IMac display issues / Trying to output at 1920x1080 through VGA

I'm having some external display issues with my 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (2.4ghz). Using the mini-DVI to VGA adapter, I plugged the VGA cable into a Samsung LCD TV (PC mode). When I originally had everything set up, I was using the TV as an extended display, with a display setting of 1920x1080.
However, I had to get a 25 foot VGA extension cable, and now my maximum resolution is 1600x1200. Does anyone know why extending the VGA cable would do this?

There could be any number of factors involved, but cheap cabling, or that your Mac does not have enough power to push the high quality resolution signal that distance first come to mind.

All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • 24" iMac display issues

OK, the display brightness issue exsists. There is some software out there that does help (Gamma Control). So it seems like it can be fixed. Is Apple going to address this issue?
Some people are saying that Apple is catering to the average consumer (watching movies, web, etc.) Is that why they came up with the riduculous glossy displays on their laptops?

  • IMac Display Issues Not Resolved

The Apple Store at La Cantera in San Antonio Needs Help!
I purchased my first personal iMac on May 17, 2006. It was a reconditioned model. Granted, I work for a very large urban school district in technology, I decided that the Intel Mac was for me. Within ten minutes of receiveing my iMac from Fed-ex the display began to show pinkish and green pixels all over the screen. I took the unit in that day to the Apple "Geniuses" at my local store. They booted it and immediately ordered a new MLB and LCD. I was told by the Apple support site it would be ready the 23rd of May. The day came and went and no iMac. On the 25th the store now reported that they were waiting on a Bluetooth Chip that they had broken during my repair. So, I was forced to wait over the Memorial Day weekend and finally received my iMac today. After ten minutes of use, I noticed the same exact problem I took it in for. It was as if no one had repaired it! I checked my System Profiler and noticed that my one gig stick of ram had been replaced by two sticks of 256MB of RAM! Wow! Where did my RAM go? The manager said he trusted the integrity of his techs. Does that mean he doesn't trust mine? Sadly, I am returning my iMac and will probably never make the Switch. I really wanted to. But, Apple is just not ready to please their customers.

    How is it going on?

  • T61 Problem: Getting external monitor to display 1920x1080 through VGA

I've got the Nvidia 195.62 drivers, but windows still shows a max resolution of 1600x1200 for a 1920x1080 lcd screen.  I'm using the VGA out.
    This is frustrating.

Which windows version do you use?
I think if  windows recognizes your monitor, it would be okey.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.3 display issues with Autodesk Combustion 2008

    Hi!!
Recently i do a update to 10.6.3 and my combustion got some glitches and display issues trying to browse thumbnail folders... even frozing combustion (I know, the software its old, and I know about the incompatibility since 10.6, footage issue, and others, but my boss doesnt care about it)
(Autodesk Maya '10 too, but theres a post for that)
So, in 10.6.2 I can browse previews of folders, but with 10.6.3 combustion comes unstable (yea.. more, hahaha). Apple has posted a new 10.6.3 v1.1 revision today 14th april...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017
and they said: *"address compatibility issues with OpenGL-based applications"*
Anyone has yet combustion and tested with the new 10.6.3 revision 1.1??? I cant loose a day of job updating, and if its the case, downgrading and resintalling all again... with my boss eyes over me..
    Thanks!

Nutshell is to download and install the 64-bit version of MySQL, then try again. If you're still stuck try force re-installing the DBD modules, e.g. cpan -fi DBD::mysql (The perl installed in 10.6.x is 64-bit and doesn't like playing with the 32-bit database.)

  • I have an issue with disappearing option for 1920x1080 in Preferences / Displays.

Recently updated to 10.9 - have all updates installed - Mid 2010 iMac 21.5.
I have an issue with disappearing option for 1920x1080 in Preferences / Displays. - After overnight shutdown, my iMac woke up and the screen resolution of my 2nd was set at 800 x 600 - the display a Samsung S22B150 was previously working properly at 1920 x 1080.  This option is no longer available in the system preferences - highest resolution available 1600 x 1200.
I use my mMac for Photography and use the second monitor for the interface, leaving the iMac screen as a full work area for the photos.
    I have tried:
    Power down Monitor & restart
    Shutdown & restart
Shutdown & restart in Safe Boot Mode (options same in Prefs)
Power down Monitor & restart in Safe Boot Mode
Ran Disc Utility - Repaired Permissions, verified both HDD & Mac OSX
    Udated Pram
I am now at a loss, I guess I could try a recovery, and download/install  Mavericks again, but do not wish to do this if I can help it.
I have searched the net to see if there are any Terminal commands to enable the resolution, but can find nothing.
Anyone out there have any ideas, please.

Back up all data. Quit System Preferences if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return. A folder should open. If it does, look for a file with a long name that begins "com.apple.preference.displays2". There may be several such files. Move them to the Trash.
    Test.

