IMac Dual 20" Received today

Received iMac today. Transfered files from Mac mini via firewire in about one hour. 2 Gigs ram, high end video card.
Machine is very fast. Doom and Halo run great. Microsoft Office runs without a problem. Just as fast or fast than he Mac mini. No problems to report. Very nice!

Glor,
How is the 500GB drive? Is it noisier or hotter than the 250? (Or than you'd like, if that makes more sense than a direct comparison?)
I am looking to get a new iMac CD configured like yours, but don't want to lose the quietness of the Mac mini I have been using. Quiet operation in a quiet room is a priority for me.
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

  • Connecting iMac to stereo receiver

I am trying to figure out the best way to connect my iMac to a stereo receiver. Which option will result in superior sound on my home stereo: (1) running a TOSLINK cable from the iMac's optical digital audio out port to the receiver's optical input or (2) connecting the iMac to the receiver using a USB DAC?
    Thanks for your help.

I do not agree. The headphone amp outputs a conventional two channel analog signal on the multi-purpose 3.5 mm audio output jack on all Intel iMacs. But that same jack outputs a digital optical signal if the iMac senses a mini-Toslink adaptor plug has been inserted instead of an analog stereo TRS (tip ring sleeve) plug.
IOW, the same jack furnishes two entirely different kinds of output (analog or digital) depending on what is plugged into it. The digital output encodes the audio (which could consist of multiple channels of audio) on a single beam of digitally modulated light. The analog output is two separate signals, each on its own electrical conductor, derived from the internal DAC in the iMac & amplified by the amp to provide enough power to drive headphones.
It is possible that the amp does double duty to also drive the light source for the digital output, but that is in no way is comparable to using it to drive headphones -- for the digital output all it would have to do is switch the light level between the digital high & low states.
My guess is that whoever told you about the headphone amp either did not know about the dual function of the jack or thought you were talking about an analog connection to your stereo.

  • IMessage on iMac not reliably receiving photos

iMessage on iMac not reliably receiving photos but my iPhone and iPad are-what's the fix for this?

    Hi,
I've been with the same problem for a couple of days, until finally today Messages simply stopped showing even a the window, so absolute inability to use it.
Considering that reinstalling the operating system is NOT a solution, I searched for something myself.
Pictures are controlled by xpcd, imagent and Messages, and it seems that when the problem arises is because they're using the wrong Apple server.
While this may be solved by Apple in a update (I hope so), in the meantime you can do a workaround (it worked for me on two different machines, and even days old images appeared).
In your Library, there is a folder called Preferences (that is /Users/<your_username>/Library/Preferences). There you should delete com.apple.imagent.plist com.apple.imservice.iMessage.plist and com.apple.imessage.bag.plist, with Messages CLOSED. Then reboot so Messages creates new ones. Also delete all file starting with com.apple.imagent, com.apple.imservice, com.apple.imessage and com.apple.iChat that end in .lock.
If even then it still is not working, deleting all files starting with com.apple.imagent, com.apple.imservice, com.apple.imessage and com.apple.iChat 100% for sure. But when you reboot you'll find you need to input again your login data for iMessage, FaceTime, Yahoo chat, AIM chat, Google Talk and Jabber (if you used them on Messages/iChat).
This is an annoyance, but less than a whole operating system reinstall or losing the functionality.
After all of this is done you should regain the ability to receive photos, send photos and drag&drop photos. Also if your Messages app only shows the menubar and no window at all, the same procedure solves it.

  • IMac dual for graphic design?????

Considering getting and iMac dual intel based computer with 1gig Ram running OS10.4.
Currenly running PowerMac - System 10.3.9 - 450 MHz with 768 Ram Bus Speed 100 MHz.
Software: QE 6.5, Illustrator and Photoshop CS as well as MS Office X
Use PS moderately, mostly to adjust photos.
I understand these programs will be running using Rosetta and therefor slower. BUT, will they run at about the same speed or maybe even faster than they now run on my older PowerMac G4 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm about to seriously upgrade from a G3 imac and OS
9.2.2----(yeah, I've been slow about these things).
I'm starting to create more large and layered
graphics/illlustration files and have read that one
needs a dual core processor, extra hard drive, and
plenty of RAM to get enough power and speed, and that
means a PowerMac tower. However, I love the new Imac.
My question is, is it possible to get enough if I get
an Imac intel with it's duo core processors, put in
two GB RAM, and add a couple of external hard drives
for storage and scratch disk? Or am I putting off the
inevitable, and should just bite the bullet and go
    for the bigger gun?
    G3
    imac   Mac OS 9.2.x
    G3 imac   Mac OS 9.2.x
Go with the PowerMac G5 because it will be more upgradable in the future. If you look now, there are companies that make processors for the PowerMac G4. The last and fastest G4 was a dual 1.42 Ghz G4 and now third party companies offer up to dual 1.8 GHz G4 processors. If you plan on keeping your computer for a long time, get a tower-based computer because those are easily upgradable and judging from the age of your G3 iMac, you like to keep your stuff for a long time :-D

