IMac doesn't startup when new RAM is inserted

Hi all,
I'm trying to put in more RAM into my 17" iMac w/ OSX 10.4.10. I currently have 512 MB Ram, but want to install 2GB. I have tried several times to get the computer to start but no luck. I have replaced the original 512MB and am posting here with this configuration-so I know that the computer is recognizing it.
I have 2 new Kingston 1GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 notebook modules. I tried just one with the original 512MB configuration and it didn't start up. Anyone have any helpful ideas as to whats going on and how can I get the computer up and running with the new RAM??
Thanks,
Vincenso

Sounds like your new RAM chips are not inserted far enough.
I had a similar problem when I installed RAM in a MacBook. You just have to push those chips in a little harder so they are seated correctly.

  • Satellite L30 10Y doesn't boot with new RAM modules

    Hi,
just regged with this forum as I am having a memory upgrade problem.
I have read through a few of the memory problems on here and all users say its a comaptible memory issue. I had Hynix 512MB RAM in my laptop and I purchased 2 x 1GB of Hynix memory both of these are matching sticks to the installed memory but when I installed them my laptop wouldnt boot at all. It would only boot if I had one stick in at a time.
I tried switching top and btm ports and even when one stick was installed it says in XP, Vista and Windows 7 (yes I have tried all systems) 896MB available. I even tried using my other Hynix stick but it only booted and showed the highest stick of 1GB (896MB usable in Windows 7). After reading all the threads I'm just wondering if this is a hardware fault or is there a fix in the Toshiba world or perhaps in the Toshiba world the L series is nearly obselete and not worth the bother to help out the people who unwittingly bought thier merchandise.
I apologise for being a bit down on Toshiba but a laptop which states what it can run and doesnt a company should hold its hand up and say yes there is a fault and help deal with the problem.

You are seeing 896MB because the rest is reserved for the Graphics Card VRAM.
Sometimes RAM can simply be not compatible, due to timing incompatibilities or RAM chip/controller design differences.

  • HP Pavilion G6 Notebook PC - Continuously turns on and off after new ram is inserted repetitively

I have just installed another 4 gb of ram making it 8 gb. It works fine the first time it has started up with the new ram but when it has been turned off with the new ram installed for at least 30 minutes it just refuses the ram and just turns on and off repetitively. I have to take out the new ram and turn on the computer on to get it running again. Once it has had a full start up without the new ram I can insert the new ram again but then this problem consists.

  • Event triggered in Maintainence view when new record are inserted

    Hi Expert,
There is requirement , whenever i inserted a New Record through INSERT Command i.e. ABAP Statement NOT through Maintainence Generator, it should trigger a Event in maintainence Table for that table.
    How to achieve this?
    Regards,
    Kapil.

It depends on your database and SQL tools available on your systems. You will be required to create a trigger in databaser server. (Should look like CREATE TRIGGER ... FOR <table> AFTER INSERT EXECUTE ...
Contact your database administrator, that is not an Abap subject at first. (The DB administator may be able to call abap then)

  • How come Mac Mail doesn't ding when new mail arrives?

My sound is on.  Recently my Mac Mail doesn't notify me by sound when I have new mail.  I'm running on 10.7.5.

I checked email several minutes ago.  Activity Monitor now shows it as using 0% of CPU time.  When that's the case it's now using any power at all.  Every so often it will "wake up" to check for new mail.  When that happens it will briefly use some CPU power.  That interval can be controlled with the setting for "Check for new messages" in the General panel of Mail's preferences.
You didn't ask about RAM, but when Mail is idle I'd expect it put minimal demands on RAM.

  • IMac losing wireless connection when new wireless device is added.

I have a new 2.4 G iMac and have a 5.1 logitech surround set-up with wireless speakers. anytime i turn the speakers on and i'm using my wireless internet, the internet sits; when i turn the speakers off, the internet works as it should.sounds like there's problem with the wireless.

