IMac display doesn't stay asleep when hot corner activated

Hi,
I'm having the same problem mentioned in this archived thread from three years ago:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1323073?start=0&tstart=0
I have an Intel 27" iMac that I bought brand new last year. I have a hot corner set to sleep the display, but after it's activated it usually comes back on after a few seconds. It's really frustrating.
If it's just mouse jitters (I have the wireless Magic Mouse that came with the iMac), I don't understand why the hot corner area is so small. It seems like it's just a pixel large. Is there any way to make the hot corner area bigger so the mouse has to be moved a wider distance to come out of the hot corner?
Or if it's certain programs activating the display, how do I figure out which programs are doing it and is there any way to prevent all programs from doing that? If I'm choosing to sleep my display, I want it to stay that way and I don't want it to come on even if I have an iCal reminder.

How can you be sure? It may be some system operation that's doing it.
This may also prevent the display from sleeping, but the next time you're doing this you might launch Activity Monitor and order the process list by CPU. Then when the display wakes up, note what processes (besides the DVD encoding software) are using non-trivial amounts of CPU time.

  • IMac display won't stay asleep while encoding with iDVD

My iMac's display refuses to stay in sleep mode while I am encoding a project in iDVD. (Note that I'm referring to sleeping the display, not the entire computer.) I encode large projects overnight, and I am concerned about possible burn-in, the annoyance of the unwanted light when I'm trying to sleep, and the waste of energy. A search of the archives reveals a long history of the same problem which unfortunately has remained unsolved.
I have tried the following with no success:
    1. Ruled out accidental mouse/keyboard strokes as the problem
    2. Used Hot Corners to initiate sleep (wakes back up after 5 seconds)
    3. Setting the sleep display timer to 1 minute in the Energy Saving settings
    4. 3rd party app and widget "Sleep Display" (only works for 10.4 Tiger apparently)
Does anyone have any new ideas about this bug/problem? Does it only affect iMacs?
    Thanks

  • IMac - Display doesn´t work after restart

My iMac 21 Display doesn´t work after restart. If I turn it off and 1 hour later I want use it again the iMac shows the white screen with the mac logo and then the display goes off. I connected an external display to check if the iMac was ON and with the external display I can login and do everything but the iMac Display doesn´t work .
If I turn it off and wait 3 or 4 hours  and then turn it back on the display works OK.
This is very strange behavior I have spent hours and hours trying to fine the solution or a similar issue but nothing so I am looking help here at apple.com
BTW When I bougth the iMac 21 there were some spots over the display so the display was replaced by the provider. The warranty has expired by now.

To tell you the truth, I don't know if they have to repalce the LCD panel or what they do for a bad backlight. In this reality of block or assembly replacement it probably involves repalcing the panel and not the backlight component. Don't know what it would cost. You'd have to ask that of a service center.

  • Sleep Display not staying asleep when encoding video

    Hello,
I am looking for a way to turn the display off and KEEP it off with applications running as normal, until I want to wake it up. It is not always staying asleep.
I have a hot corner set up so that I can instantly turn my iMac display off (including the backlight). This works fine most of the time, but when running certain applications, activating sleep display works for a few seconds then stops working and the screen comes back to life.
Example applications which cause this are iTunes when encoding a video (e.g. converting a movie to iPod format), iSquint when encoding video, iDVD when encoding and burning a DVD - seems to be anything that makes heavy use of the processor.
I have tried all sorts of things to get around this:
    1. setting the sleep display timer to 1 minute in the Energy Saving settings
    2. 3rd party application and widget "Sleep Display" (http://linestreet.googlepages.com/home) which claims to make the display go to sleep and STAY asleep, suggesting "This version may work for people who experienced the monitor going off then coming right back on" - which indicates that it's not just me having the problem. This "Sleep Display" application doesn't work with Leopard though; the author acknowledges this and suggests he will update it if he upgrades to 10.5
    3. different application - http://www.imalc.com/Site/SleepDisplay.html - this does the same as the hot corner and wakes up within a few seconds
    4. sleep display tool in Dockables - same problem
    5. "shades" system preference add-on, this makes the screen black and keeps it black but doesn't turn the backlight off
    6. tried hiding the offending application, moving it to another space - nothing seems to work!
    7. covering the imac with clothes - not ideal!
    Thanks for your help!
    Jim
P.S. the screensaver does stay on - so whatever is waking the sleep display isn't disturbing the screen saver - this suggests to me it's a bug. Obviously a black screensaver isn't the solution though - the backlight is still on.

I've got a very the similar problem. Brand new iMac 24" that shipped with Leopard -- my first Mac after jumping ship fom the Windoze side.
I had iTunes updating it's album artwork and since it was taking a while, I went to bed. When I turned out my light, I realized the screen had not yet gone to sleep (a good 15 minutes after it should have). So I set up a Hot Corner to put the display to sleep. When I put the mouse there, the monitor would go to sleep, but wake up within 10 seconds. At first I thought it was just the mouse moving as I walked away, but it wasn't.
I ended up turning the computer off because the big beautiful screen was throwing too much light. Since, I rarely turn my computers off and they're usually doing SOMETHING, this is really annoying.
Admittedly, I haven't tried some othe the potential solutions above, but this has to be the same bug. Screen saver stays on, monitor comes out of sleep.
    Any help would be.....well.....helpful.

