IMac doesn't do scheduled shut down

It's been getting hot here in the afternoons, and last week I came home from work and found my Al iMac 20" shut down. It was very hot in here, even after 8pm, so I figured it probably overheated and shut itself down.
I've heard of overheating problems with Al iMacs, so I decided to schedule it to automatically shut down every weekday morning at 7:15, just after I go to work. This morning was the first weekday morning since I set it. When I got home at 5, it was sleeping, but not shut down. I checked to verify the settings, and it is properly set. The system clock is also correct. Is there some trick to get it to shut down?

I have the same problem. But if i change international settings from swedish to english the scheduled shut down settings i made in swedish shows as scheduled sleep in english. So if i turn to scheduled sleep the computer shut down instead. Weird!!! Maybe you can try to choose sleep instead of shut down or try to do the setting in the root account.

  • Schedule shut down is at radom time

    Hi
I have set-up a schedule to shut down at 3am. it works some times, but most of the time it doesn't as I wake-up and the PB is on, and them like today at 10am or so, the schedule shut down quicks in prompting me?
My tab isn't locked, as mentioned in other post.
Not a big issue, but that means something is wrong somewhere, and my PB lack some sleep as well.
    Thank you in advance

Lots of questions. I'll try to get to at least a few now.
I am doing the repairs on HD volume rather than the 74.4gb Hitachy, never been sure which one to choose)
When working in Disk Utility, both for Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions, you want to select the Manufacturer's ID, instead of the volumne name. You want to work with the volume on the HDD, as the directory is built into the HDD.
Would you say that I should consider the idefrag solution to keep things running smoothly?
Here's what Apple says About disk optimization with Mac OS X. That said, I do a complete disk optimization at least monthly, sometimes twice. I use Tech Tool Pro. It's one of the best all round utilities out there. DriveGenius is supposed to be pretty good, too, but I am not personally familiar with it. It is the one utility that I have heard reported to do repartitioning on the fly successfully.
I'll return to you other questions later.
    Good luck.

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Ipad doesn't start or shut down.

From one second to another my new iPad2 (1 months old) doesn't  start or shut down anymore. The only visible activity is a small round circle on the screen. When connected, my PV recognizes the device, on the pad itself, however nothing seems to change. I even tried to reset my iPad and the corresponding synchrosations with iTunes seemed to work. Hoewever, after unplugging it from the PC, everything is as it was before - just the circle on the screen and from time to time a beep tone. It goes without saying that i didn't make any changes on the set up of the device. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

    Donmiguel98-
In case your battery is just low, connect the iPad to its wall charger for at least half an hour to be sure there is enough juice to get started.
Did you try connecting the iPad to your computer, running iTunes and clicking on Restore?
If you did and it didn't make any difference, you may have a defective iPad.  If you show it to an Apple Store Genius, you may get a new one on the spot.
If it is not convenient to go to an Apple Store, search for a Apple Authorized Repair Station near you.  There may be one in your city.  Your iPad appears to be under warranty, so they should either repair or replace it.

I work for at a video production studio and we often have to leave the computers on over night to transcode, render or export.
Is it possible for running programs such as final cut pro, compressor, and dvd studio pro to auto save when closing during scheduled automatic shut down?

Sounds to me like scheduled shut down in your environment is not ideal. Why not just let the machines remain on? They'll go to sleep normally (unless you've disabled that) once all activity is done, and sleep mode uses very little power.

  • I have Imac, and I can't shut down it at all

I have Imac, and I can't shut down it at all

If you've already chosen Shut Down from the Apple menu and it's hanging there indefinitely, press and hold the power button until it shuts off.

  • Schedule shut down

I keep setting my settings for my computer to shut down at 10:45PM and wake up at 4am. It never does it, every time I get up in the morning before 4am, the computer is still running. I've checked to make sure I wanted it to shut down and not sleep, every thing checks out, it just won't shut down unless I manually shut it down myself.

    Hit there,
One thing that may be preventing the automatic shutdown is that the computer is asleep at the scheduled time. The article below has more information.
Computer must be awake for scheduled shut down to occur in Mac OS X

  • IMac G5 iSight won't shut down, won't install updates

    Hi all,
My iMac G5 (iSight) is giving me some grief.
    First, some details:
    OSX 10.5.7
I have been trying to update this machine and have successfully updated a few things, such as iTunes, iLife, etc. Updates that don't require a restart seem to go just fine. I am unable to install updates to QT7, Safari because the installer hangs up while "Configuring Installation" and won't go any further, no matter how long you leave it.
This iMac also will not shut down. The finder icons disappear, the desktop image remains, and the grey spinning wheel goes on and it will simply not shut down until forced using the power button.
It is starting and functioning otherwise with no problems.
I have disconnected it from drives and and the network in case there was something on the network keeping it, but no luck. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and the SMU, as well. No joy. Incidentally, my partner's MacBook Air is also having the exact same problem as this iMac (I posted as well in the MBA forums), but my own laptop, the one I'm using now (details below) is having no problem at all and all updates have taken.
Has anyone any suggestions about anything else I can try to clear this issue before I ring Applecare tomorrow?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Miriam,
I've just tried to run a Hardware Test but the disk is clearly from an older iMac I once had (pre-iSight) because it doesn't want to know about it. I have doubts about it being a logic board problem, however, because I'm having the same problems with a MacBook Air (but not my MacBook Pro) and it only started after a recent round of updates. Worrying, yes, but apart from not installing updates that require a restart or simply shutting down both machines seem to be performing perfectly. It's a bit confusing.
    Thanks!

