IMac doesn't respond

I have had trouble the past few weeks getting a response from my iMac. I am running Mac OS X version 10.4.11. Twice, I returned to the screen after being away and the mouse and keyboard were unresponsive. I finally pressed the on/off switch in back - and the computer finally went through all the keyboard/mouse keystrokes I went through on the screen before finally turning off. When I turned the computer back on, it was fine.
This morning I returned to my computer after is was in sleep mode. The mouse and keyboard were unresponsive. Even the on/off switch did nothing. I thought my iMac had died. I finally tried unplugging and plugging the computer back in - when I turned it back on, everything was fine.
BYW - I am using a logitech wave keyboard and matching mouse.
Should I take my iMac into the shop for repair work?
Thanks
Scott T.

Hello tull:
By all means take the computer to the Apple store. The warranty is good for one year (three if you bought Applecare extended warranty).
When you get a chance, update your profile with both hardware and software information (the latest release of OS X is 10.5.2).

  • IMac doesn't recognize input devices after going to asleep, must reboot

Quite often, my iMac doesn't respond when I attempt to "wake" it using keyboard or mouse. The only way to wake the iMac is to tap the power button. However, when it wakes the mouse cursor is a spinning color wheel and the system does not recognize any input from the keyboard or mouse. I can leave it sitting for quite some time and it still will not recognize my input devices. When this happens I must hold the power button to reboot.
This has been happening for a quite a while now, and it is highly annoying. I can't remember if this was happening before my screen was replaced by Apple a few months ago. It definitely did not happen before upgrading to Lion.
I am hoping you guys can help, otherwise I suppose I will be calling Apple and see if they can figure it out. I am tired of this!
    Thanks,
    Robyn

I'm having a similar issue. I put my screen to sleep before I go to bed, next day, the computer is frozen, but still on since I can detect heat from the top vent.
I've checked memory for any errors (5 hours of testing) and removed any system extensions. Still gets frozen.
I did attach an old USB mouse just to wake it up when it loses connection to the wirless bluetooth devices. I've been able to wake it up from this condition a few times.
I will keep investigating. My iMac is 1 month old, 27" i5 quad core.

  • Screen ipad doesn't respond during video viewing home sharing with multiple iOS devices simultaneously

A have a problem with the videos app and iTunes home sharing on multiple iOS devices.
This is my setup. On my iMac 2006 with Snow Leopard I have:
    - 100+ dvd's ripped in my iTunes movie section
    - 600+ episodes ripped in iTunes TV-section in 35 TV-shows
    - 1 apple tv, 1 iPad 2, 1 iPad mini
On an average evening my family is watching different tv-shows simultaneously on the apple tv, the ipad, an iphone, and an ipad mini.
This is done through home sharing on the one iTunes library.
    All updated apps, software etc..
What happens on the ipads, after viewing for more than 10 minutes, the user interface doesn't show up when tapping the screen. The touchscreen doesn't respond, only the home button works. Clicking the home button closes the app, but the sound of the video keeps on playing. Opening up the videos app again gives a black screen with sound still playing and still no button or UI.
The only workaround which currently works is killing the videos app. Power off the ipad and power on again, reconnect to the shared library, wait until it has found all the content (1+ minutes) and startup the tv show again.
All in all, a nasty way to pause your viewing or switching to another movie of tv episode, or even wanting to finish viewing.
The problem has haunted me for a year now, patiently waiting and hoping software-updates would fix it. They didn't.
A fix would obviously hugely improve my user experience, getting it on par with Apples usual quality of service.
Anyone familiar with this problem? Apple: is it possible to fix it in an update?

Same here for over a year now.
You cant imagine how happy i am that im not the only one with this problem.
many of frinds have the same setup as me (ipad 2, 27"imac, express, apple tv 2)
    No problem
I had the problem on Snow Leopard, lion and now on mountain lion.
I'am also starting to get a new problem - sometimes when waching a movie on iPad or ATV it just quits the movie and you have to start it again
on the iPad most of the time it also shows the wrong cover art. I tried all the hints here, and i works for a day or two then its wrong again
I store my itunes library on an external drive - you ???

  • IMac won't respond after being put to sleep/turned off.

