IMac display not working

Hello all,
I purchased a refurbed 20" iMac that arrived 3 days ago. Today I turned the computer on and put in a CD to listen to while I was doing some work. After about 30 minutes of the CD running I went I tried to bring the display back up (it had gone to sleep after the arbitrary amount of time). The display refused to come back on, but iTunes still seemed to be working fine. I could stop and start the CD using both keyboard commands and the remote.
I held down the power switch, shut the machine down, waited, and tried to start it up again. Same problem. It started up, but nothing from the display. I can insert a CD and it will play fine, but I cannot get anything from my display, it's just black.
Any thoughts?
The only thing I had done before hand was install an Epson R220 printer that didn't seem to be working properly, but didn't seem to be affecting my other systems. I disconnected the printer from the computer before starting up again.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Mark

Wow! It's been 3 days and no one has replied to your question. I know there are people on these forums much more knowledgable than I, but if you haven't got it going yet I would first call Applecare and get their input. I assume you bought it from Apple or it is at least under warranty with Apple. Something else you might try is connect an external monitor via a mini-dvi to vga adaptor ($19) and look at the system profiler to see if the lcd display is listed. You can also check the display preference and try different resolutions to see if any work. Whatever the outcome, I hope you'll post your results. Good luck.

  • 20" iMac, display not working properly, otherwise OK

I have a 20" imac with 10.4.11 loaded, Have had it for about 2 years, no problems at all except occasional wake-from-sleep issue. All of a sudden, the display has quit working properly. The computer sounds like it boots fine, but the display only shows a very deep blue (not black)and the light ind the lower right corner is "on".
I tried holding a flashlight up to the front as some have suggested, and I do not see see anything at all. This would seem to rule out backlighting or screen brightness issues. I have also reset the PSU and the P-ram, also to no effect. Tried booting from the 10.4 disk, also to no effect.
My teenagers won't admit having any problems, but one of them did admit to turning off the system several times using the power button in an attempt to reset AirPort. Any thoughts? the only other easy thing I can think of is the battery, could that be causing this much trouble? do the display cables ever detatch from the MB or anything like that? any ideas greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric

    Hey Eric,
This is from the Service Source:
"Screen is dark, fan is running and the hard drive is spinning. You may hear the startup
    chime as well.
    1. Reset parameter RAM. Press Command-Option-P-R during startup before “Welcome to Macintosh”
    appears.
    2. The system software could be damaged. Start up from the system CD that came with the computer.
    3. Remove the user access panel on the bottom of the computer. With the unit powered on, check if a red
LED is visible in the access door. If the red LED is on, power is on. If you don’t see the LED glowing
red, follow the steps under the symptom “No Power”.
    4. Disconnect the A/C power cord. Place the unit in the service stand and remove the user access plate.
Press the PMU reset button on the logic board. Refer to “Resetting the PMU on the Logic Board”
    mentioned earlier in this chapter.
    5. Check for external video. Connect an external monitor to the mini-VGA port. If you don’t have external
video, replace the main logic board. If you do have external video, go on to the next step.
    6. Open the bottom housing and verify that all the cables are securely attached. Pay special attention to
the video cable (located near the modem). If the cables are securely attached, go on to the next step.
Warning: Whenever the bottom housing is opened for service, you must do two things:
    • You must clean the original thermal film from the surfaces joining the thermal interface layer and
reapply thermal paste to the thermal pipe.
    • The bottom housing has four torx screws that must be tightened to at least 17 in.-lbs. If you do not
have a torque driver, you will have to make sure these screws are tightened by hand FIRMLY, BUT
NOT FORCIBLY. Or, purchase the service tool (076-0899) in order to ensure the thermal pipe is
firmly mated with the top base. If the bottom housing is not securely attached to the base in this
fashion, the CPU may overheat and become damaged.
    7. Check the connection of the video cable to the LCD flat panel display (under black tape).
    8. Replace the inverter board.
    9. Replace the LCD display. Important: If you are replacing the display, be sure to install the new display
shield and EMI gaskets that come with the new LCD panel. Installation instructions are included with
the new display panel. Additional display shields/gasket kits are also available separately as a kit, part
    #076-0958.
    10. Replace the neck assembly
    11. Replace the logic board.
    12. Replace the power supply board."
In my experience the connectors both on the logic board and on the back of the LCD panel have been known to come loose. I also have a neck assembly here that went bad.
If you need more info email me.

  • Imac Display not working at all

I'm using the latest release of Leopard on my iMac that is less than a couple of months old and the display just went off, totally black and I cannot get it back on.
    I have tried:
    - Unplugging all peripherals and rebooting
    - Resetting the PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238)
    - Resetting the System Management Controller (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446)
What is strange is that I left the machine running for a couple of hours and went back to it, waking it from sleep by touching the keyboard and the display actually came back on and I thought it was miraculously fixed. However, as soon as I touched the mouse the display went off again and I haven't been able to get it back.
I can hear the machine when it boots and I know it's starting ok because I can hear the noises when I turn the volume up and down using the keyboard. Because the display did come back, although extremely briefly, I reckon it has to be a software problem.
What's really frustrating is that I haven't got screen sharing turned on and I'm writing this from my MacBook which I could use to try to diagnose the problem.
I have figured out all the keyboard commands I need to bring up the screen sharing dialogue but I don't know what the keyboard command is to tick a check box!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Paul.

