IMAC doesn't recognize my Canon GL2 camcorder any longer ?

I am using a 24 inch Imac with a processor 2.16GHZ intel core 2 Duo running Tiger 10.4.10.
I am using Final Cut Pro version 5.1.4
Up to the present time I've been able to use my Canon GL2 Camcorder for downloading. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my Imac doesn't boot up properly when I have the Canon turned on. My 3 external drives don't show up on my desk top unless I turn off the Canon camcorder. Obviously, when I launch Final Cut Pro and attempt to log and capture, the viewer comes up with the message, "No Communication" Interestingly enough, when I connect my Panasonic DVX 100B camcorder to my Imac,it works perfectly for downloading. In addition, I have the exact same Imac in a 20 inch screen running the exact same operating system and exact same version of FCP. My Canon GL2 works perfect on this Imac. Can anyone help me solve this problem. I would be forever grateful.
Henri

Did you have other devices connected to your old iMac while capturing? If not that's why it was working.
One of my cameras is a Canon and besides MacPro and MBP I have also an old iMac. It never worked with external drives connected for the very reason I explained in the link I sent to you.
Canon FW cameras are just likely to mess up with other FW connections on the same FW bus.
Best,
G.

If you are new to FCP X it may be that you are doing something wrong but unless you give precise details of every move we will have no idea what that may be.

  • FCX won't recognize attached Canon GL2 while FW800 HDD is connected

Heres the problem. I have a Lacie external HDD attached to my PowerBook G4 via Firewire 800 when I connect my Canon GL2 to the Firewire 400 port either on the Lacie HDD or PowerBook and start FCX FCX will not recognize the Canon GL2 as being attached.
I want to be able to capture video to the external HDD instead of my internal HDD due to space issues.
Also when I disconnect the etxernal HDD FCX recognizes the Canon GL2 immediately.
Why doesn't FCX see the Canon GL2 when the external HDD is connected?
    I am running 10.4.9 with FCX 3.0.
    PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.9)

LaCie does not support the use of their drives with Canon cameras as long as they are both on the same bus because of the FireWire protocol used by that manufacturer. Macs only have one FireWire bus, though they may have multiple ports. Using your PowerBook you can add a second FireWire bus putting on into to your cardbus slot. This will give you two separate buses and the computer will be able to address the devices separately.

  • The iMac doesn't recognize my external hard disk

My iMac doesn't recognize my external hard disk. The iMac also keeps a DVD inside. It doen't throw it out despite "eject".

Sounds like you might need to make that call. In the meantime here are a few of things you could try that may help:
To eject the disk try a restart holding down the mouse button - hopefully it'll eject.
If you are running either Mountain Lion (10.8) or Lion (10.7) try booting into the Recovery HD:
Restart holding down Command+r. At the screen with 4 choices choose Disk Utility and then select Macintosh HD and click on repair disk. If it fixes anything click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you are running an earlier OS you would normally carry out this process by putting the grey restore disk that came with your Mac in the Disk drive and restarting holding down the C key. Choose your language and at the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility and then follow the above instructions (I realise you won't be able to do this if you have a disk stuck in the optical disk drive).
Try an SMC and PRAM reset: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
Try a Safe Boot: Restart holding down the shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once it's booted restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If none of this helps, I guess you need to make that call. Good luck.

  • New imac doesn't recognize firewire 400

Just got the new imac and transferred all data from my old (non-intel) imac using a firewire 400-to-800 adapter.
Now, my new imac doesn't recognize my external (400 firewire) drives anymore. One of the drives has an USB which works with the new mac but transfers are very vey slow. The other drive has only firewire 400 and doesn't get recognized at all.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks.

Adapters can be troublesome, I'd recommend replacing with a Firewire 400 to 800 cable like this one. You can normally find these at your local computer store, Radio Shack or of course Amazon.

  • IPhoto doesn't recognize my canon after update to Yosemite

iPhoto doesn't recognize my Canon any more after my update to Yosemite

Have you run Software Update since installing Snow Leopard?
If so and all available updates have been installed, try re-downloading the current iTunes version and re-install it over the existing. No need to delete iTunes first.

  • Can't burn data to a CD because iMac doesn't recognize CD has been inserted.  Also, can't eject.  What to do?

Can't burn data to a CD because iMac doesn't recognize that a CD has been inserted.  Also, it won't let me eject the disk. How do I get my iMac to let me burn the data to the CD and eject the disk?
Finder currently has 2 "Untitled CD"s listed in it.  One has been in there for months (without a CD inserted into the machine).  I have tried several times unsuccessfully to remove the item from finder.