I've been dealing with this problem for a few months now. If I put my hard disk to sleep or turn my computer off, it doesn't respond when I try to wake it back up or turn it back on. It will make a continuous clicking noise (no there's no disc caught in it the CD drive) and the only way for me to actually restart is to run the Archive and Install feature on the install disc. If I try to simply restart it, I get a blue screen with a folder-with-a-question-mark icon where the Apple icon should be during loading. I've had to skip putting the hard disk to sleep at all but I do just put the display asleep, and it wakes up fine after that.
I've noticed a lot of crashes with Safari and other things like games recently too. I'm usually able to just force quit the program and restart it though. I have a Logitech mouse and an Apple USB keyboard that I use with it and I've tried unplugging and replugging those, as well as trying other keyboards/mice with it to see if it's a rare hardware issue. The only thing I haven't checked yet is the RAM that my boyfriend installed for me a couple years ago.
Although, I've noticed the last couple times I've had to do that, I've had to wait to use the install disc. If I do it too soon after it's stopped responding then my hard drive doesn't show up on the selection menu and the Archive and Install option doesn't come up. I have to let it sit a little while before I can do it.
I'm not at home at the moment to see which exact model/generation it is, but I have the one with the flatpanel screen and built-in iSight. I bought it back in June 2006. I'm currently using Leopard on it (not sure which version though).
Could one of my boards be worn out? Or could the additional RAM be causing problems? Any advice or suggestions are welcome. I'd like try checking everything I can myself before having to take it in to an Apple store. Thanks!

I bought it back in June 2006.
If it was purchased new, you are better off posting in another iMac forum. This is for the G4 iMacs with the articulated display arm and the dome-shaped base. It's not your fault--the forum labeling is, at best, non-intuitive and confuses plenty of posters.
Look at "About this Mac" in your Apple menu and note the processor type. If it says "G5" then your forum is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=134
If it says your processor is "Intel," then your forum is here:

  • IMac doesn't rspond to restart command

My iMac 1.25Ghz,768Mb,OS X 10.3.9 doesn' t respond at sleep, restart or shut down command.
I try disconnect any third party peripherical and reset the PRAM without better result.
I have try to restart from Disk Warrior, TT Pro CD and eDrive (installed) but can't

    Some things to try:
Check Activity Monitor and see what application may be running that refuses to quit and hence prevents OS X shutting down/restarting.
Inspect the Logs in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Console > Logs button > system.log. This contains details of start-up, sleep and shutdown; so see what events are or aren't happing around shutdown. Post a section here if it helps.
Under var/log/ you'll find system.log.1.gz, system.log.2.gz etc etc for older dated info.
If none of the above give any clues I would consider progressing to a reset of the Power Management Unit (read the article very carefully).

  • My mail program is running slow and doesn't respond to commands.

iMac with Yosemite loaded.  Mail program sometimes doesn't respond to commands and I get the spinning wheel constantly.  Other times it works fine.  Is there a way to reset the program?

  • Screen doesn't respond

The screen doesn't respond. I can't slide the bar to unlock it. I can't slide to power off. I've rebooted but the problem persists.
    Any suggestions?

I had somewhat of the same problem with my screen frezzing up on me where i was not allowed to do anything. all i did was leave the phone on until the battery drains out then reconnect the phone to ac outlet to recharge the battery. about 2 hours into the recharge i held both the sleep button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds and the phone reset it self and i did not lose any of my settings or data, hope this helps you.

Apple doesn't respond to crash or panic reports. They're for internal use only.
Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
    OpenVPN client
Driver for unknown USB network device
    BlackBerry Desktop Manager
If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can determine which is at fault. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.
Back up all data before making any changes.

  • My apple tv is registering on my tv - i can see it on my system info screen but the apple tv doesn't show up, as well my imac doesn't seem to let me share - so i don't know whats wrong, why my apple tv isn't working

anybody able to help me with my setup for apple tv.  i've followed the directions in the guide and my tv doesn't seem to register in part.  it's weird because my tv system info identifies the apple tv but the screen never went black and it doesn't show anything, too, my imac doesn't seem to register the apple tv unit either

I would try connecting it to another tv to see if it works there if it does
then likely your tv can't handle the default resolution and you should lower it on the other tv
if not then you should connect it by usb to the computer and use itunes to restore it's firmware

  • SAP Business One 8.8. Report doesn't show and workstation doesn't respond.

