Imac Display flickering between brightness?

Hi guys,
My imac 11,2 Intel icore3. Is starting to flicker???
It changes between brightness levels dark/light dark/light?? Doesn't go black, just changes contrast levels.
I do not have the setting to adjust brightness automatically. Just the one, before it goes to sleep, and its unchecked. And still decides to flicker at random times?
Please help,

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • IMac display at lowest brightness after overnight shutdown

I've got an iMac 1.8 GHz running OS X 10.4.8. After the machine is shut down overnight, the screen brightness is set to its lowest setting. Going into the system prefs and setting it to high again fixes it again in the short term until another extended off period.
I tested this by rebooting the iMac (normal) and also shutting it down then starting it up again (screen brightness normal).
However, after a night or weekend shut down, the screen brightness is once again set to its lowest setting.
I've tried zapping the PRAM in open firmware. The only other thing I can think of to do is to reinstall the OS.
    Any tips appreciated.

Downer. I looked at this thread because my iMac is doing the same thing. Guess I will have to keep on turning the brightness up each time.
F14 and F15 do brightness controls on my iMac; saves having to do system prefs each time.

  • IMac display mirroring

I have an iMac G5 which is having some issues with video mirroring. When I try plugging a TV into it via the Apple video adapter, the imac display flickers, indicating it has adjusted to the new display, but there is no image on the TV. The System Preferences indicates that there is a "VGA Display" attached. (I believe that is supposed to say "NTSC/PAL." That is what my PowerBook says in any case)
Now however I have a new problem. The Apple Video Adapter is unplugged but the iMac still thinks that the "VGA Display" (actually the apple video adapter) is plugged in. It is stuck at a certain resolution (1028x768) and if i put it at a higher resolution it still shows only 1028x728 pixels, except now they are in the middle of the screen with a black border around it. (I believe this is normal behavior.... for when a TV is actually attached)
Any ideas? Both for the first problem (iMac thinks TV is a VGA Display) and the second (iMac thinks there's an external display attached when there is not). Thanks.

  • Brightness/Flickering problem with left hand side of 2011 iMac display

    Hi,
My 2011 iMac has recently developed a fault with the left hand side of the display flickering and being very dark. I've googled this and found that many other people seem to have this issue. As per other forum posts, if I apply a little pressure to the bottom left of the screen then this temporarily resolves itself, but this is obviously not a permanent solution.
I'm not happy as my £1500 iMac is only 18 months old, and I've been told from an authorised apple repair centre, that it's going to cost £600 to fix.
I've spent the best part of an hour trying to call apple to speak to a human being, but the automated voice menu wants to charge me £35 before even putting me through. Does anyone have a phone number which would allow me to speak to a real person so I can make a complaint?
    Paul.

Sounds like it will be an international call (and sounds like you have all the local numbers), but you might try calling Cupertino and then ask for customer support

Unless there were some repair program for this issue, if it's out of warranty, I doubt you'll get very far with it.

  • Imac display brightness has dropped

For the last few weeks, my 27" imac (2011) has been experiencing random flickering where the display would flicker between it's set brightness and medium brightness, but it was never something that I would be able to predict or trigger.  Then last night my display flickered and and stayed dimmer.
The display is still visibile and backlight still works, but at full brightness in a fairly dark room, the display is now noticably dimmer than it was before, where before hand in a dark room it was necessary to drop the brightness to below half to where now it is just right in a dark room, but in a lit room the display isn't quite bright enough.  Basically the display is not as bright as it used to be, any idea what it could be?

  • Display alternates between dark and bright

I have several issues but I suspect somehow they are all related as they all began about the same time, within about an hour of each other, which was maybe a week ago.
Periodically, my display slowly cycles between dark and bright.  Sometimes the display will suddenly go to sleep on it's own, usually after a period of about 20 seconds of me not doing something and when I wake it up the display is quite dim.  Other times the computer goes to sleep (not just the display) requiring me to log back on.  I use password for startup.  I open the display settings after log-on and the brightness slider has somehow moved way over to the dark end (left).  I slide it up to where I like it and soon it does it again all by itself again after a very short period of inactivity.  I have noticed that if I leave the brightness control alone (dim) without readjusting it it seems to take longer for the other issues to develop.  I would normally place the brightness slider just under half way up.  My sleep time settings are currently: computer - 1 hr, display 15 min.  That is plugged in which is pretty much the only way I ever seem to use it ... plugged in.
Another issue is an occaisional rapid beeping.  It's the same low beep that you hear when you try to do something stupid and the computer is telling you you've made an error.  The difference is this is a long, unending string of rapid beeps; I'd estimate maybe 15 - 20 beeps per second.  The sound does not stop.  I have to mute the speakers to shut it up.  I have not yet been able to determine a recognizable pattern of common variables for when this happens.  The other day when the computer went to sleep by itself and I woke it and tried to input my password and I saw that the input bar was filled with black balls as if it was remembering my password which I did not like but when I hit enter the logon dilaog box shook, the entry field emptied and refilled on it's own.  I held the backspace key for several seconds and nothing seemed to happen.  I used shift/command/arrow to highlight the entire string and deleted it but as soon as the characters were deleted I saw the input line quickly fill back up again one ball at a time at roughly the same rate as the beeps.  Then it occured to me that the beeps were similar to those you would hear if you held a key down and filled an entire entry field with a hundred of a particular character and was still holding down the key long after the field was full.  My first thought was that a key was stuck down.  Not so.  Each and every key is free to move and functions normally.
Last night I closed the lid to put the computer to put it sleep before I went to bed.  About 3 hours later I was awakened by the sound of the rapid beeping.  I got out of bed and went to the computer and opened the lid to find the same input line black balls issue but this time it was accompanied by the beeping and the display was also cycling between bright and dim.  As it was the middle of the night I killed the machine by holding down the power button and forcing a shutdown.  This evening I decided to do the upgrade from 10.9.1 to 10.9.2 hoping that might help but it did not.  I have not heard the beeping since the upgrade but the display is still cycling, which was the first thing I noticed when all of this began.