Luckily mine is still under warranty, but it is still away being repaired.
Strangely I discovered that it would still run an external monitor (but i couldn't set it to be primary) so the problem can't be with the graphics card.
This whole experience (combined with numerous separate issues I have had with Leopard) has certainly tainted my view of Apple.

  • HT203421 Since installing Yosemite 10.10 the Apps Store application on my iMac does not work

installing Yosemite 10.10 the Apps Store application on my iMac does not work properly. Applications show up in the App Store window to be updated but in fact most of them do not download and install. Some 3rd party software does download and install but most Apple and HP Applications do not. They appear in some cases in both the Ready to update or install list and in the "Installed in the last 30 days list". In some cases when I click on "Update" it shows in the "Installed in the Last 30 Days list" but it is not installed.  In the case of the latest Yosemite 10.10.3 beta down load, it momentarily show up like it is downloading but then disappears and does not install.

I am now using Yosemite 10.10.2 and am trying to install the beta Download Yosemite 10.10.3 hoping it will resolve my problem but starts to download from the App Store snd then quits.

  • Caller display not worked since June 2014

On 26/06/14 I reported a fault (VOL-**********) that the caller display function had stopped working following a thunderstorm in the area. According to the fault status this fault is showing as being corrected and closed on 02/07/14 when in fact the fault still exists. I tested the line using the BT test socket with a new BT2000 phone and this displayed ‘incoming call’ therefore my internal wiring is not part of the problem. I have also dialled the test code *#234# to check if the caller display service is available and confirmed that it is. I then tested the new BT2000 phone on the neighbour’s telephone line and this showed the caller ID for incoming calls, as did my other telephone as well; therefore none of the telephone handsets are at fault. Three times BT have informed me that the fault has been fixed and yet I still have no caller display. Reading through the forums it would appear that other people have encountered similar issues and that the problem is at the exchange, “An Openreach engineer discovered that the RS232 burst transferring the CLI number up the line was too weak and he then went down to the exchange to investigate. He then discovered that the fault lay in the ADSL device which lies between the analogue exchange equipment and the outgoing line”.
I’m surprised to see that BT are taking so long to trace a fault in their system last raised 5/8/2014 (VOL012-**********) and that they haven’t sent an engineer to the property or to the exchange to check the problem.
My patience is wearing thin over this problem with my Caller Display not working as it started in mid June. I’m also becoming less enthusiastic about BT and find it harder to recommend them to others.
My last message from BT, tells me that it should be back to normal on the 8 August. However, it is still not working. Their message that my phone should be back to normal now and if it isn’t report this to BT, is ridiculous. If an engineer had investigated what was causing the fault and found it, then he would have fixed it. However, either an engineer has not investigated the fault or BT is not competent in fixing their own service faults and makes these statements with crossed fingers?

An engineer called yesterday and told me that he had been asked to test the line for a voice fault not a Caller Display fault. However, his testing revealed there is no line fault, CLI signal is strong and he was happy that the new BT2000 phone (bought after the lightning strike) is working properly. (This phone had also been tested on a neighbour’s phone line where it displayed the callers number). He also found that this same BT2000 phone on my line was not displaying the Caller’s number (CLI), but couldn’t offer any reason why.
I conjectured with him that these tests must bring the problem down to a corrupted CLI signal which does not allow the phone to understand the phone number being sent.
When the lightning struck the phone line back in June, it blew the telephone connection in the back of the Sky Box with a flash and bang (telephone cable now removed from the Sky box). It shorted the Openreach Faceplate (now replaced) so that the phones and broadband stopped working and it caused the phone to light up and react as it does when a call comes through.
Now isn’t it possible that the lightning also travelled along the copper wire to the green cabinet just outside the house and damaged something there which is corrupting the CLI signal, but which does not not show up when the voice line is tested? If not, then there must be a problem further back in the infrastructure, possibly in the Exchange, that is causing a corrupted signal to be sent to my phone?
He told me that another team would have to investigate the Caller Display fault as he was instructed to look into a voice issue and as a field engineer he was not able to investigate any problem that might be in the Exchange. I don’t know whether this Exchange Team would be able to investigate a problem in the Cabinet if nothing is found in the Exchange or can that only be done by a field engineer? He told me to contact BT again as he’d done all that he had been instructed to do and they would have to instigate a fault team to further investigate the problem.
When all this is considered we have the basic problem that BT are unable to provide me with a Privacy and Caller Display Service that I have been paying for, because of a fault in their infrastructure. How much longer is it going to take before they correct the problem that’s been going on since June 2014?

