IMac does not power off when I shut down

I have an iMac with 10.7 as the operating system. When I power down the machine the screen goes gray and just stays in the gray mode until I hold the power key down manually. It starts up normally, just a "shut down" issue. I recently upgraded from 10.6 to 10.7 and had the same problem with 10.6 (not sure that means anything.) I am pretty sure this is not a good way to shut down a Mac.  Any ideas on what might be going on here? Thanks.

  • Toshiba 32RV635D does not power off when computer shuts off

    Hello,
I've inherited a Toshiba 32RV635D. I have a linux-based PVR (Mythtv) hooked up to the TV via HDMI, plugged into a Nvidia GT610.
With my previous TV, a cheap Vistron LCD panel, it would go into standby when the PC hibernated, and would power-on when the PC came back on.
This required no configuration from me, it just did it. The Toshiba TV doesn't.
With this Toshiba TV, when the PVR powers down the TV screen goes blank but is actually still on - the power led remains green.
Same with the other way round - if I put the TV in standby and power-up the PVR, the TV doesn't respond and I have to manually bring it out of standby.
I've updated the firmware and this hasn't changed anything, and I also can't find anything related to power management within the TVs menus. I've even tried just pulling the HDMI cable from the back of the TV so it has no physical active inputs, and it still doesn't drop to standby.
The Amazon page for the TV mentions power management features, and from what I understand it should behave in the way I was expecting it to.
I've read a lot about HDMI-CEC, but to use this with my existing kit I would need to buy a USB-CEC adapter, and that seems a bit odd seeing as my previous cheap-as-chips TV just did this...
Also, the various utilities within linux would suggest it thinks its making the right noises - running 'xset q' when the computer is idle tells me that 'Monitor is off' when actually it's not.
    Any clues?

Ricklous, it may be helpful if you have a look at the url
    http://www.toshiba-om.net/LCD/PDF/English/Country_Specific/RV635-323742-English-Specific.pdf
if you wish to download the English edition owners manual for your model, I have not read it through, but it may prove helpful to you.
Incidentally, I have the model 32RL900A, and find that a PVR plugged into the SCART socket claims the screen whenever it turns on while the TV is tuned to a FTA (Free To Air) channel, and then "hands back" the screen when it (the PVR) switches off, and this, I found out, is a characteristic of the SCART system.
I don't know if this information is useful to you, but hope it helps.

  • USB external HD does not turn off after system shut down

This is not a new issue in Leopard. I had this issue also in Tiger but I never bothered to ask whether there may be a solution to this issue.
I have firewire as well as USB HDs attached to my iMac. If I put my computer to sleep both the firewire and the USB HDs turn themselves off. The HDs come back to live after I reawake the Mac. But if I turn off the iMac then only the firewire HDs turn themselves off. The USB HDs remain turned on.
Is there a setting somewhere that can be changed so that the USB external HDs turn themselves off after system shut down?

Since the issue is not a Leopard issue, and maybe not even a Tiger issue, you might check with the drive manufacturer for some assistance.
Does the drive turn off when you eject it and then pull out the USB plug? That's important.

  • Does not start, but when I shut down the computer then the browser shows up right before sytem shuts down.

I am having problems with Firefox. When I click on the shortcut, or the .exe file nothing happens. I check task manager to see if it is running and it does not show Firefox is running.
But when I shut down the computer then the browser shows up right before the computer shuts down. I have tried starting the browser in safe mode and the same thing happens. I cannot give any troubleshooting info because the browser is not visible for me to click on help or any other button.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox and any leftover program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps one by one:
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu) and confirm all upcoming messages.
#Now, uninstall Firefox by following the steps mentioned in the [[Uninstall Firefox from your computer#w_uninstall-firefox|Uninstall Firefox]] article.
'''IMPORTANT:''' On Windows, the uninstaller has the option to remove your personal data and settings. Make sure that you do '''not''' check this option; otherwise all of your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, user customizations and other Firefox [[Profiles|user profile data]] will be removed from your computer.
After uninstalling Firefox on Windows, delete the "Mozilla Firefox" program folder, located by default in one of these locations:
    * '''(On 32-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox''
    * '''(On 64-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox''
#Go to the Windows Start menu and click on "Computer".
#In the Explorer window that opens, double click Local Disk (C:) to open the C:\ drive.
#Find the "Program Files (x86)" folder or "Program Files" folder.
#* On 32-bit Windows, double-click the '''Program Files''' folder to open it.
#* On 64-bit Windows, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder AND a "Program Files" folder. Open the '''Program Files (x86)''' folder.
#Look for a '''Mozilla Firefox''' folder. If you find one, right-click it and select ''Delete'' and confirm that you want to move the folder to the Recycle Bin.
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
#Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
#Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • IMac does not like being connected and shuts down

