IMac Duo-CORE and virus'?

I just picked up a new iMac the other day and as much as I would love to stick with just Apple software, classes will have me needing to use Window's also.
Does simply owning this machine make me more prone to virus' because it is Window's compatible?
Does using Window's open me up to a host of virus' found in everyday life for PC's?
More than likely, my PC partition will be kept from internet use and use more for using products needed for class like: JCreator, Photoshop, SolidWorks, etc.
Thanks ahead of time.
~Jay

Hello,
Just being compatible with Windows doesn't mean that you'll automatically get a virus.
But, you do need to understand that when you are running Windows that there is absolutely no difference between your computer and any other PC running Windows.
So, your machine is just as likely to get a Windows virus as it would be if you were running Windows on any other computer.
Just keeping your machine off the network does not mean that it cannot get a virus. When my wife was in college the first time, she brought home viruses a couple of times just from using her disks on the college computers.
So, if you do your homework on your machine, then take that work to a PC for work or to turn it in, and then you bring it back to your computer, you very well could get a virus if the other computer had a virus on it.
Basically, any time you share files with another computer, you risk getting viruses from that computer (if it has one).
So, you should still observe all the same precautions you would if you were using any other PC. That means an anti-virus program, a good firewall if it will be on the network, and any other precautions that would apply to any other PC running Windows.
When you use Windows on your Mac, there is absolutely nothing different about the Mac. For all intents and purposes, it is a PC.
With Mac's running on Intel processors now, the only thing that really distinguishes them now is their appearance and the fact that they will also run Mac OS X.
But, other than that, you will find that they are just as much a PC as any other PC. They just look different and will also run Mac OS X.
Now, Windows cannot read a Mac OS volume without special software. So, unless you have a program installed that enables Windows to read your OS X partition, then Mac OS X will remain unaffected by any Windows virus you get.
I hope this helps.

  • Intel duo Core and CS2 - does it work?

    Hi guys,
I'm doing really well. I ordered a 17" imac 1.82Ghz Intel Duo Core and I have not as yet received it.
I have alos ordered Aperture (which will work but possibly quite slow) although I have upgraded to 2Gb Ram.
I have also ordered Photoshop CS2 (full version) and I'm confused. Can I install it? Will it work?
If Aperture is slow and Photoshop CS2 doesn't work what can a amateur photographer use. I'm cheesed off because I ordered an expensive machine and software and before I have even received it I'm seeing that it might not be suitable at all.
Can someone give me some "peace of mind" please.
    17" IMAC (1.83Ghz) Intel duo Core / 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although you can use CS2 with an Intel Mac you should be aware of a significant problem which relates to its installation on them since the last Security update. According to Frank, one of the more senior members of the boards , with a good knowledge of this area:
The CS2 installer will fail if you have applied SU 2006-003 prior to the installation of CS2 on an Intel-based Mac. You will be required to reinstall Tiger, otherwise you will be only able to reboot the machine via a Netboot, CD boot or Safeboot. The Finder is completely locked. It is unknown at this time which extension is causing the issue. Adobe has acknowledged the problem.
One workaround that I am aware of has been suggested on MacFixit:
    MacFixIt reader David Warren writes:
"I had the startup freeze like others. For my MacBook Pro the answer was removing the Adobe VersionCueCS2 from /Library/StartupItems.""(from MacFixit - http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2006051507495116 )
To do this, though, you would need to be happy starting up in the non-standard ways suggested by Frank. I wouldn't normally suggest this for a new Mac user. If you plan on going down this path post back and we can tell you how to.
I guess the real answer is that you will need to know whether the security update has already been installed on your new computer. If it has, then you should wait until Adobe have a fix for the problem before you install Photoshop.
If it hasn't, install Photoshop BEFORE you upgrade with the Security Update, and don't re-install it thereafter until the Adobe fix arrives. You should also remove the relevant startup file, just to be on the safe side.
So whoever warned you about installing it was doing you a favour, and a "simple google search", might have got you into quite a lot of strife!
    Cheers
    Rod

You need a "Core 2 Duo" for lion, and I'm guessing you only have a "Core Duo"  My wife's macbook is also a "Core Duo" and has Snow Leapord, but cannot install Lion.....

  • Sleep problem with iMac Duo Core

I purchased this 20" iMac Duo Core five days ago. Whenever the iMac enter sleep mode with pulsating indicator light below the screen, waking up the iMac always cause complete reboot of iMac. Is this a known issue with 20" iMac Core Duo or there is some problems in configuration under System Preferences ? The SMC firmware was updated from version 1.1f2 to 1.1f5 for installing Windows XP through Boot Camp Assistant in a NTFS disk partition.

Thank you for the useful lead. The problem has been resolved by executing System Management Controller (SMC) reset procedure outlined in support site. Further monitoring on behaviour of the SMC is required. Hopefully this power management problem is not as big as with first generation iMac G5 I used to own. No idea whether latest SMC firmware update released by Apple resolve this problem though I have applied the update for Windows installation through Boot Camp.

  • New iMac Duo Core or Newest G5 any better on Video?

Think about buying the new G5 Duo Core processor over the current G5, I have a older G5 17" and want a new 20" to use as a music movie server in a Home Theater. I didn't see any screen issues with my model G5 that I just sold to my sister and I was in a local Apple Store and the G5 I saw, screen looked pretty **** good, no flicker or grain to the picture. In no hurry right now and I can wait awhile considering I just purchased there new MacPro Powerbook. Burning my CD using Apple Lossless, but that is for another discussion. Thanks...

