IMac Duo friezes during dialup

Got a intel duo imac, and when we hit "connect" the system locks up within 3 to 5 seconds. no mouse or keyboard activity. We have to ouse power button to shut off. the 9th time it will dialup and work fine. What is up? any clues?
Thanks

Have you tried just sleeping it at night?
It appears to be graphic card related.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Thanks very much for answering.
Sleeping the iMac at night would work, I'm sure, since it's only on a cold restart that the unplanned restart occurs. Not as satisfying as curing the issue, though.
Apple Hardware Test reported nothing wrong with the graphic card, but the computer is not cold by the time the test is run, so I guess that could still be it.
I'm sure there is dust inside after three + years. Apple didn't really want me to open up my iMac, but this Core 2 Duo model can be opened by lifting off the glass with suction cups, I believe. Maybe I will do that and dust, and see if that helps. There might even be something I can reseat.
Also, I believe that on my next cold startup I will try single user mode and see if that prevents the restart.
Thanks for your suggestions.

  • Using imac duo as display

    Hi,
i have a PS2 video game console. I was wondering what was needed (if possible) to use the iMac duo as a display for my PS2. Basically, becomes a t.v.???

Try using the Elgato DTT Hybrid USB you can plug in PS2, sky box etc plus it has freeview built in

  • How can I get my Appleworks/Clarisworks Docs into my iMac Duo

I just came home from the Apple store with a brand new iMac Duo 2 Core machine. I was told at the store that any of my stuff in Classic mode is history and can't be used on the new iMac but I know that someone out there has figured a way to get Clarisworks/Apleworks documents in a new Intel Mac and are at this moment working with their docs. Please let me know how you did it.
    Thanks Chris.

Welcome to the iMac Intel forum.
I would ask the question in the Appleworks forum.
However, if your old Mac runs OS X, get Appleworks 6.2.9 and save all your files in the OS X version. Then install 6.2.9 on the Intel and transfer the files.

  • IMac Duo shuts down when trying to encode a DVD for burning.

Last night my Imac Duo 17" with one GB of memory shut down and wouldn't eject a DVD after encoding and burning a DVD with iDVD. The upper LEFT hand corner of the iMac was very hot to the touch. I checked the temperature with CoreDuoTemp before it shut down and it read 170 degrees F.
On restart...all I got was a white screen...without the ability to get a startup screen or eject the DVD.
This morning...after leaving the machine on for about five minutes...the DVD ejected itself and I got a startup screen. Now everything seems to be working fine. It seems to me that the machine shut down because of the heat.
I reported this to Apple and they said that even if I had applecare they couldn't do anything without a specific hardware issue to report and probably wouldn't repair it. They said that overheating and shutting down wasn't enough to request a repair. That the machine was too hot to touch in the upper left hand corner didn't seem to concern them.
This makes me wonder if it's worth getting Applecare? What has happened to Apple that an overheating problem doesn't merit a repair or replacement of a two month old iMac?
Does the machine have to actually start on fire before they will do anything about it?

  • Connecting a new iMac duo and iMac DVD SE

I've just bought a new iMac duo and would like to find out how to connect my old iMac DVD SE wirelessly. I phoned the local apple store and they were totally unhelpful and told me I can no longer buy an airport card for my old imac and could provide me with no alternative solution.
I have upgraded my broadband to the BT Home Hub and would like to connect the 2 macs to the internet and possibly share a printer.
I'd appreciate any advice on where to start with this.

iMac DVD SE   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
Option 1. According to BT's site the Home Hub has two Ethernet ports. If you have the luxury you could move teh hub next to the iMac DV and connect it with the supplied Ethernet Cable.
Option 2. Ethernet over mains. Not wireless, but uses your home mains wiring to transfer data (at 85Mbps it's much faster than Airport) so you won't have wires trailing around the home.
Option 3. Wireless Ethernet Bridge these are widely available and convert and Ethernet connection to a WiFi/Airport one.
Option 4. USB based adaptors are limited to 12Mbps (USB1.1 speed) and have generally poor support on the Mac.
Option 5. Airport cards are regularly available (with the required iMac DV adaptors) on eBay.co.uk but they demand a high price.
    Hope that helps.

  • Sleep problem with iMac Duo Core

I purchased this 20" iMac Duo Core five days ago. Whenever the iMac enter sleep mode with pulsating indicator light below the screen, waking up the iMac always cause complete reboot of iMac. Is this a known issue with 20" iMac Core Duo or there is some problems in configuration under System Preferences ? The SMC firmware was updated from version 1.1f2 to 1.1f5 for installing Windows XP through Boot Camp Assistant in a NTFS disk partition.