A white 17-inch iMac belonging to relatives of mine has started to behave rather oddly. In particular it does not seem to like to be connected to anything. Once when set to run in Fire Wire–hard drive mode it had just shut down and restarted itself in normal mode. And now when I try to start it with an Ethernet cable connected it just turns black shortly after the start signal. If the cable is removed it starts as it should (most of the time anyway – sometimes I have had to pull the power plug for a while or do a PRAM reset).
In addition, once when I pressed the switch on the back to start it up there were repeated soughing sounds, as if it tried to start over and over again. When the power plug had been removed and reconnected the Imac started directly, without the switch being pressed.
Finally, once when I tried to wake it up from sleep mode it shut down too. What is wrong with it?

So, I tried the old ADSL modem and router again, and now the iMac seems to work fine and connects to the Internet without problems. (The reason this equipment was exchanged in the first place, some month or two ago, was that somebody felt that new technology should be used, something by means of which your telephone calls too are transmitted over the Internet. Well, obviously it did not work, at least not with this piece of junk that Telia (our previously national Swedish telephone company) sent.)
Now the only thing is that although the iMac seems to work fine obviously some damage has been done to it, since for example it shut down from target disk mode (without any Ethernet cable being attached). I do not really know how to address that.

  • Windows 7 does not power off properly with bitlocker enabled

    Hi
I've got an X200T and installed W7 Enterprise. Things are mostly working fine but i ran into a problem with bitlocker.
When shutting down, the shutdown process but does not power off my laptop battery: bluetooth light stays on, fan stays on, hardrive stay on.
the funny thing is if i force the complete shutdown by pressing the ON/OFF button for several seconds, the next startup run smoothly, the system does not detect any wrong shutdown.
i found a threat relative to this problem elsewhere but nothing on this forum.
i'm wondering if any of yours are able to run W7 enterprise 32bits + X200T + bitlocker without any problem
    Let me know
    cheers

    Hi,
I can not tell you about a correlation between your problem and Bitlocker, but what I can tell is that I also have this issue (from time to time - my system is seldom shut down ^^) on my machine, which is a T400, without using Bitlocker. So maybe this is a BIOS defect, as I don't remember this happening before BIOS version 3.
OSs under which this happened are Vista x64 and Win7 x64.
    Greetz!

  • Imac does not turn off.

    hello,
I have an imac, running on os x lion. u know how, when you click on shutdown, it shows the white screen. sometimes my imac does not turn off and keep showing it. could you please tell me what i can do to solve this problem.
    thanks

The safe boot more or less resets system files.
When it is something in the hardware:
1.do the Pram and the SMC resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    2. shutdown the mac and startup while holding the ALT(option) key: choose the Recovery Disk, from the window choose Disk Utility, select the Lion disk, choose "repair disk".
When it is not a hardware problem:
    3. List the applications you installed in the last 6 months, also the ones from the Appstore.
    4. List the plugins (extensions) you have in Safari.

  • [SOLVED (Arch is a great community)] Thinkpad x220 does not power off

My thinkpad x220 does not power off, it goes through the whole shutdown process as expected until reaching the last step where it displays "> POWER OFF" and just sits there until the battery is empty or I force the power off by using the power button.
I don't know what's wrong or where to start looking for clues.
The same happens when rebooting, it displays "> REBOOTING" and sits there.
Occasionally on reboot attempts I have additional messages from iwlwifi:
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Queue 9 stuck for 10000 ms.
    iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Current read_ptr 28 write_ptr 29
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: On demand firmware reload
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Could not load the INST uCode section
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Failed to start RT ucode: -110
iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Unable to initialize device
    -edit-
Not sure if this could be related but my thinkpad has the particularity of having a renice x3 mSATA SSD that I installed myself.

This is what you're looking for : https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33872
I've had this issue before, also on my X220. The solution was to remove the e1000e driver before shutdown. I've placed a command that does something like "rmmod e1000e" in a configuration file that runs it on shutdown, and it fixed the problem. I forget where this file is though... Hopefully someone else can fill the gap =]

  • My imac does not turn off !