  • Display not working

    Hi,
I am using Lenovo G510 Laptop. First I was getting an error of bad signature file which was stopping windows from loading.

Hard disk light is on, battery power light also turns on when I turn on the laptop. But not showing any display. Dear sir,
I gave my laptop to an  HP authorized service centre in Ernakulum (Vertex techno solutions Bangalore Pvt ltd, Ernakulum) No: 2550, on 04/12/2014 . • Any ideas why the video camera on my imac is not working?

Does any one have any idea why the video camera on my imac is not working? I have been using skype on my imac for some time and recently I have discovered that it wont work, could this have anything to do with the mountain lion upgrade?

    Have a look here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090?viewlocale=en_US
I think I'd start with the SMC reset.

    Hello,
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Two BenQ external displays not working with new 27" iMac

I have a 27" iMac (newest model) and have been using it with a BenQ BL2710 monitor.  It's connected with a mini display port to display port cable.  It's been working great; I found that I had to uncheck the 'Displays have separate spaces' box in Mission Control, so I have the menu bar on the iMac'd display only.
Now, I have a 2nd BenQ BL2710 that I'm trying to hook up the same way, using the iMac's 2nd thunderbolt port.  The display powers up and all 3 screens look perfect.  The problem is getting the arrangement correct.  I have the dock on one display, the menu bar on another, and the mouse will only work on one or two of the displays, depending on how I change the arrangement.
I want the dock and the menu bar to be on the iMac's display ply, which is in the center.  Is there a trick to getting this done, or do I need a third party dock or other piece of hardware to get it to work?

I just answered my own question; apparently with two external displays connected, the dock has to be positioned on the bottom.  I had it on the right of the main iMac display.  Moving it to the bottom, and rearranging the position of the monitors in display preferences did the trick.
If anyone knows of a way to accomplish this without moving the dock to the bottom of the screen, I'd be interested.  I'd prefer it on the right side, if possible.

  • 2008 iMac, display not coming back after sleep, requiring SMC reset and more.

I have a 24" 2008 iMac that's recently started giving me migranes starting a couple weeks ago. It's the kids' shared computer in the bonus room, and one of them comes in and tells me it's not working. I go in, and it seems like it's off, but I can hear the fans going. Won't respond to mouse, keyboard, even hitting the power button that usually pops something up warning that I'm about to shut it down with people still logged in. So I hold the power button down to force it off, wait a minute, and turn it back on. I hear the superdrive sounding like it's trying to load a disc, but there's nothing in there . . . keeps making that noise again and again. No startup chime, no display, nothing, just the superdrive sound. Can't get it to boot. I come to the support site and go through resetting the SMC - unplugging it for 15 seconds. That at least takes care of the superdrive sound, and I get the startup chime, but no video.
I go a step further, unplugging it and plugging it back in while holding the power button down for 10 sec. When I hit the power button after that, it comes on, display nice and bright, but the fans are now running full speed. Another article tells me to reset the SMC for that, which I do, and now the fans are working properly and the system is working again.
Problem is, I wind up having to go through this whole thing every other day. If I follow the steps of unplugging it, holding the power button down while I plug it back in, turning it on and booting up, shutting down and resetting the SMC to make the fans slow down, it will work. But it's random as to when it happens, and I'd really like to know why it could be happening and what I can do to fix it for good and not have to go through the whole thing to get it back up and running. Is it simply on its last legs? Do I need to restore the OS (Snow Leopard upgrade)? Do I need to take it to the Genius Bar and pay them to look at it and diagnose it, and God knows how much to fix?
Or, do I recycle it and just bite the bullet and get a new one? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
    Andy

the first thing to try is resetting the pram/nvram
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
if this doesnt work it could be a loose display cable.

  • Emagic mt4 and intel iMac does not work with 10.4.5

    Hi there,
after updating my iMac on 10.4.5 my MT4 does not work any longer. It is still shown in the system profiler! But that`s it! After I`ve installed the latest driver (emagic v1.7), it was not shown in the audio/midi preferences. On my G4 with 10.3.9 it is still working properly. I have tried to use it with Garage Band 3, while I am waiting for Logic Pro 7.2 . It worked in the begining, but now the USB connection on the MT4 does not light up, but the midi devices. My question is: Do I need a driver using Logic Pro 7.2 with an Intel iMac? Includes the update the driver for Emagic MT4?
thanks a lot for any reply, experiences and clues

Hi all, I have a HP Envy M6-1158ca, and recently my Built-in display stopped working. I plugged it into an external display via HDMI and it showed no input. It seems as though the laptop is not booting into Windows either, as usually whenever my laptop boots into windows, the fingerprint scanner blinks letting me know I can now sign in using it. Yes.. i think thats what might have damaged it...Notebook should always be completely powered off with the battery out and ac adapter disconnected while  replacing any internal hardware..
Shouldnt be a BIOS problem....but still you can check this link..