  • Repeated iMac Problems, Display Issues now Kernel Panics

I’m lost on what’s wrong with my 2008 iMac and I think I just have to bring it back into Apple for a third time to have it repaired. But something is obviously not working that is causing these issues.
About a month ago, my computer began showing heavy pixilation, flickering images and the on-screen graphics. The computer appeared to keep working in the background from what I could tell so I came to conclusion that it must be the graphics card that’s failing and I’ll need to have it looked at.
My 2008 iMac was custom-built by Apple with the Nvidia GeForce 8800GS that was offered as an upgrade option. There have been several posts on the display and graphics discussion board about that graphics card along with other postings other places about the problems the Nvidia GeForce 8-series had.
The display problems I mention above would not happen immediately, it would happen as the computer warmed up and was used for 3-5 minutes.
Anyway I brought my computer into Apple explained to them what I believed was the problem and the Apple Store technician agreed with me. Because I did not purchase AppleCare, it cost me $400 and a week without my iMac to have that card replaced.
I got the computer back two weeks ago and everything seemed fine. It was working as it always had. I even was running SMC Fan Control in order to keep the computer as cool as I could (the Nvidia problem was related to overheating).
But this morning, this is what I woke up to:
    http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/7436/photoijr.jpg
The computer now has a semi-permanent pixilation when it starts up (as suppose to the pixilation 3-5 minutes into use). But more worrisome now is I cannot start up the computer without it going into a kernel panic. I tried resetting the PRAM, I tried starting in safe mode. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is booting from an external HD which I will try this evening (to hopefully isolate it if it’s hardware or a software problem).
The Apple Hardware Test has been unhelpful. When it originally failed three weeks ago, the test showed nothing and this morning when I ran it (permanent pixilation and all), it showed nothing. I feel like if it was a software issue the pixilation would have disappeared during the hardware test because that’s not an OS-X based program.
Here are my specs on this computer:
2008 iMac 24" 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo, 4 gigs of RAM (Crucial Purchased, I have original sticks somewhere), 1 TB HD, Nvidia GeForce 8800GS.

Hi, just to update you, I came home today and did a few things that didn't seem to solve my Mac's problems:
    - I booted up from my firewire "safe" drive that I keep a copy os x on to see if I had a corrupted hard drive or something. It booted into the kernel panic I described above.
    - I also swapped out the crucial RAM for Apple's factory RAM. It also booted into the Kernel Panic.
In both incidents, the display issues didn't go away. Now instead of pixelization i have vertical bars running in a pattern across my screen.
I'm currently trying to boot onto the OS X CD at this point to see if I could do a reinstall. It's taking quite awhile to boot into that.
With that in mind, I think we're still having graphics card issues or more seriously some logic board problem.

  • How do i use my imac 21.5" 2011 as a display for my macbook pro late 2011, through thunderbolt cable ? I have tried and it doesnt seem to work, neither does target disk mode.

How do i use my imac 21.5" 2011 as a display for my macbook pro late 2011, through thunderbolt cable ? I have tried and it doesnt seem to work, neither does target disk mode.
Could it be a borked cable ? I just bought it new from the store today, i have updated both imac and macbook pro to latest thunderbolt firmware and updates. Both 10.7.3.

You are correct, here is what Apple Says:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3775
I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.

  • Is it possible to display Windows PC video output on an iMac via Thunderbolt?

Is it possible to display Window PC video output on an iMac via Thunderbolt?

Currently the ThunderBolt iMacs can only be used as an external display by other ThunderBolt Macs.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Thunderbolt/10.6/en/30822.html
When there is a Windows PC with ThunderBolt released it might work as well.
And/or when there will be ThunderBolt devices which enable this.
The Intensity Extreme http://www.blackmagic-design.com/uk/products/intensity/ might allow this once it is released.

Why does my iMac display keep shutting off?  Computer still running in the background.  I've tried unplugging and restarting, to no avail.    The computer is well out of warranty - about 7-8 years old, running 10.6.8

Checked.... the settings had not been inadvertently changed, but I did move the scroll and reset them back to the original.   Hasn't shut off again.... yet.   Will re-post with follow-up one way or the other.   Thanks.

  • Anyone experienced dust issues yet on the newest 27'' 2013 Imac (display) ?

    Hello,
I just ordered the newest Imac 27'' from the store and was very happy and excited at first but it slowly faded as i read on about the display issues which seemed quite common on the previous imacs  (dust inside the imac, panel removal etc.) and now i'm torn between sending it straight back or keeping it.
I bought this imac with the intention to last at least 4-5 years but after reading through all the messages i'm not sure about the quality of this apple product anymore - sadly.
I also have to say that i am still an university student who can't afford switching panels all the time (no apple care) when i know it only helps out temporarly and the main problem probably lies somewhere deep inside the imac.
So any information or experience regarding the dust development within new imacs would be helpful thank you !

after reading through all the messages i'm not sure about the quality of this apple product anymore - sadly.
You should keep in mind that these are technical support forums. Generally, the only people posting here are those with problems. The thousands/millions without problems don't ever come here.  Think of this place as an emergency room/hospital for comps.  If you want to a review of your model iMac, do a Google search for news articles rather than a "technical support" message board.  Read all the reviews you find.
Since you are a student, you are entitled for a student discount on AC.  You were also entitled to one on your new iMac too.  Did you get it?

  • Output display issue in only a particular user account.

Let me start off by noting that I recently switched to mac from windows. Last night I was browsing around the system just getting a feel for the environment when the color / display changed and looked something like a display one would see from booting up in safe mode on a windows machine. I went on to restart and log back into the user account where I was having the display issue, but that did not work. I ran the tech tool deluxe suite to try and find the problem, maybe the video ram? That test came back with no issues to report. I went into the administrator account and found that the display there was normal, and then checked the problem account once more to find that my problem was not solved. Luckily I did not have a lot of information on the problem account so I went onto delete the problem account and recreated a new one. This solved my display issues. Does anyone have any idea why this would have happened or what I can do to prevent it from happening? Should I contact Apple because I am not sure if this may be a hardware/software issue/defect? Thanks.

If you open the Universal Access pane in System Preferences and select "White on Black" in the Seeing tab does that replicate the problem? I'm not familiar with Safe mode on a Windows machine.