Thank you for the useful lead. The problem has been resolved by executing System Management Controller (SMC) reset procedure outlined in support site. Further monitoring on behaviour of the SMC is required. Hopefully this power management problem is not as big as with first generation iMac G5 I used to own. No idea whether latest SMC firmware update released by Apple resolve this problem though I have applied the update for Windows installation through Boot Camp.

  • IMac Duo will not stream Quicktime behind my router.

Just bought a new iMac Duo it will not stream QT behind my Linksys router. Now I know this is a bug in QT and a port not being open for this new version of QT on the Duo because all other Macs I have work fine.
If I move the iMac Duo to a DMZ zone it will stream just fine.
Now what UDP or TCP port range do I need to open for this iMac Duo version of QT 7.0.4 to stream properly ?????
    Thank you for your help.

Does this affect the system even without the firewall turned on? I don't have the firewall enabled (at least I think it is off - bear with me as this is my first Mac I noticed that neither the HTTP (port 80) nor UDP (port 554) work for my iMac, although my wife's iBook G4 and my other PC, an Athlon64 Windows XP box, play streaming Quicktime flawlessly over HTTP behind my NetGear DSL router. My iMac fails with connection error -5420.
All things considered, since I am a recent Mac owner (only had the thing for a about a week) and it is my first, I am very happy. I am just a bit disappointed in Apple for a problem like this since media technologies are their bread and butter.
Any more thoughts are certainly welcome.
    Thanks,

  • Imac Duo Slow

I have a Imac Duo 17" 2GB ram. I run photoshop, dreamweaver, parallels, safari, entourage, and sometimes excel at the same time. When switching between programs, my computer is so slow and sluggish. Yes, this is my first mac. I checked my activity monitor and there isnt anything eating the CPU, i also repaired disk permissions, its still so slow. Ran a bencmark score was 104.17. What also concerns me is i have another imac duo with 1gb and it scored 113.12 (how is that possible) the benchmark was ran on both machines with no other programs running. The mac with 1gb seems twice as fast, but i dont have any other programs installed on the 1gb. What do i have to do to speed up the 2gb machine (its only 1 month old)
Imac Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Welcome to the discussions!
There is no way that there should be that much of a difference in the machines, but for some reason there is.
I assume that the 2GB of RAM show in the system profileer. If not, well...
Have you tried running Memtest on both of them? Sometimes bad RAM may not show itself through crashes and such, and manifest itself in poor performance.
When you updated your OS to 10.4.7, do you use the combo updater or the delta update offered through software update? Is all your firmware and software up to date?
If not, make sure they are and then try running the combo updater. Backup your data, download the update and then unplug all USB and FireWire devices besides the keyboard and mouse, then repair permissions before and after applying the update.
Give it a try and see what happens.

  • IMac stuck "restarting" during 10.9.2 update

During my 10.9.2 update, my imac is stuck "Restarting" for one hour.  I'm going to let it sit a bit longer, anyone else come across this?
I just came across this thread, two similar experiences.

    @Erik
    I wonder 'try'?
Why do you say 'try', whats this.
In my opinion trying is not something you do every day with apple updates, right.
I mean, apple update is not something to doubt about, 'apple' hello!
Is there a difference in the regular App store OTA update and this combo update?
I had about the same issues here, that LS mentioned these connection attempts.
I had weird internet failing issues in my LAN at home, even other devices where blocked from internet, really weird. Pulled modem power several times, internet was back for a while, but after few minutes of slow browsing internet was down again. LAN itself seem to be in order, could still connect to other media on LAN, but not to WAN. Did disconnect power of modem routine again, internet up...
Even when connection to outside was down (several devices) I was able to get from WAN to LAN by means of my cell phone, data connection, port forwarding at home... So it seemed all outgoing traffic was broken somehow..
Why would an official update connect with facebook twitter etc, this is the main question here I think.
So I was a bit desperate and couldn't pinpoint the internet outages.
This all was just after the 10.9.2 ota update.
I followed your 'try' advice, now it seems my MBA doesn't break my internet connection anymore.
Thanks, it 'behaves' correctly I think, it needs some time still, just did the update.
Power comes with knowledge, so why the trying, is this experience, your gut, or something in higher places, what?
    Cheers I.

  • IMac hangs up during shutdown

My iMacs (2006 + late 2007) occasionally lockup during shutdown. After the desktop icons are gone but the desktop photo remains with the spinning pinwheel. Eventually I force a shutdown by holding down the power button. On restart, everything is back to normal. Sometimes I have waited for 2 hours and the machine has not shut down - only gone to sleep.

Same problem here, but it hangs all the time, not only 10-20% of the shutdown. I let it there for about 2 hours, nothing changed.
I have no idea if this is time machine related, but if it is, it's a bug. Apple can't wan't me to check the sys prefs every time i shut down my iMac...
By the way it's a two week old iMac which replaced my older one. I moved all the data by reinstalling leopard on the new iMac and telling the installer to rebuilt the system from the time machine data of my old iMac... Maybe something went wrong there.