Turns out it may have been sofware issue.  I suspected software anyway because rebooting could temporarily cure it.  I spoke to an Apple Service and Support person on the phone.  She went through a fairly lengthy process with me to evaluate the machine and determine if it was hardware or software related.   The results of those steps did not lead her to any concrete conclusions but she was able to hear the beeping issue happening in real time.   She guided me through the steps of O/S recovery and now several hours later the machine appears to be functioning as it is supposed to.  Typically the issue(s) would show up after maybe twenty minutes or a half hour after a hard boot.  I am to monitor the thing for the next week or so watching for any signs of the issues slowly returning.
    Here's keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Screen flickers between dim and bright when on battery

Hi - I've had my S10 for about a month now and overall am quite pleased with it.
One annoyance I've come across is that when I am on battery (IE no AC plugged in) the screen sometimes flickers between dim (what it should be) and bright for about a second and dims down again. It will do that ever 4-5 mins or so.
It seems as if the power management on the computer is a little on the fritz and can't decide if it's on be dim because it's on battery or if it should be bright because it's on AC
    Anyone else experience this?

Im sure everyone experienced this with their S10's ... I would say it's normal because it changes power management to a lower grade... anyway I would say it's a sort of "hello... need attention" that your s10 is saying to you... It normally ocurs when your battery is low and you need to plug the cord cause it's running out of battery...

  • RH 10 is suddenly flickering between pagination and displaying

I am trying to work on a topic, but RH 10 is "flickering"... the lower right hand corner status (at the very bottom of the PM pane)  is flickering between "Pagination" and "Displaying".  The font and font size is flickering, and the Paragraph and Character Styles pod list is flickering from "Normal" thru the list and then back to "Normal" in a split second.  I cannot work in the topic...This seems to be happening no matter what topics I'm in... as well as if I create a new topic.
I did some PM organization of images and topics... and it was fine until then.  I have made all the updates I can find, restarted my system, uninstalled and reinstalled RH and reapplied the updates.
What the heck is going on?  HELP!

    Hi there
I'd be shocked (and very skeptical) if someone were to pop in and say something like: It happened because you had... (insert reason here).
The thing is, there are a multitude of things that could be done to a project to cause this or that kind of a result. So all we can do is really guess at things.
So having said that, here's some food for thought.
When you work with RoboHelp, lots and lots of files are involved that track different aspects of the project. The main project database exists as a "ProjectName.XPJ" file. And another database exists as a "ProjectName.CPD" file. I do believe I've noticed that RoboHelp will sort of "flicker" as it attempts to ensure these two files are in sync. Sometimes we find that the .CPD becomes corrupt and will need to be deleted. When we delete it, as RoboHelp opens the project with the missing CPD, it sees the CPD is missing and sets about baking up a fresh one. And that process can cause the flickering as the database is rebuilt. How long it may take and you would see this would vary depending on the complexity of your project.
Not sure if it helps or not, but perhaps it explains why you are seeing what you are seeing.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Imac 21.5 (ver 10.6.8) Display flickers and it goes blank

Display flickers and its brightness automatically increases and decreases intermittently. After some time the Display goes blank and it doesn't appear even after pressing the power button or restarting the PC. At times it does appear after pressing the power button frequently or if the PC is left ON for some time. I am using software ver 10.6.8. Want to whether this problem will be resolved after upgrading it to Mavericks. But I am worried that during the downloading if the display goes off and if I have to restart the PC then I will have to start the downloading from the beginning. Please suggest.

  • Display and keyboard brightness problems.