    Hi all,
    We have a customer with:
    SAP Business One 8.8 (8.80.237) PL: 19 HOTFIX1.
    Sql Server 2005
    Crystal Reports 12.1.3.1028
We have done some reports wich run under server machine but not under workstation.
Even i've done a dummy report without any data connection and it doesn't run under workstation (server machine works perfectly). This dummy report only show a label with static text "Hola".
We don't receive any error message, SAP Business One client doesn't respond and in task manager you can see "not responding" message.
SAP support connected to our customer installation and they suggested us formatting workstations computers. We did it but the problem persists. Thank you very much for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Nauzet Díaz

    Hi,
In this case, why you not responded to SAP for their suggestion of formatting the workstation?
If you unfortunately closed the old support ticket, then just raise a new support ticket with reference of the old one too.
    Regards,
    Bala

  • Lumia 900 doesn't respond while charging

Hi, so basically my AT&T Lumia 900 doesn't respond to my touch during charging. If I unplug the phone it responds fine, but when it's plugged in it can't pick up any of my touch commands. Even if I draw across the screen very slowly I get nothing. I live in New Zealand and we have 240v/50mA power sockets over here but the charger says that's within the range it's supposed to handle. Is this a hardware problem with my phone and how can I fix it?
The phone is running windows phone 7.5 (ver. 7.10.8779.8). Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I've only received the phone on Thursday and this is the second time charging it (I read somewhere that I should drain the battery completely the first few times to condition the battery, but after finding that some phones bricked themselves when the battery was completely empty I avoided it). In both cases the same thing seems to be happening however the first time was not as severe I feel and I attributed it to the screen protector thing (the "Talking and Driving it can wait" thing from AT&T already attached out of the box). When the phone is at 100% though I have no lag.

No, i don't. if i did i would have tried it. do you have to sign up an appled ID for iCloud? If the answer is yes then they should mention that in the set-up instructions.

  • My iMac doesn't recognise some photos on my Kingston camera card won't download on to my iMac

My iMac doesn't recognise some photos on my Kingston camera card but recigognises others. How can I get it to download the rest of my photos?

I'm using iPhoto. I have downloaded some off the same card but every now and then it refuses to recognise all of them. Can't figure out why as I perform the same action each time.

  • IMac doesn't detect the base station correctly (with new base station)

I have a brand new Airport Express. I'm trying to connect to my iMac G5. Everything works fine in the start up with getting the green light on the Express base station. But, my iMac doesn't "connect" with the base station.
I try the "Airport Setup Assistant" and get a window that says "No new Airport networks were found."
I look at the "pie" at the top of the iMac screen. It has the white and black stripes on it. I click it and find "Apple Network e3fec9" and select it. The signal level shown has all blue buttons. That window also reports "Status: Connected to 'Apple Network e3fec9'" and "Base Station ID:00:19:E3:E3:FE:C9". That's what makes me think that my problem must be in the iMac and not the base station.
I had also tried my Dell laptop (from work) and found that it found the internet network. It detected the "local host" and "Apple Network" and the signal strength was very good (~90% or so). The only problem was that the laptop thought it needed to recreate an IP address before it could connect to the internet. I didn't do that, since I saw it was detecting the network.
Please help. Why should this be so hard?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   none

I'm confused. You say you're connected to "Apple Network e3fec9", and you're having trouble connecting your iMac? It sounds like you've managed to connect to your Airport Base Station.
Have you configured the Internet settings for the base station? Try this:
    1. Launch Airport Admin Utility (in /Applications/Utilities/) select "Apple Network e3fec9" and click Configure.
    2. Under the Airport tab, give the base station a name, click the Base Station Options… button, and make sure Enable Ethernet Port is checked.
    3. Select Create a Wireless Network (Home Router) if it isn't already selected, give your network a name, and check Create a closed network
4.Click the Wireless Security button and set it to WPA Personal, and enter a password.
    5. Under the Internet tab, set Connect Using: to Ethernet, and in the Configure dropdown, select Using DHCP
    6. Click the Access Control tab and click the plus button on the right side of the window. In the panel that pops up, click the This Computer button.
    7. Click Update
I'm hoping it's something simple, like Enable Ethernet Port wasn't checked or something, and not something more serious.
    Hope it helps.