  • IMAC freezing, hang during startup, loud noise coming out from the speaker

I am using the iMAC i3 Intel based which i bought it just a month ago
Last week it hang, freeze just like that without me launch any application just yet
I hold the ON button for a restart, and it freeze during the startup
One more thing, sometimes when it freeze, there's a noise coming out from the speaker ( just like there is no signal from the TV )
Already sent it to the Apple Service Center but they tell me it is free from any error, but by the time i bring it back home, not even 12 hours, it freeze again just like that with loud noises coming out from the speaker.
Btw did i mention, sometimes there's also a screen distortion
    Please somebody help me

I've experienced similar symptoms to the original poster's description. I have an iMac 27" 2010 model. This may be related to the following:
I've looked on numerous forums regarding the freezing problem I was having. This problem would arise on a wide range of systems.
Symptoms included but were not all always present - usually when I am loading the system with games/heavy load processes:
    - Full system freeze, screen still on.
    - Loud cracking noise coming from speakers (relative to what volume was at when the freeze happened).
    - Computer asleep but I cannot wake up unless hard reset with power button.
    - My screen backlight was also damaged (permanently dimmed) near the left side, and progressively got worse over time. This was fixed (replaced LCD 27" display $600+ and covered by my creditcard extended warranty)
Basically, what I've come to realize which has not been well documented as far as I could find relating to this problem - is that the system is overheating and causing these freezing errors (and LCD damage in my case). Prologned occurances could result in different system part failures.
How do you fix the overheating problem? Give this a try, it's worked so far for me and I've actually been able to continue video/photo editing without having this annoying freeze.
Search for and download 'iStat Pro' (widget addon that lets you monitor your system temperatures... compare it before and after the fix)
Search for and download 'SMCFanControl (a great little app that allows you to change your system fan speeds) - I did not know this was possible, and have never heard the fans go this high when it was being run automatically by the system. The fan's are obviously louder when set to max, but is well worth the system cooling results.

Subsequent startups on the same day proceed without interruption and without a problem report, until the first startup of the next day. I normally shut down the computer over night. The iMac operates normally after any of these startups, interrupted or not. Apple Hardware Test reports no problems.
This behavior is annoying, but not very problematic so far. Does anyone have a likely explanation or suggested cure?

  • The screen of my iMac flashes green during boot-sequence, then returns to normal.

During the boot-sequence the screen of my Imac 27" flashes green (once), then returns to normal. This does not happen when I boot my Windows (Bootcamp) partition, so I assume this is some kind of OSX driver error. This started to happen only after I installed the latest patch (10.9.3). Did anybody else encounter this and/or knows how to get rid of it ?

    Hey fumanchu,
Did a small google search and found the following:
    http://www.likelyanswer.com/28020629/My-Macbook-Pro-Had-A-Flashing-Red,-Blue,-Gr een-Screen-At-Startup
    which lead me to:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21535976#24471966
    which lead me to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    Basically reset the PRAM.
Worked for me hope it works for you buddy. I did it due what the first link said "might be user abuse to the display". doesn't sound good.
    Cheers

  • IMac is freezing during start-up from OS X installation disk

My iMac 27" is freezing during re-installation of the complete machine from Leopard OS X installation disk. The machine ends up (also in safe mode) with a screen showing something like "horse steps in the snow" as shown in both pictures, which can be seen on:
    http://whbakker.demon.nl/screen and http://whbakker.demon.nl/detail
I cannot find a thread or a good suggestion, what to do to re-initialize the complete machine.
Thank you in advance for your answers!
    Willem.

Can we assume you mean your Snow Leopard installation disc & that it is a grey one that came with this iMac?
27" iMacs are new enough that they can't run Leopard (OS 10.5), nor can they run some of the earlier versions of Snow Leopard. The installer on the disc should check for this & refuse to attempt an install if it is the wrong one, but if you are trying to boot from the disc to start the install it will never get that far. This is because the earlier OS versions lack the necessary extensions to support the latest hardware in the iMac. Thus, a safe boot won't help since there is still no source for them.
Also, if you have installed any aftermarket memory modules, it is possible they are not fully up to spec & incapable of running Snow Leopard. You may be able to verify this by starting up from the Apple Hardware Test, which you run from the original grey system disc by following the instructions printed on it. If you get an error with "MEM" in it, it means one or more memory modules is defective. If they are aftermarket ones, contact the supplier for replacements. If they are Apple-supplied modules they are covered by a one year Apple warranty (or 3 year one if you bought the Applecare protection plan).
