IMac drive spits out Apple Install discs...

All of a sudden, out of the blue, my iMac won't accept my Apple install discs, or my iLife '06 discs. It will accept some other discs, like Office 2004, but won't touch the Apple install or ilife discs.
I tried the same discs on my mini, and they all work. I spoke with an apple tech, and have tried various things, like resetting nvram and pram, without any luck.
I'm now going to try to boot in safe mode, an startup manager and try. If that doesn't work, I'm just going to request a new drive.
Anyone else ever have this happen?
Bryan

Hi Bryan,
I'm afraid I don't know which brands of drive cleaning discs are available in your part of the world. I've used various 'dry" cleaning discs over the years though without any problems. Most have a little "brush" on one section of the disc.
I'd look for a good quality product that specifically says that it is Mac compatible , if possible, though as many can even be used in audio or "stand alone" DVD situations, this shouldn;t be all that critical.
Be wary of any "wet" cleaning systems , or ones which look as if they may have problems with a slot loading drive though.
Its not a bad idea to run one of these every now and then BEFORE problems arise. You can get to a situation where the drive becomes so dirty that it can't even read the necessary info on the cleaning disc itself. I run one every three months, just to be on the safe side.
Cheers
Rod

    I need some recomendations plz.

    Hello,
you don't need OS X install-disk, but I strongly recomend to burn a Win 7 disk. You may have some problems with installing it from a USB Flash :)

Yes, an external drive will be necessary.  You may purchase the Mac superdrive from the online store or one from another manufacturer.  All will work.

  • Out an install disc on the "crossgrade"/"upgrade"?

Maybe a silly question, but I'm wondering - if I send Apple my FCP4 install disc - and I decide to wipe the machine and re-install everything, will this "upgrade"/ "Crossgrade" work? Or is this strictly an upgrade to what is already on the machine? I don't want to be out an install disc....

I can't answer your question officially and I've yet to receive my upgrade discs but I'm pretty sure the upgrade disc is a full upgrade. If it was a partial upgrade, it would require your old discs and you have to send those in.
Upgrades are available even as far back as FCP 1, IIRC, so requiring that you have a working install prior to upgrading would be very difficult.

  • IBook G4 1GHz -- combo drive spitting out all CDs/DVDs since 10.4.5

My 12 inch iBook G4 1GHz has been spitting out any CD/DVD inserted (both blank as well as non-blank ones) for the last few hours.
Also, my system crashed at least 4 times today. And when I restart, it starts off with noisy fan sound and just stops without booting.
When I press the power button again, it makes the same sound that iBook makes when it is forcefully shutdown. Now, when I press the power button again, it boots normally.

    Hi Kranthi,
You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #88275 on Troubleshooting the slot load disc drive (Portables).

  • Drive spitting out CD's seconds after insertion

My drive will not accept any form of CD. I haven't spilled liquid on it or anything. What's wrong? How can I fix this?

Scott, I have learned repeatedly what you have explained here: That these optical Super Drives are not robust. I am on my THIRD Super Drive in the less than three years I've owned my MacBook. Thank goodness I bought the extended warranty and got the drive replaced twice without charge. I forgot the circumstances of the first failure in Spring 2009, but the second failure was only last week after I tried to use Disc Utility to erase a CD-RW. I choose the longer, more thorough erase process, but when it was taking more than two hours, I stopped the procedure before it completed itself. After that, the drive would work only intermittently, spitting out most CD-ROMS and burning CDs only occasionally. I finally just went to the Genius Bar for a new one. (These guys are so busy these days that it took 3 days to install one they had in stock!)

  • IMac won't boot from install disc

My iMac has been running a little slow the past two days and so I ran Disk Utility. DU reported that I had the incorrect number of thread records and an invalid volume count. It instructed me to repair the disk by booting from the install disc. The problem is that when I try to boot from the install disc (after I choose the disc from the options), I just get a gray screen with the apple logo on it. Nothing else happens, no disc activity, nothing.
Anyone have any ideas as to how to get my iMac to boot from the disc and, ultimately, to get Repair Disc running from DU?
    Thanks,
    Rich

It should only take a minute or so at most to boot from the DVD.
If your sure you have the correct Install Disk for that iMac, I'd start over. Then if it still doesn't work then perhaps a trip to your Local Apple Service Provider with the Disk or Disk and iMac is in order.

  • IMac won't start without install disc

Hi, I'm new to all of this. I tried resetting my admin password using install disc on my iMac as I'd forgotten it. Now iMac won't start without disc. If disc is ejected on restart apple logo flashes between no entry sign and folder with "?" on it. Will start up with install disc in, but then wants me to choose language and install OS. Tried repairing and verifying HD and all seems ok. Tried holding option key and selecting HD on startup, but same outcome - choose language and install OS. How do I get back to normal desk top? Do I have to install OS again? Will I lose data? Please, please help! Thanks.

  • Disk drive spits out all disks!

My drive won't accept any kind of disk anymore, it just spits them out after a few seconds. This happened over night. Maybe some dirt got in through the slot or something? Is there anything I can do besides getting an external drive of some sort?

Have you tried resetting the pmu? It is kind of a catch all, resets the powerbook and hardware to default settings? Check out apple's support page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

  • New Hard Drive - Cannot Boot From Install Disc

    Hi guys,
I just replaced the hard drive in my macbook and I want to re-install Tiger on the new drive. When i insert the install disc and hold option on startup, the cursor appears but no boot options. When i hold c, nothing happens at all.
When i put the old hdd back in, both the hdd and the install disc appear as boot options, but nothing with the new drive.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks

Use the original OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. Insert it into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key until the spinning gear appears below the dark gray Apple logo. The first thing you must do before installing OS X is to prep the new drive:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Once formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

  • In wiping my iMac's HD from the install disc - it made slow progress for 2 days but has stalled at about 80% complete.  Why won't it finish and, has it wiped enough if I abort it now?

I am wiping my iMac's HD from the disc utility on the Install disc.  I selected the 5-pass erase.  The progress bar moved steadily for the first two days but has now stalled at about 80% + complete.  Why has it stalled and will it have wiped enough if I abort the process now?  (I separately verified the HD.)

I'd abort & do a Zero One Pass, that is plenty secure for 99.9999999% of people.

  • My imac just spits out cds/dvds

I put in a dvd or cd. It makes a wierd noise like the laser is moving back and forth then just spits out the cd/dvd

Before getting the lens cleaner, Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Why is my drive spitting out discs

I have a macbook Pro late 2011, when i insert a disc it will accept it, make a bit of a noise, and spit it out about 20 seconds later. Im 100% sure there is no disc still in there, is my drive dead? or can the issue be resolved?
    Thankyou

The drive may dead, but it may just have a dirty reader lense. Does it do it with all discs or just this one?
You can get a CD/DVD cleaning disc almost anywhere that sells electronics, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, online, etc... They are cheap and if it all discs try this.
If it still persists, being to a Apple store Genius (make an appointment first) and they will diagnose it for free.
The bright side is if it is dead, it not an expensive fix.