I've run Onyx, Cocktail & MacCleanse with minimal success... fails a little less frequently for a brief period.
I'm fairly conversant with computers but I'm either missing something simple or I'm way out of my depth.
I've got no ego about this and would appreciate any advice.
    Thanks

I'm not real good with the log messages, but I would try a few things.
    1. RAM
        a. Check to make sure that all the modules are firmly seated in the slots.
        b. What RAM was used, recheck the spec's?
        c. Reinstall the original RAM modules.
    2. USB and FireWire devices
        a. Disconnect all of your USB and FireWire devices and see if it will startup normally.
        b. If so, then slowly start adding the devices back on one at a time and test each device.
    3. Checking and/or removing some third party software and drivers

  • IMacs almost always refuse to shut down

    Hi,
I have at home 2 iMacs and a MacBookPro, all running the latest OS.
My 2 imacs have big trouble shutting down. Sometimes they do, but mostly they don't.
Especially the most recent one (ALU) causes problems.
I shut down, nothing really happens and after a while i get the message (for instance) "iCal refuses to shut down", while iCal wasn't even running anymore. I click ok, re-shut down, and after a while he tells me it's iTunes that refuses to shut down. Same thing, iTunes wasn't even running.
This is driving me crazy... my iMac hasn't shut down normally for more than a week now...

They're connected to the same router which never shuts down. There was never a problem before with this.
Both of them have a seperate LaCie disk that i use as a backup with time machine.
I don't know what NAS is. There's no central location for iTunes or iCal. The errors can mention other programs as well (excel, ...).
I do have two MobileMe accounts (family and workrelated).

  • IMac won't restart nor shut down

    Hello,
I purchased a new iMac about three months ago and, since receiving it, I notice that it will not usually shut down or restart.  It gets as far as the spinning/rotating pinwheel (not the rainbow colored one) and just hangs up there.  I've let it sit there for as long as 25 minutes...it just stays stuck there and the only way out is to press and hold the power button down to force a shutdown.  And this happens whether I'm restarting or shutting down.
Mine is a 21.5 inch iMac running Yosemite (currently 10.10.2)
    2.7 Ghz Intel Core i5
    16 GB RAM
I'm not very sophisticated with the internal hardware, so I'm not sure what other information would be helpful to list.
Does anyone know how to remedy this problem?  Or do I have to take the computer back? (Hoping to avoid the latter)
    Thanks
    Chris

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Disconnect all peripherals, (unmount any firewire devices before disconnecting) just your Apple keyboard and mouse and test.
If it is not a peripheral check in /startup items. OS X installs no items to that file by default, so anything there is yours. Also check System Preferences>> accounts >>login items and deselct them.

  • IMac Won't Restart ou Shut Down

    Hello,
    I have an iMac 3.1GHz Intel Core i5 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (OS X 10.9.1)
Suddenly the Restar, Shut Down and Log Out buttons don't work anymore.
The Sleep button is working fine.
    Disk Utility found no errors.
I've already restart using the power button.
But it didn't came back normal.
    Also in safe mode.
    But didn't work either.
I reinstall the Maverick, but nothing.
    Does anybady have a clue?
    Thanks

Found a simple solution that I think will help a lot of people with this problem.
    Go to Lybrary/Prefernces/
    Delete the file "com.apple.loginwindow.plist".
(Don't worry, it will creat a fresh new as soon as you star your machine again)
Now restart your computer, with the power button if needed.
Now everything is back to normal.

  • My iMac won't restart or shut down. What can I do?

I closed all my programs and windows and clicked on "RESTART" but it just hangs after my desktop icons/dock/etc have disappeared. I can still see my wallpaper, and I get the rainbow timer wheel spinning round, but it just sits there. I've left it for like 3 hours, no change.
Last time I had this issue, I force quit by pressing the shut down button, and that was not the best idea, because after that my mac won't start up at all and had to take it to a local Mac store so they would help me with this. They said that a program was corrupted ...
I don't want this to happen again, so I was wondering what can I do??

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

  • Scheduling shut down & start up

I have a Mac Mini G4 that will no longer shut down or start up as scheduled. Any ideas about why this feature would stop working? Thanks!

    chizzle03-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Generally an external device will cause sleeping problems. Have you added an eyeTV or any device like that?
The first step would be to disconnect all peripherals except the keyboard and monitor and see if the problem goes away. If so, add devices back one at a time until you find the offending unit.
    Luck-