    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - In there, you should be able to navigate around to find a sleep timer.  Some printers have the setting available to the user, some do not.  I am not sure on your model.
While you are in there, you might as well set a static IP address:
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 254 (the last number in the address). If you do not know this, enter the current IP address.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Leave the gateway and DNS blank. Click 'Apply'
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Imac wont start up after new RAM, no chime, black screen

Hi, I've recently purchased a used 2010 iMac i3 that had faulty RAM.
This was confirmed as the issue when I tested a friend's original RAM from the same age iMac and the machine worked perfectly.
I then ordered 2x 4gb Crucial memory (upgrade from the 2x 2gb already installed) but kept getting kernal errors and RAM integrity check errors so the modules were returned and replaced by crucial.
Prior to returning, I attempted to reinstall a fresh copy of mavericks, but the hard drive failed to completely format, and then the OS install also failed so the machine currently now has no operating system. However before returning the ram the machine would boot up and connect to the internet to attempt to download the OS again.
The replacements have now arrived, but after installing the machine won't even boot. First attempt to start there is a drive noise, and the fans run, but no chime and a black screen. If I force shutdown and try again the drive noise happens twice and the fans run, but the same outcome.
If I remove the RAM I still get the single bleep, and once of all of the times I've removed and reseated the RAM I've had a triple beep integrity check fail.
Any help would be massively appreciated. Lost now as to whether the issue is with crucials RAM or the iMac itself.
    Thanks

Do you still have the old ram? Was orig sticks of ram bad? What happens if you put only one stick of the orig ram back in ?

  • IMac doesn't power on - new since 10.4.8

Since I have updated my system to 10.4.8 my system won't power up any more. It doesn't react to the power switch. That is not unless I disconnect the firewire devices (hub connected to two drives).
I don't want to disconnect the drives each time I start up my system. Anyone a clue?

You may have a power supply issue:

  • Metadata window doesn't change when new thumb is selected

Since recent update I have the following problem several times a day:
I add metadata (in split window) to a few pics. Click on another thumbnail to edit its metadata and the metadata window (left of screen) doesn't show info for the newly-clicked-on pic. It continues to show info from previous pic. Can't change that window regardless of the view or how many other pics I click on.
Only solution I've found is to close and reopen. This happened four times yesterday, and again, within 10 minutes of starting to edit today.
I looked into plists for Aperture (home>library>app support), but there are a lot of them and I'm not sure which might be causing the problem—or if any are.
    Thanks for the help.

  • When new CD are inserted, posible too automaticly copy files too folders??

    Hi.
I get a lot of cds from customers.. Is it possible too get all the files/folders on a cd too copy automaticly too my desktop and then eject it???? I am soooo tired of doing this manualy:-D If it are posible too also put the files inn a folder with the name of the CD + Date it woud be too GOOD:-)
    Best regards
    Einar

    einar,
Yes this is possible with an AppleScript or AppleScript/Automator combination.
The challenge will be determining whether this is a new cd or not. Without knowing everytime you insert a cd it will copy the files to the desktop/folder. There are at least two ways around this:
    1) Have a database that keeps track of the CDs that have been processed;
    2) Have a dialog that comes up once the CD is recognized and lets you decide whether you want to process the cd or just mount it.
I will see what I can come up with using the second method.

  • Hp deskjet f2180 won't print even when new cartridges are inserted

I require assistance urgently.  I have inserted new cartridges into my HP deskjet F2180, but the alert light for the ink keeps blinking, and it won't print at all.  Can't even do the maintenance checks such as CLEAN PRINTER HEADS.

Hi , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're experiencing cartridge issues.  I would like to help.
I would recommend removing the ink cartridges, and performing a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar. I would then recommend utilizing this document on Blinking Lights. Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • IMac doesn't recognize input devices after going to asleep, must reboot

Quite often, my iMac doesn't respond when I attempt to "wake" it using keyboard or mouse. The only way to wake the iMac is to tap the power button. However, when it wakes the mouse cursor is a spinning color wheel and the system does not recognize any input from the keyboard or mouse. I can leave it sitting for quite some time and it still will not recognize my input devices. When this happens I must hold the power button to reboot.
This has been happening for a quite a while now, and it is highly annoying. I can't remember if this was happening before my screen was replaced by Apple a few months ago. It definitely did not happen before upgrading to Lion.
I am hoping you guys can help, otherwise I suppose I will be calling Apple and see if they can figure it out. I am tired of this!
    Thanks,
    Robyn