  • I5 27" imac display doesn't turn on

    Hi,
This issue just cropped up for me this morning. When I go to turn on my recently purchased (Feb 2011) core i5 27" iMac, the screen doesn't turn on. Instead, it remains black until I hit the power button again, after which it will usually come to life. It sometimes goes black again without any warning. I can usually get the screen to come back to life if I hit the power button. However, I have an older 24" cinema display hooked up as a second monitor, and it always comes to life when I start up, and never goes black like the iMac display. Anyone else having this problem? Are there any known/recommended solutions?
    Thanks!

  • IMac display doesn't turn back on after sleep

This is a new problem on my two-year old iMac, and didn't happen before. What is happening with my iMac is that when it goes to sleep and the display turns off, the display doesn't turn back on when I move the mouse, press the keys or the power button.
It happens only after around 12 hours or so of inactivity, it seems. I have to reboot the iMac to force the display to turn back on. I think it is display issue, not the computer lockup because I checked which logs were written in /var/log - system.log was being written until I rebooted the iMac. However, I didn't see any information in there around the same time that I tried to turn the iMac back on.
Any ideas on how to debug the issue.

    Hi dailyjoe
    1. Reset your SMC exactly as instructed in the following article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
    2. It would be normal for you to have to startup your iMac if it lost power while in sleep mode, look at the box "Start up automatically after a power failure" in the Energy Saver preference.
I have always left the box for "Start up automatically after a power failure" unchecked and do occasionally find the iMac is shutdown because the power has gone off. I would suggest leaving the box unchecked, it's better than having the iMac going off & restarting multiple times if you are having bad weather or power issues.

  • Is there a way to put a slight delay into hot corner activation?

I have my hot corners set up for Spaces, Expose, DashBoard etc. I find it pretty frustrating that I momentarily invoke a hot corner action every time I go for the Apple menu, or the trash, or something on the far left side of my over-populated dock. It's especially annoying when DashBoard kicks in doing this. I assume Apple made a user selectable delay on spring loaded folders to avert similar frustrations.
Is there some 'defaults write com.apple.blah...' command that fixes this?

I don't know of a delay function, but you can add a modifier key to the activation.
In the System Preferences, while you are setting up that corner for activation, press the modifier key (e.g., shift) then select the function (e.g., spaces). To use it, you'd have to have the modifier key pressed BEFORE you move the mouse to that corner for activation to work.

  • My iMac Display doesn't work!

I hear the sound when he starts but the display stays dark! why?
    Please Help me!!!

First, detach any peripheral devices except keyboard/mouse. Then reset the SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If that doesn't change anything, follow the steps in this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 . When you get to the section on using Disk Utility to repair the disk, use Lion recovery mode by booting with command and R held down. Assuming of course by then you can view something on the screen. If the screen still doesn't work, take it in for service.

  • Iphone doesn't stay on when powered on

My iPhone will not power on.  The only way to have it come on and just for a few seconds, is to press the home and the power buttons at the same time.  Is there a solution to this problem?

    Hello BrookieLove,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To troubleshoot this issue where your iPhone is turning off on its own please follow the steps below.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

    Take care,

  • BatteryPower, doesn't fall asleep when battery empty.. keeps running

    Hi,
I'm having a weird "problem"/"feauture" (depends on how you see it :P)
When i'm running on batterypower, and the battery reachers 1%, it sticks there
where it normally falls asleep... I can just keep working. This worries me because I don't want to kill the internal battery for when it is asleep :\
I don't remember where I saw it, but in some little app i read that my battery capacity is merely 55mAh (or something like that) That's not much
Could it just be that the battery isn't at 1% at all... but at like +/- 50% ?
Maybe the battery gives wrong information or something... is there a safe reset for it somewhere?
    Thanks in advance

Try booting into OS 9 and see if the problem exists there, too. If so, it is probably your reed switch at fault.
Apple says not to run it with the display closed.

  • Retina iMac Display doesn't turn on

    Hi guys,
my new iMac just arrived. I unpacked it, put it on my desk and turned it on... The "turn-on"-sound was there, but the display is blinking just for a second on, and then it turns off - a few seconds later it turns for a moment on and then it turns off again... In that moments in which the screen is on, I can see the setup display...
So what should I do? I can call no one from Apple Support because there's no one there anymore
The iMac is brand new and came right out of Shanghai
Did someone else did have this problem?
    Greetings,
    Linda

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • IMac display doesn't fit flush?

The display has a slight gap on the top edge and the glass itself is shifted a bit left so it's can't fit flush to frame.  I think over time dust will get in there and be a problem.  Has anyone ever had this happen and can it be fixed?

I found it! He had somehow set the zoom on the trackpad. I've never used that feature before, so I didn't even know that could be done.