Hi all, I'm having some rather annoying problems with my display and keyboard brightness on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2008). Both the display and keyboard pulse between as dim as they can get without going black and as bright as they can get at least once a day and eventually settle at the brightest possible setting. I cannot lower the brightness level once this has settled without the pulsing starting over again. I currently have the auto adjust brightness on for both, because whenever I try to turn it off to try and stop any adjustments other than manual the pulsing gets exponentially worse. We're talking full-blown spastic fit (faster and much longer lasting dim to bright pulsing as well as flickering of the display). Any help here would be greatly appreciated, because I'm out of ideas at this point. Thanks

Ok, so after giving the backlights a thorough test last night and this morning, they are still squirrely. After resetting the SMC the pulsing is definitely not as bad and the flickering seems to have stopped, but the pulsing is still there and still far worse when the auto-adjust is turned off. Maybe I'll just have to deal with it. It is much better than it was and at least it's settling to the dimmest point rather than the brightest point now.

  • Intel imac display glitch and involuntary restart

Just want to know if anyone else has experienced this specific problem, there are plenty of complaints about intel imac displays but I can't be bothered to sift through them all trying to find a match for my problem.
A couple of months ago I was watching a video in quicktime and noticed that my screen was glitching and flashing fragmented diagonal lines - like a commodore 64 loading type thing. Then the spinning-ball came up and a force quit didn't do anything so I had to force shut down. I started up and it occured again. Then the screen went blank/black, but still lit up, and restarted without me doing anything. It also got stuck during start up the second time this occured. I panicked and ran out to buy a 500GB external drive, backed up all of my work and then re-installed mac osx from disk, archive and install job. This seemed to sort it and for the following two months it seemed OK. No sign of any problems.
Since then I have updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 (which I have suspicion that it screwed the firmware in my motu 828 firewire audio interface, costing me a £130 repair - but that's another painful story).
It happened again tonight (the screen thing, not the motu). And the ball came up and I couldn't do anything. Force shut down, restart - screen glitching again. Then I had 2 unexpected restarts, one getting stuck in startup. Then a successful startup but accompanied by the glitchy graphics, mainly red/pink pixellated diagonal lines flickering in and out. I ran a disk first aid - no problems. Did a disk permission repair. Shut down and ran a hardware test, the first few minutes of the test the screen was still at it but then stopped glitching, hardware test found no errors (it was an extended test too). Now I'm back on it and it's all OK.
    Any suggestions/similar stories?
When it occured 2 months ago I had the original ram that came with the imac. Now I have 2x1GB sticks of crucial ram.

That's it! Well, that's what I have. Unfortunately, I don't know about the cause, but I don't ever recall having it prior to an update going back about a year ago. I recall an update, and that update being immediately followed by some sort of Apple Graphics something-or-other. I feel pretty certain that's when I first noticed this. I just had my LCD replaced for another reason, but I think you'll agree, it's not an LCD issue. In my case, browser activity, scrolling up or down in a page, seems to be the most common trigger. I've also seen "pieces" of the torn page, on the screen when minimizing the browser to the dock (usually Firefox, but I think I've seen it with Opera and Safari too). Is there a way to find update packages installed somewhere? I'd know it if I saw it, and I'd definitely try removing that suspect package/update.

  • Facing "Display Flickering" problem with my 15" macbook pro(A1286)while swapping the desktops and closing the tabs.....need help...reply soon

Suggest Solution for this Display Flickering problem ....

Hi, I read the post about calibration and I probably do that a little too often TBH! As I get so little time out the battery and mainly use my MBP on my lap, usually with the power supply near by, it gets charged to full, run to empty to the point of sleep, or sometimes it even cuts out and then is recharged to full again, so I really think it's new battery time. I've seen non Apple Official ones for between £35 and £65 that have 3 year warranties and state they are around 5200mh but am unsure due to reviews.
    Later...
Anyway's I have now ordered a non Apple replacement from Amazon for about £35 and it has several good reviews and 4.5 out of 5 stars so I'll see if it works and report back. If it doesn't I'll send it back and get the Official Apple one.

  • IMac display getting yellow when external display is attached?

    Hi,
I have a problem with my IMac (27'' Mid 2010):
I have an external TV attached via MDP->DVI->HDMI cable. When I turn on the TV, the iMac recognizes it and the iMac display turns blue shortly, then the desktop returns and my TV is ready.
What I noticed: After the desktop returns, the iMac sometimes suddenly becomes "more yellow". Don't know exactly how to describe it, but I can clearly see how the desktop returns and then suddenly the imac display turns a little yellow, could also be that the display just gets a little darker (although the display brightness is the same as before). it's nothing that really disturbs me, and although I never saw the color return to normal it does (but I think only after rebooting the iMac)
anything on this? anyone else noticed that?

    Hi nachdenki
I've used both TV's and Monitors with my iMac over the years and that default iMac Profile has always looked yellow in comparison. Try one of those other sRGB, RGB Profiles or create a new Color Profile for the iMac's display.