Please reset the SMC and PRAM 2-3 times each using the instructions in https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603.  Then attempt to eject. If that fails please use one of Kappy's ideas:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • IMovie doesn't recognize my Panasonic v100M camcorder

iMovie 11 doesn't recognize my Panasonic v100M camcorder. I've done all the steps on another support page (unplugged, plugged it back in, restarted, etc) and nothing.  I even changed the internal video capture setting to iFrame and iMovie (nor does my Macbook Pro) recognize the camera.  HOWEVER, if I save the video to a SanDisck, and plug it in with an adapter, it sees it.  Go figure.  I'm lost here and frustrated because Apple lists this as one of the camera's it's OS is compatable with. Any help, suggestions are more than welcomed.

    Hey Brett...
Thank you for the link.  I ended up calling Apple that evening. Found out the camera was supported in iMovie '09, but not '11. Go figure. lol. So I reinstalled '09, but haven't checked it yet to see if it was working. They gave me a case number just in case, so we'll see.  :-)
Totally appreciate the response!  I'll let you know how it goes.

  • My computer using Windows 8 doesn't recognize my Canon Rebel. How do I fix this?

My computer using Windows 8 doesn't recognize my Canon Rebel. How do I fix this?

    Hi MWCRILLY,
To connect your camera to a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer or Windows 8 computer, you'll need to change your camera's "Communication" mode.
To set your camera up for this, please do the following:
With the camera disconnected from the computer, turn the camera on.  Press the "Menu" button.  Now select the [Wrench, Hammer, 2] tab.  Scroll down to "Communication" and press the "Set" button.
Select the [Print/PTP] and press "Set".  This process is more completely described (and illustrated too!) on page 121 of your Digital Rebel XT instruction manual.
Now connect your camera to your computer and turn the camera on.  Your computer should now recognize and have access to your Digital Rebel XT.
Unfortunately, Canon software cannot communicate with the Rebel XT when operating in this mode.
You may download your pictures using Windows Photo Gallery.  If you haven't already done so, you may retrieve and install this program from Microsoft's download.live.com.

  • My imac doesn't recognize my backup drive anymore, what can i do?

My Imac doesn't recognize my backup drive anymore, what can i do?

Unfortunately, that usually means the drive has died although it doesn't mean some other hardware failure or even software failure (in some cases.)
I think the wise thing to do is take it in for service.

  • Mac doesn't recognize external HD anymore. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Everyone. Suddenly, my MAC mini doesn't recognize my external hard drive any more. It was fine for years and today it's not "there".
I tried connecting with different fire wire cables and still, same problem.
I also tried connecting the external HD to my iMac and still, doesn't recognize it.
I tried restarting many times, still, same problem.
I tried disconnecting all cables and power cords, reconnecting them and powering on, and that didn't resolve it.
I have been searching the web all morning for ideas and can't seem to find a solution.
The external HD is a Maxtor III 300 GB. Older one but was big enough for my needs.
I was reading that sometimes doing a software update might cause an issue with external HDs. I just don't know how to resolve that if it is.
This hard drive is formatted for the Mac.
According to Maxtor I do not need to update my drivers. I was thinking that maybe one got lost.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    Christine

If only the mini couldn't read it, that would lead down one path. However, if both the mini and the iMac can't read it, that sort of points to an issue with the drive. Do you hear the drive power up? If you have an external power supply have you tried that or do you use that with it?
It's possible that the hard drive is in fine condition, and it's the case electronics that are acting up. You should be able to pull the hard drive out of the Maxtor case and put it into another external case, to read the hard drive, assuming the drive itself is OK.

  • IMovie 11 doesn't recognize my canon Legria HF m31 anymore (iMac 2009 ; macOS X 10,7,3)

any help more then welcome !
Although it did work some weeks ago, importing from a Canon camcorder Legria HF m31 (PAL ; Europe) doesn't work anymore ! iMac doesn't even recognize the camcorder...

Personnaly, I have downloaded a Panasonic plugin (free) that allows iMovie '11 to import the .MTS files directly.
But I also tried "handbrake" that does marvel at converting video files in many formats.
Unfortunately, my Camera is not recognised in iMovie '11 in the list of connected devices.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Importing from a Canon GL2 Camcorder