Doctor: Thanks for the input, much appreciated! Going to wait a little while till they take care of a couple of bugs that I don't want to deal with. Front Row glitch in Front Row and a few other Apps. I will wait a few months and then buy one. Besides I just bought a new Macbook Pro.
    Thanks again.

  • Synchronizing Iphoto Libraries between Powerbook and Imac Duo Core....

I'm sure there must be a simple answer to this, but I have a Powerbook Laptop I've used for the past year as a primary computer, but recently added a Imac as my main computer at home and using my laptop more for travel / work. I'm trying to figure out how to "synchronize" all my Iphoto files (images) and also Itunes libraries. Not trying to do anything illegal (photo/music) wise....just not have to have two different photo/music groups on each computer. I was able to load the library from the laptop when I first got the IMAC....but if I add any photos on my laptop or purchase any music..... just haven't figured out how to easily sync them between the two computers. I'm sure there are others much wiser than myself who have figured this out and I ask for your words of wisdom to help an "apple newbie" overcome this minor hurdle. Thanks in advance!!

    Bill:
You can't "synchronize" libraries because that only syncs files, not the contents of files. Doing so will corrupt both libraries.
The only way at present to make two libraries the same is to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will let you merge libraries while preserving keywords, comments, albums, rolls, etc. The developer's site explains it.

  • 24" imac dual core and uk broadband providers

I currently have a 17" flat screen imac connected to the internet via the internal modem. I use AOL's dial-up service. I'm intending to purchase a new 24" dual core imac and want to connect to the internet via broadband. As AOL's current broadband sevice doesn't support Macs, can anyone recommend a Mac friendly ISP? I'm a broadband novice, so any other connection advice would be appreciated.

    Hi Keithsahammer
All broadband service's are Mac friendly it's most service provider's dont support Mac's.
Have a look at ADSLguide http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/threads.php?Cat= scroll down for all provider's
    Mac forum http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=mac ask away.
When you get Broadband make sure you dont get a USB modem as they dont work to well with Mac's as they need driver's.
Get yourself a ethernet router/modem like http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=DG834 or if you need wireless http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=DG834G

You might be able to get some advice from a nearby Apple Macintosh User Group. Here's a link to the locations:http://www.apple.com/usergroups/find/
Are you near any of these locations? http://appleusergroups.com/locator/find/locate.cgi?zipcode=93230&Submit=Search zip code 93230 ??
Mac User Groups are awesome for getting help. If I can think of any other sources I'll post back.

  • Starp up problems -Imac Duo Core

    Imac DuoCore 1.83
Upgraded to Leopard several months ago without problems.
Two days ago the following started:
    1. Starts up-no chime
    2. Apple logo is seen (grey)
    3. light blue screen with progress wheel-not the pinwheel)
    4. screen dims a bit, progress wheel dissappears then comes back and it does
    the same thing.
I ran the Disk First Aide frim the CD, performed verify and repair disc.
    Came back with repaired completed.
    Restarted...but the problem persists.
Ran the CD a few times with the same result.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks in Advance
    RL Mora
    PS
There is nothing else attached and or installed hardware wise

    Try running the hardware diagnostics:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error

  • Nikon 8000 compatability with latest imac (i7 core) and Snow leopard

I am about to update my ancient Mac and have noticed on many photo forums that the above combination may not work and is prone to glitches at best. Does anyone here have actual experience running this combo? I understand that Silverfast Ai should run well with Snow Leopard but the software is a bit clunky and I'd much prefer to use the Nikon scan software and not have to go thru another learning curve. Any info would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

Dell never includes decent PSU. Too bad you aren't a system builder!
Yes you can buy OEM System Builder but then that can't be installed on another motherboard if needed later.
Macs generally aren't easy and not supported to do processor upgrades. Pick up a P55 or X58 motherboard and you can and then have a tricked out gaming PC.

  • Loss of internet connection from windows side of imac duo core

I have cable modem as internet hookup. When I am in Mac I have no problems, but every time I either change to the Windows side, or the computer is turned off or goes off, when Windows comes up, I can't access the internet.
I have gone into control panel and it states that the cable modem is unplugged or not connected. I then have to literally unplug the cable from the computer, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in.
This has been going on several months and started after I had a cable issue at the house and the cable guys came out and fixed it. they changed some things on my computer.
I think something on the MAC side was actually changed and that is impacting the windows side.
Prior to that I could access the internet from either side w/no problem.
Now, even if I unplug the cable and then plug it in, the computer is not recognizing that the cable is plugged in. As you can see, I am still having NO problem w/the MAC side.
Any ideas what command or default setting might have been changed to impact the Windows side in this fashion. thanks

what is the firmware version on the router?? try reducing MTU to 1452...let me know if you have any issues will get back to you.
    thanks

  • Hotmail/intel duo core

Has anyone successfully downloaded the plugin for hotmail in mail on the new intel duo core and managed to get it to work?
v grateful for any advice on how to do this. i have installed the plugin but it doesn't seem to be recognised in the options for account set up.
    thanks
iMAC intel duo core 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I don't believe the httpmail plugin is Universal yet which means it runs/works for the Mail.app on a PowerPC Mac at the present time only.
An Intel Mac includes Rosetta which is a translation process that runs a PowerPC binary on an Intel-based Macintosh computer—it allows applications to run as nonnative binaries.
For the Intel based Mail.app (which should be Universal), try selecting run as a PowerPC binary (which requires Rosetta) using Get Info for the Mail.app application via the Finder.
This should allow the httpmail plugin to work.