  • Hi, I have a brand new imac which i got today and when I open Iphoto all i get is the error message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" any ideas? thanks

Hi, I have a brand new imac which i got today and when I open Iphoto all i get is the error message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" any ideas? thanks

Are there photos in the Library? If not then just trash it and launch iphoto. It will make a new one.
If there are pics in it then Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Loading Leopard onto iMac dual intel from iBook softwareG5 computers

I have iMac G4 and iMac dual intel (G5?) computers and just bought iBook with OS 10.5 software on CD. Desire to have at least the iMac dual intel using the same OS, but the software will not load on the iMac intel G5. Both computers have essentially the same memory, etc. Do I have to spend another $129 do get both OS the same?

What makes the software (Leopard OS) so specific to a machine?
The disks that ship with a computer have only been tested on a specific machine, may only contain Mac OS X components designed for that machine, and include additional software, such as iLife, which isn't in the retail package.
Isn't OS 10.5 the same, perform the same, written the same for an iBook, iMac G4, or iMac dual intel computer?
No. All Mac OS X 10.5 retail disks are the same, but OEM disks are usually different builds with different configurations, besides the fact that OEM disks have additional software.

Airport Express (the small Airport device, which is the only one with an audio connection) works through Airtunes, which only works with iTunes. The computer won't send ALL system sound to the Airport. If you actually want to send sound outside of iTunes, use Airfoil.

  • How to connect my iMac to AV receiver?

I want to watch movies on my iMac but use Cambridge audio Aero 5.1 speakers through AV receiver Cambridge Audio Azur 751R. How do I connect my Mac to the av receiver? What cables/connectors do I need?
    thank you for your help!

To do this the right way, get an AppleTV ($59 refurbished from Apple's online store), set up the AppleTV and  connect it to the AppleTV's Optical out to the Receiver & HDMI out to your TV. Then set up Home Sharing in iTunes on your iMac and finally wireless stream movies to the big screen TV from the AppleTV. Anything else is a kluge and won't work as well as  you would like. If you have a 2011 or later iMac  you can also use the AppleTV to mirror the iMac's content to the BigScreen TV.

  • IMac Dual Monitor, Mini-DP to DVI, Screen Blinking

2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Ram. ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics.
Been using Snow Leopard here at work, running dual monitors via Mini-DP to DVI cable. Never a problem previously.
Upgraded to Mavericks. Enjoying it. Until the 2nd monitor (Acer v223w) started intermittently blinking. Discovered I can trigger the blinking via the mail program on the second window - hiding and/or showing the info/mail activity left-side panel will cause the screen to blink.
    Kinda befuddled. Any help?

I am having the excact same problem. With nearly if not an identicle system.
    24" Mid 2007 iMac
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
    Serial Number  W87***B2ZCT
    Display 1: Built-in iMac Display (1920 x 1200)
    Display 2: ACER 23" Wide Screen AL2223W Display (1680 x 1050)
Since I updated to the latest version of mavericks the other night I have had frequent flickering and blacking out of my screen. It happens mostly when I mouse on or mouse off my dock menu, and open programs on the second monitor. There is also little yellow and organge flickers throughout the screen from time to time almost like an interference patter, generally 1px high and 20px wide with varying degress of static.
I have tried the following with no success:
    - Reset my PRAM / NVRAM
    - Reset my SMC
    - Deleted com.apple display related files
    - Used screenResX to try and find a different Display 2 options
    - Lowered resolution of Display 2
This is extremely frustrating because I am a web designer and programmer, and having my 2nd monitor not functioning basically renders my work station useless for me.

  • Need help connecting my iMac to my receiver

I recently bought this product http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/RCA-mini-spdif.html
the 3.5mm mini to digital coax. I bought it so I could hook up my iMac (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86810) to my receiver. However, I connected it, and no sound came out. On my receiver I kept switching the signal from analog to digital, to see if that would do the trick, but no luck. So then I tried connecting the 3.5mm to my iPod to see if it was just my computer that wasn't compatible, but that didn't work either. Did I pick the wrong cable? Or could it be defective? My coaxial cable for my DVD player works fine by the way

Which iMac do you have? I have the iShight iMac whaich does have a digital out in the form of a mini optical out (through the output jack), you need to get an optical cable with a mini adaper at one end and make sure you select optical rather than coaxical on your reciver if you can...

Apple has a good cable in the store, its the one I use. If its surround sound you will need to changed a pref in DVD player to let the sound pass through to the reciver to be decoded in DTS or Dolby Digital
All that is assuming you want a digital connection and have an optical in on your amp, otherwise I look silly but you did say you bought a digital cable.