My imac does not turn off ! Since i bought the imac ( february ) i had this issue
I have called aplle support and During 2 months nothing changed ! I rebbot, i cleaned the cache i mean this
Is the way apple slove issue. ? My imac does not turn off ! I have to turn it off by myself ! ( hold the power button )
    Everytime !
They told me " this is because of the app you are using !" come i have adobe master cs6 and i told them
It was before i install these apps.
I would like some help ! And suggestions. I will return my imac and hope to have the new one because
Since i bought i can not enjoy the Apple product.
    Thank you

Have you done the safe boot mentioned above?
Can you click on the apple on the left of the menu bar? Did you try Paul_31's advice to choose force quit to see if there are any applications that are not responding?
I tend to agree that it may be time to take it to an Apple service center for hands-on attention.
Apple normally doesn't replace a machine with a new one unless they have been unable to repair an issues(s) after several tries.

  • [Solved] System does not power off, hangs at "System Halted"

Not sure if this is systemd or kernel related, and after the recent round of upgrades it happens on one of my computers and not the other.
I'm using systemd and do have systemd-sysvcompat installed, but no daemons are started with initscripts.
When I power off from the KDE desktop using the poweroff icon in the tray, it gets to the point where it says "System Halted" on the console screen
but the computer does not power off. If I power off using the physical power button on the computer, exactly the same thing happens.
However, if I power off using "sudo systemctl start poweroff.target" it works perfectly.
How can I get it to work properly again in KDE or if I hit the power button? Why does it work perfectly on one computer but not the other?

Okay, this has now been solved. Thanks are due to bgc1954 and Trillby for pointing me in the right direction. Very much appreciated.
My search ability, usually very good, completely failed me on this one. However, a few hints was all I needed.
    For the record:
To make the power button poweroff instead of halt: edit /etc/systemd/logind.conf and uncomment HandlePowerKey and make sure its value is set to poweroff.
To make kde poweroff properly, edit /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc and look for the [Shutdown] section. Ensure HaltCmd is uncommented and set to /sbin/poweroff.
As to why the behaviour was different on my other computer, for some reason the relevant kdmrc entry on that computer was commented out. Apparently that makes it work correctly. I don't know why they were different, as I don't recall changing either.

  • Screen/Computer does not Power Up when life the Display from being Closed

Sometimes (not always), when i come back to my MacBook Pro and open the display after it has been closed for a bit, the screen and computer does not power back up or anything. If you look at the screen there is a very FAINT image on the screen of whatever was open when the screen was closed, but you can't do anything, nothing is responsive, etc. I have to hold down the power button until it turns off, and then right before it turns off the screen will power up for one second and then shuts off. Any ideas?

I am having a similar issue when transitioning from my external display via the Mini Display to DVI adapter back to the internal LCD. The screen will go black, the machine will not sleep if I close the lid, and none of they key commands appear to work. The only response I can get is the caps lock key will turn off and on. When I restart the machine, I get no details on a Kernel Panic, or anything else, so wondering if it has something to do with the video drivers.

  • Sound does not turn off when switching between AppTabs, ie Pnadora to other radio stations

I have several radio stations (Pandora, NPR, etc) as Apps Tabs, but the sound does not turn off from one when switching to another.

Thank you. This is precisely the type of solution I was looking for.
My home network is set up with a single router that assigns DHCP addresses and does the NAT to the internet. This router does not have wireless. Its location is too out of the way (given where Comcast brought the line in) to be any good at wireless broadcast. So I installed two access points on the wired network.
I had vaguely known something about using the same SSID on the multiple base stations but I had also heard of difficulties a university reported having some years ago.
In any case I made the switch and it works great. I get full bars on the icon on the menu bar as I walk around the house. Exactly what I was looking for and no manual intervention once I set it up.
    Thank you.

If you don't have a gust account then create new account and try doing a shut down from there.

  • The alarm (as of iOS 7.0.2) does not go off when in vibrate mode

I have recently upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.0.2, and when the phone is in vibrate mode the alarms do not sound.  Instead the phone just vibrates which does not help.
The point is to silence the phone for the night, as I don't want to hear incoming calls and texts, but I do expect the alarm to go off with sound in the morning.  The alarm becomes completely useless otherwise.
Has anyone else experienced this, and is there some hidden new setting I'm unaware of to control this new behavior?

My alarm still sounds even if the phone is on mute. Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?
Until you get the issue resolved, have you tried using Do Not Disturb instead of putting the phone on mute? The alarm should sound when DND is set.
    Best of luck.