This problem did not exist with previous versions of iMovie, but it is ubiquituous now. Here's what happens: 1) the camera is connected via Firewire and then turned on; 2) iMovie is then started, and the button is moved from the scissor icon to the camera icon; 3) and this is where the problems begin . . . and they are one of several: 1) the screen turns blue and says Camera Connected. It will then flicker to Camera Ready to Record, then back to Camera Connected, then the screen goes to black, and then it will not import. After 90 minutes with Apple support working with disconnecting peripherals, etc., a work-around was suggested . . . press play on the camera, then press Import on the screen. Tried this, and it started importing, but then the screen would turn blue and Camera Playing term would show intermittently, causing drop-puts in the replayed clips. Apple Support also suggested that it may be that iMovie cannot control the Canon GL2, but I never had this problem in previous iMovie versions. Anybody having similar issues?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi B
May be You find some help in my list:
    Mac:
    - hardware
◊ Slow hard disk (fragmented: repair permissions, repair hard disk, use a faster hard disk)
◊ Disconnect all other ext devices (FW and USB) exept Camera (and keyboard + mouse) and try again
    ◊ Reset PRAM
    ◊ Bad RAM-chips
◊ disconnect Mac from powerline (not just switch off, really plug out) for a few minutes to reset FW ports
    - software
◊ File-Vault is on - turn it off
◊ Something is occupying the CPU/System, like other programs, Internet etc.
◊ Do You have desktop pictures or screen or energy-savers active? Try turning them off.
◊ Updating - OS has to be a clean install - not an update eg from X.3.x to X.4.x (no good) OS X.4.0-5 needs a clean install to work (I use X.3.9)
◊ Updating QT and/or other updates (to 7 needs v6 to be cleaned out first) QT v.7.0.0-4 needs a clean install to work (I use 6.5.2)
◊ Have you tried the crazy fix: Open GarageBand, play a few notes, close it and reopen iMovie. The camera should import fine now. Sue/SDillini
◊ Running iDVD at the same time as iMovie can cause problems: (Lennart Thelander)
◊ If You also have installed FinalCut Express/pro there are possibly problems with this
    iMovie:
◊ remove bookmarks in iMovie project
    ◊ Trash: com.apple.iMovie.plist and com.apple.iMovie3.plist : files (Xinram)
    Connection:
◊ don’t Daisy chain Camcorder <--> external hard disk <--> Mac
◊ FW-wire cable, is it OK?
    ◊ USB/USB2 is NO GO !
    Camera:
◊ The Camera is set to VTR ? (not as when You ”film” record with it)
◊ You may be need to go to the Camera menu and select digital out.
◊ defective camera TRY IT ON ANOTHER MAC ! (if the A/D chip in the camera is harmed then it will say in iMovie that the camera is connected and You can forward rep. backward the tape but there will be no picture or sound just the blue screen).
◊ Cheque the menu on Your Camera so that it communicates with the FW digitally to Your Mac
◊ Date and Time is correct on Your Camera ?
    Tape:
◊ Drop outs on the miniDV-tape - make a camera to camera copy on a tape which You have previous recorded with a time code (dummy recording).
◊ Break in the time-code on the miniDV tape (make a camera to camera copy on a tape which is pre-recorded with nothing/anything so that the tape has a time-code from beginning to the end)
◊ If You recorded in LP-mode (90 min on a standard 60 min tape with 12-bit sound). Try to change in iMovie pref. to import but not as individual clips. If this doesn’t work You have to make a Camera to Camera copy with the receiving Camera set to SP-mode and 16-bit sound.
    More:
    ◊ follow advises here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43000

  • IMac doesn't recognize input devices after going to asleep, must reboot

Quite often, my iMac doesn't respond when I attempt to "wake" it using keyboard or mouse. The only way to wake the iMac is to tap the power button. However, when it wakes the mouse cursor is a spinning color wheel and the system does not recognize any input from the keyboard or mouse. I can leave it sitting for quite some time and it still will not recognize my input devices. When this happens I must hold the power button to reboot.
This has been happening for a quite a while now, and it is highly annoying. I can't remember if this was happening before my screen was replaced by Apple a few months ago. It definitely did not happen before upgrading to Lion.
I am hoping you guys can help, otherwise I suppose I will be calling Apple and see if they can figure it out. I am tired of this!
    Thanks,
    Robyn

I'm having a similar issue. I put my screen to sleep before I go to bed, next day, the computer is frozen, but still on since I can detect heat from the top vent.
I've checked memory for any errors (5 hours of testing) and removed any system extensions. Still gets frozen.
I did attach an old USB mouse just to wake it up when it loses connection to the wirless bluetooth devices. I've been able to wake it up from this condition a few times.
I will keep investigating. My iMac is 1 month old, 27" i5 quad core.

  • I moved to Mavericks and now my imac doesn´t recognize my Seagate Goflex external drive.

why my imac does not recognize my Seagate  Freeagent goflex after upgrading to Mavericks?

Luke 1248 First welcome to the discussions.
If the Toshiba worked before the upgrade it will work again.
First thing I would do is Unplug it the go to your Black Apple and make sure that your Software is UP TO DATE.
Restart your computer and then Plug in the Toshiba again and see what you have.  If it still doesn't work Go to Toshiba's Web Site and see if they offer a New Driver for there Product. I hate to say this but Apple sent the Maverickks Operating System to All of the SoftwareDevelopers to make sure there product worked with the different periphrials and softwares.
Some are a lot faster at responding then others, and naturally all users try to blame Apple on there products or Software not working.  The fact of the matter is it is those that have made the software and different periprials who are to blame for sitting on there hands.
Come back and tell me if this worked for you.
    Cheers
    Don