I'm having a similar issue. I put my screen to sleep before I go to bed, next day, the computer is frozen, but still on since I can detect heat from the top vent.
I've checked memory for any errors (5 hours of testing) and removed any system extensions. Still gets frozen.
I did attach an old USB mouse just to wake it up when it loses connection to the wirless bluetooth devices. I've been able to wake it up from this condition a few times.
I will keep investigating. My iMac is 1 month old, 27" i5 quad core.

  • My new RAM doesn't work with my iMac.

    Hello,
I bought new RAM 4GB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM to installed in my iMac 3.4 GHz intel core i7, osx lion.
I try to installed it alone without original RAM (2GB * 2 pcs) installed to check how it works.
After press start button, there are 3 beep sounds and iMac won't start.
I try to reset PRAM follow the instruction, but it won't work.  Because there are 3 beep sounds alarm immediately after press start.
Does my RAM have a problem?

My iMac has 4 memory slots and I try to installed one by leave 3 slots empty.
By the way this is the 2nd ram I purchased from OWC with same spec as the last one (also same as link above) but different in purchase date (about 2 weeks different).
So now I have 2 GB *2 pcs (come with iMac) and 4GB * 2 pcs from OWC.
So I'm quit sure that this ram is compatible with my iMac because the first one is work.
    But I have some notice,
For the 1st RAM I bought from OWC (4GB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz SO-DIMM), when first installation it also didn't work. I can't start iMac. And after 2 weeks, I try to installed it to my iMac again, now it can operate as normal.  What do you think about it?

  • New Ram for my Imac doesn't seem to increase speed!

I just upgraded my Imac from 1 gig ram to 4 gig ram. I ordered the ram from Crucial. I took out the 1 gig of ram and installed the 4 gigs of new ram, and booted the computer back up. It now says that I have 4 gig of ram, however, I do not notice a noticeable improvement in speed. How can I make sure I don't have a defective module? Is there any thing else I need to do when installing new ram?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not sure I totally agree with these responses, but I am admittedly no expert. I too increase my RAM from 1 gig to 2.5. I did this because I noticed a general sluggishness after installing Leopard. I figured the latest OS was hogging up some RAM, so I increased the RAM. I see no appreciable difference fter installing the extra 1.5 gigs. In the past, I have upgraded RAM on my many Macs and have always noticed a difference in the response time in Safari and other apps. What am I missing this time? If RAM won't do it, then what will? It seems absurd to me that a two year old iMac with 2.5 gigs of RAM should be sluggish.

  • New RAM in iBook prevents startup

    Hey everyone,
My little 5+ year-old iBook G4 (933MHz) is so old, but still working fine, so I decided to buy 512MB of RAM from OWC. I'm trying to make it last until OSX 10.6, haha. I made sure the new RAM is EXACTLY the same as my old RAM (PC2100 DDR 266MHz 200 Pin), just bigger. I even compared the two when I installed it.
On startup, I get nothing but the chime. The screen stays black. I don't even hear the HD spin up. I have no idea if it's on or not, so I just pull the battery. When I put my old memory back in, it works fine, with or without the airport card.
I thought if memory was bad, it should still boot, since it has 128MB built in. So I can't tell if it's being recognized or not (well, obviously it's being recognized, it won't start up!)
Any clues as to what the problem might be? I guess I can exchange the RAM, but it would be for exactly the same type.
By the way, this iBook had its logic board replaced by Apple about 2 years ago, if that affects anything.

I agree with Duane. Since your computer runs fine with the original RAM but doesn't even boot with the new, there's not much else that would be the issue.
Also, I've noticed that if a computer doesn't like a RAM module, it won't boot--even if the second one is perfectly fine. Make sure you've got the RAM seated properly and if it still misbehaves, exchange it for another module.
You may also want to double-check that you've got the right RAM, just in case.
