person, I only prefer to use software which is simply well-thought-out.

    2. Usage
    "brightness -l -v" dumps the current display attributes (-v for verbose mode) while "brightness 0.5" modifies the brightness of the main display to half of its max value and "brightness -m 1 1" let a second display become shiny. Just play little bit around.
    3. Automatically launch
    Sure, OS X provides different ways to launch a program automatically. If you are an enthusiast, feel free to use the one you prefer and stop reading, because you are already finished. If you are not that familiar to OS X take the next step as an advice.
    An easy way to trigger OS X launching a program automatically is to add the desired program to your Login Items. But, in this case, it will not work the easy way, because we have to launch a so called classic command line utility with a given option. It is not like starting Mail or iCal, which appears as typical applications to OS X. You must start brightness via Terminal by typing "brightness 0.5" (without quotes) to modify the main display brightness to half of its max.
    We now use a Launch Agent. Just create a .plist file, e.g. com.brightness.plist, with your favorite text editor. For the lazy ones here comes the template (simply copy and paste):
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Disabled</key>
    <false/>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>com.brightness</string>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/usr/bin/brightness</string>
    <string>.5</string>
    </array>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <true/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Save the file in ~/Library/LaunchAgents, if you want brightness to be executed everytime you log in.
    You could also use an AppleScript. Copy and paste this code "do shell script "brightness 0.5"" (without the leading and closing quotes) to a new Script. Then choose Save As and enable the Option to make it Execute only. Now add the Script to your Login Items.
    Another option is to use a Terminal Script. Copy and paste this code
    #!/bin/bash
    /usr/bin/brightness 0.5
    exit 0
    and save it as, for example, brightness.sh. Make the Script executeable and add it to your Login Items.
    That's it. Comments are welcome.

    Thanks. Works great. I made a ScriptBundle and a User Agent (launchd) . So if someone sets the display brightness to maximum, it automaticaly corrects it at next login.
    The ScriptBundle contains your mentoined command line utility and the following applescript:
    do shell script quoted form of (POSIX path of (path to resource "brightness")) & " 0.7"
    Be aware of the space in " 0.7" or whatever value you have set.

  • IMac display getting yellow when external display is attached?

    Hi,
    I have a problem with my IMac (27'' Mid 2010):
    I have an external TV attached via MDP->DVI->HDMI cable. When I turn on the TV, the iMac recognizes it and the iMac display turns blue shortly, then the desktop returns and my TV is ready.
    What I noticed: After the desktop returns, the iMac sometimes suddenly becomes "more yellow". Don't know exactly how to describe it, but I can clearly see how the desktop returns and then suddenly the imac display turns a little yellow, could also be that the display just gets a little darker (although the display brightness is the same as before). it's nothing that really disturbs me, and although I never saw the color return to normal it does (but I think only after rebooting the iMac)
    anything on this? anyone else noticed that?

    Hi nachdenki
    I've used both TV's and Monitors with my iMac over the years and that default iMac Profile has always looked yellow in comparison. Try one of those other sRGB, RGB Profiles or create a new Color Profile for the iMac's display.

  • 24" iMac display woes on startup

    About a month and a half ago I began to notice my display would not come up when I powered up my iMac. The power light would come on but no display would show. I obviously tried everything suggested in the Support pages and then called Apple Support and they had me do everything a 2nd time. After talking with support they shipped out parts and had a tech come work on my iMac.
    My computer was worked on about two weeks ago and the problem was at first solved, but now it is back again. I can occasionally get the display to come on if I cross my fingers just right. I am really sick of this problem, has anyone had similar problems? When the guy came out and "repaired" my iMac he put a new graphics card in and that was to supposedly fix the problem. Sometimes the display will work perfectly when I start the iMac but rarely. Sometimes the display will come on but it is dimmer than full brightness and when I go to turn up the display brightness with F15 it shows as at max, so I try F14 to turn it down but it will go down a notch from full brightness then automatically check back up to full.
    I'm really looking for any help possible even if somebody just tells me to call Apple again. I'm at wits end because I've had this machine worked on twice now and the problems never seem to stop. Have I just gotten a lemon? I had a Powerbook G4 for three years and never had any issues with it.
    I am almost certain this is not a software issue so I haven't bothered formatting and reinstalling everything, could that help for any reason?

    Welcome to Discussions, jfff!
    It didn't cost you cash out to get it fixed - certainly better not have, so let Apple keep fixing it until they get it right.
    Apple REALLY does not want you to have this problem, they want you happy and using it so that you'll want more Macs. The quicker you can let them know it still isn't right, the quicker they can send someone out again to try something else.
    Although it's not always evident ahead of time what needs to be done, they can fix it, and they will, regardless how much effort, or how many parts it takes them, without quibbling, so don't hesitate to keep them informed. At some point, if they put too much effort into it, they'll decide to just replace it.
    That's all it should take - inform them, no need to complain or anything dramatic, as they get plenty of those calls from others who haven't even bought a Mac yet. You know the kind of calls - "why can't I get a black one, I'll pay extra for it?"

  • Unexplained display brightness changes

    After a search of the forums, I understand that this issue has been floating around for a couple of years. I haven't found any explanations or resolution.
    I have an iMac G5, 1.6GHz. The computer seems fine in most respects except for one annoying "feature". Whenever I wake it from sleep or start up in the morning, the brightness has reverted to the lowest setting. I think I've tried everything from zapping the PRAM to tossing the display preferences. It's annoying because I constant have to use the F15 key to bring it back up. Has anyone ever solved this problem? It doesn't appear to be a video card issue because I don't need to crank the brightness for it to look correct.
    TIA

    Have you tried resetting the SMU?

  • New iMac display on/off

    Does the new iMac have an on/off button for the display that is separate from the on/off power button for the iMac itself?
    It would be nice to have the ability to turn off the display, when not in use, without having to powering down the iMac.

    Sleeping the entire machine is one thing. Sleeping the display is a separate issue.
    It seems there's currently no way to PERMANENTLY turn off the display backlight on an iMac. Setting a display time-out in the energy-saver settings or Ctrl-Shift-eject is supposed turn off the backlight, but if you have applications running on the machine, the display will turn itself back on again after a few seconds. (Try sleeping in a room with an iMac display on. Even displaying a black jpeg with the brightness turned down, you'll need to physically cover the screen!) The backlight will normally power down properly when there's nothing running on the machine, but if the machine weren't doing anything, I'd just sleep the whole machine, not just the display!! I want to sleep just the display/backlight when there are time-consuming applications running in the background, i.e., if the machine is encoding, running backups, syncing with cloud/server drives, etc.
    This thread shows many other people having the same problem:
    http://mac.elated.com/2007/02/02/why-cant-you-turn-off-the-screen/
    It seems this has been a problem for well over a year and I've not even seen Apple acknowledge the issue. IMHO, not being able to leave applications running with the backlight turned off is a critical design flaw. If I'd known this in advance, I'd have bought a Windows PC Now regretting my iMac purchase...

  • 2.16 iMac display making popping noise

    Hey guys,
    My imac display has been making these "popping" noises that are very faint when the screen dims and when the screen goes to a screen saver (it does it for all different screen savers).
    Its like a ticking sound and theres about 3 ticks per second.
    The screen is as bright as ever so I'm not sure whats up. I'll leave the screen idle for a few mins, then it auto-dims and the ticking starts.
    Anyone ever hearad of this?

    use ASP and check the ST hard drive ie Seagate. If assembled in china and firmware version 7.01 ; then you best save your data asap because the hard drive is going to crash with no possibility of data recovery.
